REPORTS FROM THE PASTABC'S OF KARAOKE: LET IT B
a-ha, B-52's, Clash, Dramarama, Electric 6, Fleetwood Mac (as sung by Billy Corgan), Green Day, House of Pain, Information Society, Joy Division, Kingsmen, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Nena, Roy Orbison, the Pogues, Queen, Ramones, Smiths, Justin Timberlake, U2, Vapors, White Stripes, XTC, Young MC, Zager & Evans. Erica & Matt from U31 sang "Let It Be". Adam sang "Letter B" by the Sesame Street Beetles. Contestants sang Beatles, Bowie, Berry, Bon Jovi, Blondie, Bowie, Buggles & the Band. When it came time to decide a winner, Adam put on a Beasties/Let It Be mashup and joked that the contestants would have a dance contest to decide the winner. That's what happened & Fiorella was declared the Queen Bee. Fun. "C Is For Cookie" coming in June!
DEARLY BELOVED PRINCE CONTEST
Yes, Pants made that just for the contest and had someone hold up a sheet to project his silhouette onto (sadly, no photo avail)
ELVIS VS COSTELLO
CHECK OUT BUTCH'S PICTURES AND CAPTIONS!Thanks to a big party next door to Kava, being a night before President's Day and guest KJ Pants offering up 8000 songs on his laptop, this was our biggest/best night yet. A great way to end our run of Sundays (moving to Tuesdays next month!). Pants did a great job of MC'ing and pressing play all night, leaving Adam free to run down to the Casbah to sing with Roger the regular, celebrating his one year anniversary of getting married to Sara (with Adam officiating) onstage at the Casbah. He formed a band just for the anniversary show and bassist Jon Kanis came down to Kava afterwards and promptly won our Elvis vs Costello contest with a stellar "Peace Love & Understanding".
Too many highlights to name. Well.....Mark the bartender finally sang. Paloma and Davey did God Save The Queen with Paloma scowling up front and Davey on one knee behind her like he was her Flava Flav. Adam was a kid in a karaoke candy store and went alphabetically instead of trying to figure out what he wanted to sing most (Lily Allen, Beasties, Bee Gees, Benatar ("Hell is for hell!"), Black Crowes, Irene Cara...). Some girl took off her sweater and managed to get it caught in the mic cord which took 5 minutes to remove. Laura Jane kept stealing the show. First, she brought an Elvis wig, shades and scarf on a mannequin for public use. Then she finally lived her dream of singing Soundgarden karaoke (twice), crawled onstage to grab a married man's balls to help him hit high notes and threw her bra at Pants, which fit PERFECTLY over his head. Pants brought a cowbell and refused to take any money for his services. "Just buy more karaoke," he said with a grin. He is truly the patron saint of TCFK. Come by next time to sing more of his 8 trillion songs while Adam's player is in the shop.

ABC'S OF KARAOKE: THE A TEAM
Despite the rain and lure of Super Bowl Sunday, history was made at our first ever edition of the ABC's of Karaoke. The night started off with songs by ABC, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Charlie Daniels Band, ELO, Freddy Fender, Grandmaster Flash, Whitney Houston, Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson, the Kingsmen, Liam Lynch, Muse, Naughty By Nature, Oasis, Pixies, Queen, Bonnie Raitt, the Smiths, James Taylor, U2, Van Halen, Whitesnake, XTC, Young MC and ZZ Top. Phew! After that, it was all about the letter A. The Angels and Paula tried to win like the NY Giants but it was Paloma's Adam Ant that proved victorious. Stay tuned for the next ABC's of Karaoke, "Let It B", coming in 2 months!

YOU'RE THE STAR, MAN BOWIE CONTEST
Eight Bowie wannabes (and two actual Davids) squared off last night in fine "fashion" behind a Labyrinth backdrop. It came down to Bowie experts Henry, who showed up in shiny pants and crooned "Ashes To Ashes", and Pants, who showed up with third eye makeup and a sharp late 70's era Bowie vest-suit and hypnotized us with "Rock & Roll Suicide". A Zoolander style Bowie-off was called but after the two traded off ..s", there was still no clear-cut winner. The two were BOTH declared the Bowiest-Of-All, prizes and drinks were bestowed upon both contestants and they celebrated with a "Rebel Rebel" duet complete with dance party. Other highlights included our first black man doing rap (ironically, Marky Mark), birthday girl Tricia's debut (complete with 3 piece Rush airband) and not one but TWO performances by a group of girls who became the first folks to pay $10 to sing songs from the Dreaded Ten ("Black Velvet" and "Friends In Low Places").

GIRLS JUST WANT TO SING SONGS
In true TCFK fashion, a male won our female songs contetst. Eric didn't win over the crowd with a Bonnie Raitt song we didn't know but came back strong, astounding us with a screamy Bjork classic right before the big vote. It came down to Eric and friends Suzanne and Nilo, who all faced off in a "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" tie-breaker. Suzanne and Nilo won points for incorporating "Girls just want to sing songs" into the lyrics and some dance moves into their performance but their friends' hands got tired clapping for both of them leaving Eric free to win by a nose. Suzanne and Nilo want a rematch. Eric picked a 16 song rap disc as his prize choice, which will add some much needed hiphop to our catalogue.
DECMEBER 16
In this Sunday's Metalmania contest, Molly Kirby won yet again with a performance of a song by the most brutal and evil of all metal bands: Poison. All of the contestants hailed satan with fierce readings of Sabbath, AC/DC & Dio tunes but, apparently, nothing is more rawking than "Talk Dirty To Me". A group of local citizens is banding together with local government officials to have Kirby banned from Cover Me Badd events altogether, alleging that her winning streak might fall under the definition of a monopoly.
PS Thanks for upping attendance by close to 400% since our premiere! It was getting a little lonely.

Dec 2nd
San Diego House Parties' Golden Years' party went OFF. It was my first time attending and they have a very cool thing going on. Regular themed parties with live bands and other fun stuff. The girls are nice as heck to open their house to the masses and they've been problem-free enough to keep 'em going for close to a year! Unreal. Bands play in their basement, a ton of people pack their backyard and everyone else was up in the house listening to the debut of Too Cool For Karaoke. Lots of kids dressed up as senior citizens and Adam resurrected his Geezer outfit, even bringing back the oven-mitts, cookies and pockets full of Worther's.
Keith from Vision Of A Dying World (our favorite band in town) was our first singer EVER with his lovely rendition of Oasis' "Wonderwall". What was supposed to be a quick 90 minute preview night turned into over four hours of drunken nutiness. Too many highlights to name. Obscure gems were mostly shunned to make way for big Madonna, Journey and Kelly Clarkson singalongs though large gangs crowded the mics for a block of Smiths and Morrissey songs. Great fun and still going strong at 3am when we pulled away. Whoa.
Our official debut at Kava Lounge was quite a bit less crowded. Starting something new on a Sunday night during the holidays might be crazy but aren't we all a little crazy? After last night, the Kava is now, without question, the coolest club in town hosting karaoke. Great vibe, stage, lights, raised DJ (KJ) booth and staff. Local podcasters, spelling bee champs and karaoke hosts flocked by the half-dozen to sing their way into the history books at our inaugural party. An anonymous Eastern European earlybird was our first singer with a gutsy choice of Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye" and knocked it out of the park. The Midnight Morrissey contest was won by female Morrissey impersonator Molly Kirby. Rumors of her friend Aaron getting a lung enlargement operation to cheer louder have been greatly exaggerated. Adam closed out the night with Annie's "Tomorrow" to cheer up the Smiths fans and remind us that it's all uphill from here.
