Hey folks,
I have uploaded another song onto The Coup's MySpace profile (www.myspace.com/thecoupmusic, in case this is gets copied to another blog).
It's called "Captain Sterling's Little Problem", from our latest album- Pick A Bigger Weapon. It features Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave on guitar.

The song depicts a wartime rebellion by soldiers who want to return home from the war, against their officers. I originally recorded the song as the theme for the documentary film "Sir! No Sir!" by David Zieger (www.sirnosir.com). See the trailer on YouTube. The film is about G.I. rebellion during the Vietnam war (at one point a Pentagon report deemed half of the soldiers in Vietnam as "mutinous and not to be trusted"), and the song is inspired by the stories that some of the veterans tell in the film. It turns out that the largely unreported g.i. rebellions played a very important role in stopping the Vietnam war.

So far about 600,000 Iraqi civilians have died in this war (adults and children) [I had this number at 100,000 until I got the new information given to me by Jenna below]*, and at least 3,100 U.S. soldiers have died. Not to mention soldiers from U.S.-allied countries who have died. Many more have come back injured, missing limbs, brutally scarred, and/or suffering debilitating psychological trauma. It has recently come out, although already obvious to most, that many of the U.S. soldiers in Iraq want to come home.

I have this suggestion: the soldiers should demand to be returned home, using any means necessary to make this happen. This could mean petitions (as have already been started), and it could mean organized physical rebellion against their officers. This would lead to a swift end to this war, saving countless lives, both U.S. and Iraqi. Bush doesn't care about these soldiers lives, much less any Iraqi lives. The military brass doesn't care about these soldiers lives. If they did, they would be taking the Lt. Ehrin Watada route. Knowing, as many people do, that this war is about profit and power for a select few, top military officials- unable or unwilling to think for themselves- have sent 18, 19, and 20-something year old youths to their deaths. Congress hasn't done more than give lip service to wanting the war to end. The people that are directly affected by this war are going to have to act. A rebellion by the rank-and-file of the military would be less harmful to those troops than if they just followed orders. And with most of the country dead against this war, they would definitely receive the heroes' welcome home. Talk about making history. Millions of people all over the world would support them in whatever legal proceedings ensued from such an event. Whatever happened, it would be a better situation than being in a pine box, losing limbs, or defecating from their abdomen into a colostomy bag. Moreover, it would be the right thing to do.

Much has been publicized about the role that music plays in the military today. I've seen a few news segments about the music that soldiers are listening to on their Walkmans and MP3 players. How they listen to certain songs to get in the mood for what they have to do. Besides the motivation of purely expressing my thoughts, my experience, and my emotions, I also make music to influence people to see my point of view. It's similar to how Justin Timberlake wants you to agree with him that he's bringing sexy back, but different.

So here's the idea:

The Coup has about 25,000 "friends"/fans on Myspace right now. What would happen if all of you downloaded "Captain Sterling's Little Problem" and sent it, via email or burned CD, to everyone you know in the military? Would it put the idea of a rebellion in some of their minds? Would it help to spark a G.I. movement that makes Congress act more decisively?

Let's see.
For additional info and inspiration, watch and send Sir! No Sir! when possible.

Who's down with the plan? Let me know.

Let's make it happen,
Boots

*Hello Boots,

I think your estimate of Iraqi deaths is too conservative:

"A new household survey of Iraq has found that approximately 600,000 people have been killed in the violence of the war that began with the U.S. invasion in March 2003. The survey was conducted by an American and Iraqi team of public health researchers. Data were collected by Iraqi medical doctors with analysis conducted by faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. The results will be published in the British medical journal, The Lancet. The survey is the only population-based assessment of fatalities in Iraq during the war. The method, a survey of more than 1800 households randomly selected in clusters that represent Iraq's population, is a standard tool of epidemiology and is used by the U.S. Government and many other agencies. The survey also reflects growing sectarian violence, a steep rise in deaths by gunshots, and very high mortality among young men. An additional 53,000 deaths due to non-violent causes were estimated to have occurred above the pre-invasion mortality rate, most of them in recent months, suggesting a worsening of health status and access to health care."

During a discussion on C-Span the authors of the study also pointed out that due to safety concerns, researchers did NOT survey the most violent areas. It stands to reason that the most violent areas are going to have greatest number of casualties and therefore their estimate might actually be lower than the actual number.
They also stated that until recently, nonviolent deaths were surprisingly low but this is starting to change as the infrastructure is finally breaking down to the point of being unable to provide necessary services to the remaing population.

p.s. Here are the lyrics to Captain Sterling's Little Problem:

Get yo ass off the flo
Get yo ass off the flo
Get yo ass off the flo
Get yo ass off the flo

It's a wrap then
(Hey!)
Grab the Mac-10
(Yeah!)
Plan of action
(What!?)
Kill the Captain
(Yeah!)
Excuse me colonel sir, May I request please
Permission to go home or blow off your knees
It's a wrap then
(Hey!)
Grab the Mac-10
(Yeah!)
Plan of action
(What!?)
Kill the Captain
(Yeah!)
In case you're wonderin, well yes I'm gon fight
I'm finna join the army, but one you don't like

Needed some stackoli to get free like a parolee
Now I'm in apparel colored shit and guacamole
In another country brought to you by Coca-Coley
Ordered from the top to shoot everything holey-
Shit I'm nineteen and I'm missin' all my homies
All that fight for freedom shit- we know that shit is phoney
Free to work at Shoney's bout one hour for six boneys
And everyday we hustle scratch and scrape for macaronis
And cheese, bullets squeeze outta my assault weapon
Tear through the air
Then his chest
Then his breaths end
Looked like my homie from the hood I be reppin
I wept then, changing from a soldier to a veteran
Left in shambles bout this kin of no relation
Crept in the sergeant's tent with quiet calculation
Message from the soldiers to the brass administration
Looks like Captain Sterling's finna have a situation

It's a wrap then
(Hey!)
Grab the Mac-10
(Yeah!)
Plan of action
(What!?)
Kill the Captain
(Yeah!)
Excuse me colonel sir, May I request please
Permission to go home or blow off your knees
It's a wrap then
(Hey!)
Grab the Mac-10
(Yeah!)
Plan of action
(What!?)
Kill the Captain

In case you're wonderin, well yes I'm gon fight
I'm finna join the army, but one you don't like

Get yo ass off the flo
Get yo ass off the flo
Get yo ass off the flo
Get yo ass off the flo

"I have just killed my first but it may not be the last one"
I screamed this at the sergeant with his head pressed to the magnum
You brought us to this country not to free but bodybag them
And free up all their money so accounting firms can add them
Drag them and their corporates to their own battle
Now they're dragging usw to the slaughter like cattle
Me and this whole unit we will start to ramshackle
Listen very closely you can here the fire crackle
You could weigh the air as he was breathing out his nostrils
Couldn't understand why we were seeming so hostile
Said "We spread democracy" like he was preaching gospel
Slapped him in his head and said "Now shut up Sergeant Roscoe!
If this is not explicit, lemme tell ya straight out
We'll no longer kill to keep this country drained out
We want up outta here like on the next planes out
Tell the Cap'n make it or we'll blow his brains out!"

It's a wrap then
(Hey!)
Grab the Mac-10
(Yeah!)

I'm a National Guardsman who just returned from a year-long tour of Iraq. It was in Iraq that I found The Coup's music and I really felt I had found something real, something true, something genuine. While I was in Baghdad, I made Iraqi friends, only to deal with them dying later. The toll on Iraqi civilians is much more than anyone who hasn't been there will ever know. Serving (serving who is debatable) in Iraq creates an interesting paradox for many of us in the military, and it is not something I want to do again.

Every war needs a theme song. Every revolution a soundtrack.
Until the "casualties" of this war are humanized, their suffering made real by you, me, and the decision makers in this country, nothing will change.

Thanks for the permission to mass distribute this song.

what a stupid concept. do you have any idea what happens to troops that cause "dissent?" you should have looked into that when you were doing your facts.

no kudos.

Sanjaya who is not on tour anymore,

Troops who cause "dissent" end wars. Like the graffiti from WWI said "mutiny is the conscience of war". You should have looked into history, instead of fixing your hair and sucking on flags.
More proof that unlike the military, there is no written test for hipsters. Maybe you should enlist, it would give you more chances to get your picture taken with 'the shroud of morons', aka the US flag.

This is the best song on the album and maybe the best song you guys have done since Ride the Fence. I have a friend that went to Iraq and he has this album and some of the guys in the unit listen to it when they can. I have sent them copies of your past albums and they are passing them around. The guys from the Bay know who you are and want to give you props for what you are doing. Keep it up.

what a great idea, but way ahead of you. been slipping disks that include the song as well as other like minded ones and copies of the film sir no sir into care packages sent out for months through a local organization, and thus far it has been met with a great response. thanks for the permission to distribute, and for getting the idea out for others to do the same. getting involved with your local support the troops organization and volunteering to help pack boxes is a great way to mass distibute such things.

In the same vein:

The creators of Sir No Sir! are asking for people stateside to buy copies of the DVD (only $10) and send them to active duty servicemen they know. More and more military folks are turning against this war, and as SNS shows, just a little organization can spread until it becomes a movement that SHUTS DOWN the US war machine.

Thanks for supplying a soundtrack to support war resisters!

Ain't it sick how Bush signed an order to keep the media from showing the wounded soldiers, and coffins of the dead soldiers comming in from Iraq. I mean we hear the B.S. Numbers they give us, but to see it is a different thing. Not to mention the dead Iraqi civilians...... I mean close your eyes and try to imagin 100,000 + dead bodies........... Im feelin the song and I support the PLAN OF ACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you never fail to amaze me... mind - soul - body - spirit.

In the great words of Mark Twain: "Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out... and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel.... And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" - with his mouth."

May this savage, wickedness we call "a need for a democracy" come to a much needed - end.

Hope to see you at Coachella...

this does seem like an amzing opportunity to make a difference, but the problem is that there are many of us who dont know anyone in the military, or anyone who we could sent anything to. I am all for this though, if there was a way you could provide a place to send things. Your music does strike the cord of revolution and change in ones heart when one listens to it, bring my thoughts back to Rage Against the Machine. there will always be a place in the worlds heart and ears for music that calls for change. I back your idea fully and await any other ways i could help.

I have family that served in Vietnam & they came back extremely F*cked up! I was a just a child, but as I grew they were still F*cked up!
Only in the last 10 years have they managed to kind of 'pull it together'. To this day, they both refuse to discuss the war or anything that happened (I've only hear 1 story from each in my entire life) there.
Also, my Mother informed me one time & one time only - that she had lost ALL of the Senior male classmates from Fremont, CA in 1967 & 50% of the male classmates of 1968 (Irvington High School).

I have not supported this war or ANY war my entire life & I NEVER WILL!!!! WAR IS NEVER THE ANSWER!!!!

Thank you, so very much for authorizing distribution & getting the word out about "Sir! No Sir!".
I saw it many years ago & cannot say my eyes were closed, but it opened them even more

Ok, so this song is the one thing off the album that really bothers me and not in that good kind of bothered way. I'm not saying I don't support the guts of it because the military right now is structured to take advantage of poorer folks, but life sucks for sergeants and captains, too. I know a few who have died. Alot of them don't want to be there either. Dunno. The lower ranking officers are just trying to take care of the people under them as best they can in shitty circumstances. Maybe I'm missing the point and its just a personal reaction, but I really don't like to hear any more death preached over there. Enough is enough.

Without a military full of eager to obey soldiers, blind followers of orders, none of this would be happening. Everybody there is a grown-up, an adult. They are responsible for their actions. If you act without thought..... you are as much to blame. If you kill because you are ordered.... how can you not be held responsible for Murder?

Hey Maura,
The point of the song and the idea is to stop as many senseless deaths as possible. I understand that we are all just cogs in the machine, even officers in the military. But to not rebel and change what's happening means to allow many more people to be killed everyday, rank-and-file soldiers, officers, and civilian Iraqi adults and children. I'm just saying fight back by any means necessary. In the song, there is the threat of violence if the officers do not co-operate with their efforts to return home and not have to kill anymore. At that point, if the officers are just trying to take care of the people under them as best they can, they would facilitate their return as best they could. If someone were to advocate soldiers NOT physically stopping this, that would actually be preaching death. As I stated above, many reputable sources put the death toll into the hundreds of thousands. Should German soldiers, who were also just cogs in the machine, have physically rebelled against their officers during WW2? The physical rebellion would probably have involved violence, but how many lives would have been saved? That's a hypothetical situation, however the ongoing deaths in Iraq are not.
Love.
Boots

While I absolutely agree with your sentiment, I also think field commanders are doing their best to protect their soldiers and deal with a terrible situation. Previously, (before they jumped on the anti-war band wagon) BS media outlets showed soldiers as proudly "spreading democracy". I think their comments were likely genuine. I don't think anyone put in that kind of situation can be objective. If you are put in a situation where your life is in danger and you are required to kill other human beings, you HAVE to believe your actions are just and noble.

I want to know which U.S. companies own "war stocks"---they should be boycotted. The only way to affect change with these folx is to hit them financially.

just my thoughts...

A persistent myth is that body paint and teach-ins got the US out of Vietnam, but the Vietcong, Barry Goldwater and the GI Resistance would probably disagree.

Some people still think Gandhi is gonna slide down a rainbow on a unicorn and carry the US military out of Iraq, but I have a feeling they'll be waiting a while.

Odds are, people are squeamish about the idea of mutiny, because military officers are college educated, privileged, and tend to be white guys. I'm not sure how that kind of math works. How many Iraqi or enlisted lives are equal one to one officer.? Apparently thousands.
