"At a recent New York city screening of 'The Wrestler', one decidedly homeless-looking fellow stood out in the smartly dressed crowd."  So begins Adam Duerson's review of Darren Aranofsky's new film 'The Wrestler" in the 12/22/08 issue of Sports Illustrated.  My name is Mick Foley-a 3 time WWE Champion and author (hand-written, no ghost writer) of two New York Times 1 Bestselling Memoirs - and I am that decidedly homeless-looking fellow who Duerson sat next to at a December 5 media screening of the critically acclaimed movie.

I play an important role in Duerson's review; the real life man seemingly facing many of the same challenges that Mickey Rourke's fictional Randy The Ram Robinson, an aging broken down wrestler, faces in the film.  Early in the review Duerson sites my oversized duffle bag, in addition to a "billowing red flannel shirt and sweat pants and a crude Grizzly Adams haircut".  That duffle bag makes an appearance later in the review as an example that "finding dignity in retirement can be tricky".  You see, of all things, the duffle bag contained…drum roll please…a Santa Claus suit that I was to wear at a Twisted Sister Holiday Show later that evening.  Duerson follows that shocking revelation by writing, "He's not broke, he explained, but he is still making appearances on the road at least 10 days a month".

Here is the problem; Adam Duerson, in his quest to find a theme or hook for his review, lets his omission of facts and questionable interpretation of details and events pertaining to his time spent with me, mar what could have been a fine piece of journalism.

Earlier today, I spoke at considerable length (40 minutes) with Duerson, who seemed to have had trouble seeing why I might find his portrayal of me in the review to be unflattering.  I told him it was clear to me, that based on his review, Sports Illustrated readers (according to Wikipedia, over 3 million subscribers, up to 20 million weekly readers) would be likely to see me as a former wrestling star, fallen on rough times, taking jobs as a homeless-looking Santa Claus at rock concerts just to get by.

"You did know,"  I said to Duerson " that I was there, like you, as a journalist, reviewing the movie?"

"Yes," Duerson said, "I did".

A few days earlier I had been asked by Slate.com, a popular and respected web site of the Washington Post to write a review from a wrestler's prospective.  I asked Duerson why he had failed to mention this little fact.  Duerson told me he was pretty sure he had used the words "media screening" in his review, which would have at least somewhat conveyed the idea to the reader that I was attending the screening as a journalist.  Except, as I informed him, the word "media" is nowhere to be found.  Just "screening", all by its lonesome.  Duerson then told me that his editor, Mark Bechtel (a senior S.I. editor, a writer of the magazine since 1995), had decided not to include the word "media".

"You do know I have written books, (8 of them) right?" I said to Duerson.  Yeah, turns out he knew but opted not to include that little fact.  Why are these omissions important?  Because, in my opinion, mentioning them would be an inconvenient conflict with the guy that Duerson and his editor seem to want in this story. Let's face it, if Duerson mentioned the Slate review, or five New York Times best-selling books (only two went to 1), his suggestions that follow would lack a certain amount of credibility. Apparently, they did not want to infer that the homeless looking fellow with the Santa suit might actually be doing just fine; that he not only had been legendarily thrifty with his wrestling money but had other income sources as well.

And about that Santa suit?  The one that illustrates the trickiness in finding dignity in retirement? "Did you really think I was doing it for money?" I asked him.  Duerson told me that I had referred to the Twisted Sister appearance as "my next gig" O.K. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that one, even if the Oxford American Dictionary that I am looking at right now makes no allusion or mention of payment or compensation in its definition of "gig".  So let me be clear – I was not paid for this "gig" which I had penciled in on my calendar last New Year's Eve when the band's lead singer Dee Snider, a long time personal friend, asked me to.  Besides, I love being Santa – go ahead google Mick Foley and Santa or Mick Foley and Santa's Village.  I dare you.

I asked Duerson if the very act of putting on the red suit and hat was undignified.  If dressing up as the big guy in front of thousands of service members in Iraq in 2004 was undignified?  If doing likewise in Afghanistan a year later was undignified?  He assured me it was not.  So, what exactly made this Twisted Sister situation so utterly lacking in dignity?  Granted, helping out a famous friend may not be the same as entertaining troops in a war zone, but was it really that demeaning?  According to Duerson, it was the association with a band, Twisted Sister, that was "stuck in the 80's" that seemed undignified.

As it turns out, omitting the word "media" was not Mark Bechtel's only decision (at least according to my conversation with Duerson) to alter the original text.  Let's return to an earlier sentence "He's not broke he explained, but he is still making appearances on the road at least 10 days a month."

The phrase "he's not broke", Duerson explained to me, was not his idea.  Duerson's original text (according to him) read:  "He doesn't need the money".  Is this just a subtle editorial alteration or is it a sizable shift in tone, message and implied inference?  It is my belief that the text was re-worded in order to show me in a less enviable financial position.  "Doesn't need the money" is simply not the same as "He's not broke".  One sentence implies success, the other failure.  One sentence suggests winner, the other loser.

Now, lets get to those 10 appearances a month on the road.  Duerson has already established that I am a homeless looking fellow, finding dignity in retirement to be tricky.  In his review, Duerson actually does an effective job in describing the harsh reality facing Rourke's washed up, broken down Ram character; writing of "dreary autograph shows where no one shows up" and "tussling in 500 seat hotel ballrooms."

So, given Duerson's previous description of me, given the description of the Ram's depressing appearances, and given a total lack of information of any kind about my "10 appearances a month", what kind of conclusion can a reader be expected to reach? Would a reader guess, for example, that I'd lectured at MIT? Apparently, Duerson failed to do much research concerning my actual appearances.  Five minutes (or less) of research would have shown him that five of those monthly appearances are for TNA Wrestling; four of them on Spike's nationally televised and internationally broadcast TNA Impact and one on national Pay Per View.

A little more background work on Duerson's part might have unearthed even more information about my appearances. When I spoke to Duerson on the phone for the first time – December 10th – I was in North Carolina to support the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which raises money for troops suffering from brain trauma and injury. Two days later, I drove seven hours in the rain, sleet and snow to take part in a toy drive for needy children. He might have even mentioned my November trip to the West African country of Sierra Leone where I attended the dedication of four small community schools that I had funded.  There is a nice little story on www.poststar.com (search Mick Foley) if anyone wants to look at a slightly different portrait than the one that Mr. Duerson offered to the Sports Illustrated readership.  And hey, I just spent part of my Christmas Eve with a few hundred homeless people - real homeless people too, not just homeless looking, like me.  Real kids in need, living in shelters, wondering if Santa might have a little something for them too.  Real parents, down on their luck, depending on the kindness of strangers and the magic of Christmas (a wonderful group called Christmas Magic) to make their holidays a little brighter.  Maybe I should have shared the SI review with them - they might have gotten a kick out of Adam Duerson's insensitive stereotype of what he seems to think homeless people look like.

Which brings me back to Duerson's opening line, "One decidedly homeless looking fellow stood out in the smartly dressed crowd." Decidedly homeless? Who exactly made that decision?  Did the smartly dressed crowd (which Duerson apparently considered himself one of) reach some kind of consensus while I was busy being caught up in Mickey Rourke's remarkable performance?  I am well aware of the casual nature of my wardrobe and will admit to an occasional fashion faux pas.  As a matter of fact, I just received a Christmas card from General James Conway, the commandant (head honcho) of the United States Marine Corps and I immediately thought back to my regrettable decision to wear sweat pants and work boots when I was a guest in his home.

At a couple of points during our 40 minute conversation, Duerson claimed that I didn't fully understand what it was like to work with editors.  Actually, I do.  I have written eight books, remember?  I have worked with several editors, including a tough but very helpful one on my Slate piece.  I certainly don't know everything about the editorial process, but I do know this:  A writer fights for what he believes is important in a piece of work, whether it be a memoir, a novel, a children's book or a movie review.

I wonder if Adam Duerson fought for his viewpoint when faced with his editor's proposed changes.  I think he knew his editor's changes would alter the reader's perception of me in a negative way.  I would like to think he knew that his initial way was more accurate; still misleading but slightly more accurate.  But, I believe Adam Duerson lacked either the ability or willingness to effectively fight for what he should have known was right.

In a way, it is a shame Mr. Duerson chose to sit next to me at all.  At the time of his arrival there were plenty of available seats at that small media screening.  He chose to sit next to me, he told me during that December 10th phone call, specifically because he knew who I was and thought that a wrestler's insight would be helpful.  It's a shame because it seems like I got in the way of what is in some ways a well written review of a great movie.  Certainly, I second Mr. Duerson's belief that The Wrestler is the sports movie of the year.  As anyone who reads my Slate review will see, I did feel a distinct emotional connection to Rourke's character.   If Duerson had chosen to examine that emotional connection instead of concentrating on a misleading representation of my current status in life, I may have made a valuable addition to his review.  Sadly, he let his sense of fashion and musical taste stand in the way of a more nuanced parallel between life and art.

You know, that Adam Duerson phone call had me down for most of the day.  For a kid who grew up with SI covers plastered to his walls, being depicted as a homeless looking fellow, having trouble finding dignity in retirement was a pretty severe blow.  But, a few hours ago I received a phone call that brightened my day.  It was Mickey Rourke, calling to say he had read my review for Slate and really enjoyed it, that my words had meant a lot to him. Words that millions of Sports Illustrated readers would not have known the existence of.

speaking the truth, brother.. if i find myself in a world where attire makes the man i need to wake the hell up and get out of the diddy video..

you are a true ambassador of the written word.. the fact that mr. duerson seems oblivious to reality shouldn't hang on you any longer than it takes to wipe your angle..

i just read the slate review.. very enticing, really makes me want to see the movie..

Sports Illustrated has demonstrated an emphatic bias against pro wrestling in recent years, so I am not in the least surprised at the way the article was altered and slanted. The editor was most likely very annoyed at having to say something positive about a movie about pro wrestling, so he decided to balance that by trashing your reputation. The editor is clearly of the "don't let the facts get on the way of a good story" school of reporting.

You were used Mick. He knew precisely what he was doing when deciding to sit next to you in my opinion. I also think that you are smart enough to know that he understood exactly what he was writing in his piece and that he knew exactly how it would be received. Luckily for you, so won't everyone else - who doesn't know Mick Foley? Everyone will know this writer is a no good... I won't even go there.

This is just an example of a sports writer trying to paint what he considers "fake" wrestling in a bad light. Someone who knows nothing about it, just like nearly everyone else who represents the mainstream media. They all just end up sounding stupid to most of their readers or viewers, so don't worry about it Mick.

The only 2 things that matter are thus:

1st: Foley is God.

2nd: In 10 years, Mick Foley will still be remembered as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, and a celebrity who will be remembered as one of the ones that went out of his way to honor his fans, and to pay his success back to his community, while Adam Duerson will be still kowtowing to his editor's nonsensical demands.

You hit the nail on the head Mick. It seems as if he really didn't want to make that little effort to really look into your life to know that your not just a retired wrestler who's struggling.

Also basically insulting you because of the way you dress...I hoped he apologized to you for that because last time I checked, being comfortable in any clothes whether it be a flannel shirt and sweats or a business suit, is what everyone wants.

Don't let what he wrote bother you, because if he didn't take the time to look into your life, you don't need to give a second thought about his review.

Your response is so well written but then I would not expect anything else from you Mick since the magic you brought to the ring you also bring to your writing, you have such a magical way with words. Mr Duerson, and his editor, should probably have paid more attention to the old saying "Do no judge a book by its cover" instead of trying to create something that does not exist. We are behind you all the way Mick, regardless of what clothes you wear and what music you listen too.

Best regards,

Wow, talk about really bad journalism from the SI. But that seems to be a mayor problem now days. I work myself as a journalist (though I'm reviewing metal music and concerts and so on) and I'm amazed at how some articles can make it all the way to the printer. Not only is he showing disrespect and coming up with some lies to (probably) sell extra issues. But it seems he's more interested in getting annoyed at his surroundings then concentrating on the movie. Doing a few movie reviews myself I really can't understand this as I'm mostly concentrating on the movie to write a good and interesting review about it.

Btw, thank you very much for an interesting review about "The Wrestler". It won't be up on the cinemas here in Sweden until February next year but reading your review I think it will be worth the wait.

A merry Christmas (a bit late) and a happy new year!

Hey Mick, I just wanted to say this is an extremely well written response to a weak, over zealous reporters attempt to make himself feel better about his work by failing to mention your accomplishments in what he seemingly views as his field. Anyone that has followed your career ( in wrestling and journalism ) will not even give this review a second thought. Mick, you have accomplished more in your comfortable attire than this man in his Armani suits ever will. When we all were young, we were taught the valuable lesson " Never judge a book by it's cover " ( Maybe Mr. Adam Duerson was sick that day in Kindergarten. ) I can not wait to see " The Wrestler " from your review, it sounds like it will be one of those timeless classics. Quite frankly, I do not believe his ideas about "washed up, broken down wreslters ", for some reason he fails to mention all the sacrafices Pro- Wrestlers and there families make even on the independant level. Thank you for posting your response for all of us to enjoy, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and I wish you an Amazing New year.

Great One

I am afraid that I don't understand. I didn't read the review you speak of (I guess I should) but I trust in the accuracy of the facts of the negative portrayal levied against you. Anyone who knows Mick Foley in his public life is well aware of the Christmas fascination, the legend of the red flannel, the sweat pants and Oscar the grouch sweat shirts. THAT'S the human muppet we know. As for taking "gig's" upwards of 10 day's a month...is it to be expected that once you retired from active wrestling that you were going to sit home and become a recluse? I wish I had that schedule, I work 60 hours a week! ANYONE in their right mind would love to be able to do what you do, Mick. You earned it. So you have a unique sense of fashion, man you should see what I wear myself on my time off!

What makes you think that Adam Duerson is important enough an individual in this world to shape anyones opinion about anything? Mick, it's my opinion that you are pissed about nothing. Those who know you, KNOW YOU. Those who never heard the legend of Foley..well, they don't necessarily make YOUR world go 'round, so no harm done. It's like this: Are you homeless? Are you starving? Do you NOT own anything you could wear at least to a casual meeting? Of course your not homeless, of course your not starving, and of course (I am sure) somewhere in your chest of drawers I am sure you could find something more upscale to wear should the need arise. Does Adam Duerson pay your mortgage? Does he pay your car payments? Does he even pay your light bill? Does he make or break you friends? NO! So by virtue of these facts it is my opinion (And I am sure I am not alone in this sentiment) Adam Duerson is a non-factor in the life and times of Mick Foley.

Don't sweat the small stuff. THE SMALL STUFF, Mick.

Rock on my brethren,

~Chris

I have never read SI for the reason that most of the articles are poorly written and opinionated. If a legend such as you ever needs to worry what anyone thinks of him then its them that has issues, not you.

I have watched you and admired your dedication to the business since I was a kid. And you are one of the main people who made me want to be a wrestler when I grew up. But now at 31 that dream is gone. But I still admire your dedication to the business, even in "retirement".

As a long time SI subscriber, I was, to say the least, disappointed in their review and reviewer. Your response is dead-on, and I will be looking for it in the "Letters" of an upcoming issue of SI. It may be the best written piece to appear in their magazine in a long, long time. Hope you and your family had a very Merry Christmas, and we wish you the happy New Year!

Mick as always you prove yourself to be a capable writer and great at expressing yourself with this response. However I feel that this message falls into 1 of 2 catagories, it will either be "falling on deaf ears" or preaching to the choir".

Many wrestling fans and people in the wrestling business feel that this new movie is going to give their beloved artform a new found multi-media and cultural respect. Anyone thinking this is wrong. It is going to create further sterotypes and negativity towards the people involved. That is not a shot at the movie, it is a shot at public perception of the stories and subjects involved. People like Duerson, his editor and so many others are not going to have more respect for wrestling and the people involved because of this film they are going to have less.

Well done Mick! It looks like you did more research for your response to Sports Illustrated than Duerson did for his movie review of "The Wrestler". You knew the senior S.I. editor is a writer of the magazine since 1995. You even looked up meaning of words in the dictionary to make sure everything you were writing was accurate. It's obvious he was just trying to use you as an example for his article, portraying you as an aging broken down wrestler. The joke was on him, Ha! You should NEVER judge a book by it's cover! Anyone who knows you personally, heard you talking in interviews, commentating a wrestling match or read your books knows you are a kind-hearted and highly intelligent man. As for the way you dress, I'm not fond of flannels but in no way, to me, do you look homeless. There's nothing wrong with dressing comfortably. I think you look so cuddly! They owe you a retraction and an apology! If they do that, they probably will put it where it can't easily be seen. They should also print your response but that's probably asking for too much!

I've read your review of the movie and you did a great job as usual! You make me want to go out and see it!

I also read the article about you on poststar.com. That article was much more accurate and showed the Mick we all know and adore! It showed what a kind and generous man you are!

Remember to always keep your chin up Mick unless you plan on boxing then I suggest you keep it tucked in! Ha!

Have a nice day!!! :):):)

Listen Mick, what's important here is what we, the fans, think of Mick Foley, and I don't think that this article, written by some hack trying to put himself over, is going to change a single thing. I'm sure that you thought this yourself, but as a fan of your trade(you as a wrestler) and of your art(you as an author)I thought that it may help you to feel better about this to here from one if us, a true fan. Believe it or not, you being screwed over actually endears you to us even more. The more that the "man" tries to hold down Mick Foley, the more we tend to love Mick Foley.Besides, you have have taken smarter chair shots than what this guy tried to do to you. I doubt that he knew that you would even notice his "pencil shots". This is what happens when someone tries to show off his alleged "knowledge" of a subject instead of letting art present itself.
Keep being true to yourself and you will always be number one with your fans Mick.We love you, man.

Mick, first of all congratulations on a well written, insightful review of The Wrestler.

Secondly, in response to SI, I am very disappointed in their portrayal of you. If anyone knows Mick Foley or even knows of him, know that you're a great guy who loves to make others happy or help. For SI to take that quality you have and turn it into a smear campaign is not only a shame but low class. As you said, you could have been a great asset to their review.

SI, ESPN and all of the other "main-stream" sports media always look down on the wrestling business. Two things they should realize: 1) Most of the wrestlers in the business are more athletic than their "main-stream" heroes they gush about on TV and in articles. 2) They should watch any WWE or TNA program and see that their "main-stream" heroes are sitting front row watching the action. Sometimes, getting involved!

Happy Holidays to you and your family, Mick. Don't let someone who is obviously so uneducated get you down.

I love to read your work Mick, rather it be memoirs or otherwise, but please do me one favor. Cut out the red background! I have to cut and paste your blogs into Word just so my eyes don't bleed from the black on red. I understand it goes with the Mick Foley/flannel/Cactus Jack motif, but have some love for us readers!

Love ya Mick and keep up the good work!

Two words can sum up my opinion of Duerson's credibility: "Sports Illustrated". I hate SI and haven't read it for years, because of poor writing. And he's writing the movie reviews for them. Not exactly a "cover story"-caliber writer, I would assume.

Maybe if you had worn the Corporate Mankind shirt and tie, he would have thought differently of you!

Sports Illustrated has had it out for wrestling for years and years Mick. Just like them trying to tarnish the names of wrestlers during the whole steroid scandal. I think it's some kind of personal issue, and Mick Foley is just meant to be some collateral for Duerson to damage in order to get his own name out there. SI just can't accept that a movie about wrestling is acclaimed. It still can't accept that the wrestling industry is acclaimed by so many fans. Myself included. And they think that they're making some kind of a revelation by saying, "Look! It's fake", or mocking the stars of it. Duerson is clearly a moron, in that he chose probably the most intelligent pro-wrestler of all-time to attack. Shows how much he knows. Although, my position on TNA Wrestling as anything more then the Indy Circuit is well founded, and being part of it is not exactly helping one's legacy. To many fans it looks like an easier paycheck for the Scott Halls and Kurt Angles of the business. While I'm sure that your intentions are pure, 75% aren't. I'm a huge fan of yours Mick, and I'll be honest. I really don't like that you're in TNA, because to me it's WCW with a different name, and as big a fan of Mick Foley's that I am, I will never ever watch it, and as a fan who has stood in line for 5 hours just to get a glimpse of Mick Foley, my hero...I think that's saying something.

Mick, are you really that surprised that the media would portray pro wrestling or a pro wrestler in a negative light?? Next time you should just let Flair pick out your duds.

All I can say is this:The day that I got the chance to meet you at the Comic Convention in Rosemont was one of the greatest moments ever. Not just because you were famous, but because you kept it 100% real with me.We joked about how good Sandra Taylor looked. The point I'm making is that there are thousands (or more) of us that need people like you who have made it to that level of sucess that you have made it to and show us that it is okay to be who you want to be.I know the scope of the article is big because of the number of people who read S.I. are indeed in the millions, but brother.........and I hate to say this......but there are always going to be people that will try to bring you down. The only real thing you can do is to keep going forward.Don't let this break you down. You are a legend. Not because of wrestling.I've met many of wrestlers. It is because of who you are because when it is all said and done.....what else is there for you to do?

Your responce to SI is nicely written and (as we all know) you are a very talented writer. I haven't gotten the chance to read Mr. Duerson's full article, but from what I have heard about it, including your reaction and responce, you are right in everything you said :)

I have been a wrestling fan since as far back as I can remember, and now I am 26 years old. I have seen the way media has changed and thier perception on wrestling and how it has changed so much. I brought that up because a while back I wrote a myspace blog about how CNN completely contorted and twisted a interview they did with John Cena last november. An out of all things when I went to the sports illustrated website, I find that they are a CNN affiliate and to me (although I try to give the benefit of the doubt.) that turns my stomach because I have seen the way that CNN has treated wrestling in general. It's sad when someone who is supposed to be a respectable journalist or editor for that matter, twists the truth to where it possibly damages someones reputation.
All in all, we know what the truth is about the situation, and it is unfortunate that certian media places seem to have it out for wrestlers and the wrestling genre in general. Or choose to butcher something that could have been a wonderful article if they had like you said chosen to examine the emotional connection instead of what he did. You definately have a way with words Mick :)

Having followed yous career as I have and also reading your autobiographies it definitely seems like Duerson was intentionally misleading SI readers by painting a false image of you. The idiot obviously thought what he was doing was beneficial to the article and his career but like you pointed out he missed the real story. By the way, kudos to you for not only taking a stand on this matter but for also not allowing yourself to take that wrong turn in your career like so many other wrestling legends have done. You should definitely be an inspiration to the younger talent. Take care Mick.

hey mick the heck with what some idiot thinks or writes.the real folks who know you (and the rest of the wrestlers) respect you and your abilities as a wrestler,a author,a film critic, and most of all a human being.....all those morons do is siting in there big office with others reading the articles that have never done half as much as you....when did they ever go over seas to try to pick up the spirits of the u.s. troops...they didnt they are also the ones who several years ago that stated wrestling was a fake....yes it might be in some ways but wrestlers are some of the best atheletes in the world what baseball, football, tennis, player works 300 days a year and sometimes multiple times a day after flying 100s of miles....then people at s.i. and most film critics and athelets now a days arent anything compared to you.so hold your head high as only you could and dont let these idiots get your spirits down my friend.....you are the greatest person to ever live
