Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, November 07, 2007

By now you may have heard that The Office has shut down production.  This is true.  They cleaned out my trailer and just delivered me 3 boxes of my stuff.  It is pretty surreal.  We cannot produce new episodes of The Office until the Writer's Guild strike is over.

You might be confused about the issues of the strike and I'm hoping that this blog can make it a bit clearer.  (I should probably tell you that I support my head writer/producer Greg Daniels and the writing staff of The Office in their decision to strike.)

The big issue in this negotiation involves the internet.   If you go to NBC.com right now, you can watch an episode The Office for free.  The network runs advertisements while you're watching it, which gives them an extra source of revenue.  The actors, writers, producers and director, the people who created the content you are watching, are not compensated in any way for this.

The Writer's Guild has taken the position that the writers should receive residuals if the show re-airs on the internet just like they receive residuals if it re-airs on television since in both cases the studios are making money.  The issue is a huge deal, because the internet is clearly where the future of entertainment lies.

Right now, a number of successful shows (like Lost for one) have stopped showing repeat episodes on TV at all, and have replaced them with ad-supported streaming video on their websites.  If you're a Lost writer, or actor, or director, or a teamster that's no residuals at all for that show, and that's a big pay cut.  We all count on the extra income that residuals provide as it can help us through a slump in our career when we aren't working as regularly.  It is our safety net.  In 10 years I may need those residual checks to cover my electric bill.  You never know.  Hollywood is a fickle town.  If in 10 years, everything is rerun on the internet, the current union contracts say the studios don't have to pay us a dime.  And, I'll be sitting in the dark.

I hope that helped to explain things a little.  For more…

Here is a video of our awesome writers on the picket line.  They are funny even on strike:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=b6hqP0c0_gw

And you can also read James Gunn's blog on the subject which I thought was really great:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=58119776&blogID=325719700&Mytoken=48DA5041-E1D5-4563-86851B6E03CBFA22555321

Oh...there are only 2 unaired original episodes of The Office left.  And, I'm sad to say the one we were getting ready to shoot was going to be the funniest of the year.  I'm sure of it.  They've been pitching this particular story idea for over 2 years…it involves Pam and Jim being in Michael's home but that's all I'll say.  I hope we get to shoot it soon.  Let's all stay strong and hope that the strike can end soon.

Jenna, whatcha-mawanna-callit, there really is no excuse for this! Does it all really come down to money? I really need new Office episodes. See what you can do about convincing them to do a couple more, on the sly of course. Just kidding, I suppose I could take up Thursday night bowling and join a league. I am pretty good at making strikes too. Peace, Jason

Sorry about the blog dicking- but I have to ask... will the Writer's Guild include other industry workers when negotiating with executives? Sure, actors and costume designers and sound guys- everyone that goes into making these shows deserves that extra bit. Will the writers remember that, or is the Guild really just in it for the writers sake? Will they include clauses about intellectual property and allow writers to decide where their work goes? Currently, both the production companies and the Writers Guild have control over a writer's product, since they all think writers aren't responsible enough to keep track of their own work. I've been following this story on NPR for a few days. I'm a career journalist and my pay is never guaranteed. It's my hope that if this situation can be resolved it will put a feather in the hat of writers everywhere. There's a lot that goes into producing quality entertainment, no matter what genre. I wish you and your colleagues all the best.

Good luck, Jenna!

The Writers Guild only negotiates for writers. However, they are the first union contract to be up with the studios. The Actor's Guild contract is up in June 2008 and you can bet we will be fighting for the same residuals. It is important to support the writer's strike because the results of this strike will trickle down to the other union contracts...just like how a court ruling effects future rulings.

You are right, and even though I was nearly heart broken when I first heard about the strike realizing that your show would stop filming...I understood what they are fighting for is very important. You and the rest of the cast seem to really love and appreciate your writers and it shows. I support them 110% even if I have to turn off my television. You should get to work on the release of a new, " Barbie Party Massacre. " Angela could play Barbie.

I don't think that writers have the legal right to discuss any other agreements, as they have their own respective unions to mediate for them. Which is probably why they're not budging in so far. If the writers think they deserve a bigger piece of residual pie, and they do, then the actors, directors, production, and the caterers will too.. and they do as well... all right maybe not the caterers. And in the end, the studios will have to get paid less.

For those DVDs you bought, the studios get paid anywhere from $19.99 to $59.99 -- depending on what you bought.

But the writers get just 4 cents.

And what they're asking for is 8 cents... which seems pretty reasonable to me.; I'd pay that to the writers of The Office for writing such a great show.

You're not serious. You can't be. My brain can't even wrap around that. The writers don't owe us their dedication other than to write things we will love to watch. That's it. We're not friends or family. They do a job. I enjoy the job they do. They should be paid fairly for what they do, just like you would want to be paid for what you do. They're not writing FOR ME. They're writing because that's what they love. I'm sure they hope I'll enjoy it so they can actually make money doing what they love. Isn't that everyones dream? But it's not personal, nor does it require dedication to me on their part. So it will suck, seriously suck, when I can't watch my favorite shows. But it's t.v... We'll all be fine. And I assume the writers don't have any un-realistic expectations of me either. Though I would be more than willing to let the writers crash on my couch should the need arrise! And if they insist on bringing the cast of The Office over for a slumber party I will do my part to support their cause by buying jello, wine and twister. Oh, and my other part... by being right here when they start writing again.

Thanks for explaining--it helps to hear it from someone who knows the details firsthand and not just people bitching on the news. Why does the news only show people bitching?

I will miss The Office too much. I hope you still get comensated if the show's not in production--that would suck if everyone was punished for the writer's strike! :-/

i need my office and i don't want scrubs to end right in the middle of the final season. that would suck to stick with that show for all these years and get short changed like that.

i hope the networks give the writers what they deserve so we can all move on.

James' blog was one of the first things I read about the strike. It helped me to better understand the writer's POV.

They deserve to be compensated for the work they do, regardless of the platform it's shown on! You guys have been so great supporting the WGA. While I may be impaitent for the Office's return, I know it's for a good reason. I hope the hollywood bigwigs can realize they're biting the hands that feed them, and realize it soon.

While I highly doubt you'll ever be eating ramen noodles, I just made United Hollywood my top friend before I read your post, which did help explain it really well. Having worked in L.A. for ten years before moving to Portland, Oregon last year, I fully support what the writers are doing. I write a daily internet show and am not a member of the WGA, but would definitely be walking the picket line - albeit alone - here in PDX. I happened to read James' blog on the issue yesterday and it was great, too. Hang in there!
