Have you heard this name, Lori McKenna? If you haven't, you really need to go find yourself some of her music. She is an incredibly talented songwriter, and she's not too bad at the singing thing either. She's had some big cuts by Faith Hill (Fireflies, Stealing Kisses, and If You Ask), Sara Evans (Bible Song), and Tim McGraw (I'm Working). You've probably heard one or two of those songs as well. The lady is just
wonderful.
The reason I bring her up, though, is not just because you should all be listening to her music (you should!) but because I'm stealing an idea from her (one of those ideas that can't be copyrighted... I don't think... *smiles sheepishly*).
She released an album in 2004 called
The Kitchen Tapes. Each song on that record was recorded sitting at her kitchen table with a minidisc recorder and a pocket mic. And you know what? It sounds incredible. It's raw, of course. Not every guitar string is perfectly tuned. She doesn't always hit that high note perfectly. That's the beauty of it. It's real music made by a real person in a real kitchen, and it's truly worth listening to.
I've been wanting to record a demo for ages and ages now. I've been waiting for the studio thing to happen here at school, and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of working with no money and someone else's schedule. So, I'm taking a cue from Lori, and I am going to put together my first official (to me!) project, in my dorm room, with a logitech pc mic that cost me $30. It won't be perfect. That's not the point.
I'll keep you updated as I make progress. I don't know what I'll call it yet, but it's gonna be good.
