I'm not sure how many of you are aware, but NBC is revising the beloved television series, American Gladiator this year. They are currently touring the country holding tryouts and have held a couple sessions at the Gold's Gym in Venice, CA. This past weekend, five friends and I ventured down to Venice for the tryouts. We figured if nothing else, Gold's Gym, the mecca of bodybuilding, would provide some entertaining people watching. The tryouts consisted of the following - I'm not sure it would even be a warm-up in CrossFit class! This was the second set of tryouts at Gold's, so there was virtually no line at all. Like the nerd I am, I was the only one of our group that had filled out the 30 page application before arrival.Val asks questions about the application: Felicia seems confused by some of the questions. To her credit, they WERE some odd questions! I didn't get anyone to take photos of my tryout since they were all still filling out the applications. I ran through everything and was back before they even noticed. I don't know what my times were on parts two and three, but I did get 17 pullups in 30 seconds. The people at the auditions seemed a little startled at how boisterous our group was in cheering each other on and correcting each other's form. After a few of us mentioned CrossFit in our video interviews, they finally said, "What the heck is this CrossFit thing???"
They asked a lot of strange questions on the application and during the interview. We all got the sense they were looking for characters and stories more than just looks. I was asked what my gladiator name would be and to do my best gladiator pose. They didn't have us ever say whether we wanted to be a competitor or a gladiator, so I just went along with it and did a fighting pose and pretended to punch the camera. I didn't really think of myself as a gladiator - but then as I thought about it, it would be really fun to tackle people and compete on a regular basis! lol! My friend Val went through the physical tests after me. She recently won the gold medal in her weight division in the World Grappling Championship in Turkey. In other words, she kicks ass! Val running toward the light: Michael, also from my gym, kicking ass! 24 pullups in 30 seconds! And my friend, Felicia, from Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy - also a gold medalist at the World Grappling Championship! Who knows if any of us will get called back or chosen, but it was worth the drive down there and we had a lot of fun!
