[Claimer: Erykah Badu, The Roots and Common all feel that Hip Hop is a girl (H.E.R.)...I tend to disagree, it looks like a dude to me. {Austin Powers voice} Its A Maaaaan, Baaabaaay}]

This has been on my mind for a minute, and I'm sure I'm not the first or last to speak on this...but damn, where are the female rappers?

Yeah yeah yeah...I know that there are "some" out there in the most generic sense of the word, but really, where art thou? As a writer, I pay attention to who gets put on the cover of rap magazines. And um...I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a pretty face on one. I mean, Kimora Lee Simmons was on the cover of The Source this past month, but does that really count? Eve popped up in the current XXL, but she was the only female feature in there, and if my memory serves me correctly, she was the first female to be in there for a hot lil' minute.

I mean got damn, where are the girls at? Sure, yeah, we have women in the videos dancing and in the magazine posing, but where are the ones with something to say? You know, the ones with brains (not those kind, get your mind out the gutter). And yeah, I know we got people going crazy over this Lil Mama girl (I saw a freestlye of hers, she can really go), but can I get more than 1 or 2 at one time? Is that being selfish? Is that too much to ask? To see more that Lil Mama and Eve?

Granted, female rappers were never the bulk of the rap population, but damn, you at least had a couple options. I remember times when I was watching Rap City or YO! MTV Raps, seeing videos by Queen Latifah, MC Lyte and JJ Fad all in one sitting. There were other times when I could see Salt-N-Pepa, Bo$$ and Concious Daughters on the same show. Fast forward to a day where I'd see Rage, Da Brat and Dis N' Dat (thats Bass Music for those of yall who dont know) and fast forward again to a time where I'd see Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, Bahamadia and even Nonchalant at the same time. And the beautiful thing about this is that, I KNOW I left out hella names! Meaning there was even more to pick from or leave alone. Don't get me wrong, just like there were/are some wack as dudes rapping, there were/are some was ass females. All I'm saying is, its nice to have options.

Yes, I know there are about eh, 17 female rappers out there right now. I get Myspace friend requests and mixtapes from quite a few of them, I just dont care for the lot of them because all they rap about is taking my money or shoving my face in their special place...and I dont wanna hear that shit no more than women want to hear dudes tell them they gonna pimp them and tear their p***y up.

Damn, what was I saying....yeah, where are the options? I know people say that Hip Hop is mysogonistic and demeans women, but shied....I find the thought of no women being around period, more frieghtening than the thought of them being disrespected. If these gangstas aint careful, they gonna go from saying "fuck yall hoes" to "damn, where the hoes at?" {i use that term comedically and loosely, and it wasnt meant to offend or imply}.

Hip Hop is starting to remind me of those nights in the club where there aint NOOOOO females. Ya'll know what I'm talking about fellas. Hip Hip is looking like a Sword Fight, a Sausage Party, a Testosterone Tangle, a Hardleg Convention.

I mean, I don't know about ya'll...but when I was a kid, I wasnt one of those boys that said "ew, yucky" when a girl came around. Granted, I wasnt the perv looking up girls dress and grabbing ass everyday at P.E. and Recess, but I wasnt one of those "No Girls Allowed" treehouse ass niggas neither got dammit. But damn, thats what Hip Hop is looking like to me right now...dudes are not liking girls. What does that shit mean? I mean whats really going on?

And to the ladies, I ask? Did the fellas chase you out of the party? Or, while I'm sitting here complaining, hell, I might need to realize that sheid, maybe women dont want to rap anymore. Thats fair, because there are times when I don't want to listen to rap my damn self. So, if thats the case, thats completely understandable...I only wish that some of your male counterparts would take the same action and just, stop rapping...because just like Herby Luv Bug hinted on S&P's "Push It"...."It aint for everybody!"

I dunno man...Hip Hop needs some women dawg. Folks talking about Hip Hop is Dead or its dying...no it aint...its going through a dry spell...Hip Hop needs some pussy...thats all. I mean, look at how these dudes are acting. They slapping 14 year olds, having petty ass fights, recording diss videos in their boxers, walking around angry all the time and going to Oprah for help with communicating with the sistahs....yep {deep breath}, sounds like somebody needs some pussy...Dudes wont have time to be mad and all up on each other and in each others business if they're preoccupied with the opposite sex.

So yeah man....stop jacking off (ego masturbating) and go get some ass Hip Hop...I guarantee you'll feel better. But don't just run up in anything tho...quality over quantity. And if it aint with a woman you want having your kids, use a rubber...last thing we need is some more bastardized rappers running around...and I imagine that you dont want to catch nothing either...

your thoughts please...

(oh yeah, shout out to all the Female DJs putting it down out there)

are you sure you weren't a perv back then??
i digress...

anyway, i'm with you and was just having a convo about this last night on the plane with a music exec... i don't know. there just isn't a lot of diversity in hip hop these days anyway, and i guess gender-wise is no different. its unfortunate. maybe the women who are good rappers, who are rappin about something don't want to be a part of this industry... maybe they're looking for the underground connections that won't make them talk about the BS you referenced... i dunno, but i sho do miss em!

MC Lyte, Salt, and Yo-Yo all bash what hip hop currently is... i imagine other hot MCs don't want to play in the game as it currently stands... i hope we'll get thru the misogynistic sausage fest REAL SOON!

you have our backs, don't you Mr. GaHland?

very interesting blog sir gahland...yet again, you've managed to tap into what's crossing a lot of folks' minds...my editors always bitch about the same thing...as for me, i'll probably catch a lot of flack for my train of thought, but i've never particular been able to get into female rappers for the some of the reasons that you listed...for some reason, it has seemed very unnatural to me...as you pointed out, many of the lot of femcees rap about a dude giving them $$, then putting his mouth where his $$ is...then there are the tomboys of the bunch that rhyme about how they can hang w/ the big dawgs and grab their crotch and pop off with the best of 'em...as a female myself, i've personally never been able to identify with any female rapper...my goal in life is not to take a dude for his dough and while i can definitely appreciate a man that knows where to put his mouth, i for one prefer not to hear about it all day...and as a self-professed nerd who cringes @ the sight of a gun, i can't identify w/ the gun-toting, crotch-grabbing, drug selling chick...so where does that leave me? its bad enough that i can't relate to most of the things that male rappers talk about, but what do i do when i can't relate to the females either?

i'm rambling, so i'm not sure if what i'm saying is making any sense....but yeah...that's how i feel

i feel you though. Both of y'all...definitely some thought-provoking shid Maurice.

Even considering the great female MCs, it still seems like one has to have a hint of testosterone to truly pull the shid off. We've all heard the rumors persist about Lyte and Latifah for years. And if it's not the vibe, it's the voice. How many dude rappers or producers have we heard say they had to work with a certain female because "she rapped just like a dude."

Three 6 used to say it about Gangsta Boo. And despite the stalled careers of Lady of Rage and Rah Digga, would they have even made it as far as they did if they didn't sound like men?

of couse, Lauryn Hill defies all the rules. she was feminine and one of the baddest to touch the mic (male or female). its as if female rappers have the odds stacked against them the same way blacks in general did in the generation following Civil Rights. you know how our parents and g'parens used to always say, 'it ain't enough that you be good at what you do? you gotta be better than white folks, too.'

I think female rappers can be judged on their own merit, but like you said Reese, not if they keep using the same standards/topics men use. if a chick came out dissin the hell out of men for all the misogyny on some Oprah/Essence/Spelman gangsta shit, dudes would respect. But it's like a no-win situation. Cuz if a chick does have her head right, most of the time the last thing she's thinking about is rapping.

Maybe somebody should start ghostwriting for Oprah?

I WILL NOT LOSE!!! - WWW.MADNEWS.BIZ

Good post M.

The labels - they are not interested in signing/investing in female rappers and I don't think at this point in time the fans are interested in seeing/hearing female rappers. The skant few female rappers that are out there, all they seem to want to talk about is giving head and telling us how good their pussy's are (e.g. at one point Trina felt the need to tell the world on wax that her man even eats her when she is on her period...) Nobody wants to hear all that!!! The days when Lil Kim/Foxy discussed such raw subject matter and sold millions of records has long gone.

The females out there that want to rap need to realize that attempting to emulate Lil Kim/Foxy in 2007 isn't going to work in their favour. Shawnna, Remy Ma, Trina, Jacki O are all living proof that lurid tales of them opening their legs, and walking around with Gucci purses no longer generates hit records.

"if a chick came out dissin the hell out of men for all the misogyny on some Oprah/Essence/Spelman gangsta shit, dudes would respect".

Perhaps this is the way to go Scribe......

Lil Mama - the less said about her the better (smh). She needs to focus on her school work.

I agree with you Maurice, the game needs female rappers who can spit lyrics. They are out there but no one is trying to sign them. I got one artist who I'm pushing (Infamiss -- check my friends on myspace) and we are close to inking a deal but it is not easy. I'm being told everyting from females do not sell records to females can't rap. These are A&R's who suppose to have their pulse on the next best thing.

Check out Infamiss at myspace.com/infamiss1

So I got into an argument down at Backstage Music about 3 months ago about this particular topic... And of course I was the only femaile in there. Apparently, what I heard from the fellas is that as disgusted as they are with female rappers that talk about nothing but how good their nookie is and what they want you to do to their necks and backs, NOOOOOOO man wants to listen to a full album of females like Shawnna or Rah Digga either. They're pretty, but too hard (too opinionated maybe?)
So yea, Maurice, you're right: Hip-Hop is a dude. Cuz y'all have the same reaction when it comes to dating. You don't want the half-nekked, gold-diggin' video vixen wanna be who's in the club e'y night tryna catch a baller. But the career minded, no bulls**t takin' females get the least love of all!

yep, peezy, you're right. hip hop is a man... a GAY man.

that's why it hates on women so much. hip hop will come up with millions of reasons why female rappers are wack, but at the end of the day, even the best female rapper will never have what it really wants...another penis.

the fact that men would rather sit around watching 50 Cent and Cam'ron dance around in videos all day, or listen to Jim Jones or Jeezy yell and grunt on a track as opposed to bumping or watching say, Lauryn Hill, Mystic or Jean Grae (all attractive women) is GAY. As. Hell.

hip hop just needs to come out the closet and be done with it.

i know! maybe if i dressed in drag i'd do jay-z numbers.

anyways. if you ever get curious about going the other way, buy my new album: the other side of the game part 2: good business.....or visit me at: myspace.com/jboogie404.

I agree...I'd LOVE to see more female rappers (I meant HEAR..hahaha). But for real...I think it's possible if one came with the right, bonafide HIT song. It can be a club song or whatever...it's just gotta be a SMASH HIT!! If people go out and buy the hell out of the record, and the female artist follow up with a few more bangers and a hot album, she'll be a success story, right?

Many label execs are mere copy cats. Whatever is "hot" at the time, they'll jump all on it to duplicate it and try to find the "next femcee". Before we know it, the game will be swarming with female rappers. That's what I believed happened back in the day. It's only logic.

Plus, I feel the old female formula of making "answer" records could also be a viable option too...especially with the mixtape game being as powerful as it is. Think "Showstopper" (S-n-P), "The Real Roxanne", etc..

Anyways, good post and we DEFINITELY need to get some ladies up in this muafugga...

Standing ovation...strangey, strangey! I think a lot of 'popular' (read successful) female rappers have chosen to make the real dinero by pursuing singing, acting or lets raise a family gigs...Honestly, do you think the Queen, ahem, I mean Dana Owens made more money when she was at the top of her game rappin' or in recent years as a bonafide actress?? Yet, you see Will Smith (yes, he should really stick to acting), and LL COOL J who can drop an album & nobody thinks anything of it...

To me, unfortunately, its the same old same old...Try being in upper management at some top corporate gig and get BACK on top after having a baby - its basically the same BS, sad, but true...Good observation though :D.

What Hip Hop needs is less drugs. That would solve the homo-thuggery that exists behind the backdoor. Nullus. T-Pain and Beanie both got exposed this week for being over the rainbow when it comes to inebriated gay theory.

I think Hip-Hop needs a woman who's sexy without trying, but not ignoring the fact that she's sexy, either.

It needs a woman or female group that drops albums & mixtapes in the same year, and can guest feature on anything. Missy had us fooled for a long time, and is she really sexy? REALLY?

It also needs a woman who isn't a slave to expectations of feminism, materialism, sex, and the hyper-intelligence of Lauryn Hill. That's really been the standard for any female who wants to change the game in Hip-Hop, and not even she could live up to her own plateau without falling way back.

But yes. Hip-Hop needs some pussy. The whole world does. Excluding women from the game is the gayest thing we could do, and that's where we are right now in rap. Dammitman.

Man me & u both know what happen to tha quality women who had something to say. Tha labels said to them, "Look you need to make a song talkin about giving head and being a gold digger."
I'm still waiting to hear something new from Mia X & get an album from Chyna White. Ghetto Twinz used to go hard back in tha day too.
But you brought back some memories when you listed, Dis n Dat, Bahamadia, Conscious Daughters. And seriously, what happened to Bo$$. I did an interview with Pimp C bout a year ago and he said he was gonna bring her back out. I'm still waiting.
