The Consequences The Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage did not just overturn the will of California voters; it also redefined marriage for the rest of society, without ever asking the people themselves to accept this decision. This decision has far-reaching consequences. For example, because public schools are already required to teach the role of marriage in society as part of the curriculum, schools will now be required to teach students that gay marriage is the same as traditional marriage, starting with kindergarteners. By saying that a marriage is between “any two persons” rather than between a man and a woman, the Court decision has opened the door to any kind of “marriage.” This undermines the value of marriage altogether at a time when we should be restoring marriage, not undermining it. The Solution Vote YES on Proposition 8 to overturn the outrageous Supreme Court decision and restore the definition of marriage that was approved by over 61% of voters. Proposition 8 is NOT an attack on gay couples and does not take away the rights that same-sex couples already have under California’s domestic partner law. 	Electric Ladyland	Just for the record, I really don’t have much of a problem with socialism... ...but Barack Obama is not a socialist. Guess what America? We use socialism all the time, even in a capitalist society. Medicare, Social Security, Taxes = SOCIALISM. Not to mention Unemployment, Financial Aid, Disability, etc. We are a Capitalist society, but BOTH sides constantly use Socialism to bail out Capitalism when it fails. Taxation is supposed to redistribute the wealth, no? Obama supports tax breaks for the lower middle class and McCain supports tax breaks for wealthier people. Either way, it is SOCIALISM. It is not pure, true socialism, but it is still part of it. Republicans, especially McCain and Palin use it just as the Democrats do. They pretend they don't, and people buy it because many people don't even realize what Socialism really is. Besides, I like many socialist ideals. To me, if Obama really was a socialist (and he's not - he's a Democrat - there is a difference) that would make me like him even more. Not that Socialism in its purest form works, but neither does Capitalism. 	angel	It would be a logical assumption that because we know that pure socialism doesn't work neither will pure capitalism. And we are learning that as capitalism has grown. Everything is about balance, and there are more than just the one flaw - that just happens to be the flaw getting attention at the moment. To assert the rule of law is the problem I guess you are talking about regulation to make sure people follow the rules. The main reason pure capitalism will not work is the lack of equal opportunity. With pure capitalism only those fortunate enough to be born into opportunity will benefit from it. What happeed to "survival of the fittest" that the republicans have always used as justification for their extreme wealth? 	angel	To earn my bachelor's in business/major in accounting I was required to take additional classes in economics, and along with 15 years of work as a controller my understanding of economics is far above basic. I was also required to take advanced classes in law, which I aced - graduated with an overall gpa of 3.7 - point being, I have a full and complete understanding of economics, business and law. The theories of "Equal Opportunity" and "survival of the fittest" are more widely addressed in biology, sociology, psychology and philosophy; the latter term is applied in economics in reference to competition and is often criticized because it does not factor in morality. The lack of equal opportunity is one of many reasons why our society is a mix of both socialism and capitalism. Another is inherent greed. You will learn the many reasons, they are not mine, in "sociology", "psychology", "biology" and "philosophy" for dummies. I won't take the time to explain it here - you'll have to learn it on your own. I say logical assumption because the 2 theories are at completely different ends of the spectrum. To put it simply, one implies everyone working together for the common good, the other implies every man for himself. They are 2 different things - complete opposites. But just as socialism can go too far left, capitalism can go too far right. 2 different things that have a direct impact on each other. That is what I meant by balance - since one directly affects the other you have to find a common ground. What we do know is that species that work together survive; those that work against each other die out. As for "the law of the jungle" we live in a civilized society. We have the ability to think, rationalize, feel and make decisions with good information.
