Peace peoples:

As always I hope this find you in good health and spirits.  As many of you know and many of you who do not,  I shot a TV show for VH1 called "Ego Trips: The White Rapper Show".  The premise is that we take ten white MC's and put them in the South Bronx and teach them about Hip Hop.  Due to contracts that hold up my paper I cannot tell you anything more except that there is an intersting thing I have discovered.  The White Rapper experience.  Many of you may not be familiar with this but I can speak from first hand knowledge that it is very interesting.  The premise of being a white rapper has gotten so white washed.  I met white rappers, and please do not be afraid for what I am about to tell you, but I have talked to and dealt with white rappers who have...ready...NEVER PERFROMED IN FRONT OF BLACK PEOPLE!!!!.   How is this possible?  Are the black people so hard to find for white rappers?  Are white rappers not going to black people to seek thier approval.  HOW CAN WHITE RAPPER BE WHITE RAPPERS IF BLACK PEOPLE HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM RAP.  Here is a message for many of you that might have grown up on hip hop being an over satruated image driven music that dominates the charts and the screens.  Hip Hop cuture is Black culture....period.  You can take the hood out of Hip Hop but you can't take the Hip Hop out the hood.  I would like to make a statement to all those white rappers who read this or those who have to tolerate a white rapper when they come around.  A white rapper cannot be considered a white rapper until he rips in front of a crowd of black people.  I am not saying they all have to be black.  You can have some spanish, some multi-racial kids mixed in there for flavor, I would even say Asain people.  But if you are a white rapper that performs in front of a white crowd then you are not a rapper at all.  You are a guy who is simulating what it feels like to rock a crowd.  And I might go as far as to say that even if an all white crowd shows love to a white rapper and there is no black peole in that crowd, he did not rock that crowd.  White people will usually applaud anyone who has the balls to step on stage.  I have seen tremendously wack rappers get in front of white people and becasue they heard a few words that rhymed, gave them love.  To be a white rapper you must rip in front of a black person so hard that the black person leaves the show and says "That White boy ripped that shit!"  Now you are a white rapper.  You have gooten approval from the people that started and built this culture.  As much as I love my lack of melanin brothers and sisters, you cannot claim what you do not own.  I can remember many a day that the only white face I saw at a party was mine or my reflection.  And this has nothing to do with how I came up and in what era.  Em did the same thing in Detroit.  We seeked out black audiences.  We looked for them to respect us and acknowlege us as rappers, as MC's.  Non Phixion is in this group as well as Everlast and a host of others (Paul Wall get a shout out here too).

Some of this, well most of this as I am sure you know is toungue and cheek but lets be real.  If a borther or sister don't give you the thumbs up, then you are faking the funk on way too many levels and its time you went back to wall street or college or the bowling alley or the Klan meeting.  White Rappers, dont call your self white rappers until a black person calls you it first.  And trust me when a black crowd shows you love, you rise above all other white rapper into the sphere of being just a plain old rapper.  And probably a great one at that.

Be sure to watch my TV show Ego Trips:  The White Rapper Show airing Monday night at 10pm starting in January on VH1

LONG LIVE THE WHITE RAPPER

I have much love for Serch and his words but I will play the Devil's Advocate here and disagree. In order to understand this theory you must apply it to all aspects of Music, Cultures, Life in general. It was said that Music is Universal. HipHop is music and no matter who you perform in front of. It sounds a little racist to me that you need to get the approval of a race to legitimatly became accepted to perform "their music". Maybe you do??? Why do you have to classify "White Rappers"? I am sure the answer everyone will post is "Because thats the way it is". That answer is a bunch of bullshit. Why is the name of the show "The White Rapper"??? That is just as racist. HipHop is love through and through. Love for the community, the history, the people (because there are a shit load of white people that live the in projects too. These people are called Trailer Trash.). Again I have much love for you Michael as a person and a rapper but you have always said in your lyrics, to some degree that you only date african american women. That sounds a little racist to me. To pretch love you must embrass all people and there faults. I am sure this falls on def ears as everyone that posts to you just want to be and know "MC SERCH" but to be real and make your point valid you must hear both sides.

Peace, Much Love and continued success in everything you do brother.

im stalkin u larry...lol

Ok since Larry posted in both so will I hahahah.

who tol du to post this blog 5 times mister ?

first post:

(does a cocky walk) as I recall someone saying that to me last month...

Now maybe it made me cocky to hear " that white girl killed it" from the crowd at pyramid...but maybe thats because I dont know any white female rappers that kill it period...none the less for the real hip hop community while keeping her clothes on. ~cough

U are so very right about what you said, I honestly am rarely the slightest bit affected when a white person tells me Im the shit. I look at them like " do u know what the shit really is ?"

omg did anyone see that movie white boys *faints* Classic example of what Serch is saying. It was painful to watch because its true. This artform has been bootlegged, revamped and dare I say...laid down over casio keyboard beats and called rap.

Imitation is only the greatest form of flattery when its done correctly. Alot of ppl are just disrepectful. Just because you can ryme some words, it does not mean you are a rapper. you must finesse these words and hold them like they are your first born and lay them down on fine egyptian cotton beats and only when they are the thing you are most proud of in this universe should they be shown to the world..

Myspace is a prime example of wanna be rappers. But it still stands that when a black person is wack they are just that, wack...When a white person is wack it is seen as a failed attempt at "acting black" and you are an asshole for even attempting to rap.

Ive recently gotten over my stage fright which I now realize was validation fright. Serch is right, if a black crowd aint feeling you, your assed out. I guess I was afriad that they werent going to think I was as hot as I thought I was...Shiiiit Im over that now LOL

U got boy, Good luck with the show I hope its a great success.

Second post:

Funny thing is I dont consider myself a white rapper, never have. Im a hot ass rapper. Shit I dont even consider myself a female rapper...I'll lace a dude real quick. But it still remains that even when I see white person take the stage I think its time to hit the bar or take a bathroom break. And truth be told, im rarely impressed. As an openminded person I can understand how it would be hard for you to own up to the fact that this is the reality of  hip hop. Yes Music is universal but Rap/Hip hop stems from black culture. And dont think for one minute if a wack white rapper hits the stage that the black crowd is not going to blame it on him being white and take offense to his attempt at imitating black culture.  When a new black rapper hits the scene noone is shocked that he is hot, but when a white rapper hits the scene everyone prepares to critique him before he even opens his mouth. And only when he proves he is hot does everyone respect him, yet he is and always will be referred to as " the white rapper". Im sure the show dabbled in the seriousness and comedic side of white rappers in hip hop, hense the name...To attract attention. I mean, who isnt gonna tune in. And you know why, not because they love hip hop but because they think its gonna be funny. I for one am looking forward to seeing it...

It takes hard work to color blind a color driven industry. Hip hop wants support from the blacks and sales from the whites. I myslef am gonna do my shows in the dark. When im done, you tell me what color you think I am.

Im a new breed of emcee, Im not only gender blinding but I am also color blinding.

If your group was
manufactured by someone who wanted to put two white rappers together
and hopefully exploit the race situation..

Much love to all of your contributions from the late 80's, early 90s. However this issue of race in all facets of our society are not here for exploitation. If you have a problem with race, maybe use a different vehicle to express your displeasure of racial/societal identity; does this issue need to be presented on the same television channel that exploits FlavaFlav(which is funny because everyone knows him as the 'crazy' dude who is trying to get with 30 women at once while humiliating them in the process, instead of the cocaine sniffing radical member of Public Enemy who bettered race relations in America by not standing down to white authority in order to show suburbia and other classes of little multiracial exposure how racism was and still is impacting American society). I think your motivations for pursuing a television show that presents race as an unconcious hinderance instead of a show that searches for true skills regardless of background should be questioned. Your legacy allows me to adopt a 'benefit of the doubt' mentality when I consider all of this, however I expect more than a VH1 expose from someone who has been in the game this long. Try putting some energies into making some more tracks, hell if MF DOOM is still killing it. I won't watch your show but will be awaiting a new release from your music. Sincerely, Existence76

Why is it when the issue of race comes up, people can't help being retarded? In his misguided tangent, serch did hit on a point, but not for the reasons he stated.

You furthered this point in your post, and had some well placed thoughts.

To be good at your trade you have to challenge yourself, and constantly be trying to get better. You have to expose yourself and your works to people who, not only are willing to be critical, but are going to be legitimate and well informed in their criticisms. That's a far cry from saying that to be a rapper you have to perform in front of black people. Anyone serious in their like of hip-hop (white or black) is going to listen to whatever they can find that's out there and learn. If a person were really trying to get better at rapping, I don't really see how they wouldn't find themself in front of a mostly black crowd at one point, but that's another issue.

"In his reply to Serch, Sage Francis sounds like an offended white MC who’s protecting his right to take Black culture and turn it into what he wants it to be – and how dare Serch challenge that?!?!?!?

I'd say he sounded like someone miffed that another person was putting arbitrary labels on what he does. Especially when you have stupid shit like "
I am not saying they all have to be black.  You can have some spanish, some multi-racial kids mixed in there for flavor, I would even say Asain people." I don't think you can really succesfully take a culture and turn it into what you want unless you capture the people too.  If you take ideas from a culture, and turn it into something else without those people along with it, it's not that culture anymore. Nobody can "steal" culture, because people define culture. If you try to pass it off as that people's culture, they're going to reject it if they don't like it.

I also don't think anyone is trying to obscure, or pretend that hip-hop doesn't have its roots in black culture. Since they're not trying to obscure it, and they're not claiming to BE IT, I don't really get what the issue is.

"Let’s be clear, in American nothing is sacred but the almighty dollar and white rights to everything – and Black culture has always been for sale to the highest bidder. Sage Francis WILL be legitimized as a “rapper” in white eyes simply (and ironically) because he’s white. However, Sage Francis, MCA, Serch and even Eminem will probably never be the archetype of an MC/Rapper for the Ghetto-Dwelling, Block-Hugging Urban Souljahs from which the art springs."

I'd say it's never really been about white rights for everyone and more about the rich having every door open to them, but that's also another matter entirely. I'd infer that Urban Souljahs will always define their own archetypes for rappers. The same way I'll decide who a good rapper is for myself. Regardless of whether they've been in front of zero black crowds or a thousand. I don't need someone else to decide for me who is legitimate or who has talent.

So if i get 'the thumbs up' from some Steve Urkell type...is that cool? does that make me down?

What the fuck are u talkin about?.. you sound crazy & desperate for some sort of publicity for your new sell out of a tv show. What a stupid premise...

This is very true Serch. Now in the myspace era, I have come accross many white rappers from the suburbs. Hearing their stuff, Im like, alright, but how would this person do at club Speed?

Being a white rapper from the 90s era, I know exactly what it's like to get on stage in Harlem and get laughed at. But then the beat drops. Then the lyrics, and suddenly you're getting the most love out of anybody. I say to myself, here's my shot to prove I'm not just another dadundun whiteboy trying to be black. I'm Irish and proud to be that shit! Its more about, us white rappers,  how much do we really love this culture? How long have you been doing this? Have you ever heard of Ed OG and the Bulldogs, or even Gas Face for that matter? You can be Samoan slash Hindu and if you got that fire you got that fire! Stand up and say "Fuck these people! I love this shit!" From there you can never go wrong....

Peace Serch

Dude, how old are you? You really still workin' on bein' white?

OK, how about this...

I saw your first video when I was locked up in L.A. at 13 and fought a mess of Crips for laughing at you. Yeah, Serch. You did not play well that day in my unit, whitey. I took up your slack that day.. You didn't look too fucking accepted, approved and super black that day to me player. Those black guys thought you were a fucking clown. I'm not so sure they had you wrong now that I think about it.

Anyway...relax. It's just art and culture. Don't get dogmatic about art and culture. Sports teams maybe. Politics maybe, fuck it...religion even, but this shit is corny. C'mon, man.

I'd love to say you blazed a trail for me, but you didn't. You caused static for me, so put that in your mama and pull you out.

i kinda agree with what youre saying cuz when i first started rapping about 8 years ago i rapped in front of white kids you know and they all cheered but then when i did it in front of my black friends they laughed callin me whack but i see where ur comin from on that but its all a matter of your ability if your a white rapper i mean almost any white guy can "rip" it in front of 2 white kids but if ur in a crowd of like 20 white kids then somes not gonna like it but i feel that black kids are more straight forward about hip hop culture if somethins good or not

but yeah cant wait for the show i read about it in the rolling stone mag

long live REAL hip hop

p.s:how do you feel about all this new southern rap bullshit like snap music and all? really i think its ruining the culture

peace

Yo' Search, wtf!?  You KNOW John Brown didn't win because you guys didn't like him, he was better than Shamrock.  Sham needs to workout so he can breathe through those long verses....  John should have won.
