"Completely, 100% E-Page." Oh yeah! I'm honored.

FRIEND REQUESTS: I has 'em. And will approve all soon.

I miss you.

I'm going to London for the BAFTAs! If anyone can think of anything really touristy I ought to do in Merrie Olde England, please post below. The more touristy, the better. No stimulating hipster diversions, please. I'll save those for my next trip. This time, I'm keeping it strictly on the Clark Griswold tip.

Well, of course you have to have actual English fish and chips while you're there, and you double of course also have to do the Abbey Road thing at the crosswalk, especially if you're going with an entourage. Your decision whether you're John, Paul, George or Ringo.

Pip pip and all of that!

I swear this may have been obvious to everyone else but me...but did you know that Big Ben is the sound at the beginning of "Hells Bells" by AC/DC?

I did not.

So when I came out of the Tube station and heard it, I had to start singing. Rolling thunder, pouring rain. Yes, loudly, yes all of it. Sadly, there were no video cameras available.

You, however, can go make your own fun. Have a rock show! Do it. You know you want to start rocking out at the House of Parliament.

Also, go to Camden. Best outdoor markets ever, and the best place to skeevy people watch. You can get Docs on the street for about $40, and I need not explain how sweet this deal is. Hang onto your bags though - there are pickpockets everywhere.

Diablo, three fantastic things to do.

1. Walking tours on Friday and Saturday night of all the places Jack the Ripper struck. This is really fun at night.

2. Walking tour of The Beatles, Apple headquarters, Abby Road, Rooftop from Let it Be.

3. Portobello Road Flee markets on Saturdays. Tons and tons of fantastic booths, antiques, food, fun fun fun!

Any concierge can help you with the walking tours. The company that holds them puts out a monthly calendar. They're very inexpensive and about 25-75 people go on each one.

If you have the time, hire a car and go to Stonhedge and on the way back stop at Bathe. This is about 6-8 hour excursion but really really worth it.

Hope that helps.

Congrats once again!

Windsor Castle was one of my favorites.

Bus route 139 goes right past Abbey Road Studios. If you're standing in front, looking at the recording studio, the crosswalk is to your right.

You must go see Big Ben. And hear it chime.

Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral.

Of course, tea.

And fish and chips in a pub. (It's funny, it's the same fish and fries we get here, but for some reason, they taste so much better in London.)

And if you are at all a chocolate fan, you MUST MUST MUST go to Thornton's. There's a shop on Oxford Street. They have the best chocolate. And it's pretty reasonable price wise.

Both times I've been in London, I've had dinner at Maxwell's in Covent Garden. Both meals have been very good.

Can I come with? I miss London.

Clark and crew would do all the usual stuff - London Tower (take pics of yourself with the Beefeaters), Buckingham Palace, Westminster. - But honestly, I suggest you start by taking the Hop-on-the-Double-Decker-Tours (can't think of the actual name) but, seriously, the best touristy bang for your pound. You can get off and on as you want. It'll show you all the sites and save your feet for the places you really want to go to. It kinda gets you pumped up and helps you decide what you really want to see more up-close. I've employed this same theory with my family quiet successfully for Manhattan trips. Always do the Circle Line. 3hr tour. No fuss. - For some downtime to hang with the locals BUT STILL BE TOURISTY, try Hyde Park, weather and tolerance permitting. It's where the pretty and the crazies mingle in a public forum. - You can't leave London without having some Indian food. Seriously. They'll ask for stool samples at Heathrow. It's an obsession. Every cabbie, homeless guy, and concierge will have an opinion. If you find yourself around Leicester late one night, try Akash. Seriously. I don't even like Indian and that place has stayed with me for years. - Oh, and though I'm sure you have 1,000 other people volunteering, I'm willing to travel *laugh* I remote work. They won't even notice ;) - - Have a great time!

Besides stuff that has been said like Clink Prison, Ripper tours, Abby Road, Etc.
Why not check out the filming locations to American Werewolf in London. Imdb has a decent page on it http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082010/locations and my friend Paul is doing a Landis approved documentary on it and would probably know the exact locations http://www.myspace.com/kesslerboy . I'm sick so I can't think of any other London centric films right now.

London:
Westminster Abbey
St Paul's Church designed by Christopher Wren
Tate Modern Museum of Art
Victoria & Museum - the apogee of Victoriana & the vanished empire
National Theatre - classic theatre at its best
Royal Court Theatre - the avant garde with a leftish tinge
Claridge's Hotel - the hangout of the real Brit upper class. Last show biz guest - Fred Astaire 9rode up in the elevator with him & his daughter). Go for tea or lunch or to the bar.
Harrod's dept store owned by the father of Diana's late lover. If you like classy shopping
Houses of Parliament

Just outside London:
Windsor Castle
Stratford on Avon - the Royal Shakespeare Theatre
Oxford University - never on a tour bus. Get a custom, chauffeured tour by an unemployed Oxford don. Surprisingly cheap.

For London, see if the London Dungeon is still in business, I think it's close to the Museum of the Moving Image. It's a museum devoted to all the ways people have died in history, plague, torture instruments, murder, all kinds of fun stuff.

If you like Sherlock Holmes, the SH Museum is on Baker Street, and I enjoyed it, although fellow SH fans seem to consider it too "touristy."

Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column is obligatory, and everyone in the world has to get a picture taken on one of the lions at the base of the Column. I was alone in London, so my lion pic is of an unridden lion.

Picadilly Circus and the West End is tacky with neon marquees and that big electronic billboard. It reminded me of home in tacky Myrtle Beach, so I ended every night there, and thus avoided homesickness.

Carnaby Street, also in London and the birthplace of punk, is now a complete tourist trap, so go crazy with t-shirts and sweatshirts and junk.

Stonehenge is cool and touristy, and you can check out a cathedral, and an assload of attractive women in nearby Salisbury.

Stratford on Avon has Shakespeare stuff and if you see a Royal Shakespeare Company show there, David Tennent and Patrick Stewart are doing stays there. Check the dates.

I may think of more.

Oh, and bring me back a sonic screwdriver.

Coolest London thing I've done is go up to the top of Big Ben at noon but that had to be pre-arranged throught the American Consolate and was before 9/11. Westminster Abbey is popular but St. Paul's Cathedral is breathtaking. The Tower and Crown Jewels are as touristy as it comes but would not be as fun as the Abbey Road or walking tours. Changing of the guard , Hyde Park, depends on your free time, weather and energy. Use the consierge for timing of events. Have fun and dress warm!

obviously there's the tower of london and the houses of parliament but i you want to do something that screams "TOURIST!" then take your picture in front of a double decker buss and make it really obvious what you are doing.

also, try to distract the royal guards at Buckingham palace.

Jaywalking isn't a crime here, so cross as many busy streets as you can, as and when you please! Vehicles in London won't slow down, they'll just honk with vigour.

Take an open-top double decker bus tour. Expensive but a hoot.

Collect a bunch of hooker advert postcards from phonebooths. There are dozens in each. A full menu.

Marvel at our high prices. On everything.

Visit Harrods -- officially the Queen's favourite shop. Don't buy anything though, it's too expensive.

Visit Madame Tussaud's wax museum to get photos of you groping celebrities.

Ooh, dude who said "vigour"--that's hot. Madame Tussaud's does seem like the most Clark Griswoldy thing to do--or, like I did last time I was in London, fall a-jetlagged-sleep on the shoulder of some other tourist on a double-decker bus that's taking you who cares where as long as you can sleep, sweet sleep.

If it's art you want to see go to the National Gallery, the Tate Modern, or the Tate Britain. All of them are amazing. The National has a good mix of things and is enormous, and if I ever get back to London I'm spending a week just looking around in there. The Tate Modern has lots of crazy-weird stuff, and has an amazing gift shop full of art books. And the Tate Britain is a little more traditional, but if you (or anyone reading this comment) are interested in British landscape painters like Turner and Constable then the Tate Britain is the place to go. Enjoy London!

For really really touristy in London:

Go see the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace (and eat at the Hard Rock Cafe which is right there).

From Buckingham Palace you have three main really touristy choices all of which are walkable:

You can go to Knightsbridge and see Harrods, go down Sloane Street to Sloane Square and down the Kings Road.

Go the other way to Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square (the Bafta's are at Leicester Square but then you can see it without the red carpet), and poke around the West End walk up to Oxford Street.

Or in the same general direction but by walking straight out of the Park down the Mall past the ICA through Admiralty Arch you can go over to Trafalgar Square and see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.

But for pure cheese then after the changing of the Guard go by cab or tube to the Tower of London and see the Yeoman of the Guard, huge lazy Ravens, all the world's armour and the crown jewels.

Camden town is good though. Depending on how long you are in London Portobello rd market is fun. Tate modern, the London Eye all good.

If you want to feel like a tourist, just try and drive a car there. Not only is it on the wrong side of the road, but the roundabouts will scare three shades of s**t out of you.

Also, just ask random people to say words to you, like "water closet," "bangers and mash," and "Leave me the bloody hell alone!" They always like that, and never fail to be impressed by your Americaness.

Go to a Pub. Maybe the Bag O' Nails, or something like that.

Madame Tussauds London!
..

You have to go there, the celeb figures aren't even the best part! When I went they had this whole torture chamber exhibit in the basement, they had dead hookers a la Jack the Ripper, and a Joan of Arc tied to a "burning" stake, and she had sweat beads on her face, and they were playing this track that was just a woman screaming. I almost threw up, in an awesome way.
