I love that the dude who shot this video 1) saw the raccoon cowering in the corner, 2) thought he should help, 3) thought, "Oh wait, this would make great video," then 4) left the raccoon there while he went back in his low-rent apartment to fish his camcorder out of a milkcrate in a closet.
A mitzvah, indeed.

P.S. What happened to Natalie Merchant, anyway? It's like she became a different person post-10,000 Maniacs -- a way-less-good-songwriting person.

Poor baby - I can't stand to see animals suffer. I wonder why we can watch horrible people tragedies on the news and not a shed a tear, and get so emotional at stuff like this. Films like this get me every time.

Challenge met-misted not cried. I love the Gemini duality that is the Deebster. I grew up in Montana where they shoot these adorable critters. Not me though. I have a feeling that she would have found a way out of that dumpster stump or naught.

I knew a guy in San Francisco who was a lousy house keeper. It attracted a Raccoon, then its mate. In a few weeks he had a whole family of Raccoons parading into his kitchen to check out his new garbage. I think it says something about urban homeostatic symbiosis. Don't let them near Barnabas, and you'll be OK. >;)

Cry about? Anthropomorphizing? Althought it is indeed a lovely video, Rocky was probably sawing zzz's in that bin when the primate opened the lid.
Raccoons are nocturnal. They sleep during the day. They can get in and out of such places with ease. He (she?) didn't seem *injured* to me. Seemed pretty nimble and sprightly for someone just woken up by a huger, more dangerous mammal.
Probably'll be back there tonight with friends for dinner. "Hey, dudez!" she'll tell them, "get a load of this: they not only leave out all kinds of food in bags, they'll let you sleep for a bit and then give you a BRANCH to climb out on!"

Yeah, that little guy was totally just spending the day there and could have gotten out at any time.
I used to have entire families of raccoons that would spend the day sleeping in the dumpster near my old apartment. They'd get a little pissy when you'd open the door and let all the light in, but sure enough, would jump right out after the sun set.

wow. that is really sweet.
The raccoon looked like my cat whenever I have visitors. It totally scares and traumatizes her. I think it is their way of playing dead or something. Poor thing. This is why they should close the lids though. Human waste isnt good for those little critters and the fall could have hurt it (or it could have been killed via other even nastier means.)
Nice to see others who love animals.

What's weird is that the racoon already had representation when the video was filmed, and now its people are quietly asking about sharing from the revenue.

Christian the Lion at World's End was made documenting the translocation of Christian from England to Kenya.
There is something to be said, again, about the sweetness of your heart. Comparing this escape to the return of a trained lion to the wild really shows that you are an 'equal opportunity' love giver.
Christian was the King of Beasts, bought at Harrods, to be in movies. While this little fella is 1 of 1000's of wild garbage stealers. While we can see that in the end they were both helped along to return to their 'natural habitat', for the Lion that meant resuming his role as King, but for the Racoon, it was just looking for another dumpster to eat out of and sleep in.
I am honored to say that Diablo Cody is neither a pauper nor a Queen (and certainly not a hologram) but simply a warm hearted person who sees the world as being filled not with Kings and beggars, but of people equal to be loved.

He Mr. camera guy! How about next time you see an animal suffering you don’t run upstairs and get the video cam, tell a story about how you found the poor creature, video tape yourself heroically getting a log from the woods, dub over sappy music and then pat yourself on the back for letting this animal sit (frightened and alone) for an extra 30 minutes while you rehearse your lines and plan your camera work.
Just help the poor thing out for fuck sake!
p.s. No crying here, but profound sadness for the little guy is certain.

What a nice way to (almost) end my day....Enough on the complaints about the guy filming this and making himself look like a hero....But you know what, he is a hero. Most people would have selfishly went on their merry way, not giving a damn. To take the time to get a sturdy branch and situate it carefully so the little guy could make his way out of that potential death trap...and to have it preserved on video...it was just an incredibly sweet example of someone playing good Samaritan (something the world needs more of nowadays)...and I know it sounds crazy, but I could sense a thank you from that racoon's demeanor.
Thanks for sharing, Diablo.(insert long distance cyber hug here)....

Damn you Cody!!
I have only cried twice in living memory - when the Iron Giant sacrificed himself ("Superman"), and again when Penelope and Desmond finally made phone contact (OK, and maybe again when they got to kiss last week).
And now you got me crying over a little raccoon climbing a stick.
