Current mood: animated
Been gone too long, obvs. It's been a hectic couple of weeks, what with the trans-Pacific shenanigans, Tara pickup, family in town, yadda. No excuse for abandoning my MySpace duties. And you guys are-- as always-- sweeter than cupcakes. Overpriced status cupcakes, even!

Japan was, well, a trip. More on that later.

Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes! My big day (last Saturday) began with an earthquake in Tokyo. We called it the "birthquake" in jest, but Jesus, what a horrible thing for the people at the epicenter.

I got some really cool gifts, including a present that was actually intended to shame me. Long story short: I have never seen An American Werewolf in London (I know, I know) and someone who shall remain nameless (Edgar Wright) gave me a copy of said DVD with "Diablo, please watch my movie. John Landis" scrawled on the cover.

Yes, John Landis actually wrote that. And yes, I feel properly ashamed.

My parents are in town right now. We had dinner at Pace, the little restaurant tucked beneath the legendary Canyon Country Store in my neighborhood. It's always awesome to see them.

I am really so happy about Tara. I can't wait to share.

Barnabas is getting chubby, which means I can sing the Plumpers hot dog jingle to him every morning.

Bye!

Woah woah woah woah...woah. Woah. You'd never seen An American Werewolf in London?! I thought that was required viewing in the application process for getting your Movie Geek card...

Still, I guess if you're gonna see it, might as well see it with John Landis' name personally written on the cover.

Werewolf was Required Viewing cause Davie Naughton was a pretty good family friend back then. Drifting occurred later.

Funny that you mention the Country Store. I was just reminiscing on the phone with a gal pal in Goa about that joint. She used to live down the block on Honey Drive.

And I'm always happy to share my Cool Factor with y'all. *wink*

P.S. I am 31 years old, and I have also never seen "An American Werewolf in London". I have also never seen any of the "Godfather" movies, "Star Trek" movies, "Star Wars" movies, or "Lord of the Rings" movies.

Should I just go ahead and bury myself alive now or wait until I get beat up?

you like 'Luis Bunuel' but have you seen all the 'Jean Cocteau' movies?
I'll trade you a Dali book for your Luis Bunuel book.

It will be the John Landis episode next week on Fear ItSelf.

Glad you're back, DC. I was starting to think you'd deserted us....But I knew with the show pick up, you'd be busy penning future episodes; also working on your 2nd book, folks in from Chicago way and so on....Didn't know the "trip" had come and gone. Hope you got a kimono while there...

That is way too cool about Landis signing a copy of "American Werewolf" for you. It's been forever since I've seen it and wasn't too impressed at the time (I was more of a "Howling" guy), but I've been thinking about giving it another go; did love some of the set pieces, especially David Naughton's initial transformation which was very creepy and very well done....Made me completely forget that this was the same guy that became famous as a singing/dancing Dr. Pepper pitchman as well as the maker of that one-hit wonder disco gem, "Making It".

You know what I love?

I love that you love the word "shenanigans"... my mom used to say that when I was just a wee lad. I nearly pissed myself when I heard Ellen Page say that line in Juno; "what other shenanigans...?" In fact, when I heard that line, the words "best screenplay" just popped into my head...

I just read a blurb about Ellen in Entertainment Weekly and they used "shenanigans" too... you should pull a Donald Trump and copyright it, since you're basically responsible for pulling it out of it's long retirement and re-installing it into modern vernacular... you might as well get paid whenever someone uses it. (ask Gene Simmons to explain the fine-points of how to go about this)

I also love Pace... went there for my birthday. Great little restaurant... it's just too bad they don't serve plumpers.

Sorry about the earthquake... have you experienced one here in L.A. yet? That's always fun... especially at 4:15a.m.

I can't wait to read everything you'll write about Japan... I'm sure it was magical.

peace2U, miss Cody

Jimbo: What's all the ruckus over there?
Mayor: Sounds like somebody declared shenanigans.
Jimbo: Oh, hell, I have to run home and grab my broom!

Officer Barbrady: Ho-kay okay, let's calm down. People of South Park, do you declare Shenanigans on the carnival people?
Townspeople: Yeah!
Officer Barbrady: Okay, carnival people, do you accept this decree of Shenanigans?
Woman: …What the hell are you talking about?! This whole town is screwy!
Officer Barbrady: Well, that settles it! Everybody grab a broom, it's Shenanigans! [the town cheers, and some of the folks have brooms already. They gang up on the carnival people and beat them all for a long time. Stan and Kyle just watch]

(from "Cow Days" episode of 'SOUTH PARK," 1998)

O'Hagen: We're all in the same boat, fellas.
Mac: But our shenanigans are cheeky and fun.
Thorny: Yeah, his shenanigans are cruel and tragic.
Foster: Which wouldn't make them shenanigans, at all, really.
Mac: (Irish voice) Evil shenanigans!
O'Hagen: I swear to God, I'll pistol whip the next guy that says 'shenanigans!'
Mac: Hey Farva, what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?
Farva: You mean Shenanigan's?
Mac, Foster and Thorny: Oh, no! (Laughing) (Mac hands O'Hagen his gun.)
Farva: You're talking about Shenanigan's, right?

(from SUPER TROOPERS, 2001)

I'm just sayin'...

American Werewolf in London actually evokes the old "Dr Pepper" theme song for me.

And, somewhat amusing alongside the "Plumpers" commercial there, are the "related videos" you see afterward -- many of which feature, well, BBW models.

Wouldn'tcha like to be a plumper too?

Ooh! Ooh! And one of my favorite movies is "Night of the Comet" and one of your commenters was in it! Night of the Comment! Huzzaw.

Brook,

will you be addressing the recent news:
"schoolgirl pact leads to 17 pregnancies"
...
"Stumped for an explanation, officials pointed to the popularity of this year's Oscar-winning film Juno, a heart-warmer about a schoolgirl who finds herself expecting and decides against the quick fix of abortion."

"Adults in Gloucester, MA variously blame a depressed local economy, broken families, adrift children, difficult access to birth control and hit movies like "Juno" and "Knocked Up" that they say glamorize pregnancy to young audiences."

a few news reports are even use stills from Juno.

Why is it that the some people love to lay the blame on Video Games, TV, Movies, the Internet, and myspace. Is it because they don't take responsibility for their own parenting failures.

1) You'd never seen "An American Werewolf in London"? Really? This is not nearly as bad as my friend who didn't watch "The Godfather" in its entirety until she was in her early 30s, but still ... :)

2) So what did you think of it?

3) When you won the Oscar, do you know which of your parents started crying first? I saw them on Oprah, and they both seemed extremely proud of you - which I know is, like, duh, but still, it was very cute to see.

4) If you like small, charming places to feast, may I recommend the O.P. Cafe at 33rd and Ocean Park in Santa Monica. Good, cheap breakfast and lunch, along with some of the best homemade pastries in the area.

5) There's something just ... wrong ... about that hot dog commercial. :)

6) I think we need a pic of the pooch in all of his fat and happy glory.

Japan! Tara! Earthquake! Birthquake! Edgar Wright! John Landis! Parents visiting!

Crap on toast! Yeah D, that's a big couple of weeks... Glad you survived it, on many levels. As for An American Werewolf in London, my favorite scene involves Micky Mouse.

Glad you're back and well. My thoughts are going out to the people of Japan and frankly the rest of the world that seems to be going through one natural disaster after another. It's almost like the earth is trying to shake us of her back...

Take care.

Okay, Diablo, not sure why I'm sitting here, giving your site love when I should be working on my own script. I'm at the third act and I'm terrified to write it. Based on the positive comments I've received on the first two acts, I'm scared the finale won't measure up to the goodness of the rest of what I've written. Why can't movies just have two acts. That'd make this a shitload easier. :/
