Man, I gotta tell ya, last night's show at Marty Mcgees in Prospect Park, PA was outstanding. Not so much because of the venue or the size of the crowd but because of the bands that played. It was one of the best shows that I've ever been part of because of the talent of the bands, and I'm not just saying that because of the fact that I'm in two of the bands. Yes, I really like the bands that I am in, and I thought it was the best Grave Mistake performance that I've been part of. I'm really starting to feel out the songs and trying to add some S-finger into them and that's been fun, My Version of It was a little sluggish, and I don't think it's the best idea ever to continue to play joint GM/MVOI sets like that, one per show, I suppose, or a combined double short set of 10 songs.. But, If we weren't in Grave Mistake or MVOI, I think I'd really enjoy seeing those bands. The first band Reactor Radio from South Jersey is hands down the best and most professional punk band that I've seen in a very long time. They kicked so much ass. I'm literally counting down the minutes until I can get home and check out th demo CD they gave out. Then GM performed a killer set (and I just might say that because I'm just now getting comfortable with the material) and MVOI play a short set following, I think we all thought 21 songs was too much, so we ended up doing 6 or 7 MVOI songs instead of 11, then Philly's The Lopez. Damn this band is killer, I can't even take it. They are just my favorite band I've seen in a long time. I don't know what it is about them. I think the only work I can use to describe them is infectious. They're deceptively awesome. They supposedly have a drummer that they're gonna start working with, and the only negative about them is that it's hard to get the sound right for them because they don't have a drummer yet.. but, even so, they should be huge, even though they are a pretty new band.
So I sit there watching The Lopez realizing what is happening that Sunday night at an irish bar in a subburb of Philadelphia.. Just a really great night for live music and rock 'n roll... These bands should be performing at huge clubs for sell out crowds. I just read an article in UnCut about the Brooklyn music scene.. and how important it is, and how important the music is.. I think 3 of the most important bands in our area performed last night and not really anyone saw it. (I'm counting GM and MVOI as one band) -- How do you get the word out about these great bands and the great music being made in Philly and our area/region? Can we lobby unCut to do an article on these bands? I just keep getting simultaneously impressed and depressed about the music in our area. There are some really great things happening and that excites me, but, not a lot of people seem to really know what's going on right under their noses.. anyway.. These bands are simply great. Thanks for a great show last night.
