I've been fortunate in life that I've never experienced the loss of someone close to me. That fortune has changed and the feeling is unlike any I have ever experienced. This past weekend the comic world and the people who knew Michael Turner have been dealt a terrible blow by his passing at age 37.

I had known Mike for more than twelve years and even through ups and downs had loved him like a brother. My respect for him as a talent and more importantly as a man could not have been higher. Mike was quite literally the strongest man I had ever met. And I believe ever will.

Mike had been sick with cancer for almost eight years and the only way one would have known is if someone else told them. He never mentioned it, he never showed it. Ever. Not because he was trying to avoid your pity because he was above that, pity simply never crossed his mind. It was because it was HIS life and he was going to fight for it and live it to its fullest. All the way to the end.

The last time I saw Michael Turner was a year ago at a comic convention. The cancer was putting up a fight and was again trying to do the unthinkable, it was trying take his life. But because of who he was, he was having none of it. I saw him, he saw me, we both smiled genuine smiles. We shook hands, and gave each other a hug the way guys do, with as much respect as love.

A few years ago Mike and I had hit a bump in our relationship that cut us both deeply. We had gotten over it and were cool but when I saw him at the convention I said to him (and myself) that we need to talk some things through just because we should. The way he looked at me and (I'm sure) what he saw in the way I looked at him said; Absolutely, but not because we need to. We were good and we both knew it. Mike was always too focused on living and loving life to dwell on bullshit from the past. That was the essence of who he was and the legacy he will leave.

Michael lived his life the way we all should, as the gift that it is. So in his honor, the next time I bitch about the stupid little things that aggravate, I'll think about the strongest man I ever met and do what he would have done, I will kick the stupid little aggravation out of the way and get on with living.

Michael Turner didn't bitch and moan and complain about the unfair cards that were dealt him. Mike knew how to live life, and we who knew him must honor him by living the same way. He lived with dignity and in the end, he knew how to die the same way.

Rest in peace my friend.

A symphony to my ears...True people should never hold grudges.
I always saw it as a weakness to forgive and forget as quickly as I do...but now I will look at it in an entirely new way.
But I see now that I'm blessed.
Life is too short to fret on Bullshit!
Its too short for hate of any kind.

There are only 3 people that I buy comics for, Jim lee, you, and Michael Turner.
While you and Jim have great myspaces that allow the end user to get a fantastic insight into the artist - I was never able to find one on Mike. Because of that I never knew that he had cancer, and this came as a major shock...
I feel the art world has lost one of its greats.
Thanks for your person take.

I had no the fortune to know him, but i'm shocked the same. He has been the man who introduced me to comics years ago with his drawings, he was one of my favourite artist but not only that. You know comics to me are almost like songs, there are comics that for some reasons brings to me particular memories, some of my best memories are in some way connected to his stunning work and that's one of the reasons he's always been special to me. His pages made me dream, made me happy, i'll miss them and i'm very grateful for all he gave to me. Maybe it's a stupid thing to say, but for me he won his battle, he lived his live as he wanted, the best he could and he continued to make his fans happy until the end, we can only respect a man like that.

My very deep condolences to you Marc, logically to his family too.

nice words marc, Mike was really the best... and yes the strongest man I ever know too, and I'll aways remember his fight... and I hope everybody will...
All my condolences to you and to his family...
I know that what ever I could say, won't take out ur pain, but I know what is loose a brother, love a really close person, I experience it in December, and it's hurt really like you never could imagine it will...
I was thinking maybe we could all do something in his memory this summer at the SD comics con,
maybe a kind of huge sheets where we could all put a message or something...I really don't know I only propose some idea...

anyway, I know that certainly damage you, a lot, and he'll always be missing by you, the worst is when you live with the person and that you have habit with this person, even without live with this person btw...
but when you do something that you was habituate to do for the person, and you realize that...never more you'll do it... and you feel really hurt... and I know that...

then take care marc, and if you need to talk or change your mind or anything else, i'm here, even if I know that i'm useless... If you need anything... just tell me... and i'll do my best for it...

with a great sadness...Simon.

Marc, this is indeed sad news. I know you and Michael were close, I can only imagine the pain you're feeling now. Michael will be sorely missed. I only hope he is now at peace and no longer in pain.

I met Michael Turner at a comic/pop culture expo here in Sydney a few years ago and he was the nicest person you would ever meet. He was considered a "superstar" in the comics industry, but you would never know that talking to him.

I have a few TPs he signed and I will now treasure them even more. You WILL NOT see them on ebay, like I'm sure some low people will do now.

The comics industry has lost one of its favourite sons. Rest in peace Michael, condolences to his family and close friends. My thoughts are with you all.

Mike will truely be missed, to be sure. I heard about his passing during the WWC con this weekend, and I thought someone was playing a mean prank on me. But when the ASPEN panel was cancelled, I knew it must be true.

I only had a single interaction with Mike, which was at the 2007 Wizard World Chicago ASPEN booth. I knew Frank from his earlier days at Top Cow, and had interviewed him for a show he did in Detroit. I was talking to him while Mike was signing in the background, and I told him, "Tell Mike to hang on, and that our thoughts and prayers are with him." At the mention of his name, Mike looked up, waved and smiled, and then went back to what he was doing.

I like to think that most other people might not have even bothered to see who was talking about them, but the guy took the 2-3 seconds to stop, smile and wave - and that means a lot.

Although he will be missed, his legacy of creativity and professional integrity will forever leave a mark for generations of comic creators to come. Although I only had that one interaction with him, it will forever be with me.

Thoughts and prayers to his friends and family, and a genuine thank you to him for everything that he's done.

These are tragic news indeed.
Mike will be remembered, as a wonderful talent and artist, but also as a great person.
I loved his art since the beginning, and it's still unbelievable to see what he's been able to produce, while having to struggle with cancer.

Huge lesson of life, humility, courage, and dedication to the fans.

RIP Michael Turner.

Indeed Marc, those of us that had a chance to hang out and get to know Mike on a more personal level got to see what an amazing, strong will man he was. The times that I got to sit and chat with him never did he gave me the impression of being sick or in pain. I'm a cancer survivor and I know from personal experience how tough and painful that is and the effects of the Chemo and the radiation on the body, but Mike never showed that side. He was always smiling and joking and just being a fun guy always talking about his projects, goals and all around positive things that just left me saying to myself, "WOW!" Not only I looked up to him for inspiration and as a guide as an artist, but as strength. His courage and will to live got me through some very rough times in my life and gave me the strength to put up the most intense fight of my life. A year later I stand here victorious and in perfect health. I don't think I could've done it without the words Mike once said to me nor the strength he gave me through his ongoing battle and his spirit to go on and not look back. Wherever you are Mike, may God have you in HIS eternal glory. Hope you found the peace that you fought so hard to obtain down here. I will miss you terribly like no words could ever explain. Rest in peace, dear Mike. - EOS.-

And for you both being MEN and letting past bullshit go to the way side. That shows great repsect for your fellow friend and fanboy! I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years back on the fathom tour at Mega Con in 98. And he was absolutely a great man. Not only just in respect but he was greatfull for people coming out to meet him and the crew. And I remember when he was asked to take his break and go to lunch, he said no. Not until the line is done. Great respect for the people who made him what he was besides loving life and what he did. Thanks for the kind words and I wish him the best of luck! I can't begin to understand the friendship let alone the type of relationship both of you had but if what you wrote is anything to go by then I guess the only thing is that you and all who knew him feel blessed to have known him, and to have had him in your lives as a friend. I can't and won't make a comment as to how this has made me feel but to say his artwork from the first moment of seeing it inspired me to "get my Ass!! in gear!!" so to speak would be an understatement, I hope that anyone who reads your blog Marc gets from it 2 things the first is that no matter who you are Dignity, compasion and love are all needed to be a great person and Micheal from everyone who has spoken of him had it in heaps, the second life is a gift and one that you should share with everyone around you.

Ive never met Michael Turner, and for that i feel slighted. But I will try to remember who he was and what he stood for. I've seen his art (which was incredible and beautiful), But since his passing I've heard countless stories of the man. Of a man that touched many by his positive attitude in the face of adversity. For this he's a hero. Cancer is the devil. It's evil. Michael has beaten it though. I dont care what anyone says. Like the heroes he drew he is a hero, and he has beaten cancer

Honestly I don't think any of us realized how sick Mike really was cause he never showed it. There was always a smile on his face and a greeting for everyone. Mark, everyone has bumps that come along in their friendships, but true friends work through it like you guys did. I loved his work as much as I do yours. It hit me and my brother like a ton of bricks. In fact the last time I actually I saw my brother cry was as hard as he did at Chicago, was when we lost our mother back in January. It was great meeting you and sharing our story w/ you. You, your family and Michael's Family are in our thoughts and prayers. I met Mike for the first time about five years ago in Chicago, at a bar in the Hyatt that used to be called Knuckles. He was playing pool so I asked if I could play. I'm a decent pool player and he kicked my ass for over an hour. I started seeing him around the circuit just like everyone. he was one of the nicest guys that I've ever met. I've watched the progression of his cancer over the past few years and thought that somehow that he was just going to be fine.

This past weekend I was working at Wizard World Chicago when his death was announced... It really hung heavy in the air. You could see it on the face of every creator there. Everyone knew Mike, and knew how how great of a person he was. He treated everyone with respect, and never stopped smiling. Even when in pain he signed in a wheelchair.

I feel lucky to have known him. He will be missed.
