So yesterday, I was trying to figure out what to do with my Friday night. I had just found out that I'd been assigned to Namibia for the upcoming trip with the UN's HERO Campaign to Africa. I wanted to celebrate, as this was really where I wanted to be.
So I'm sitting at home and I get an IM from my friend Stanley. Stanley is an actor in Broadway's "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." He asked if I had any plans for that night and invited me to come to the show as his guest. He also said "something very special would be happening and that he couldn't say what it was. He also wanted to introduce me to Mo Rocca (who is also starring in the show, and will be hosting my upcoming BROADWAY LOVES THE 80'S Concert). I was in.
So we arrived at the theatre at about 7:40 and I was looking for what was up...and there it was...a few secret service guys by the entrance of the theatre. We took our seats and lo and behold...William Jefferson Clinton right there in the middle of the theatre!
The show was tremendously entertaining. I'd seen it several times before and I was a little concerned that it was going to be a carbon copy of the original cast, which I had several friends in. Often times, replacement casts are directed to copy what the original cast did to a fault. I was VERY happily surprised that this cast truly made it their own. They are all utterly talented and I laughed at all the kokes as if I was hearing them for the first time.
After the show, the cast came up to greet their friends waiting and I finally got to meet Mo. We headed across the street to a bar with the cast and I got to have a wonderful conversation with one of Mo's managers, Don. Then when everyone else left, Stanley, my friend Justin, Mo and I headed to another bar and had a couple more drinks. Mo is a sweetheart...extraordinarily smart and a very good listener. I tend to talk a lot about things I'm passionate about when I've had a few drinks. He responded in kind.
A really wonderful night. Go catch Spelling Bee next week and see Mo in it before he leaves. SO much fun! And keep up on his blog on AOL www.morocca180.com!
