Current mood:  sad
So let's get the logistics out of the way first.

Yesterday I received a phone call I've received three other times in my life - but one that never cut so deep as this. I learned that I would NOT be returning to Days of our Lives when the strike ends. My time in Salem is done - ended back on November 1st when I turned my last breakdown in, and I didn't know it.

I could probably launch into an essay about the inner workings of a television show... the secret cabals and the backalley strike deals that were made. I could potentially try and analyze the entire situation, try and find out how a writing team that started off the year doing strong, then ended up in LAST PLACE (due to dictates from the higher-ups), then somehow managed to come back and end the year in 4th place in Households and 1st place in the 18-34 demographic were all summarily kicked out at once. But this isn't about asking those questions, or trying to analyze what happened, or why we're not going home to Days again when the strike ends. That's not why I wanted to write this.

Instead, this is a sad goodbye to a town I grew up with. To Tony and Anna, characters I never dreamed would be on my screen again, much less saying the words I wrote. To LeAnn and Lauren Koslow, for letting me write the one and only Kate/Anna scene of 2007 - a story I hoped and prayed would be picked up at one point. And who knows - maybe it still will be? To Julie Pinson, who redefines supporting player, and SHOULD be a leading lady... and whom I always tried so hard to give more to. I'm sorry, Julie - you deserved better. To Bo and Hope, for letting me infuse them with a sense of humor again. and especially Kristian Alfonso, for collaborating with me on one of the most wonderful eulogies at John Black's funeral. To John and Marlena, two characters I struggled with, and were JUST figuring out and finally learning to love again weeks before the strike brought everything to a crashing halt. You taught me how to delve deeper, to see how complex you both were - and how you weren't cartoons at all, but truly detailed, layered characters. To Steve and Kayla, and especially my lovely Judi Luciano (who remembered me from when I was an INTERN at Another World nine years ago!!!), who I had the pleasure of writing for again as Adrienne - the Johnson family are personal favorites of mine. And to write Benjy's death broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes - and I wouldn't have had it any other way. To Nick and Chelsea and Max and Stephanie and Belle and Shawn - for teaching me how to write kids, how NOT to write kids, and especially to Brandon and Martha for letting me move them out of the world of "kids" and into adulthood. And to Sami, Lucas and EJ - three characters who went round and round, and always taught me something new about the power of temptation, redemption and love.

I'm also saying goodbye to the most wonderful team of writers I've worked with. there wasn't one moment of paranoia, bitterness, anger, drama, jealousy - nothing but laughter and support and a genuine love for what we do. That's so rare to find around a writers' table in soaps these days, and even if they don't realize it, they really taught me so much. They were my heroes before I got the job, and they're my heroes after. Hogan Sheffer is a gentleman, a scholar and a true friend and mentor. Whether you liked what he did or hated it, I'm telling you - as a boss, you can't ask for anything more. He is full of joy. He is integrity. He is the real deal.

But most of all... I write this to the fans of Days of Our Lives.

We writers do not have much contact with you. Sure, we get focus groups results, and we see how what we write is reflected in the ratings. But there hasn't been a whole lot of interaction between us over the years. Which is a shame really. We share a love for this fictional town - and we all want to see it thrive. Why put that wall between us? I started this blog almost a year ago, to talk about my time in Salem... and how amazing it was to write for a show I watched every day growing up. And I met some WONDERFUL fans. People who watch the show, love the show, understand the show, and just want it to be the best it could be. I listened to you. I spread your concerns. I tried to do right by you. I wanted to give John Black a send-off people would never forget...that wasn't just another Salem funeral you've seen so many times. I wanted to give you both a Thanksgiving and a Christmas episode that were old-fashioned soap opera - family bonds, and memories, and drama, and flashbacks and montages and warm fuzzies mixed in with the death threats. And you responded by telling me how much you enjoyed those episodes. Which gives me hope that the soap opera world doesn't have to be about plot stunts and location shoots and sensationalistic stories. You want life. You want love. You want friendship and desire and loss and gain and death and resurrection. You want to feel something. You want to be moved. You want to believe. And for a brief moment in time, we got to give it to you in Salem. And I hope it continues. Maybe there is hope for this genre after all.

So thank you for one of the best years of my life. Who knows where I'll end up next... wherever I do end up, I'll take with me everything I learned at Days - what I did right AND what I did wrong. (And Lord knows there were plenty of clunkers I wrote in the last year too... don't think I didn't cringe along with you when  they aired, my friends) But whichever town I end up penning next, I promise you this: I will continue listening to what you all have to say. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - we're in this together: the writers, directors, actors, crew AND THE FANS. And we all want to see a successful world fully realized 250 hours a year.

Thank you so much for 2007. So long, Salem! I'll miss you most of all!

Love, Tom
Kandy

Tom, What a beautiful message, obviously from the heart. I am so sorry to hear that you are leaving Salem, but my thoughts and positive wishes are with you...hoping you and your pen will end up somewhere soon for all of us to enjoy.

Best wishes,
Kandy

Tom,
I am so sorry to hear that someone with so much passion for the show and in depth knowledge of its history won't be continuing to help guide it. As a 25-year Days fan and aspiring soap writer, I must say I haven't been too happy with the show in recent years, but it was truly making a turn around before the strike. John's funeral, the infusing of history with mentions of Vivian and Victor was Days at it's best. Good luck in all future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Jamey Giddens

Tom,
I love what you wrote! I am a long time Days fan who has so much hope for a renewal next month. To hear that someone with your passion and love for the soap has been let go makes my heart sink. I am sorry to hear what you are going through.
2007 has been a rough year for Days, which is surprising when I read about your love and promise for the characters. The fact that you wrote one of my favorite scenes of the year - Anna vs. Kate, and wanted more Billie - makes me love you even more.
Couldn't you do something better with EJ and Sami, my other two NEW favorites. Also, whose dumbass, boneheaded idea was it to have EJ "rape" Sami last year. I am so over it and really never saw it that way, but when you have such a talented actor with a large fanbase who supposedly rapes the one he has the most chemistry with, it kind of ruins the characters. What da hell happened with that?
Anyways, someone with your passion should certainly not have a problem finding another job, but I will miss you and your commitment to my favorite soap. You were an asset to them, and I hope you have nothing but success in your next adventure!
With much appreciation!
Allison

I am not a Days of Our Lives fan but I am a soap fan and I loved what you had to say about writing for a soap opera. I have watched General Hospital for more years than I can count. I have always wanted to talk to the writers and ask them why they write some of the things they do -- things that don't make sense to me from a viewer's standpoint. I miss the days of character-driven stories that tap into the history of the characters and the history of the show. You are right when you talk about plot points and stunts -- and especially on GH, the gratuitous violence. We soap viewers are a simple lot. All we ask is that the writers tell a good story. Ask any viewer of any soap opera and they will tell you that they just want to see romance, family and friends relationships and stories that touch their hearts -- stories that will make them laugh, cry and be moved.

I am so glad that there is at least one writer out there who gets that. I have always thought that it would be a wonderful idea for the writers to reach out to viewers and tap into their knowledge of the show and see what it is they like and don't like. Not those phony focus groups, but real every day viewers -- people that have an investment in the show that they watch. They could have public appearances with maybe 20-50 people at a time -- a small, intimate gathering where viewers and writers talk about the show they love. I wish I had known your blog existed before today. I would have loved to have read more of your thoughts. I am sorry that it turned out this way for you, but things always happen for a reason and maybe there is a better job out there for you where your talents can be fully utliized. Maybe you could get a job at General Hospital. I would love to see what you could write for that show. Good luck -- from a former Brooklynite!

I'm really sorry to see you go. You were doing great work with the Johnson Family, my faves. I hope you find something you enjoy very soon. And here's hoping the strike ends soon with the writer's getting everything they ask for. I really want my primetime shows back on the air and with more episodes than just 12.

Good Luck :)

I am coming in to say, I was a viewer who returned when Steve/Kayla did. I stayed when Hogan was hired and loved many of his stories which I now know you were a part of too. Thanks for giving me my favorites like Steve/Kayla, Nick/Chelsea, Bo/Hope, Billie, Adrienne, and Phillip. I am upset about this change in the writing team, I see a significant drop in quality since the scripts have run out.

Good luck in what you do. We at Days will really miss you.

What a wonderful letter...so gracious and heartfelt. I've watched DAYS for over 20 years (!) and it's clear that you had a real love of the characters and the show.

I'm sure this will end up being an opportunity for you to move forward and find a "home" where you're truly appreciated.

Until then, just know that you have many people who are rooting for you!

Thank you for a beautiful post. The scenes you wrote were the most touching I have seen on Days in a long time. I will be honest....I'm not happy with the shenanigans going on right now over there. I cannot figure it out, but want you to know that the FANS appreciate what you did to bring some dignity and beauty to our show. Thank you very much.

I don't even want to get into who your replacements are going to be (but, of course, without naming names, I have some ideas for who you could replace...)

If you do come to LA tomorrow, drinks on me. And lots of 'em.

While being unemployed sucks, after reading your interview with Toupes, I feel no loss that you will no longer be writing for Days. Your work was substandard and your "group" of hacks ruined the best thing to come along in ages, EJami. Your admission that you had no desire to write them as romantic spits on their entire fan base. And you suck if that scene was supposed to be rape. Those who have really been raped know what happened in that car. Those that are "outraged" are LUMI fans that just want their couple. You walked out on your job when you went on strike, you took a show that was third to last place in the ratings. You weren't good at your job. People who aren't good at their jobs get fired. End of story.

I read your interview with Topes from SON and I am beyond disappointed. You claim here to write for the fans, what about the EJ and Sami fans out their? I have been watching this show for 13 years. Did you ever take us into consideration? You and your team went out of your way to screw our couple over, systematically destroying what could have been the greatest supercouple in Days history and while you were at it the show as a whole. Thanks for nothing.

Your blog was very touching. While I am sorry you got fired, I do think the show needed something new. I hate to say it, but the show has been fantastic in the last couple of weeks. It's moving along at a nice pace, not dragging on forever. I also read the Toups interview and had to laugh when you said you worked really hard at redefining who Phillip was. I'm not trying to be nasty, but the character of Phillip has never been worse than it was in 2007. He became a pathetic, whiny shell of the man he was. I mean, he was Marine, for Pete's sake. They way he went after Belle, after she told him time and again that she was with Shawn was disgusting. I practically threw up in my mouth every time I watched him beg her to "pick me, pick me". It was gross. Seriously, no woman wants a man like that and the fact that she finally gave in...that would never happen. He was practically stalking her. Now, he has backed off, he's the strong, confident man he once was.

Anyway, that's my rant. I don't mean to offend, but DOOL really needed a breath of fresh air. In 2007, I didn't care if I missed an episode, partly because the s/l's dragged on for so long, you really wouldn't miss much if you missed a few episodes. In the last couple of weeks, I haven't missed an episode.

I do have to give props for John's funeral though, it was probably the best funeral I've seen on DOOL...I've been watching for about 25 years. Also, kudos for bringing Marlena back as the strong woman she is! I was so tired of the "woe is me" Marlena! Good job on that.

Good luck in your future endeavors!

I have to agree with Randi. Days needed something new. I could watch about 3 days a week and still not have missed anything. One of the biggest reasons I stopped watching so much was the demise of the Sami EJ romance. I loves them together! That was my biggest reason to keep watching everyday.
I did enjoy alot of your storylines, dont get me wrong. I just wanted to be so tuned into the show that I cant wait for the next one. Days needs a little fresh air I think.
I am very sorry to hear about you losing your job though. Good luck onyour quest to find something new! I really hope DOOL hopes to redeem EJAMI. They could possibly be the next Supercouple!

Tom, I must agree with the two above posters about EJami...especially Sephora.
It would be a good idea for you to just keep quiet and move on...because the more you talk, the more I think less of your writing and talent.
I must say that after taking inventory, Days 2007 was the worst storylines I have seen in awhile. AirHo/Tinda Lau/EJami rape/vets reading letters...even Hope at JB funeral was my least favorite of funeral scenes...let's talk Victor coming to speak or Roman "glad he shared my name" or even Stefano's entrance. Hope was the least memorable.
Your comment about Sami doing nothing but hating EJ shows that you had no clue what you were writing. If Sami hated EJ, she would have shot him in the dick like she does her rapists. You wrote an awful scene that I still don't consider rape...shame for making so light of a subject, then had two of the most magnetic actors on screen flip flop like a bunch of schitzos.
Stop talking.

Hi Tom --

My main reason for posting here is in regards to the last few negative posts. I do understand their pain, especially as an EJAMI fan, but we aren't all that harsh :) I think EJAMI fans felt jipped once Hogan took the helm, and there was so much teasing between the two fan bases that it really got out of control. I've been watching days since the early 80's, and honestly, I haven't seen a couple that struck a cord with me chemistry wise or otherwise like EJAMI has in YEARS...........Steve and Kayla and Jack and Jen were smokin' back in the day, but about the only thing JER did well was bring on James Scott for Sami to breathe life back into the show, IMO. The problem is, soon after Hogan came on board and ruined that.
While I agree that the storylines since Hogan came onboard are the reason for the falling ratings, I do not think the writing has been bad at all. What Hogan and you and all the rest did well was create some very good scenes and exchanges between characters. I kept wanting to stub my toe though because the actual storylines were what was lacking ------ and the entire 'rape' of Sami was just silly considering how badly it was handled after. And it was handled badly. A story like that doesn't get that much press and internet griping fans otherwise.
I appreciate your love for DOOL though, as you spoke so warmly about the characters and Salem, whichb is how I feel after watching them so long. I do wish you the best, and hope that the new writers will at least be open to exploring the EJAMI pairing the way JER intended since the Lucas and Sami story is so old, tiring, and unb elievable on so many levels.......I only hope that the new writers will at least put half as much heart into the characters as you have though, and I wish you luck.......

I have been watching Days since I was a teen ... Not telling how many years ago THAT was!! And Since then I have gotten my kids and many friends addicted!! - I had honestly stopped watching (all the time) for a couple of years, but I had a friend tell me that things had changed for the better and so I started to watch again last year ... (Long and short) ... Thank you for everything you wrote and may God Bless you richly in life from here on out.

Stars in their Eyes

I followed "Days of our Lives" religiously from 1996-2002. It was during those years that I honed my own love of writing and of television in general, and I admit quite a few of my favorite actors today started on that show. In the past few years I have become busy with productions of my own, but I never forgot my love for "Days" and even did my college thesis on the fan culture of the show. I still watch on occasion, especially during my recent bout with unemployment due to the WGA Strike, and while I was sad to see so many of my favorite characters gone or severely recast, I stuck with it because the overarching themes were still there, and they are the same as what I first fell in love with.

I cannot even begin to tell you how sickened I was to hear that soaps were going on without using their regular union writers. I never thought they would deal such a low blow to the industry or the art of storytelling in general. I hope there is great backlash on this decision-- both from the media and the fans-- because that is the only way to get people to understand how important these issues are. So many who do not live in LA or NY don't understand why their soaps remain untouched when their primetime favorites are missing, but they NEED to.

Wishing you all the best and a new contract gig soon,

Thank you so much for all of your hard work in Salam this past year! I have a house full of Days fans, 4 boys, my husband and myself. I grew up watching Days, and my husband grew up thinking that all soaps were waisted air time. Now he will ask me for recaps, and watch the DVR'd shows! When something from the past is brought up he will ask what they are refrenceing. This all begain within the past year.

You will be very missed. I was in tears reading your blog. Good luck to you in the future. I am a firm believer that where God closes a door, somewhere he opens a window. I'm sure there is a window somewhere just waiting for you to climb in.

I just wanted to say thank you for all that you have put into and given to the town of Salem, whereever it may be in the good old U S of A.

I have watched DOOL since I was in 8th grade (I've now been done with my BA degree for 4 years and am about to become a mommy in just 2 short months), so it's been AWHILE. My very first episode I ever saw was when Bo and Billie were at the mountain lodge and they found "Gina" and we're trying to figure out if she could possibly be the one and only Hope Brady or not.

Thanks again for all you have given to the show and to us, the fans.

Wow...I have to say this comes as a shock. I honestly thought this year for Days was an awesome one. I have never cried so much watching Days as much as I have this past year. I started watching Days about 21 years ago as a little girl. I have never been more moved by the storylines. What I really love about the show is how much I actually related to it. I lost my father January 29th, 2007 and when they brought the storyline of John' s death. It was so real. I've never thought that a soap could ever be that way. Especially considering so many people say how fake soaps are, but to actually have a storyline be so real. I give Martha a hell of a lot of credit playing her character during that story of her father passing away. She was awesome. I personally think this past year has been one of the best years for Days. So I have no idea where the Days Exec's get off getting rid of all of you. I think it's a rotten shame. Even the Colleen/Santo story has been awesome. To finally know how John came to be and to know his past and who his parents are. It's about time. I just think it's a shame John couldn't find this out being John and not the one who doesn't remember anything. But thats ok. I just wish they would stop getting rid of these main characters and stop bringing in ones that really do no justice to the show.

Tom...I wish you and all of the other writers who were fired a lot of luck in the future and just know your writing was awesome. Keep it up in wherever your next adventure takes you. I wish the best of luck to the other characters that were let out of their contracts as well. We'll all miss you.

Tom,
I LOVED the scene between Anna & Kate !!!!!! Just the dynamics of it all- thanks for that & much more. I have also been watching Days since the early 70's- my grandparents got me started & I've been hooked ever since.

Good luck with the next chapter in your life- if you need a references, let us know!!!

I find your concern and love for the show moving. I am a huge Young and Restless fan (over 30 years, although I am only in my early forties). I have never seen DOOL, but I respect someone with such passion and caring and you guys now have the greatest... Ed Scott. I want to start creating a T.V. Show, and would like your input as to how to get the attention of the right people at the networks. Good luck in your future endeavors.
