sang a new song last night...
...spent a long time getting the words right...
...the live recording is hard to hear...
...so that nobody gets confused...
...every letter matters...

waiting On The World To Change

me and all my friends
we're all misunderstood
they say we stand for nothing and
there's no way we ever could

now we see everything that's going wrong
with the world and those who lead it
we just feel like we don't have the means
to rise above and beat it

so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

it's hard to beat the system
when we're standing at a distance
so we keep waiting
waiting on the world to change

now if we had the power
to bring our neighbors home from war
they would have never missed a Christmas
no more ribbons on their door
and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got
cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want

that's why we're waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

it's not that we don't care,
we just know that the fight ain't fair
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

and we're still waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting waiting on the world to change
one day our generation
is gonna rule the population
so we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change

Grammy Award winner JOHN MAYER's glittering career will get another boost when he picks up the Starlight Award at this year's (06) Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards. The DAUGHTERS hitmaker is just the third musician to be honoured with the award, which was introduced in 2004 to celebrate young songwriters who have already made a lasting impression on the industry. MATCHBOX TWENTY singer ROB THOMAS and R+B star ALICIA KEYS are the previous winners. The June (06) ceremony in New York will see THOM BELL, MAC DAVIS, WILL JENNINGS, SYLVIA MOY and HENRY COSBY inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

I hope our generation doesn't continue to wait for the world to change.

If we don't start attempting to do something now, regardless of setbacks from "the establishment", I worry if we would even have the drive to follow through later. Changing the world will take time, and it will not happen overnight.

I do understand what you are saying with the song. Many of us do think we can't make an impact because our current leaders, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying.

Just my thoughts after looking at the lyrics again.....

Perhaps, someone may have covered this already or I'm just thinking way outside the box. .

I wonder if you wrote this through the eyes of the generation of the majority of your fans?? -which is younger than you. ?? I hope this is not where/how you stand. Sounds a bit childish/ignorant/naive for your/my generation to be saying. But then again, you know I am very political...have been for many years and this is how I felt when the Gulf War was going on with Daddy Bush over a decade ago.

Regardless, I think it's great --so priceless for you to do this. Because YOU Mr. John Mayer have the power to wake up the young kids who might have never given any sh♥t about the world before.. and make them realize "how everything is going wrong in the world today" for once. That is such a powerful thing to do which the rest of us can't do. Only someone like you... and you do. So as always, I totally appalled you, John!!!

I also wrote you a message. don't hate me though... ;-)

You know I effin' LOVE YOU!! Monica ♥ <333 XOXXO

......Thousands of friends, family and fans packed Fenders spectacular 60th Anniversary concert bash at the Tempe Music Festival, March 31-April 1 at Tempe Beach Park in (mostly) sunny Tempe, Ariz. Crowning the weekend-long event, Jeff Beck and the John Mayer Trio gave a pair of searing performances on Friday and Saturday night.

Additionally, throughout the weekend, festival goers were treated to a stellar lineup of spirited performances from Eric Johnson, Train, G. Love & Special Sauce, the Gin Blossoms, Vertical Horizon and other special guests. At the Fender Village, visitors tried out Fender guitars and basses, and watched guitar-building and pickup-winding demonstrations. Six decades of musical heritage was on display for guitar enthusiasts to touch and enjoy.

The party started early Friday evening with a dazzling and occasionally hilarious solo acoustic set by Willy Porter, who turned in an astounding display of soulful instrumental mastery that had listeners swearing they were hearing more than one guitarist, if not several at once.

I had a blast! Porter said. What a fantastic, fantastic situation. I just feel so honored to have a chance to do it. Its great playing here in front of all my heroes, including Greg Koch, whos my neighbor. And then Eric Johnson and Jeff BeckIve toured with both of those guys, so getting to see them both on one stage, at one festival, its dream-like, man. Its gonna be hard to come down from.

Next came a muscular set from Greg Koch, a towering inferno of a guitarist who dropped jaws left and right with his six-string tour de force. When Koch, bassist Roscoe Beck and drummer John Calarco tore through Creams Im So Glad, it was clear to all that they really were glad to be there.

I think this is unbelievable, Koch boomed after he set. Sixty years of rockin with the big F. Unbelievable!

Austin, Texas, a Fender town if there ever was one, was well-represented at Fridays show with back-to-back sets by the Arc Angels and Eric Johnson, each of whom turned in passionate performances. The Arc Angels, fronted by guitarist/vocalists Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II, reconvened just for the occasion, and their set was hence a rare treat.

We hadnt played together in about three months, Bramhall said. But were happy to do it. The 60th is a big one, and it seems like everybody is very excited about this, within the company and within the bands. It was fun to be a part of it.

......
 Mayer onstage.

......Johnson, thunderously backed by bassist Chris Maresh and drummer Tommy Taylor, showed the virtuosity and complete mastery of tone for which he is so revered among guitarists. The soft-spoken Texans gracious, low-key demeanor backstage belied his intensity onstage, where his black Stratocaster guitar seemed more a part of him rather than a separate instrument. Huge applause greeted the opening passages of his signature hit, Cliffs of Dover.

Oh, it was great! Johnson said of the evening. I want to thank Fender and also thank Jeff Beck for letting us play with themits a real honor to be on the same stage. This is one of my favorite statesI live in Texas, but I love Arizona. Congratulations and happy birthday to Fender!

Indeed, Becks presence loomed over the entire evening, and the night truly belonged to him. He appeared onstage with little fanfare, and simply started playing, backed by an extraordinary rhythm sectiondrum virtuoso Vinnie Colaiuta, Welsh bassist Pino Palladino and Sting keyboardist Jason Rebello. On a few songs, notably a scorching version of the Wille Dixon classic You Shook Me, they were joined by guest vocalist Beth Hart.

Its wonderful to be here, isnt it? said the lanky Palladino, who was pulling double duty at the festival as bassist for both Beck and Mayer. Its an honor to be here. Fender has always made the best basses, so Im happy to be here.

......
A few thousand fans on a nice Saturday.

......Beck said little, preferring to let his Stratocaster do the talking (and singing, screaming, aching, etc.). The performance was pure Becknotes bent as no other player does, with unmistakable sound and force. It started with Becks Bolero from his 1968 solo debut classic Truth, and continued through more than 20 songs, including favorites such as Cause Weve Ended as Lovers and Curtis Mayfields People Get Ready.

Saturdays festivities began at noon, with sunnier weather and a steadily growing crowd. At the Fender Hello Kitty Bungalow, kids strummed the wildly successful new Squier Hello Kitty guitars and listened to playing and songwriting tips from Fender mentors.

We try to inspire young women to get into music, said mentor Louise Day. Especially young girls. Mentor Marnie Ann noted that People are really attracted to the guitarseven guys were in here a lot.

Singer/songwriter Kristen Proffit said, I love it that Fender does these things that get people interested in music and songwriting. And the guitars arent toys; they play like real guitars, they sound good and theyre adorable. And theyre pink!

Back in the Fender Village, Custom Shop master builders John Cruz, Yuriy Shishkov and Chris Fleming answered questions and fascinated onlookers with their guitar-building demonstrations, while noted pickup artists Seymour Duncan and Fenders own Abigail Ybarra sat nearby, giving pickup-winding demonstrations.

Its great to be a part of this history, Cruz said. Its a good time for Fender right now. Were booming right now, like we always have, but for some reason, in the past couple of years, its just skyrocketed even more. Younger kids out there today are seeing their heroes playing Fender Strat and Tele guitars and Precision and Jazz basses, and its just good to be a part of that and to contribute to it and to add to the new generation.

......
Johnson in a recent "Happy Birthday Fender" ad.

......Ybarra has been with Fender since 1956, and is considered something of a legend among aficionados for her hand-wound pickup artistry. She was enjoying herself despite being unaccustomed to having so many spectators.

Im just so happy to be here, she said. Im having a lot of fun, but its weird. I cant get used to it because Im getting a lot of attention, and I love it, but its weird.

Hit-making Tempe favorite sons the Gin Blossoms took the stage around 3 p.m. for their biggest hometown show in years. Indeed, Tempe Beach Park is only a short walk down Mill Ave. from the site of the late, great Long Wongs, the tiny chicken wing restaurant where the Blossoms played their first gig on Christmas night, 1987. When singer Robin Wilson said Hello there! the crowd roared back as the band lit into Lost Horizons.

Its especially cool to be invited by Fender to participate in the 60th anniversary, Wilson said after the set. Its totally cool to be here with all these artists. And weve got a show next to this lake that I personally spent I dont know, Id guestimate a couple of grand of my personal taxes to pay for over the course of my lifetime. So 300 million bucksits about time its here, and its about time were using it like this. Im glad; Im really thrilled that Tempe is doing shows like this.

Blossoms bassist Bill Leen said the design and durability of his favorite instrument, the Fender Precision bass, has never been equaled.

Thats what Ive always played, he said. My first bass was a Fendera mid-70s one. I still have it; its the one that I recorded our first record with. It just feels right for me, and I just keep going back to it, even when we recorded our new record. And theyre indestructibleyou can, like, throw them, or they can fall, and youre thinking Is it broken? And then you come back on and your guitar guy hands it to you for the encore and its still in tune.

Saturday afternoon also saw the appearance of the so-called JM3 Crew, a group of about 20 fairly rabid John Mayer fans decked out in t-shirts emblazoned with Mayer written in Fender-logo script. They came from all overCalifornia, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, Washington, even Canada.

His voice is home to me, said Erin Hetrick of Huntington Beach, Calif. Hes bringing great music to our generation when we need it most.

Sarah Fischel of Seattle said Mayer is such an intelligent musician, and so honest. He doesnt take being a famous musician for granted.

......
Palladino played with Beck and Mayer at the
 festival.

......Other afternoon and early evening performances included Vertical Horizon and crowd favorites G. Love and Special Sauce, whose rap-rocking Mr. Love probably spewed out more syllables than all the festivals other vocalists combined. Meanwhile, on the nearby Fender Stage, the five teenage musicians in the Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars (yes, that School of Rock) were a huge hit, cranking out energetic, note-perfect versions of the Stones Cant You Hear Me Knocking, the riff-heavy Heart classic Barracuda, Janis Joplins Piece of My Heart and others.

Train drew much applause during their evening set on the main stage with covers of Led Zeppelins Going to California and Aerosmiths Dream On, and their own hits Meet Virginia and Drops of Jupiter.

But just as Friday belonged to Jeff Beck, Saturday belonged to John Mayer. An electric air of excitement built during the run-up to his arrival and performance, and wild applause greeted Mayers appearance onstage with Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan.

The youthful Mayer, a huge Fender fan himself, has largely shed his previous incarnation as an acoustic artist, more recently moving into the electric blues territory of his idols, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. Hence, much of his set came from the trios 2005 live album, TRY! As with Beck, Mayer let his Stratocaster guitarsincluding his signature modeldo most of the talking as he led Palladino and Jordan through an intense, adventurous 90-minute set, bringing the night and the festival to a fitting close.

looking upon this  list sideways, am reminded of college ART/drawing class for 2nd time today. My teacher rode my ass. We were assigned to choose an image & journal it from various angles. I chose steeples. She continually wanted to know WHY, but i had no answer at the time. Am thinking b/c, still not sure the answer or how to describe. The steeple in this word drawing reminds me --the angel Moroni stands upon the mormon temples. Has been awhile since studying this & there is article in Rolling Stone on Scientology that i need t read. Another art class story--When I was in the nude drawing class, as a mormon, I was concerned about whether or not it was 'right'. Went to church leaders for opinions. The men didn't know, but a woman told me they draw nudes at BYU. Well, during this time of ponderment, I'd also spoken w/ the prof. about my concerns. He came to me one day, after this class had been in session for weeks & says "I don't know what kind of power you have but in all my years teaching this class, I have never had a 'problem' finding models, til now." after hearing that they draw nudes at BYU, I released my hold/intention. on our 1st day drawing a nude man, the guy next to me says "just look at him like he is a piece of furniture." This reminds me of Lydia & I need to call her. She was completely fascinated w/ the nude drawing scenes in movie 'Titanic' & would watch it over & over.I'm trying to remember how old she was when video was released is great clue. Forgot to mention in other notes about an amazing drawing Clark made at very young age. It is the human head, divided down middle of brain. One side is female, one side is male.
re; teacher rode been awhile ) That is because she finally understands who you are When you were small, she wasn't able to focus her attention quite well enough b/c she was really busy w/ your brothers. Three boys & no daughters, come on Tis the gift of daughter-in-laws to aid,

..Come Sail Away
Written by Dennis DeYoung
Lead Vocals by Dennis DeYoung
I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on
I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on
A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Interpretation
Come Sail Away is about reaching for your dreams (not about UFOs and alien encounters). The angels and the aliens are figurative voices encouraging you to "come sail away" to wherever your dreams would take you.
Have a dream fulfilling week sweetheart/darlin'/hun,

Get Covered in Rain from The Indianapolis show from 04, LISTEN to his political rant in the middle of it....Then come back and say someone told John what to do. Honestly, Think about it. Here's a guy who said fuck you to his record company. I'm doin what I want. And now he's gonna turn around and let someone else tell him what to sing about? Doesn't make since.

Nice one John......Glad to finally hear you're getting to express some political opinions.
We ARE mostly a generation waiting for the world to change whilst screaming at our television sets!
I wouldn't normally watch FOX News but flicking through my channels in my Hong Kong hotel room this morning I saw the Dixie Chicks being slated by some Guy Smiley type for standing up against the current administration......he thought their opinions 'gimicky' and although Mr Smiley admited to being a country music fan (!!!$?!) he said he won't be buying their latest record and encouraged the viewing public to do the same!
Needless to stay I stood there in my bathrobe, yelled at him for a bit and switched off!
Yours,
Waiting for the world to change,

I'm gonna be honest.

I am a fucking huge mayer fan an idolize you and shit. Look at my blogs about Eddies Attic...but this ain't that great. People automatically think if its Mayer it's good and praise them because who you are and shit but these aren't that good. I see a lot of potential  and I can definetely see where this can go and it will be great but keep working on it. People, don't hate, I'm just being an honest, HUGE Mayer fan critic.

Love,
Taylor

Agree.  I don't know.  Someone's convinced him to get on a soapbox.  Remember there was this girl he talked about who was teaching him about global warming?...  I have no idea where you stand on all that stuff.  Aside from that, the lyrics did not really inspire.  They kind of whined.  Thanks for your honesty

Oh shit!  Now I feel seriously guilty as hell.  Oh well-- At least the lyrics were grist for somebody's mill.  Vive la freedom of speech and thought...so far.

I remember a John concert a couple of years ago in which someone threw a t-shirt onto the stage--seemingly expecting him to show the front of it.  John stared at the front of that t-shirt for a few seconds and then dismissed/rejected it.  He never showed it to us.  I somehow got the idea that that t-shirt had some kind of political message.  He made some kind of comment inferring that, and when he put that t-shirt down, I respected him sooo much.  Never forgot it.

Now, these new lyrics are like some long political logo on a t-shirt.

I always thought that if I ever became rich and famous I would use my position to be a mouthpiece for something I believed in--to influence people in the "right" way. So, I can't blame him/you.

Still, love, Valerie

Don't lose me, please.

Hey thanks for agreeing with me.
Everyone knows I am the JM fanatic, but someone had to stick up and actually show an opinion rather than read the title and jiz their pants because they LOOOVE jm. I myself LOOOVE jm aswell, but I also know what is genuine and what is not so great. Those lyrics don't seem all so jm and not all so poetic and original. i see the message and i see where its going but it could be put into better words. theyre about at my level right now and im 17 trying to be a better writer so i aint sayin they suck but i expect better if john is gonna record this.

Love,
Taylor

ps. some may actually be true with their opinions when u jizzed ur pants and loved them and that's cool. this is my opinion. dont get mad. one love.

John is an excellent musician, but he'll lose alot if he tries to go political. He can think whatever he wants in private or if he decides to really do his homework and become a true advocate that's fine too, but these thinly veiled references to politics are not going to fly. He doesn't need my permission or anyone's for that matter. There are enough bands with political loud-mouths in them (like Greenday), and we don't need to lose John Mayer to that type of mentality.

SO... Why do you listen to him?

Woah.. Woah.. Woah.... I don't see anything thinly veiled in:

"cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want"

That's a pretty strong statement...

You feel the way you want to about politics - but, he has a right to talk about what the world is talking about... If you don't want to listen to that, chances are you don't want to see the real world...

And, something tells me it's not the fact that this a political song that's got you going - it's possibly his slant on the issues?

Poor Mr. Mayer - he never gets to grow.. he never gets to see a need for change in the world around him.  This is the exact same mentality that gets people angry at him for not singing Wonderland at a blues concert..

And to you, Mr. Mayer - now I understand why you never wanted to discuss your political affiliations.  I'm sorry people in this world can't see that there are two sides to every issue or feel that, as an artist you can only have a view on certain aspects of society - and that politics is a no man's waste land filled with all sorts of trip wire and land mines.

It's suprising how often artists get it.. while the rest of us don't and should.

I think it's a great song - this is the third time I've said it - and I wouldn't say so if I didn't think otherwise.

I feel the faulty thinking lies in believing there are only two political ways.  The world is not black or white.  There are many varieties of thinking and it's a shame that everything is so bipartisan.  In my opinion, that is what's wrong with the American political system today.  You have extreme opposites and there is little to no alternative.  Too many political agendas are stuffed into the two parties.  The middle ground gets shuffled around, and inevitably it becomes lost.  What's your average American supposed to do?

EVERYONE REMAIN CALM!!!!!

John Mayer is not forcing his politics on anyone. Being a successful musician or "star" does not mean he forfeits his right to an opinion...Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one! And by the way, John is an ARTIST, not your EMPLOYEE.

You said it best yourself, Margaret...

"He doesn't need my permission or anyone's for that matter."

AMEN.

If he has a view let him HAVE his view and stop trying to overanalyze his music, his lyrics, why he does what he does, why he posts whatever he posts, etc.

HE IS AN ARTIST, and if he wants to write a song about the state of the world, and if he wants to write the blues, LET HIM. If you don't like what he has to say then guess what.... You don't have to listen.

I'm glad he wrote the song and for whatever reason he wrote it, that is his right AS an artist.

I can't believe you people took me out of my happy place and made me get serious for a minute. WOOOOOOOOOSSSAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Heather, breathe baby breathe.

"to rise above and beat it"..?

Why would you quote Michael Jackson in what is a seemingly serious subject matter?

Great Lyrics but, the words "don't hold your breath" keep circulating in my mind. If we keep waitng for the world to change it never will. We may not be able to make huge differences across the breadth of the earth, but we can make differences in the little patch of ground where we live and work and go to school.  The old saying goes something like this "the journey of a thousand miles, begins with just one step.". Start with prayer, then let God guide you there. Peace!

What a joy to wake up to new John Mayer lyrics, delivered by the Big Dog himself! Hard evidence of a growing political conscience that I am sure has existed for some time...Thoughtful, timely words on a subject that affects us all...Thanks, John.

"and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got
cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want"

Anyone else instantly think of  Fox News? aka Cheney News Network...

All this, and Baseball Opening Day, too!! It's gonna be a good day...

Wow. I'm commenting on John Mayer's blog...COOL! Anyway, you person up there above me, you are full of snot. Good God. You are probably one of two people who actually support this quagmire in Iraq. By the way, if they put it on the news and it's inccorect, it can be labled as SLANDER AND THEY CAN BE SUED YOU MORON! Anyway, who told you that the media was biased, Rush Limbaugh? That is bias, not CNN.

Anyway, I doubt that you actually read these things John Mayer; however, I wish to inform you, that I think you are quite possibly one of the greatest songwriters of this generation. They are methodical, most of them, and serve a purpose. I agree with this song, but you disapoint me when it comes to quality...It's no "Man on the Side."

No Offense.
