Current mood:  happy
I got an email this morning from www.avaaz.org explaining they are putting a flood of messages to Obama from around the world on a giant wall in Washington DC. They will go up in the next 48hrs to make the most of this historic unifying event. If you have a minute, perhaps you'd like to take a look at their website and everything going on.

This is what I wrote :

IT'S A NEW DAWN, IT'S A NEW DAY, IT'S A NEW LIFE FOR EVERYONE.
AND WE'RE FEELING GOOD!

Last night was a momentous occasion for America and the world. President Barack Obama, you are the first inspiring, humanitarian leader I've had the pleasure of seeing and believing in my lifetime. I am THRILLED at your appointment.

I am a 33yr old British citizen (Wales), residing in Los Angeles and felt honored to be a part of your country last night. I was not on the planet to support Martin Luther King and Gandhi but I feel their presence in you. I look forward to the change you will initiate, and seeing it through to completion. THANK YOU for taking on this vital role in such thorny times, and most importantly, for showing everyone the seemingly impossible is possible, you are an embodiment of that.

The tasks at hand are mighty, but we can get the world back on track together. We can bridge the divides; we can love one another as brothers and sisters, no matter what color, race, nationality, or creed. I know this is possible.

Your message is clear, and I for one concur and join you in this quest.

Happy Wednesday 5th November 2008 Mr. President.

All my love and support,
Jem

The atmosphere here is different today.
It is beautiful, people are happy, friendly and hopeful, we are united.

Obama's election has brought great hope to the world for the first time in a long time. America has shown the world they want change and one man has shown what can be achieved with faith, will and perseverance. Imagine what can be done if we all help effect change together with right action, the scale could be a millionfold.

The next phase is not going to be unproblematic, it is an overwhelming job Obama has undertaken, especially now we are all looking to him to fix everything, the pressure is great. But that's why he was elected. He's intelligent, determined, sharp, humorous, trusted, capable, and most importantly he has a heart. He will listen to the people, I believe that. It is likely to take baby steps until we see any real change, but if we are patient, supportive, have faith, and believe, we will see results.

This election is an incredible and necessary start for the next chapter, but as Avaaz.org says, the sharks are already starting to circle. Obama can't do it all alone. We have to stay involved, have to care, and he needs to continue to know what the people want. Furthermore, we must all do our share to help the world in any way we can.

It might seem a little crass but it's not unlike Star Wars, with the force and the dark side always looming. It is time to use the force everyone!

As you can tell I'm feeling incredibly passionate and enthused right now!
For the first time in my life there is an international figure promoting unity and peace. I will be watching this space.

To the future…
Jem x

There seems to be a brighter future. There were alot of positive souls out there voting. I also beleive that the baby steps will be so small at first, he has soo many endings to complete before he can start making his own changes. but your right there was a change in the world, i didn't watch the polls or the tv, but the next morning there was the unexplainable peace and then i found out he had won. its something.

Not sure on all three counts, but I _am_ positive that we locked the majority of Them in a proverbial closet with this one!

You are stupid. All the democrats will do is raise taxes and cause things to be more expensive in an already horrible time. ALL these people who are praising B.O. should look at his policies, voting record, experience. Go back and look at how much they paid in taxes the last time dems were in office. ANYONE can stand up and make promises, it takes a REAL hero to stand by them. He has never, so lets see if he can "close the deal," now.

I AGREE!!!! I'm counting down the days until I can vote against him again!

A few things this election has proved:

1. The media can literally get someone elected;
2. Any idiot without REAL experience can run for president, and win;
3. People are willing to cut off their noses, just to spite their faces (i.e. voting for someone with little to no experience, voting for someone simply because Bush is a Republican, and they don't want another Republican in office, even if it means things will be even MORE screwed up).

51% of America made a grand mistake, and yes, history has been made, but at what cost?

"Angie Dickinson" wow I can't believe your childish response.

"Any idiot without REAL experience can run for president, and win".

I wonder what would be said had the McPalin party won? Think before posting in someone's blog and get the facts as snowgirl said. Wow ONLY 51% of the U.S. voted for Obama? What country did you imaginary vote from?

"uniting our nation"

Funny... you're pointing fingers at the Republican party but also say the Democrats are "uniting the nation". I didn't realize that electing a President with the most liberal agenda ever is "uniting" an entire nation.

For the record, I don't subscribe to any party and Brenda never said anything about Fox News. Way to go with the assumptions but I wouldn't expect anything less.

Dear Jem,

For a 33-year-old artist, I'm amazed at how what you've written is so simplistic and childish.

But it's not new. Bet you remember these:
"All we need is love"
"Peace, love, and understanding"
Meaningless feel-good garbage, garbage that results in not one life saved, not one mouth fed.

What you wrote is embarrassingly devoid of wisdom or understanding.
And you demonstrate that you understand little of international affairs.

Most notably, you disrespect HUNDREDS of leaders worldwide when you write,
"For the first time in my life there is an international figure promoting unity and peace."

Virtually every international figure promotes unity and peace--by promote you mean "speak of," because all Obama has ever done is talk about these things, and everyone talks about these things ad naseum. All I've seen Obama DO is work tirelessly to promote himself into greater positions of power. Ironically, you fail to realize that's where most big problems in the world come from--people trying to gain more power for themselves.

What's happening in Congo right now, while you are talking about all this unity and harmony? Do you even know? What has been going on in Darfur for over 6 years? What's the solution to that? Should we all sit around and sing feel-good songs, and the evil Jangaweed will feel all special and stop killing, raping, and terrorizing? I suppose this is all Bush's fault too, right? You know, that evil guy who is the ONLY WORLD LEADER to call Darfur a Genocide!

Of course, the ONLY solution to these situations--as in EVERY situation where evil asserts itself by force--is by meeting force with force, by sending people who don't value life to the afterlife. By war.
Peace has never--and I do mean NEVER--come from anything but STRENGTH. Period. Throughout ALL OF HISTORY.
Think about it: That's why every part of the world has police.
Every part of the world has a military.
Because if they didn't, lawlessness, death, and destruction would reign.
And EVERYWHERE that has a breakdown in Police and/or Military, this is exactly what happens.

Do you know why this doesn't happen in your country?
Because the United States of America has sworn to protect your country--along with many, many more we guarantee. Should you ever be attacked, an attack on one is an attack on all. That's NATO. Without the guarantee that America would defend you, you would be speaking Russian. This is not an oversimplification. Not a joke.

Jem, how did the Russian president respond to Obama's election on Wednesday? Here's a hint: it was a bit different than how you did. Maybe you should read about it.

So I'm most disturbed by your overall lack of understanding of the human animal.
And as an artist, not understanding the human animal and its condition--not understanding yourself--is shameful.

And before you write me off as "good-with-words" debater who hates and doesn't love and knows nothing of art or beauty or the amazingly-beautiful side of humanity, you might just look at my profile, at my photography, or listen to my songwriting. You might find that I don't fit very neatly into your prejudices.

In true love--not the feel-good kind,
Silence Your Heart

Especially during times of duplicity, it is best to speak simply. There are many wonderful words in the English dictionary, but sometimes they get in the way of true meaning. Too often, we find ourselves thrown amidst words with so little meaning, and for decades politicians have been notorious for this behavior, only for comeuppance to rear her karmic head when people demanded results. Obama is held responsible for his words just like every other politician, but he must be given a chance to thrive. One cannot start at the very top and expect success instantaneously. He may be the best thing to happen to the U.S. or he may end up being just another one of those "good-with-words debaters" like yourself. The future has yet to be told. On a separate vein, who is to say that Jem's ideal of "love" is any less worthy than an individual who insists upon utilizing the nomenclature "Silence Your Heart"? And truly, how dare this individual claim to know the human animal so much more fully than another artist, let alone another "human animal" when the term "artist" is so subjective to begin with? Subjectively speaking, "Silence Your Heart", your artwork is paltry and generic, and your music is cacophonous to my ears. I would rather you just "silenced your mouth" and put your point-and-shoot camera to better use with Myspace-esque mirrored self-portraits--they're of the same caliber.

My kudos go to Jem for speaking so simply, so concisely, and so eloquently, much like her music.

Some people wrote some truly beautiful things here. I thought your blog was inspiring. Especially since it comes from a non citizen who is living as a guest in our Country. It makes me proud to know that the world has recognized our hope, ambition, and the CHANGE that we have made this week. Now is not the time to bicker and fight. As Obama once said in one of his many awe inspiring speeches "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America."
Divided we fail.

Hear, Hear! Well put Jem! You have accurately summed up what I believe most every American was feeling both at the announcement of his success, and even more so (or at least for me) the morning after- it was as if a veil had lifted, weight had been taken off of my shoulders, the sun was shining the birds were singing, God is in His Heaven and all is right with the World! (...and other such cliche's ;) lol) But seriously, myself and countless others are looking forward to this new Dawn and here's to us, as a country! America has spoken! and Moreover, the World is finally listening. :)

To all the naysayers and the people who are reading these comments that didn't vote for Obama (whatever your reasons may be- hopefully not racially motivated), maybe you should actually do some research.... I have. I wanted to give myself a crash course in politics and see where the officials stand before I cast my ballot this past Tuesday, and I did. After actually doing a bit of research (with an open mind), taking into consideration all the issues at hand and not just the ones that mean the most to me personally, weighing the pros and cons, etc., etc., I voted for whom I thought would be the best candidate- Obama. Now I understand this to be up for interpretation naturally. Without diversity what would this country be like? Boring, to say the least. But I recommend you do your OWN research, and not parroting what others have told you without verifying the information. Not from anyone's personal or promotional website either, and even news channel's websites can lean a particular way. One of the many resources available is one I consulted, www.ontheissues.org. I think if you check out this site, you'll see where they really stand, what they say versus what they do, and how often (if any!) that it matches up. People quoting one thing or another for or against certain politicians should actually know what they're talking about before they do so. (You know who you are...)

So sad. Here i thought Jem was mostly non-partisan, non-polemic. This NEW puppet administration was funded by the same anglo-dominant money interests (the real "THEY") that funded the last mess of bought-and-paid-for presidents. The scheme today is to enthrone a minority president so that they can infer the racism card everytime someone will rightfully criticize policy in the future, just wait and see.
It's no different than the non-denominational, multinational, investment banksters that hide behind the convenient antisemetism card, even though most of them are not even Jewish. It's smoke and mirrors people. This "new day" can only bring us more subtle media manufactured racism and make it that much harder to speak the honest truth. Democrats/Republicans = phooey; two wings of the same bird of prey, two treads of the same tank, two flags of the same malevolent flagbearer. What a shame people get sucked into this delusional lesser of evils game. What a total bummer that Jem now cheerleads it. Erg!!

We will all just have to see if things get better, hopefully they will.
