Hello my MySpace friends,
Rhett Miller here. I haven't written in a while. I've been busy. My wife and I had our second kid, a beautiful little girl named Soleil Ahnece Miller.
I took a little over a month off to be with the family. It was awesome - though I slept very little.
Now that the paternity leave is over, it's back to the job of promoting my new album The Believer which came out three months ago. I love the record and am wildly proud of it. I wish I could play it for everybody in the world. I know that quite a few of them would love it the way I love my favorite albums. While it's easy to reach people these days (digitally at least), the level of noise in our culture makes it hard to be heard.
Lord knows I've tried. To be heard that is. I've gone on TV. I've toured the country (with my ridiculously awesome new band The Believers (Tommy, Greg and Angela - oh my god, I am a lucky man to have hooked up with these future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers)). I've done hundreds of hours of interviews and photo shoots. Hell, I've even gone Hollywood. My other (also kick-ass) band Old 97's features prominently in the new hit movie The Breakup - yes, that IS me in the pink shirt making Jennifer Aniston cry with my heartfelt declarations of love's non-existence. But in the end, I just have to hope that this new record that I love so much rises up and connects with as many people as possible.
I don't think of the music business as a game I have to win so much as a test I must endure in order to reach people.
All this is to say, I need your help. If you like The Believer, tell people about it. Forward them a link, email them an mp3, hold the phone up to your speaker. I have learned the hard way that you can't count on record labels to do ANYTHING. All you can do is wake up every morning and try to make the day count.
To that end, I am currently back on tour in the US. I'm in Charlotte, NC tonight. Tomorrow (June 21st) my band and I will be in Asheville, NC. Then Knoxville, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Charleston. The real tour info is available on my website or on Pollstar - I never know where I'm going next. But I promise that I'll keep going. US dates, Japan dates (I'll be doing the UDO Festival in July), and even UK dates.
Which reminds me: whenever possible I will be coming out to the merch booth after the show to meet and greet the folks... You. C'mon out.
I have added an Old 97's tune "Melt Show" to my player. It's featured in The Break Up along with us. There's a sweet moment in the film where this song segues into a Jon Brion score piece that made me miss that guy a lot.
Oh yeah... thanks for all the great pictures you guys posted. I had no idea the label was running a contest (much less sending out a bulletin using my MySpace identity - sorry), but it was nice to see the excitement and the level of participation. You guys are very cool.
I'll see you soon. yrs, Rhett
