Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, June 21, 2006
Hello my MySpace friends,

Rhett Miller here. I haven't written in a while. I've been busy. My wife and I had our second kid, a beautiful little girl named Soleil Ahnece Miller.

I took a little over a month off to be with the family. It was awesome - though I slept very little.

Now that the paternity leave is over, it's back to the job of promoting my new album The Believer which came out three months ago. I love the record and am wildly proud of it. I wish I could play it for everybody in the world. I know that quite a few of them would love it the way I love my favorite albums. While it's easy to reach people these days (digitally at least), the level of noise in our culture makes it hard to be heard.

Lord knows I've tried. To be heard that is. I've gone on TV. I've toured the country (with my ridiculously awesome new band The Believers (Tommy, Greg and Angela - oh my god, I am a lucky man to have hooked up with these future Rock and Roll Hall of Famers)). I've done hundreds of hours of interviews and photo shoots. Hell, I've even gone Hollywood. My other (also kick-ass) band Old 97's features prominently in the new hit movie The Breakup - yes, that IS me in the pink shirt making Jennifer Aniston cry with my heartfelt declarations of love's non-existence. But in the end, I just have to hope that this new record that I love so much rises up and connects with as many people as possible.

I don't think of the music business as a game I have to win so much as a test I must endure in order to reach people.

All this is to say, I need your help. If you like The Believer, tell people about it. Forward them a link, email them an mp3, hold the phone up to your speaker. I have learned the hard way that you can't count on record labels to do ANYTHING. All you can do is wake up every morning and try to make the day count.

To that end, I am currently back on tour in the US. I'm in Charlotte, NC tonight. Tomorrow (June 21st) my band and I will be in Asheville, NC. Then Knoxville, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Charleston. The real tour info is available on my website or on Pollstar - I never know where I'm going next. But I promise that I'll keep going. US dates, Japan dates (I'll be doing the UDO Festival in July), and even UK dates.

Which reminds me: whenever possible I will be coming out to the merch booth after the show to meet and greet the folks... You. C'mon out.

I have added an Old 97's tune "Melt Show" to my player. It's featured in The Break Up along with us. There's a sweet moment in the film where this song segues into a Jon Brion score piece that made me miss that guy a lot.

Oh yeah... thanks for all the great pictures you guys posted. I had no idea the label was running a contest (much less sending out a bulletin using my MySpace identity - sorry), but it was nice to see the excitement and the level of participation. You guys are very cool.

I'll see you soon.
yrs,
Rhett

Rhett,

I have to be honest, I really never heard of you until I was on The Break Up set. You guys were awesome. It is funny you never really hear of those cool bands unless it is word of mouth. I still have not seen The Break Up yet. Have you? Also, congratulations on your daughter Soleil! Take care dude! Hope to see you in Chicago again soon!

Omg!  I just downloaded my moms CD of the Instigator onto my iPod and I am obsessed!  I always liked the CD when my mom played it, but now I absolutely LOVE it.  I also listen to the Old 97's a lot, which are AMAZING!  Me and my mom went out and got your new CD the day it came out.  Yup, we're all obsessed.  I even went to Tower with my family when you played in Philly and saw you, and on the top of our piano is the picture you took with my older sister.  I love your music SO much!  Keep up the amazing work!

xoxo

Hey Rhett, it's great to read a post from you.  Congrats on your new baby daughter...how cool.  I've been sending lots of folks to iTunes to check out The Believer.  So far, they've all loved it and they're playing it loudly!  Kinda sucks that you didn't know about the photo contest (even though I was the GRAND PRIZE WINNER!)  I'm looking forward to the show in Cleveland this weekend....I've been counting down the days since the tickets went on sale :)  Keep rockin' and travel safely.

Cheers-

Tracy

Tracy,

Have people go to Napster and Rhapsody as well. Rhett has an acoustic album on each. Yes, you can put those on your iPod. lol

My dearest Rhett Miller,

My mom (whom I have dragged to your shows - specifically one in Houston at Fitzgerald's where she was thrilled to get a picture taken with you and also told you that you needed to eat) was the one that told me that you were in the film.  Kudos!  She was so giddy she could hardly contain herself in the theatre -so you have a HUGE 70 year old fan.  Isn't that something?  You're reaching more people than you know.  Have fun.  Hope to see you soon - and The Believer is wonderful.

Peace,
Maria

Rhett - I love the record, too. And it keeps revealing months later. Can't wait to see you in Knoxville in a couple nights. I'll be there on business, and you're performing. Serendipity! But hoping some northern New England dates are in your future!!
And congrats on your most recent creation

First saw you opening for Neil Finn in MN and then again in Las Vegas at Paris summer series. Got the Instigator because of it and turned on several friends.
All that touring does get the word out and hopefully stories like mine (and a nice payday) make it worthwhile.
Going to get the new CD next week, and hope it stays in the CD player as long as the Instigator has.
Congrats on your new little one.

You and the boys were truely missed at Bonnaroo! We tried to have fun anyway!

Come to Fla!

I'm always spreading the gospel according to Rhett Miller.

Keep those kids coming. Someone has to rock the future.

Enjoy yourself....

Hey Rhett,

I went to the show in Central Park last weekend and brought my 9-yo son with me. Dude, it was dynamite. I'm telling all my friends about you and the '97's even though we're all hard-core NYers, the alt-country format is breaking through.

WFUV in the Bronx has a lot to do with the way that new music is heard around here and (although I'm not a member) I should really join.

I'm finding that I can really connect to my 3 kids through your music (and, oddly enough AC/DC too). God bless your family and I hope to see you again soon!

Best,
Jim

Saw The Break Up last night ... to see "my Rhett" as I refer to you often, since I am your champion in these here parts. You're very tall. I'll keep watching for you to hit Nashville so I can give ya a big ole Southern bear hug. "...unless you Come Around"

We saw The Beakup last weekend--finally, I always have to wait awhile to go see a movie in the theater, so there's less people there to get in a fight with. Anyway, the breakup didn't suck like I heard it did, but it would have been quite a bit better if they'd let you all play a little longer. The whole reason we went to see the movie was really just to see the Old 97's. Great job, you guys rocked! Get the boys back together again soon and come to see us somewhere in Missouri, I won't miss it!

just wanted to say that im a very big fan, i downloaded (stole!) the song "nervous heart" quite randomly online, loved it, then one day while browsing in a book store while on vacation i saw the instigator, bought it, listened to it on the way home, LOVED it, shared it with my best friend who then shared it with others. i dont know if you read these comments but rest assured i will definitely be buying your new album...and i pretty much never buy cds, so... yay.

Rhett -

Congratultions on the birth of your daughter. Children are a wonder.

I will be on the Blues Cruise in NY on August 23. Going to see you live just makes me think of performing with you at Dave's Art Pawn Shop in Deep Ellum in Dallas Texas.

Who would recoginze me with the goatee? The web provides pics for all. I recently heard a great interview you did with WFUV in NYC. I've been running an ipod playlist of your material to create the mind set for the blues cruise.

Rhett...

Congrats on the new little one.  Babies are fun, huh?!  (My husband and I met you in Seattle this last spring.  I was the pregnant lady who was due any day!!  We asked you  for suggestions for a name for our little guy...remember?)

I promise, I am trying so hard to get more people on the "Rhett Miller/Old 97's band wagon".  Seriously, I'm a fan and I talk you up to everyone I know.

Check out my blog, www.holaisabel.com.  I've talked about you more than once.  Especially during that weekend in March when you were in Seattle.

Keep up the good work.
