hi hi everybody! so i realize my last blog had a little bit of a sad edge to it... i was feeling pretty strange at that point. however, i'm doing much better now! it's hot again (and when i say hot, i mean that if one were to stand in the sun on a metal plate, one would melt like a stick of butter in no time at all). we're in atlanta, just did a show in the park for an absolutely wonderful audience. peachy peaches, i love atlanta. currently a little confused on time.. i played a few songs at a lovely birthday party last night (i think it was last night?) and then hopped on the plane overnight to get here. disoriented, but all is good.
i had the most spectacular dream last night (two nights ago? last night i didn't dream at all, i just . i dreamt i was at some sort of university (a very very old one). i walked through the library and found an old and strange piano. it had two tiers, like an organ, and the keys were in a different order than the typical structure. each key was labeled, and there was an H note. i couldn't play it very well, but i wanted to learn so badly. it sounded heavenly. as i was sitting there, trying to work it out, the camera in my head lifted high to the ceiling (so i was watching myself play) and descended upon a man in a powdered wig with a pen and a piece of paper. he was writing furiously. suddenly, he and i and a few other young people i didn't know were walking across the greenest grass ever and up a hill. the university sprawled out in front of us. this man, who i believe was some incredibly revered composer from another time, like beethoven or mozart, was auditioning us for a show he was putting together. the first girl was a ballet dancer. she was dressed in street clothes but when she danced, she was like a gazelle. this man took me away from the crowd and brought me to a children's cafeteria. all the chairs were very small and it was terribly noisy. there, in front of me, was a child sized piano. he told me to play. i sat down on one of the little chairs and then i woke up. what a nice dream.
i've really been working on beating the blues. positivity is the name of the game. my spirits shift to the melancholic side of things all too easily, so i'm making a conscious effort to think happy thoughts and smile at strangers even more than usual. here are some things that make me happy. listing them makes me happy. what makes you happy?
me-
cranberries and apples in salads (or sandwiches, yummy with turkey)
the sight of a rabbit hopping away in a field, its little tail bopping up and down
walking around any sort of body of water (so calming)
tea dates with friends
whimsical art (odd pieces with birds, squirrels, deer, owls, children's illustrations, etc)
reading a good book on a lawn chair in the (not too roasting) sun
riding my bike!
my sweet little dog, gosh he's cute.. such a pure, open, gorgeous little heart he has.
good movies (i like woody allen films, the older ones, classic films from the 70s and 80s like gregory's girl and pretty in pink, indies, romantic comedies, foreign films, planet earth, etc)
kisses
hugs
laughter
watching babies figure things out
playing music (duh)
listening to good music (currently: belle and sebastian, camera obscura, death cab, bright eyes, ray lamontagne, kings of convenience, the new coldplay, the new sigur ros, the decemberists, johnny cash, the mamas and papas, nick drake, etc.)
fresh flowers
fresh fruit. mangos, papayas, apples (as previously mentioned), apricots, green grapes (oh yes!), honeydew melon... bananas... etc.
watching people rock out in their cars to music, seeing couples in love, watching elderly couples sit together in parks...

if you've got the blues, don't fret, it happens to the best of us. make a list of the things that make you happy, maybe. and then go do some of them.

wishing you joy, love and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,
ali

Wow you stay busy, busy filling others with your music and spirit :) Thank you for sharing your dream...how awesome is that?! You were being tought by a great musician I think, still in a childs chair but, I think you don't give yourself enough credit if the small chair was where you think you are musically because your music is amazing. However, if that small chair was your youth then that is a beautiful thing...maybe the key is to keep that youth of heart and make sure it fills your music up. Because isn't that where a lot of the joy is you are seeking?
1. a childs laughter
2. a sunny day
3. hot coffee and conversation
4. the sounds of birds
5. a gentle breeze
6. friends and family
7. a good comedy
8..........
Stay happy Ali! Much Love, Ang

Beautiful

A red sunset with purple highlights and the pale new moon,
The smell of the sea and its shimmer and breeze,
The first warm day of summer in London in June,
The golden brown carpet laid by autumnal trees.

Laughing at dinner with old friends until late,
Lifting your child watching it wriggle and kick,
Singing Cai Sara Sara to your parents questioning fate,
Offering your lover choices and predicting their pick.

Walking on the beach feeling the sand in your toes,
Rubbing the belly of a bronze Buddah in a temple in Bali,
Swinging back and forth on a coconut tree hammock as you doze,
Floating on a raft in a river in a rainforest valley.

Finding a treasured item you thought had been lost,
Achieving a long standing goal just in the nick of time,
Seeing what you entered the store for was marked at half the usual cost,
Writing a casual sentance and finding yourself speaking in rhyme.

Looking in your lovers eyes and knowing you are home,
Being forever lost in this song as you know the words are true,
Many things are valuable but as for priceless beauty stands alone,
You create beauty and nothing is more beautiful than you.

That was an amazing dream. Thank you for sharing, Alison.

What makes me happy... Anything. Nothing. Everything. Depends on my mood.

Running. Successfully. Consistently.

Dreams. Lucid dreams.

Sunny days. Cloudy days.

Starry, moonlit nights.

An empty beach.

Earl Grey and green tea (not mixed together, though).

You, sometimes.

Dark chocolate.

Fresh, organic fruit (bananas, oranges, green or red apples, green and red grapes, pears, etc.; but no strawberries).

Smiles, always.

Kisses, often.

Hugs, many.

Laughing, together.

Playing board games (Risk, LOTR Risk, Stratego, etc.) with good friends.

Music.

Silence.

Nature.

California.

Photography. Capturing a good picture.

Saving the world. Defending the innocent from the greedy and the corrupt. Verbally slaying conservatives with Truth.

A clean environment, comfortable surroundings.

Morning sex. Wake-up-middle-of-the-night sex.

A girlfriend I can call 'Home'.

What makes me happy? Well, these things amongst others:

the smells and aroma after a downpour of summer rain;
walking in the evening sunshine;
cooking a meal for friends;
visiting a museum or an art gallery with friends;
interrupting my work to sit back and listen to music;
listening to live music;
playing with dogs;
walking on the shore of a lake or by the ocean;
being very still in an ancient space.

Wonderful to hear of your fun time in Atlanta!

What makes me happy at this very moment is hearing how happy you are!

It uplifts me to know someone else is enjoying the simple things in life.

I can hardly wait for the release of your book someday; you have a way with words that magically takes one to far away places they never want to come back from!

Nite, Ali. Many more sweet dreams will come your way, I'm sure of it.

hugs,
Mary

It is easy to get disoriented when you are hitting so many little spots all the time, and the big crowds. It is the beauty of your voice that makes you who you are. But in my experience, and all the travelling I have done with my husband, the memories will come back again and again of the little precious moments, all your life. So make every day count, which it looks like you are. There are a lot of people out there who respect you for what you do. i know it can be tough at times. But most of the time, I am sure it is fun. You are still young. When are you coming to Nashville? See Ya, Diane

I have to say though what has been making me happier recently is listening to your gorgeous album! It never fails to be a smile where a frown used to be!!

Oh and my Dogs and cats make me happy too. No matter what they are there, for the good and the bad!!!

I hope your peanut Butter and Jelly (I believe it would be jam in the UK) sandwiches are bringing you some joy!!!!

This was great! I am glad that you got over your blues-you reminded me of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast st Tiffany's whenever she got the "Mean Reds"...lol sorry i'm a classic movie freak.

okay so i've decided to take your advice and make a list:
-Writing.
-Dancing in the rain
-Dancing in the sunshine
...actually just dancing period.
-red hair (and hair dye!)..like mine-and yours! yay!
-putting a "Yay! :)" on everything.
-my niece and nephew (they are 2 and 5)
-laughing so hard that you start crying-and by that time you've forgotten what you are laughing at so that just makes you laugh even more!
-a baby's laugh
-my dogs with their unconditional love
-lying outside on a sunny day in a hammack reading
-being with friends
-being in a mellow type of mood where i listen to great music-ofcourse yours ALWAYS comes up first..lol
-friends and family are a must
-walking around fields, parks, and lakes
-going to art museums
-shopping.
-the movies Breakfast at Tiffany's, Cassablanca, Funny Face, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sweet Home Alabama, Sixteen Candles, Elizabethtown, In Bruges,..well you get the point..lol

and reading your blogs..knowing that you take the time to write and post them for us..so thankyou very much for that!

Intricate dream! My interpretation in a nutshell: Your wonder and awe of music leaves you feeling like an underachiever, maybe even a bit inadequate, and you fear being boxed in to a life of entertaining the rat race. But, hey, what do I know?!?

If you start feeling the blues, play some blues. Nothing cleanses the soul of sadness better than telling a story about what's ailing your heart with a song. When I get the blues, I just have to look at your dimples when you smile, and I'm good for a while...

UUU! I use a website called HyperDictionary.com They have dream dictionaries. I looked up yours and wanted to share it. It seems like it could relate to you, but I don't know.

Dreaming that you are in school means feelings of inadequacy and childhood insecurities that have never been resolved. It may relate to anxieties about performance and abilities. You may also be going through a "spiritual learning" experience. If you are still in school and dream about school, then it will naturally serve as a backdrop to your dream world. Alternatively, a dream that takes place in school may be a metaphor for the lessons that you are learning from your waking life.
Seeing an old man in your dream, represents wisdom or forgiveness.
Dreaming that you are playing a piano indicates your quest for harmony in your life. Consider where the piano is placed as a clue as to what aspect of you life needs accordance. Dreaming that the piano needs to be tuned indicates some aspect of your life is in discord. You need to pay more attention to some situation. You may also need to repair or devote some more time toward a relationship, family duties, project, or other situation.

Hope this helps.

That dream has some amazing images! Hang onto those. Sounds like it would make a killer music video!!!

Any time I'm a little down, I like to pick up The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It doesn't always help, but it does a lot of the time. You're a brilliantly gifted musician, and with genius always comes the blues... hell... Van Gogh was so out of whack, he cut off his own ear! The Universe has to balance, and so you can't be amazing without those spells of black and blue.

Always your devoted fan!

Wow, I swear all of the things that you listed in your little list of happiness are all in my own. lol, well except for the one about your dog, though I don't know him, I'm sure he is splendid. So for that, substitute my own dog, and that is pretty much my list as well. I never really see people rocking out in their cars to music, probably because it is always me doing the rocking out. :) I also have a terrible tendancy to turn melancholy far too easily, but like you said trying to stay positive is the best way around it. Well good luck beating your blues, fighting the extreme heat, and finding out what time it is.

I think all of our prone to get a little bluesy now and then. It is just how we are able to handle that time that is important. Hope you have a cool hot summer and I will try to stay out of the blues myself. Keep on being real and keep the music coming. By the way, your dream sounds like the makings of an awesome song. Back when my dog was still alive, it made me happy when he'd growl as he ate his food, even if no other animals or people were around. I could put my face right down by his bowl, though, and he'd just whimper excitedly, as if saying: "Okay, I would share this with you, because you're my bestest BFF, but I wouldn't share this with, say, a cat, or one of them durned groundhogs. I mean, if a cat came over here, I'd just have to kill it. Hey, it's not like I haven't marked this territory...."

Other things: the first snow of every year, even if it's just a few barely-there flurries; the smell of coffee grounds; late-night writing when I'm really in the groove; Jack Handey books; poems by James Wright, Galway Kinnell and Charles Simic; lonely all-night doughnut shops and the idea of never dying.

Oh, I imagine watching babies NOT figure things out probably makes you pretty happy too, huh?

Miss Sudol.....

you've made my day.

I received bad news from an emergency room visit and am now having to make decisions I never ever thought I'd have to make.

The sad thing is they affect more than just myself, they affect my two roommates whom I love dearly.

Our healthcare system in America is not too fair for the middle class (if we even have a middle class anymore) and I am now in intense pain and the struggles I am going to experience aren't going to make healing any easier.

I make too much money and I can't get assistance.

I make too little money and I can't pay my rent.

It's such a double edged sword. :(

But I would like to thank you first for making such beautiful music for me to listen to while I lay in my bed and for posting this blog.

I am now going to make a list of things that make me happy as well.

All the best,

Jenny Neal

Another wonderful blog...

Thanks for sharing that dream...very interesting and unique!

You're absolutely right about positivity. It's way too easy to focus on all the crap going on in the world. We need to always make the choice to focus on the good and be happy each and everyday!

Some of the things that make me happy..
God
family
A Fine Frenzy
Alison Sudol
Ali's amazing blogs
watching movies
reading good books
the internet
the outdoors

well...you get the idea :)

Your list is great...I love what a positive person you are! Also, thanks for listing those films too; Pretty in Pink + Gregory's Girl are on their way to my netflix queue!

My list:

listening to good music (yours, The Rocket Summer, Coldplay, Death Cab, Postal Service, classical, sometimes just totally rocking out to something hardcore is good too)
playing kids' games with old friends
getting lost in a good book
making up a crazy recipe
ice skating
snow
fresh fruit, especially apples, strawberries, and bananas
Cuddly animals
Falling asleep on the phone at 2 in the morning
Painting/doodling mindlessly
Learning to play an instrument, especially piano

Thanks for the idea! I feel much better now. :D

Yea we wouldn't be human if we didn't get bluesy sometimes...and artists are known to be more in touch with that side of themselves soooo...
What makes me happy is pretty much the same as you except here are a couple more to add to the list...
Pretty white cup-cakes with buttercream frosting and pink roses....
Listening to Jeff Buckley anything.....(so in love am I!)
playing my guitar...learning a new song or writing one. Especially one that you can really feel the magic in...
Any kind of climbing vine with flowers....such as climbing roses!
vintage tea cups....
meandering through pretty antique shops...my favorite so far are the ones in Agoura...I always find something amazing...
thrift shopping and finding something totally fabulous for next to nothing...
painting with oil paints...
any kind of gardening....
putting my hair up really pretty and feeling sooooo girlie....
finding a raspberry bush and picking fresh, plump berries...eating them!
baking bread...it makes home smell heavenly
winks from cute boys.......

Hey Ali, I'm glad you're kicking those blues in the behind.
Your cheery disposition reminds me of a favorite song by a favorite group of english comedians...
Always look on the bright side of life.
And F'ing A they are right.

I hope your cheerios are good, your bananas are sweet (but not too sweet) and your peanuts are buttered.

By the way, we should hang out sometime. Been a long time
