ok, i just read a news article (several, actually) which made me re-think a statement i made in my last blog. i said that i'd started eating meat again.. however, i've now heard that the UN is asking people to cut down on meat consumption, as the amount of greenhouse gases produced by meat production is enormous. so, while i'll allow myself the occasional steak taco, i'm going to stick with mostly fish and tofu.... fish tacos are yummy too!

guardian uk article

also, here's a link to a site i found where you can help with global warming.. because chanting "drill, baby, drill" just doesn't seem right... we can solve the climate crisis

and one more thing, here's the wonderful dave letterman being amazingly funny on the subject. i think something can actually be done about it, but his passion is admirable. i'm going to go out and buy this book: dave letterman "we are dead meat"

i don't mean to rant and rave, but this is very much on my mind. i love you all and hope you're having a marvelous day!

I registered months ago for the primaries. Too bad the media wouldn't give Ron Paul a chance to win people over. I'm trying to cut back on meat too. It's healthier that way.

Hey Ali, it's great that you're calling attention to this problem. At my college we are busy working on building an interactive application to raise awareness for this issue, so I have been delving deep into the matter aswell. If we all come together on this, we can make the change.
Keep on preaching!

I'll try to eat more seafood (come here little shrimpies.........!!!!) though as a Texan I am sort of attached to my steaks.

And to those who want to do more than just vote, your favorite candidate or political party office could use all the help they can get. Or you can become an election worker and help at the polls on election day! It is not as hard as you might think.

Until this year I had stayed out of political matters for 20 years, but voted in the primary, went to the caucus, was elected to the county convention, then was elected to be a delegate at the state convention. In November I will be an election clerk and am on my local precincts's election committee.

It's a great way to gain some respect and appreciation for the whole process.....

its easy here in canada at the moment to cut back on meat, dead people, sick people, recalling meat. uncool stuff, have people throwing freezers full of meat away. I don't eat it too much myself, i am more of pasta and potatoes sure way to get plump im sure. apparently just turning your tap off while you brush your teeth saves our lovely lil planet just fine. i end up smackin myself tryin to remember the lil things i can do.

As a die hard pasta/carbohydrates fan, I will be more than happy to participate in the reduction of meat consumption! I've actually never had tofu either, so it's a good opportunity to try a new food :D Also, since a recent seizure has left me unable to drive for a while, I've started taking the bus to work. I've got to say, I used to be kind of lukewarm on the idea of public transportation, but now I wouldn't trade it for anything. You reduce the amount of carbon emissions, and you don't have to deal with traffic jams. It's a win-win! Thanks for the reminder about registering to vote. I believe this is going to be the most important election of our generation so far, and I am certainly going to be a part of it. Thank you so much, Ali, for your passion for making the world a better place. We should all follow your example!

Thanks for the info. That is REALLY interesting to know! I never thought something like meat could possibly contribute to global warming. I definitely want to see that article. I don't eat red meat, but I do eat poultry and dairy products. Mostly I just don't like the taste of red meat, and I've seen the way it's handled in documentaries, so that grosses me out (though the handling of poultry could be just as gross for all I know). This is definitely something about which we should spread the word! Let us know what you think of the Letterman book!

oh no! why would you start eating meat again? I've never understood the conversion back from vegetarianism... I don't think I COULD go back. The thought of eating another animal makes me sick! Anyway... Yes, there are lots of economic, environmental, health, etc... reasons to not eat meat. I just don't know why someone would go back to it...

That's great that your so conscious of your impact on the earth. Cutting back on meat will definitely help with that, as well as help prevent animals from suffering. I went vegan for the animals but I think its great that it helps the environment too.

Haha! It's getting cooler here in Holland.. But oh well, it's becoming fall!

Serious... Hm.. I'm a vegetarian too, so that's something I don't have to change anymore. I don't know what to think about it. Of course it's serious, but there are factories that produce more CO2 than me in my whole life...

Well, you have gotten some interesting comments to say the least :) I have a comment totally off subject. I just returned from a trip to India and wanted to let you know that business class in Lufthansa offers passengers various cd's to listen to. I will more than pleasantly surprised to see One Cell in the Sea listed at the top of the list of my choices under Pop/Rock. Since my flight was so long, I enjoyed your cd over and over. So thanks for making a rather unbearable flight bearable :)

Enjoy your European tour.

Take a look at the new edition of the Old Farmer's Almanac. It predicts that global cooling just may be underway in the decades to come. "We say that if human beings were not contributing to global warming, it would become real cold in the next 50 years," according to Editor-in-Chief Jud Hale.

Established in 1792, the Old Farmer's Almanac is North America's oldest continuously published periodical. It isn't jsut some crazy right-wingers trying to combat global warming. It's a well respected, well trusted publication that is not only credible, but extremely accurate. Don't take my word for it, check out the article from USA today here. I don't want to be the bringer of bad news, but maybe, just maybe, global warming isn't the problem Al Gore preaches it is. Maybe we should all eat a little more meat...

Ali (and fans),

Please read "The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Save Your Life and Your Environment" by John Robbins. It changed my life. I'm glad you are choosing to eat less meat. If only more people were informed about what we are really putting in our mouths and doing to the environment when we eat animals - including fish. I truly believe that this book will change your life too. I hope you take the time to check it out, and let me know what you think. Looking forward to the next tour...Love, Jamie

You may find this interesting since you seem to care about the bigger picture, and you talked about not eating most meat but still eating fish: http://www.fishinghurts.com/EnvironmentalConcerns.asp.

I like fish too, even though know I should finish my conversion too vegan to make the ultimate positive impact... It's a slow a difficult process for me.

Not to mention the gasses that are realeased, and the resources and energy that are squandered from raising dairy cows for our cheese, milk, and other such products. There are a lot of interesting tidbits here as well: http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/environment.html.

But, just as importantly, I really dig your music. Glad I ran across your page today! :)
