Published by SUBMEDIA and stimulator on July 2, 2008 in the fuckin show.

Naomi Klein's speech at the National Conference for Media reform was not included on the conference website. subMedia contacted Free Press, the organizer or the conference, to ask why The Shock Doctrine author's speech could not be found online, and the person explained that Free Press is a non-profit organization and that I should reefer to the disclaimer on their website which reads:

"Despite our best efforts, we feel that some of our speakers encroached on electoral space during their remarks at the National Conference for Media Reform. It is not in our interest to disseminate these recordings. We are reviewing all of our video content and will add that which we determine to be free of electoral statements to this page."

I don't quite understand how these things work, but whatever. Two sources have told me the reason Free Press did not include the speech was Klein's criticism of Barack Obama. It would be pretty fuckin lame if it were true.

But fuck it, I got a hold of a copy of the speech and here it is.

Klein said it so well! She's absolutely right, getting the right candidate in the office is only the first step, just the beginning. We then have to group and demand resolutions! She's a powerful speaker. Once Obama is president, we need Klein as a top advisor.

You're missing the point. Having an advisor, or a dozen, doesn't matter. Naomi called for mass movements convincing the elites that there will be REVOLUTION. That means you (and I) have to be involved not just demonstrating, but doing at the very minimum economic boycotts and general strikes. They have shown they're willing to kill presidents, presidential candidates, arrange plots to overthrow the government. So far the American people have refused to stand up when they have. It's going to take more than just advisors or demonstrations or phone calls.

I'm not missing the point. It takes steps. Yes, us in agreement have to join, create a force, and demand change. But, what's better than having someone who speaks so eloquently be a top advisor to the next president?? Why not have both? What's wrong with me suggesting having someone inside the establishment trying to force the change we all want?? And, us all demanding change at the same time... wouldn't that help to make a stronger impact? Truth, I think you need to stop finding someone to disagree with and try to see where the agreement is.

Not include a speech for knocking someone running for office? Considering the incredible amount of bashing were about to see coming from both parties for one another, this does seem quite asinine. Perhaps if its approved and endorsed by the opposing candidates, then its acceptable. I didnt interpret her speech as threatening, simply stating the facts. BOOOO FACTS!! WE WANT A SOAP OPERA!! I enjoyed this and will do more research on her publications and other speeches.

Whatever Klein's views on Obama's stand on the Iraq war, is it important to keep in mind that AT LEAST HE SEES THE WAR AS SOMETHING WE SHOULDN'T CONTINUE - or at least shift the focus of, whereas McCain doesn't see anything wrong with staying there for 100 years?

I hope that when people criticize him for any stand he takes, they realize that he must deal with forces on both sides of the political aisle, otherwise we have what we have always had: stalemate. We should no doubt hold people accountable (Bush should be first on our list), but we must realize Obama will have to deal with the legacy that the Bush administration has left in his lap.

We are already invested in Iraq.

So we must deal with the problem.

Somehow.

Thanks for posting this.

Naomi, great woman and much respect.

However, Obama, sorry to say, has his strings well attached.

The Iraq issue is yesterday and he still has NOT a clear stand on it, besides the age old "bring our troops back"...yadayada...
Sure, but what is his stand on some other issues that seem a bit more important in regards to the future of the WOLD?
Here is the deal: ANY candidate that supports terrorist nation Israel, does not question the official story of 9/11, pushes the war on terror and paints Al Qaida as a REAL threat and leaves "all military options open" against Iran cannot be trusted and Obama is quite clear on these issues.

Sorry to say, but Obama is not the savior and the "change" he's talking about is not in interest of the common man. Many well-meaning folks put their hope into this guy and believe into all the slogans of "change" and "unity" he utters like a hypnotist, without really clearly seeing behind the smokescreen and the whole workings and set up of this two party system to begin with.

But that is the workings of the system, to twist reality in such a way to make people believe they have choice and freedom, when in fact they have none. The best way to control a people is to make them believe they are free and have free to choice, while controlling their choices, behavior, desires, opinions and options through conditioning of official culture and the control of Education, Media, Religion, Economy and the Banking System.

"Forget the politicians, they're an irrelevancy. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you.
" -George Carlin

We're dealing with psychopaths in power. They don't feel or think like I or you do. Imagine a state of mind where you don't feel any empathy, no compassion, no guilt, no remorse whatsoever, but you are able to mimic these better "human" characteristics very well and mask it up, so that everyone around you believes anything you want them to believe, even appear as compassionate when in fact you have no empathy whatsoever. In short, you have no conscience. You are not genetically wired to even feel any empathy in this lifetime. And not any amount of "love and light" being sent or "positive thinking" from well meaning people (especially in the so-called New Age Movement) is going to change that. This is something many self-proclaimed "awake" and "spiritual" folks don't see. We need to open the eyes to reality and not wishful thinking, to truth, as it is, not as we like it or prefer it to be, for these are precious times.......

Change doesn't happen by crossing a box on election day.

We need to look into ourselves and into the world and see the lies we tell ourselves and in the world, before we can even attempt to make a better world.

Krishnamurti gave a touching talk forty years ago. This excerpt from his book of collected talks/writings "The First and Last freedom" speaks for itself and still very relevant for today. It shows clearly that we may have progressed technologically and there is outer progress, but psychologically and internally nothing really has changed within us.

"What causes war religious, political or economic? Obviously belief, either in nationalism, in an ideology, or in a particular dogma. If we had no belief but goodwill, live and consideration between us, then there would be no wars. But we are fed on beliefs, ideas and dogmas and therefore we breed discontent. The present crisis is of an exceptional nature and we as human beings must either pursue the path of constant conflict and continuous wars, which are the result of our everyday action, or else see the causes of war and turn our back upon them. Obviously what causes war is the desire for power, position, prestige, money; also the disease called nationalism, worship of a flag; and the disease of organized religion, the worship of dogma. All these are the causes of war; if you as an individual belong to any of the organized religions, if you are greedy for power, if you are envious, nationalistic, you are bound to produce a society, which will result in destruction. So again it depends upon you and not on the leaders; not on so-called statesman and all the rest of them.

It depends upon you and me but we do not seem to realize that. If once we really felt the responsibility of our own actions, how quickly we could bring to an end all these wars, this appalling misery! But you see, we are indifferent. We have three meals a day, we have our jobs, we have our bank accounts, big or little, and we say, " For God's sake, don't disturb us, leave us alone"; . The higher up we are, the more we want security, permanency, tranquility, the more we want to be left alone, to maintain things fixed as they are; but they cannot be maintained as they are, because there is nothing to maintain. Everything is disintegrating. We do not want to face the fact that you and I are responsible for wars. You and I may talk about peace, have conferences, sit around a table and discuss, but inwardly we are motivated by greed. We intrigue, we are nationalistic, we are bound by beliefs, by dogmas, for which we are willing to die and destroy each other.
Do you think such men, you and I, can have peace in the world?

Peace is not an ideal. Ideal is merely an escape, an avoidance of what is, a contradiction of what is. An ideal prevents direct action upon what is. To have peace, we will have to love, we will have to begin not to live an ideal life but to see things as they are and act upon them, transform them. As long as each one of us is seeking psychological security, the physiological security we need; food, clothing and shelter, is destroyed. We are seeking psychological security, which does not exist; and we seek it, if we can, through power, through position, through titles, names ; all of which is destroying physical security. This is an obvious fact, if you look at it.

To bring about peace in the world, to stop all wars, there must be a revolution in the individual, in you and me. Economic revolution without this inward revolution is meaningless, for hunger is the result of the maladjustment of economic conditions produced by our psychological states; greed, envy, ill-will and possessiveness. To put and end to this sorrow, to hunger, to war, there must be psychological revolution and few of us are willing to face that. We will discuss peace, plan legislation, create new leagues, the United Nations and so on; but we will not win peace because we will not give up our position, our authority, our money, our properties, our lives.

To rely on others is utterly futile; others cannot bring us peace. No leader is going to gives us peace, no government, no army, no country. What will bring peace is inward transformation, which will lead to outward action. Inward transformation is not isolation, is not withdrawal from outward action. On the contrary, there can be right action only when there is right thinking and there is no right thinking when there is no self-knowledge. Without knowing yourself, there is no peace.

Some of you will nod your heads and say, "I agree", and go outside and do exactly the same as you have been doing for the last ten or twenty years. Your agreement is merely verbal and has no significance, for the world's miseries and wars are not going to be stopped by your casual assent. They will be only stopped when you realize the danger, when you realize your responsibility, when you do not leave it to somebody else. If you realize the suffering, if you see the urgency of immediate action and do not postpone, then you will transform yourself.

It occurs to me that it wasn't just her criticism of Obama, but her points about the democratic party in general that helped get her censored.

I am so happy to hear someone make the point about this rampant treating of candidates like rockstars and that it is not enough to get the candidate into office and relax. It doesn't work that way people, there is no perfect idol out there who is going to make everything all better.

I daresay I love Naomi Klein!
