Larisa Alexandrovna <----ME

Sorry folks, I am on assignment and on deadline, so I have not had much time to blog. But I had to post this because I am astonished, discouraged, and frankly, frightened for this nation. The emphasis is mine:

A federal court has issued two rulings, the New York Times reports: One favoring President Bush's indefinite detentions of "enemy combatants," and another granting one of said "enemy combatants" the opportunity to challenge his detention in court.

The court effectively ruled that President Bush has the same right to indefinitely detain a civilian on American soil as he does an enemy soldier on a battlefield.

Is this type of dictatorial power not the very definition of terrorism?

Last night i was watching Bill Moyers. He had on two Republicans who were ragging on Bush , Dick, Newt, and the party in general for ignoring the Constitution. One said he was talking to GW, who informed him he was Commander and Chief of the "Nation". (He probably thought the Universe as well, until Fannie Freddie, Indy Mac (probably GM soon). When GW is at the Olympics, maybe he can convince the Chinese to buy our debt, mortgages, and failing companies. Love irony.

Ask the Chinese to buy our debt? Who do you think is paying for our debt and where do you think we are borrowing money from? Answer: The Chinese.

The U.S. has been BANKRUPT since December 2006 but did you hear any of the mainstream media report it, no.

You can read it straight from the Treasury department's report at this link

And here is the report by the Treasury department

Thx K. Not really a surprise, I think part of the problem is too much info and it all (seems to be different) depressing stuff. So maybe this is why Bushy going to the Olympics to appease Red Communist China who own us. And a reason to have paid mercenaries, so when the Chinese own us lock stock and barrel, he can hide behind Halliburton, Blackwater, etc.
You're doin' a heck of a job Bushy!

I KNOW..keeping abreast of all these presidential BUSHISM issues leaves me distraught in no terms that can be described...last year I read this book....if you REALLY want to be scared...I copied this from wikipedia so as to easily define the read:

Bush on the Couch: Inside the Mind of a President is the title of a 2004 book by psychoanalyst Justin Frank. The central premise of Frank's book is that President George W. Bush displays signs of poor mental health which makes him particularly ill suited to rule the most powerful nation on earth. Frank argues that Bush might suffer from megalomania, that he is probably not only uncapable of true compassion, but actually shows a tendency towards sadism. Frank also analyses, among other things, Bush’s famous habit of getting metaphors mixed up and convincingly concludes that Bush has substancial problems with abstract, flexible thinking.

He also tries to explain the appeal Bush has had on the public by describing the way Bush as a child (in a family grieving the death of Bush’s sister) would adapt the persona of a charming, easy-going clown. Frank also describes how the conflicting feelings of fear and omnipotence in George W Bush can resonate within the people who harbours such feelings of their own. Frank emphasizes that Bush, as an untreated alcoholic, is in constant danger of a relapse. Further, in Frank's opinion, Bush manifests the symptoms of a dry drunk, principally irritability, judgmentalism and a rigid, unadaptable world view.

An updated version of the book was released in October, 2007, including a new introduction and a new afterword.

Suzanne, I think it's hard to blame this out of control systematic administration spiralling failure to follow the Constitution all on one man's psychological profile as per the book you read by Frank. Just as Bush didn't get himself elected on his own, there are apparently a bevy of accomplices helping take down the country's system of laws: all ruled by fear instead of courage. The founding fathers wrote the initial laws in a spirit of starting a new land, not quivering in fear like our current leaders and judges do as they make their daily decisions affecting our nation's future.

One thing dictators do is work within the law or change the laws. Then when they do things like disappear people, they can say it is legal.

This administration has been quietly changing the laws, just a bit here and there, and we are defintely becoming a land of "Good Germans.

Yes.

However, I have a more sinister question for you.

If Democrats in Congress also thought the way you do, don't you think they would do something to stop him?

Apply that question to the war in Iraq, too.

Congress has the power to cut off funding for the troops, effectively ending the war immediately. It has the power to impeach Bush, thereby ending his reign of terror. It has the power to blow the whistle on Bush's dictatorial transgressions of the Constitution, thereby declaring themselves to be living within the law, not above it.

Question: Why hasn't it?

Think, dude. Long and hard.

The answer will scare the shit out of you. I guarantee it.

yea, Larisa,
i read the NY Times article...

it's frustrating to watch the constitution being crumpled under the shock doctrine!

judges who weasel around civil liberties to please the administration are a shameful sight in this day and age when we need the courts to stand up for the rights of the people.

13 years ago the UN Peacekeeping force allowed over 7,400 civilian men to be executed by the Serbian military --
the Serbian military said the men needed to be detained for questioning...
they were detained indefinitely...
here's the link to the BBC video: http://uk. youtube. com/watch?v=X-DUsQyklUM

all that is needed for evil to triumph is for those of good will to do nothing.

thanks for doing something Larisa.

Martial law in America. From Lincoln's Civil War era to Reagan's REX84 (short for Readiness Exercise 1984), Operations Garden Plot and Cable Splicer, and even the Huston Plan as a pretext for Watergate, the USofA has a sad dance with martial law.

The John W. Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2006 (PL 109-364) suverts posse comitatus and destroys Habeas Corpus.

What is truly scary is that Congress unconstitutionally allowed the AUMFs that GAVE Bush "at his determination" powers, in contradiction of the War Power Resolution of 1973 which is itself embedded within the AUMFs. The pretext for the Iraq AUMF should have had "clear" "situations" and "circumstances" according to the War Powers Resolution of 1973, meaning TRUTHFUL circumstances and situations. That's a laugher with WMD, as even Bush himself demonstrated with a "joke" video to the White House correspondent's dinner.

The court rulings are all based upon assumptions and you know what happens when assumptions are made. And with a pliant media cheerleading anything the Bush administration does, if you repeat the bs long enough and loud enough most people buy it.

Read it and it is terrifying to know our President can do this. This isn't going to end when Bush leaves office. Once the precedent has been set, any President will have the same power.

thats so sad!

shine light on the darkness
this is sick and wrong..
what about the right to a trial????? for any person????? to lock anyone up for years with no trial..or real proof of anything..because the truth they would find on Ali al-Marri was that he was paid by The President himself to be here to do these said things... to disrupt the already corrupt banking system?? really??
coming from a man who wants to pardon himself! Ha! cuz he knows he committed such heinous acts of war crime ...him and his whole damn administration! who out of Obama or McCain would admit that 9/11 and all of this is an inside job?!!?!? none of them!! which is why we should elect NO ONE!

F*CKING LIARS!

May I suggest that some of you may want to read an really enlightening book I just read:
THE END OF AMERICA: A LETTER OF WARNING TO A YOUNG PATROIT
By: Naomi Wolf
This short read is a real eye opener. It goes on to point out that Hilter (amoung other fascist dictators) all came to power through the proper channels of a democracy. They were elected officals who then used the system to pass laws that allowed them to take the system from a democracy to a fascist goverment. She then goes on to out tline the ten steps these dictators used to carry this out and goes on to campare it to our current goverment officals.

Things like using fear to start wars and pass things like the Patroit Act. It makes it look like Busch has a copy of Hilter's plan of action and is going through the steps one by one. It is scary! I know this country is is more trouble then the average person knows.......I now think it is in more trouble then even what some of use with our eyes open realize.

The really scary part is that the "definition" of an enemy combatant is ANYTHING BUSH WANTS.

"enemy combatants" [terrorists, I guess that's what it's equivalent to] are not members of organized government armies which are [most likely under Geneva convention rules..] and are not the same thing. Since our "wars" are made up of both types of "soldiers" that law had to be instituted. Yes, they are technically civilians, but on about the same level as serial killers.....And, I notice they are allowed to challenge their detention in our US courts. Hmm, I think it's a pretty good deal compared to prisoners of "war" in decades long gone....

Hmm, it would seem that our courts are taking over duties that any military court would be equiped to handle--except for the fact the "enemies/soldiers" are just thugs on the loose--trying to kill people all over the world in the name of some other renegade "civilian". So much for playing by the rules. I guess war is not a sport like football....I guess all is fair.

Beginning to look like a whirlpool of opinions are emerging on this new ruling.

Thanks for listening, y'all! ~joods

I've been meaning to tell you...

I had a great deal of respect for you before your MySpace blogging. You're a great actor and screenwriter. One of my favorites.

But you earned even more of my admiration and respect because (a) you're not just passionate about American politics; you're also a seeker of truth...someone who has very definite opinions, but who also has an open mind, and -- most importantly -- (b) you allow comments to be posted in response to your blogs even though you may not agree with what the poster has written. You may not think much of that. But, from my perspective, it's huge. It proves you walk the talk. You believe in free speech and an open expression of ideas. In short, you're not like (what's often called) the liberal, politically correct media -- censoring and filtering the news before broadcasting it to the public.

Thank you. Seriously.

You rock, man.

One of the things people don't understand is the president doesn't have much power. When you vote for a president you vote for "all of his advisers" also. If you want to know what kind of president Barak Obama or John McCain will be the look at who their advisers are and what is their history.

Another thing is that I hear people saying "look at what our leaders are doing" or "how can the president do this".

The truth you all have to realize is that the leaders of this country is YOU THE PEOPLE. You have ALWAYS had the power to change things and always had the power to stop all these unconstitutional laws. The ONLY reason this president and administration can do these things is cause THE PEOPLE DO NOTHING TO PROTEST AND STOP THEM.

IF THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY DO NOTHING THEN YOU WILL LOSE THE CONSTITUTION AND YOUR FREEDOM.

Here are some site with some suggestions on what to do:

Seems like the al-Marri guy should have been subject to the usual laws about credit card fraud if that's what he's been found to have done, rather than give him "indefinite" detention because of his heritage. If he's suspected seriously of terrorism, they could deport him or try him, but just caging people because they're from another country and committed check fraud is bizarre and scary. And exactly because of the reason you put in bold face in your blog. There are a lot of non-foreign thieves out there committing counterfeiting and fraud daily who are not from the Middle East and who have not got any thought of terrorism in mind. It sounds like if a foreigner commits the same sort of fraud act that a lot of petty thieves have been committing over here, then all sorts of additional motives are ascribed to them. Now, imagine an average petty thief from the U.S. commits check fraud -- is he now accused of suspicion of terrorism? No, not unless he's from Qatar. And then one has to wonder if a person whose politics are liberal could be set up for something like that. Sure hope not! I'm not saying this guy was set up because he probably was guilty of what they initially picked him up for, for all I know, but the additional notions of "terrorism" being added to the credit card fraud charge to make him stay in jail for years longer seems really strange. If they have proof he's a terrorist, they should show it and act accordingly, not just capriciously ascribe motives to him due to where he's from and lock him up indefinitely without trial or sentence. Scary.

When the US government and courts do not make our system of laws look fair by their mishandling of detainees & failure to provide habeus corpus, they make the USA look bad to our own nation's citizens and to those of other nations around the world, thus doing Bin Ladin's work of destroying our system of laws and our good name for him. I wish they would come to realize that.
