FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- SATURDAY, AUG 30, 8:10PM

CONTACT Andrew Willis Garcés 202 277 5262

ST.PAUL, MN -- Today two members of the RNC Welcoming Committee sought sanctuary from illegal disappearances carried out by the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office at the Twin Cities Friends Meeting in St. Paul. Andy Fahlstrom, 27, and Betsy Raasch-Gilman, 56, appealed to the meeting for sanctuary following the arrests of five other Welcoming Committee members on Saturday, August 30. Warrants for the "search" of two other members have been made public – others have been "searched" and then arrested and held without bail for "probable cause." Many have been snatched on the street by plainclothes officers.

"In the past two days we have seen numerous instances of police harassment and arrest of Bushville campers on Harriett Island, independent journalists, and now the arrest on false pretenses of activists who have worked for over two years, in the open, to provide support for public dissent this week," said Raasch-Gilman.

The mission of the RNC Welcoming Committee is to provide meeting space, medical and legal support, food, housing, and other forms of support to activists coming to the Convention to express their opposition to the policies of Bush/McCain. The Welcoming Committee itself is not planning any demonstrations.

"We're seeking sanctuary to call attention to the illegal tactics – police violence, harassment and mass arrests – of the Ramsey County Sheriff, who has ordered the politically motivated arrests of dedicated community activists on false pretenses to make it more difficult for ordinary people to express their dissent," said Fahlstrom. "We're calling on Mayor Coleman, Chief Harrington, and other St. Paul councilmembers to join Councilmember David Thune in denouncing and calling for an end to the illegal tactics of Sheriff Bob Fletcher, and to affirm that the important work of creating supportive environments for dissent by all people that is the mission of the Welcoming Committee continue."

The two were offered support by members of the Meeting, which planned a special Meeting for Worship for Saturday night in response to today's events.

"There's a very long tradition of Quakers giving protection to persecuted people. So I'm completely in favor of my Meeting giving sanctuary to those who are currently being persecuted by the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office," said Meeting member Charley Underwood, 60. Ralph Hilgendorf, 75, said, "I've always viewed the sheriff and the local police as people who are here to protect us and our civil rights. Today's events are uconscionable and inconceivable in a free society. "

The two sanctuary seekers are available for phone interviews, as is a member of the Twin Cities Friends Meeting. Call Andrew Willis Garcés at 202 277 5262.

Most people are not aware that we are in a Police State there is no question, no doubts or decision it is a fact that people are now having a hard time embracing.
I have been networking
in Indian Country for several years now gathering information and developing what I call a
"Sacred Survival Pact". There are places in this country now known as refuges that Native Activist have used and still use. Sadly we are not one body nor one tribe moving together but there are Natives that are being raised up through spiritual visions to lead others. The "Sacred Survival Pact" is a group of people however small or large that have a survival plan, each person is responsible for a part of that plan and when the time comes they will meet up in the place they have chosen and help support one another through what is too come. There are two geographic locations that are virtually isolated. I along with nine other people at last count will be gathering in one of these locations which I will not publish here "save who you can" if anyone wants information on what and how to form a "Sacred Survival Pact" what tools and knowledge you will need and the best places to seek asylum please contact me through Johns Page... understand that there are places and people within this country that do not fall under the jurisdiction of this government.
May Great Mystery watch over you and bring you peace!!!

The police won't arrest someone unless they brake the law. Almost seems like someone gets arrested at any kind of protest. I remember a few months ago when President Bush came to Phoenix for a convention in support of John McCain. There were protesters in downtown Phoenix and if I can remember correctly some did get arrested. I believe some of the arrests were because two people would get in an arguement and then start fighting.

For fear of sounding a little like a conspiracy theorist (oh, come on we all have a little Fox Mulder in us don't we...?? At least that what the voices tell me....) It seems kinda funny to me that at the "other" convention peaceful protestors are arrested and abused for everyone to see, and for little cause, in fact the security forces caused the peacefull protest to become loud and seemingly menacing. Then we have the Republican convention... protestors? no! they are removed with stealth - do they think people will believe that there were no protestors at the republican convention? Do they think if they do it quitely people will believe it didn't happen at theirs? Don't worry they will call it a matter of national security and then they don't have to press charges for however long they choose.

Everything I've been hearing out of St. Paul is BAD. Something very scary is happening up there, and I fear it will only get worse in the coming days.

I can't decide whether I'm bummed or relieved that I'm not able to get to the RNC. Part of me wants to be there, documenting what is happening, because it is seriously fucked up. And part of me is glad to be a very long way away, because it is going to be so not pretty when the shit comes down.

People - probably activists peacefully protesting - are going to get hurt. It's inevitable, because the cops are looking for a fight. After all, the St. Paul PD got $50 million from the federal government to buy shiny new anti-riot gear. And realistically, how often are they likely to use it? This is their big chance.

Check out submedia's report on Friday night arrests in St Paul:

Free society? Sounds like fiction.

And it's sad that children of this generation are living in a completely different America from what it used to be. They don't know "pride" or "patriotism" or "hope". And these obscene violations of our civil rights makes me sick. Peace and love seem to have slipped through the cracks as our country thrives on the almighty dollar... drenched in blood.

Fuck this. I can't stand idly by and watch this happen and keep my mouth shut.

Thank fucking Christ you made this movie, John... and have inspired so many people to open thier eyes... more importantly, to open their mouths, and speak from their hearts.

You've started something big... so, THANK YOU.

The RNC convention in NYC 2004...same tactics

September 9, 2004
"A Protest Against a War on Terrorism Might be a Terrorist Act"
The Crisis of Public Dissent
http://www. counterpunch. org/shor09092004. html

"As I stood among the half-million protesters in the blistering heat of Manhattan's streets on August 29, 2004, it seemed difficult to imagine that the right of public dissent was threatened. However, over the next few days and nights demonstrators in a variety of locations throughout New York City would experience militarized responses by the police, resulting in nearly 2000 arrests. Although the mass mobilizations before and during the Republican National Convention (RNC) reflected an overwhelming commitment to non-violence and creativity on the part of the demonstrators, the political managers of the city and the RNC were determined to preempt any disruptive protests, irrespective of the provisions of First Amendment rights.
"

And the pattern of abuse of dissenters is clear,

Arrested Bush Dissenters Eye Courts
http://www. truthout. org/article/arrested-bush-dissenters-eye-courts

"In the months before the 2004 election, dozens of people across the nation were banished from or arrested at Bush political rallies, some for heckling the president, others simply for holding signs or wearing clothing that expressed opposition to the war and administration policies.

Similar things have happened at official, taxpayer-funded, presidential visits, before and after the election. Some targeted by security have been escorted from events, while others have been arrested and charged with misdemeanors that were later dropped by local prosecutors.

Now, in federal courthouses from Charleston, W. Va., to Denver, federal officials and state and local authorities are being forced to defend themselves against lawsuits challenging the arrests and security policies.

While the circumstances differ, the cases share the same fundamental themes. Generally, they accuse federal officials of developing security measures to identify, segregate, deny entry or expel dissenters.

From RNC Welcoming Committee site:

Convergence Space Re-Opens, Moving forward with organizing for Sept 1
August 30th, 2008
The convergence Space is open as of 2 PM today. The police ransacked the building Friday night, bursting in with guns drawn, throwing people to the ground, and breaking down doors inside the space. They took with them computers, boxes of protest literature, maps, cell phones, digital cameras, a video camera, the landlord’s pvc piping, and poster making supplies. The evidence receipts given contain no mention of feces or human waste, and the landlord can attest to the lack of sleeping mats on the premises. The Ramsey County Sheriff’s office then closed the building for a “fire code” violation. Fire code violations are also being used to close the houses of activists, with officials saying that if the doors on homes that they knocked down aren’t fixed by tonight they will board up the homes. Today, Saturday, the city council representative for the ward that the Convergence Space is in was able to contact the Department of Safety and Inspections who are the actual authorities to determine if there is a code violation. The director of the department came to the space and ascertained that there were no code violations to be found.

Moving Forward

A public meeting was held in Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis today that was attended by hundreds of people in solidarity with the victims of police violence. Several police raids were conducted on homes today and protest organizers were taken into custody. Police continue to target organizers of protest activities and is “disappearing” any activists they can find. We are calling on everyone interested in protecting their freedom of political speech to maintain a round the clock vigil at the Convergence Center to help prevent further police violence and intimidation. Public pressure is also needed on elected officials who are bowing to the wishes of Bush and friends. The Sheriff’s office continues to lie and spread misinformation in a PR campaign to try to curtail protest plans.

People interested in organizing for September 1st are invited to the spokescouncil at 7:30 tonight at the Convergence Space to get involved.

The Welcoming Committee asks everyone to continue organizing to CRASH THE CONVENTION on September 1st. We may all be disappeared one by one by the police from the streets and our homes, and put in jail to pre-empt any protest against Bush, Cheney, and Company as they come into town, but that doesn’t matter anymore. It will be you in the streets. The Welcoming Committee only functioned to coordinate the logistics for this weekend’s events and open a space for organizing to happen. Now that you are here, it is in your hands.

I have actual video footage of people being horribly “harassed” by the Washington DC police during King George II’s last Inauguration in 04 that was never shown on our corporate owned media. My friend Mike was there that day and he shot the footage while interviewing many of the Americans who came to peacefully protest the unholy second coming of George Bush. Many of their most basic civil liberties afforded to them under the Constitution were deftly swept aside by the very police who were sworn to protect them. It’s times like these when good men must truly do something once again. Please vote Obama/Biden in November.

I hate it when the police get involved like this.
It's terrible!

It happened in Denver, too, at the DNC. Reporters were arrested off a public sidewalk for taking pictures of and observing the comings and goings of high-ranking Democrat officials/lobbyists/supporters. It seems the DNC didn't want the public knowing who was bankrolling their activities.

Oppression works both ways, John. It's not just Republicans. I'm beginning to wonder what your objective is, here. If it's truth you seek, you're only half-heartedly pursuing it. If it's controversy, rancor, and anger, you're hitting the mark 9 times out of 10.

Citizens in this country have grown very afraid of their own government. But that fear won't end with Democrats in control of the White House. On the contrary, political correctness is one of the most First Amendment-quashing movements the U.S. has ever tolerated. It could very well be the death of America.

The answer isn't to replace the Republicans. It isn't to install Democrats.
It's to hold our elected officials to the Constitution and get them the hell out of our lives!

Thanks for posting this blog. Please keep us informed on these events.
