novembre 23, 2006 - jeudi

Humeur actuelle :  exaspéré
I probably shouldn't be writing this , but I have to get it off my chest . I am not a big fan of the NME , as they sold me down the river when I last talked to them , I did and interview and made a sarcastic joke using the word "gak" which is slang for cocaine . They glorified my joke and used it out of context , then their public relations dept , contacted the tabloids in a shameful attempt to sell more copies . And , I have ever since been known as " Lily Allen , Pint sized potty mouth popstar who once admitted she would celebrate her no 1 single by taking cocaine ! " .
Thanks NME . Now , I have read many articles in the NME , where male band members freely admit to, or associate themselves with the taking of drugs , and I havent seen many of them ending up in the tabloids . Take Klaxons for example, and the ongoing MDMA references. " MDMAZING " I believe was the title of a recent article ( how responsible! ) .
The only reason I can think of , for recieving such a different form of treatment , is because I am a woman . I did recieve a written apology from Conor Mcnicholas ( the editor) . But i vowed never to work with the NME agian . As I thought, if there was one publication I could trust and be frank with , it would be the theirs .

Anyway , I was aproached by them again , with regards to the "Cool List Issue 2006" , five women had made it into the top 10 and , subsequently we (the women) were asked to pose for photos to be the main feature for the cover . As I said before , I vowed not to work with them again , but as the context was so important ie; a a strong female presence in music . I thought i might aswell put aside my differences and do it . Now i don't care for " the cool list " , and I said this to them in the interview , which is probably why they didn't print it . I don't really think the NME are in any position to tell us who is cool and who isn't , personally I don't think a bunch of people sitting in an office drinking tea , inventing musical genres , and watching Nathan Barley DVD's are leading any kind of cool brigade , do you ?
But i did find it interesting that they wanted to put five women on the cover , and wanted to name 2006 , our year .

I went to get a copy yesterday , and this is what we ( the women ) got . Another fuckin MUSE cover . I like Muse , infact , Black Holes and Revelations , is one of my favourite albums of this year . But the NME have covered them so much this year already .

Now usually you might expect a call , just out of courtousy telling us we had been pulled off the cover , but we recieved nothing .

This is Conors ( the editors) comments on this issue , He has obviusly put out some press release , stating how supportive the NME is to women in music

Conor McNicholas, the editor of NME, said he was pleased that the Cool List was full of women who had brought "new energy" to the music world.

"This year's Cool List is a testament to the raft of hugely talented women who have taken hold of the music scene in 2006," he said. "From Beth to Lily to Karen, they've brought new energy to a scene dominated by men. They're also living proof that you can still rock a crowd when you're wearing stilettos."

I mean how fucking patronising " you can still rock a crowd wearing stilletos "
Is that all we are , stilleto wearing people , is that all he could say ,that we brought a " new energy" to the music scene . Don't make me sick , wev'e always been here you arrogant prick , this was your chance to actually show you meant it . And instead you put Muse on the cover . Cause you thought that your readers might not buy a magazine with an overweight lesbian and a not particularly attractive looking me , on the front . Wankers .

You should take your heads out of you New Rave arses , and actually think about your responsibilities to youth culture , and to women in general .

Oh and by the way , theres not enough RAVE in New Rave .

The whole "I got to see how they sound" idea is pretty retarded. Music Magazines? Seriously? Get your music out.. play it.. express yourself.. people will listen to it if they like it. These magazines will do more damage than good, they're made for 13yr old girls so they can cut out pics and tape them to there 9x9 rooms. Why have some dumbass type shit about you when they don't know you?... they're not even real reporters.. they're just interviewers and wanna-be critics. The talentless speaking with their asses about Artists... Let them talk their shit because that's all they're worth! I could wipe my ass with some bark and have something more interesting to read than a magazine... unless it was a science mag because I'm a geek and stuff.

Lily, you say that you dont wanna be famous, that you dont wanna be a celebrity, that you just wanna sing. Thats all fine and all.. but the truth is, you ARE famous and youre a celebrity. The only way to get outta that is to go live under a rock. So if you wanna keep doin what you wanna do, you gotta put up with it.

I mean sure, id never wanna be a celeb cause I dont wanna change who I am or my behaviour and Id always wanna fight back at the shit the media and that say and do. But in your case, instead of going "Well Im gonna do what I wanna do and thats the end of it!" ...you gotta find some middle ground. If you dont want people associating you with drugs -- dont talk about it, even as a joke!

Fight the media, hell yeh fight them, but dont dig yourself a hole while doin it. I woulda said the same things you did about NME if I was in your position. By the way, I read an awesome review about your Fremantle show here in WA, Australia the other day. They love ya.

Major props for speaking your mind on this issue and I fully agree. However, you know how the media is, it can be your best friend or your worst enemy, no pun intended. Regardless, can't wait to see your show w/Camp Freddy at Avalon in LA - should be fucking awesome!

Cheers

I agree with a lot of what you've said Lily, and I hope you sent those comments in to the editor.  Having said that, there has been a lot of other press coverage in newspapers yesterday and today about how good it was that there were so many women such as yourself included this time around... so if nothing else surely that's a good thing?  I can see both sides I guess, but I definitely see where you're coming from with a lot of those comments.

...and by the way - it's your own fault that you're widely assosiated with cocaine now.  If you didn't want to be known as the gaq queen you shouldn't have said it in the first place, even if you were joking.  You should know the media better than that.

word to that... I love the rants also... so much truth in what's expresseed...

I never buy NME, but if Lily had been the FRONT COVER and I mean  FRONT PAGE, not SHITTY LITTLE CORNER PREVIEW, I more than likely would have picked it up and bought  it.

it is disappointing to hear the stilletos comment, there's no stronger sex in the world of music.

At least you got a pic. Look at poor little Jarvis Cocker there!!

Well it's nice to know what the editor's perception of a "strong female presence in music" is. Grr.. they make me angry all those magazines. Mass brainwashing. Yeah that is out of order though but what can you do? They'll print what they think will sell. Deep down they're all narrow minded wankers even they want people to think otherwise. I shouldn't worry about it too much. They're all just pricks.

Luv James

Ps. Lily Allen is miles better than Muse!

I love Muse but seriously, the way NME go on you'd think they were the only band in the world.... ever.

'From Beth to Lily to Karen, they've brought new energy to a scene dominated by men. They're also living proof that you can still rock a crowd when you're wearing stilettos.'

Eurgh where are we? The 18th Century? Not only is that patronising to women in the music scene now, but all the women that have come before.

But we should "give a fuck"! You say women have a place in music..."we all know it"...but not everyone does! We depend on crappy publishers like NME to make this more noticable, and counter-act the lack of equality!

I was at work the other day we were listening to the radio and this guy went, "Oh God! Not another woman singer in a band!" I screwed!

The same goes for many other roles in the arts. Its the history of male writers and critics that have canonised male music, art, film, lit etc! I know it's sorta off the subject bu I'm a film-maker aspiring to direct i saw this the other day and it made me pissed off...

It's not like she wasn't on this cover in the first place. Sure, there was a Muse picture up there, but I'm pretty sure you see the women right next to them. It's possible those aren't the photos she went in to shoot, but who the fuck cares. Point is, she was still on the cover. I love her music, but when I read this, it made it seem like she wasn't on the cover at all when she clearly is. Maybe she thought the girls would take up the entire thing, but that's her own damn problem. No need to get pissy as fuck about it.

Oh, and if anyone wants to be like "YOU BITCH, YOU'RE PROBABLY A MUSE FAN!" Yes, I actually am. So sue me.

You know what, i've always find those indie mags obsessed with "trying to be cool", all you need is a scruff hair cut, dirty skin and a drugs story and you'll make the cover! what they've said is completly patronising and stiupied since some of the biggest music al icons in the world are women, however it was probably delibrate as it is cool to throw in a few sexixt remarks, don;t let it get to you, just do you init!!!

seems like the NME want a bloody slap on the back for actually including women in their cool list...f*** sake, it's 2007 and we STILL don't have equality in the music business...?!
Also, that stilettos comment was bloody ridiculous.
I don't know if you've read it, but 'Never Mind the Bollocks - Women Rewrite Rock' by Amy Raphael is ESSENTIAL reading.

Well said Lily, I hate NME its one of the most pretentious magazines out there full of the most prententious bands who think because nobody has heard of them they are in some way better or significant yet most can't play more than two guitar chords and cant sing in any other way than that monotone voice. Plus its the fact that NME think they are 'against the system' so to speak yet are just as contrived and confirm to a system just as much as anyone else.

Glad to see a influential female pop star like you telling all what NME really is, a bunch of wankers sat around watching Nathan Barley DVD's lol.
