Who Gives Kudos:

Friday, August 24, 2007

For me to continue to create music, I have to know that people are hearing it. Elements of cost and lack of distribution have made most of my catalogue very difficult to acquire. So rather than go into a long diatribe about how the industry is changing, I am just going to post this blog to announce a new "Share the Wes" policy.

My entire catalogue is now available through links on this site as MP3 downloads – at no cost.

The only thing I ask in return is that if you choose to download the music and add it to your collection, you "Share the Wes" with everyone you know that may have an interest in the music that I create.

Point them to the site and encourage them to discover the music I have created over the course of my career, and then encourage them to share it!

If you like the music, go to the "Demand it" button on my site, tell me where you are, and hopefully at some point in the future I can come near to where you are and "Share the Wes" live.

I am driven by a need to create and perform. Sharing my music in this manner will help to remove some of the barriers that I have encountered in exposing the songs to a wider audience.

In regards to income, music is not free to create. There are heavy costs in the time, money and expense it takes to create, record and perform the music. Many people also still enjoy having the CD and artwork… Some like to have it signed to collect, and let¹s face it, CD's are higher quality and sound better than MP3's. So to help defray these costs and still make the music available to the fans that love having the discs, I will still offer the music in CD form online and at gigs, although most of the music I am offering is now out of print, which again, is a major factor in my decision to "Share the Wes" for free.

I've added a Paypal button on the site for donations to go towards covering the expense of creating new music. If you download the music and you love it, and you want to be a part of supporting my quest to create more, click the Paypal button. Any amount helps and will go to covering the cost of creating new music.

When I create new music, there will be an initial period where it will only be available on CD or Snocap, again, to help cover the costs.

The bottom line is, there are now over 50 songs on this site to have, to share, and to help you become a part of the entire history of my journey of creating music.

Please take it all, listen to it, and enjoy… and share it!

John Wesley

Hi Wes, hope you're well. I think it's a great idea to get your music out to a wider amount of people and I'll definitely be helping to spread the word as much as I can as your songs deserve a huge audience :)

Right...off to demand some more Wes in the UK ;) I'll doubtless have a look at that Paypal link at some point soon too to help out a little - I'd always choose to have a proper CD with artwork if the option is there.

Take care...can't wait to hear the new tunes!

Fantastic stuff Wes! It has been very hard to get a hold of your music recently :-(
Very interesting idea for an underground artist....surely a first in some way! I dont know if you remember but I interviewed you a couple of years ago in Glasgow for a documentary I was making on independent music.......still doin that and adding artists to it all the time. Distribution and cost was one of the the main subjects of the interview and how anyone can make music now( myspace has arrived since then), from pizza boys to executives.

Anyway good to have seen you develop your own strategy to fight the commercial machine! Fight the good fight!

Steve

Ps ; get over to Dublin to perform and the guinness is on me! ;-)
PPS : I can send you a copy of yours and Steves interview whenever you like( better late than Never!)

Wow, good for you trying another way to fight the greedy industry machine and get your amazing music out. I will definitely do my best to spread the Wes word. I'm a newer fan (through Porcupine Tree), but I absolutely love YOUR music as well. Don't give up!

very interested idea. but i am indeed going to share the wes. I just posted your entire message at the Mike Portnoy forum. And if word gets around anywhere, it'll get around from there. I really think this is an excellent idea on your part. I've don't generally like sharing my music, but now that I think about it... I've got a few friends that would love your stuff.

Take care John! I'll see you in Nashville, Houston and Dallas

Hi Wes, hope you're well. I think it's a great idea to get your music out to a wider amount of people and I'll definitely be helping to spread the word as much as I can as your songs deserve a huge audience. I have met you at Porcupine Tree Shows in Cleveland and always buy at least a cd each time. Keep the music flowing and push to get the band to support by way of playing on a track or two until you can stand as a sales figure; One your own.
Cheers to you.
I look forward to October in Cleveland Ohio again. Please try and come out and sign after the show.

It's very interesting to see an established artist trying out this concept, which I believe should work. When starting to read you blog post about this, a question was immediately forming in my head: "is there any way that I can donate money directly to you, instead of buying CD's?". Then I did something that is unusual for me. I finished reading your post, and found the answer (usually I get so excited so I post stuff only to later find that it was not necessary...). As you mention, some of your music is hard to find. I have been looking to getting a copy of Shiver, but it's hard when living in Europe...

So, I will download your music (which I was pointed to by my girlfriend, and being a fan of Porcupine Tree there is a connection for me personally as well), and I will spread the word.

And I am looking forward to see you perform live, together with Porcupine Tree in Copenhagen on November 26th, and if you happen to end up with a solo gig in Copenhagen, or somewhere in the south of Sweden, my girlfriend and I will put in great effort to make sure we are there to experience it!

I wish you the best of luck with the "Share the Wes" concept.

I'll do my best to Share the Wes.

Like everyone said, great idea my man.... I'll be buying an album or two as well as enjoying these kind download offers!

Remember the goofy guy that caught the encore bra and had you sign it in Cleveland? Yeah, that was me. :P

What a bold (and brilliant) decision! We'll keep doing our best to spread the word so long as you keep doing what you do best and making such incredible music.

Many thanks for your free music, ... I've always loved posting my music freely to the aether (but I'm a total amateur, anyway). It's always a very bold move for a professional to offer free stuff, ... to me it means it's more important for people to hear it rather than just to rack up sales figures. And if they really like it and want to support the artist, they will. I do.

Hi Wes,
I've had a listen, and I intend to share the Wes. You're a brave man, but I think you're also a very astute one! If it wasn't for home taping in the 80's I'd never have heard any cool music, I'd never have become interested in music, never would have started a record collection, never would have learned the bass, joined a band or recorded any CDs of my own. Same applies to sharing music online. People will buy the music only when they like it - and they won't know they like it unless they get to hear it. Good luck to you and I hope this makes you the fortune you deserve!
