i guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that's really sad to me.

yes, i am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but i just think it's frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow's dinner than for the chef.

yup, miss piggy and chicken little may rest easy, but gay people in florida and california can no longer get married and gay couples in arkansas can't adopt children. g-d forbid a loving family (regardless of sexual orientation) give a needy child a home! there aren't children out there in dire need of love and shelter, no this country is thriving and no child is in need.

oh well, i guess one out of four ain't bad!

I was really shocked when I heard about Prop 8 not making it, what happens now to all those people who had their ceremonies and now it means jack?? I mean, I can't get hitched here in good old Oz land either, but i've lived in the UK, a country so so much more reserved than CA or Australia and Civvie Partnerships have been legal for a few years now, I really thought this might have been the year for it, oh well, spose we can't have it all. Although I reckon all Australians breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday. Someone has even rubbed out one of the "r's" in the street name where I work in the middle of Perth and changed Barrack Street to Barack Street. Keep up the blogs and the music.

For the people who were married before the ridiculous passing of 8, I believe their marriage still holds. This is what the SF media area was stating yesterday. Obama being elected into office was a huge win, but not there is another all Californians need to push for, EQUALITY. I think people get too caught up in the "gay/straight" thing and forget this about human rights. No human should ever be treated this way; it comes down to scare tactics which is how Yes prevailed. The one positive to all this was they did not "win" 8 by much, and the battle has only just begun. Please stay hopeful as one day we will live in world with less prejudice and a need to label individuals.

peace,

Well said! Obama was elected, that is great and amazing, Prop 8 is accepted, it's 2 steps backwards. It's saying that people aren't all equal and that my love for my girlfriend is not worthy of marriage in California. What a sad day.

We just saw it on the news here, in Rotterdam, the netherlands. It just gives me a very sad feeling after the great feelings from yesterday... The presidential election was a new time, Mr King was smiling from up above, Now the gay people... God if only we we're all seen equal.. One day.. One day.

I think it..s good, that chicken can now live in better conditions, but you..re right. Why can gay people in california and florida no longer get married? Why can..t people who love each other, some matter what gender they have, married? In my opinion people who love each other should have the right to get married and to adopt a child.

Dear California, Florida, Arkansas,
Today this morning I sit here with my cup of coffee, a bittersweet feeling. Last night I saw all my friends celebrating Obama's win. Yes, it was a historical evening one that my generation was able to change. No longer will the " White Male" gene be required to run for the presidency. I celebrated with all types of ages, races, and neighborhoods this victory. However my heart is broken for Prop 8 is not looking good. At this moment it says 52% are in favor of YES and 48% are in favor of NO. There are still absentee ballots that have not been counted. My heart was even more broken but not surprised that the majority of Latinos and Blacks voted in Favor of Prop 8. The religious vote from that demographic made it possible. In times of struggle and uncertainty Religion has played its role and people have searched for an understanding why things are the way they seem. How can a state that turned Blue for Obama really show it's true color of RED? I've had it. I'm sick of people being so hypocritical . I'm taking a Stand and I hope all Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender people take it with me. I'm done with being outcasted by all. Gone will be the days when society globally will start respecting Homosexuals and seeing us for Humans and not perverts as they the people have wanted to cast us all. Why is it so important you ask? For the simple reason that I want my RIGHT! Straight people will argue that Marriage was based on a union between Man and Woman for the simple sealing of "Pro-Creation". Therefore the religious sector campaigns on the fact that when Homosexuals use the Marriage Union they are disturbing Gods plan of Procreation and using it to Pervert. I say Bullshit. We use it just like everyone else to announce our Love to the whole world and also start families. We adopt all the unwanted children of the world and give those a chance who will never be loved. I want my equal rights and will FIGHT for them. There is a little girl inside of me who dreams about her big day. Who dreams about the wedding of a lifetime. A grand affair. I will not stop until that little girl is happy. I owe it to all Brothers and Sisters who fought long hard to allow us to walk through the Castro or Christopher Street without any fear, To have a little town called P-town or Fire Island, and Cherry Grove. To Harvey Milk and Del Martin . I'm angry. I owe it to the children at the school I teach who have Gay Parents who knew what Prop 8 was and how important it was to them to have their parents have that right. So while everyone is nursing their hangovers last night from screaming "OBAMA" I'm here ready to start fighting. It's funny cause a lot of Obama supporters were so happy but when I said "We still need Prop 8" they said "Oh whatever". That broke my heart. I get it we were all in the moment and put all of our energy to win a victory but is it really a victory when those that helped make it possible too have been left out? Oh and another thing the people who support "YES" on Prop 8 have a lot of nerve using Obama speech to promote their cause. You will not create doubt in my mind as to why I voted for him… So how can people that spread Gods love and Name to every nation agree that one thing everyone should hate is Homosexuals and of course The Devil.

If that doesn't happen then I will also rally on a New Prop called "The Marriage act" that will not allow heterosexuals from EVER DIVORCING.
Because if "Marriage" is so "Sacred" than tell me why the Divorce rate is at it's all time high?

Samantha you make a valid point and good observation...people do put more thought into tomorrow's dinner before any consideration of the person who so kindly prepared it:(
No family should be denied a chance to adopt a child.

If couples have good intentions for the well being of a child and any sense of family values...traditional or otherwise they should be allowed to open their home to needy children.

peace and love:)

interesting how i'm the only one who would comment on this post...or simply decide to ignore this one...perhaps the regular readers just had absolutely nothing to say... about an issue that actually holds weight. no judgement man! people's priorities are not always the same, people have a right to prioritize what's best for them, what's best for the pair of them (if they have a partner). it makes me sad to know you can't have it all...everything comes with a price. it saddens me to know that i would hesitat to make a decision that would benefit the collective because in making my decision, i would be giving up some people's right to love, to create a family, to choose. why do we have to give back so much accomplishment to move forward. it doesn't seem like an even trade. sam, one out of four is pretty bad.

i think its sad that the animal rights acts were considered a downer/are belittled in any way...let's not compare them to how fucking sad it was for my girlfriend and i that prop 8 got passed...animal rights are good news and its frightening that people dont get as much compassion in this one situation, usually its only the other way around.

im hoping Barack will fix prop 8 when he's in office...

I totally agree with you. I live in Florida, and Amendment 2 passing was a terrible blow to alot of us. I am a single mother of three who happens to be a lesbian. I think it is a sad state of affairs when the government gets involved in matters of the heart. If they can't tell me what religion I can be, how can they deny me my right to a legal partership with the person I love. How is this legal? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE DIVISION BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE. Because to me thats what this really boils down to, others pushing their own moral compass on the people around them. Judging what others do. Nevermind the fact that it is quite possible to have a stable loving gay/lesbian relationship where children of that partnership flourish, where love is abundant and where those two people want nothing more than to be able to be just like anyone else, Married.

I am lucky in that I have people that are in my life that love and accept my choices in whom I can love and be commited to. But to not be able to make legal decisions for my partner in the event of tragedy, to not be able to share health insurance, to not be acknowledged is devastating.

I also have a child that has been entrusted to me to look after as a legal guardian to, his parents are struggling financially and have a rocky relationship and felt that my household would be a more stable environment for him than theirs. Imagine that, a lesbian better equipped to raise their child then they could, with love, support and acceptance. With all the kids in adoption agencies who sit and wait day after day for someone to just love them, how can they justify denying them love from where ever they can obtain it. Gays and Lesbians are humans too, they love, they feel and they are also commited to their families.
Wake up people, would you deny a child love, just because of your own fears and misconceptions, or just cause your religion doesn't happen to agree with it?
I hope one day, when I find that special someone whom I want to spend the rest of my life with, that I will be able to walk down that aisle with my head held high and proclaim to the world that I hold my love for this person to the highest standards and be accepted not only by friends but my country and government by allowing me to legally marry her! One day, our day will come!!!
Much love, Samantha, you are truly an inspiration, a beautiful soul.

Yeh it is quite upsetting that prop 8 was a yes freaken horrible..and ur right about the children thing, I know for sure since I am a product of the adoption agency, and I believe every child deserves a family, so this is just complete bs...Although if I think about it, things have improved since stonewall, but there is still alot of improvement needed obviously, and I hope that one day these incessant acts of bigotry will cease to exist, but we do not live in a perfect world, and unfortunately fall prey to set backs such as these...

i feel the same as you, samantha. it's so disappointing and sad when we've made huge, positive strides, only to have to take steps back because people get frightened...and of what? scared of LOVE. we did make a bit of progress here in connecticut yesterday: we voted against holding a state constitutional convention, which would have given "the scared ones" the opportunity to strike down our new same-sex marriage legalization. so, that's two out of five, anyway. peace to you and those you love.

Arkansas is one of the worst places in the United States that I've ever heard of in regards to gay rights. My friend was buried there last week after he committed suicide because his father "refused" to accept the fact that his son loved another man.

That fact that Prop 8 was so close to being defeated breaks my heart.

it does make one who is gay feel slightly less prestigious than a chicken. in all seriousness though you would really think we have moved farther forward in this day and age and be able to look past these homosexual stereotypes and believe that we could love a child just a completely if not more than some heterosexual families.

Yes, it's sad to know that where I am the government wants to make it mandatory that anyone over 40 with a history of diabetes must get yearly tests done, AND, they want to cut out drivers licenses for those over a certain age. What's happened to our right to certain freedoms? Maybe the government needs to cut out their own spending and making the tax payers take care of the tab? Maybe they need to take care of the homeless vets living under bridges who fought for this country instead of giving everything to those who aren't from here. The government interferes TOO much into our private lives. Why can't two people that are in love marry? Why does government people decide whats best for US? Maybe they need to some soul searching instead of preaching.

I'm in Arizona, we took this step back as well. I was heartbroken that my state felt this way, but I was STUNNED that California did this!!! First thing this morning I sent the letter below to my local newspaper...Samantha, I am truly sad that our country feels this way...

Moving Forward, or Back?

While I woke up this morning excited about the possibility of something new, I also understand some of the apprehension caused by the change we all face. I had some strong feelings, good & bad for both candidates. I don’t vote for a party, I have always voted for the person running. And although I voted for Obama, even I have some concerns about some of the reform that he proposes.

But, that’s NOT what this rant is about!

My tirade is concerning the huge movement to STOP Gay marriage.

What the Hell is wrong with people? Are some of us so caught up in worrying about what others are doing with their personal lives that they fail to see real issues that face this planet?

Unwed high school “children” are having babies at an alarming rate.

How do we address that issue? We celebrate the birth of 16 year old Jaime Spears baby!? What’s going on?

Disease, there’s a good one to focus some energy. There are 234,460 new cases of Prostate cancer each year. 45,000 women die from Alzheimer’s each year & another 40,000 die from Breast Cancer. If we placed even half of the energy we focus on worrying about what people are doing in their bedrooms on health issues, we might be able to find a cure for one of these killers.

Have you eaten today? Well guess what? Thousands of children went to school today with nothing to eat. In New York there was a study conducted on 32 schools. 1000 children were being sent to school with nothing but coffee, and another nearly 500 were sent to school with no breakfast. Some children stated that they went to school so they could eat the only meal they would eat all day! Why is this not a concern for ANYONE who can’t imagine the thought of a child being hungry? I guess the worry of whether or not Bob is trying to marry Steve is MUCH more engaging.

PEOPLE WAKE UP! We have important, real issues to fix. What are we afraid of, that gay creates gay? If that were the case, where are these gay people coming from? Are we concerned that marriage will no longer be a man, woman, 2.3 children, a dog, and the white picket fence? Good grief people, the average family consists of a single mom and several children. Could we “straights” screw up marriage anymore than we have? But, at least we have the option to marry, even though the lack of marital commitment in this country sickens me. Do any of you know a divorced couple? That question is laughable, because it would be easier to count the few happily married people that you know.

I’m going to end my rant with this..We need to stay out of each others bedrooms and worry about our own personal lives. For anyone who wants to shout a religious quote at me, I have a great relationship with God, but do not dare anyone HERE judge me or anyone else. That’s not your place. If you have faith; then I’m sure you know that God will look at the good & bad that each of us do here on earth. So, wipe off your own hands before throwing rocks at others. Don’t let us take a step backwards; let’s take a look at some real issues.

…Why do I bring this up, you ask? Wellll, you brought up that you're always trying to find the story behind the story of our cultural downward spiral, that there is a village mentality about certain things everywhere you travel, and you seem to be infatuated with Madonna's "sex" book and the cultural phenomenon that can be related to it…

…Stop looking for answers from someone else (i.e. Camille Paglia) and start thinking about how you would answer your own questions. Only you are the expert on you. The experts are experts on themselves and what they have experienced. Only you have experienced your life.
Therefore, only you can EXPRESS YOURSELF…

From Amanda Palmer’s November 4, 2008 blog…

my household all left around 11 to walk down the street together to our local polling station....
i've never seen anything like it - the line was around the block. hundreds of people came out.

when i voted in 2004 the line was about 10 minutes.

we waited over two and a half hours to vote - and we were SO FUCKING HAPPY to wait.

volunteers were passing out donuts. there were lots of wheelchairs and crutches. lots of people had their teeny kids with them.

i live in a predominantly black and senior citizen neighborhood in boston. lots of folks, all different.

rich south end folks, poor working class folks, wicked old folks.

when we were towards the front of the line, this 25-year old black kid came out of the voting booth and yelled
"My FIRST FRICKIN VOTE, ladies and gentlemen! OBAMA!" and everyone burst into applause.

FUCK! yes!!!
when i filled in that oval, tears came to my eyes.

mother FUCKER.....

i can't wait. i can't wait.

please, let this be the beginning of something new.

well, i guess itll be another four years until i can legally marry my girlfriend in our homestate florida.

i just dont understand that people dont recognize that everyone have the right to get married and start a family, regardless of their sexual orientation. everyone has a right to be happy, it SHOULDNT matter if youre gay or straight, but unfortunately, in this country, it does.

i hope you and your girlfriend will find a way to get married and adopt, because we ALL deserve to be happy and married if we want.

I'm Canadian but followed the whole political stuff in America the whole way. Great job on electing a great man as President but WTF???? Why do people freak out so much on gay marriages. Its sad to see that a step back has been made. For those who already got married, I'm hoping you will be able to stay married. Love is love. Wether you are gay, straight, bi , who cares!!!! Its ok for straight people to get married 17 times because they just love wearing that dress and tux but its not okay for gay people to finally have the right to proclaim theyre love for one another???? Lets hope someday everyone will be on the same page and will see that being gay is not an illness, a crime or a trend...its a way of life and you all deserve to be supported!!!!!!!!!!

I completely agree because love is exactly that LOVE. Just because a woman loves a woman doesn't make them incapable of raising a beautiful and well taught child. In all honesty I feel as though God made women to excel in ALL things and men obviously realized that which is why women were held back as long as we were.
There are sooo many children also being raised by only 1 parent therefore I think if 2 women were to raise a child then that child would grow up to conquer the world!

Obama was the best step that America could take and hopefully things will change because people cannot tell a woman its against the law to marry another woman because in all honesty 2 women together keeps another man alive.
LOL
