Saturday, November 15, 2008
I posted a blog last week that angered some people who didn't know how to read properly, I then wasted my own time defending myself and now I regret that.

There is a fine line that distinguishes the difference between exercising our freedom of expression and offending others, for example the debate regarding freedom of speech vs. hate speech.... i feel that this principle should apply to protestors also. It's a pity that some groups feel the need to assault people as opposed to fighting with words.

Whenever I feel the need to vent about something that feels unfair to me I reach for my computer, I don't run out of the house with abusive intentions. I don't expect everyone to react the same way, but I do expect people to respect each other. Maybe that's my first mistake? It seems lately I am learning that there are too many people who put another species before their fellow man and that's sad. I don't wear fur, but I don't think I have the right to ATTACK those who do. No one has that right.

PETA should focus their efforts on educating people on what they believe are injustices instead of seeking press via harassing those in the limelight. I received an apology too many days late from the PETA folks (the blog removal was too little too late) and today I'm pissed at the bag of flour thrown on Lindsay last night. Not because I got powdered down, but because the girl who threw it acted like an animal herself. I take that back, it's an insult to animals to group her in with them, my dog is FAR more civilized than that person. I would have more respect for them if they didn't use other people to get their point across. Lindsay, Mary Kate, Ashley Olsen, Anna Wintour and the rest of the targeted celebrities aren't the problem, I'm pretty sure they're not the only ones wearing fur, in fact, they should be appreciated by PETA for giving them a target. If it weren't for them, who would get them press?????

I know I'm probably going to get a lot of angry emails in response, but I don't really care. I got enough last week for no reason so I'm more than happy to ignore the nastiness after seeing what I saw last night. I'm not about to throw on a fur coat in retaliation, but had I had one within reach, I'm not sure I would have walked away from it.

p.s. when was the last time you saw an animal attack one of its own in defense of a human? hmmmmm..... that's one to grow on!

p.s.s. i think there are plenty of families that could have used that flour for a meal. nice job, lady.

You are not only beautiful inside and out - your one of the smartest girls around! Much love to you and Lindsay! Wish we'd all keep our battles confined to our computers- it would be a much safer world!
I love the way you think- I laughed my ass off towards the end! Brilliant!

I respect your words, Sam, but I don't think people have to choose between gay rights and animals rights. We can have both. It is a terrible shame that Prop 8 passed and we should all take a stand to try and correct this grave injustice.

However, I don't think lashing out at those who spend their time supporting a cause that is important to them personally, is constructive in any way. Just because it is not important to you, doesn't make it a waste of time for everyone else.

And yes, PETA is a B.S. fanatical organization that does not provide people with positive ways to make a difference. It hurts the animal rights movement because it makes everyone look like crazy fanatics. The ASPCA is a more scrupulous, effective organization.

I agree with you, Sapere and with you, Sam. I once wore a fake fur coat to a clubnight and got some people's unnecessary attitudes and nasty stares from lot of club goers who thought my fur coat was real. Some came up and asked me if it's real. I was scared because supposed if it's real, I don't know what they would have done to me that night.

I love animals and I'm for animals rights but there are some organizations that thought the only way to educate people is to point out people as villains and try to destructive their self images. That's why I am not a member of PETA. I've heard positive things about ASPCA. Thank Goodness it was just a wasted flour. I've seen people throwing worse things at other people wearing fur; for example, a can of oil which is a toxin to our skins.

I think it's not choosing between gay rights and animal rights, it's prioritizing these rights. And I don't think the idea is "gay rights," either. I think it's "human rights." And yes, seriously: they should be prioritized. When a rabbit gets even a G.E.D. I will say contrary, but until then, they are not the same as people.

And lashing out at someone promoting a cause is PLENTY productive. If a cause has gotten out of control, getting it back to an intelligent and responsible level becomes a cause in itself. I support that cause. PETA is just insane and needs to be stopped (notice I did not say animal rights activists, but PETA), and if people just ignore them that certainly won't happen.

That is why people have to speak out.

Hm. That's funny because I could swear they have an entire portion of their website devoted to all the way people can get involved, big or small as well as books dedicated to peaceful activism.

Well, the way they envisioned it was that your freedom began at you and ended where the next person's begins. Which really means gay marriage and other "hot button" issues should not even be relevant.

And PETA kills 2/3 of the animals they "save." Fuck them.

Too bad the CCF probably gave you that information. The same organization that has a campaign boycotting MADD as well as people dying from cancer as a direct result of wealthy companies like Phillip Morris.

Those are not the facts. Do your homework kid; you will be shocked by what you find out about the CCF.

People like the Fast Food industry, tobacco and alcohol industries fund them. Not the best people to point fingers. Just sayin.

I understand that everyone will have their own views and opinions about PETAs tactics but don't ever doubt that their work is for one good cause- animals do not deserve to be abused. You can't argue with that.

PETA (People for the Ethnical Treatment of Animals) has the right idea but sometimes they get fanatical in their causes. I heard once where they went to a fishing tournament and beat on the water with oars ( or whatever they could find) because they said it hurt the fish to be hooked! They also came to the circus when it was in my area and made a ruckus.

I do not believe in animal abuse but sometimes they carry it to an extreme.
Their current campaign:
They want to stop ice cream makers from using milk in the making of ice cream because it hurts cows. They want them to use breast milk.....yes, breat milk. Because the poor cows are being impregnated aganst their wills in order to produce milk.
Now why would we want to eat ice cream that was made with someone's breat milk?? How would we know what was in it?? No thank you!!

Yes they have done some great things like getting many of the top companies to stop animal testing. But to go after people wearing fur is just something they might as well give up. People have worn it for centuries. I received a letter in the mail recently from them where they claim that domestic animals (cats and dogs too) in China are being used in the fur industry. Now if this is true, then that needs to be stopped. I am sorry but when I look at my beautiful cats and think of someone wanting to wear them it makes me sick especially after reading the account of how they get the fur.

http://www. peta. org/feat/ChineseFurFarms/index. asp

Yes, there are good and bad in all activist organizations but PETA to me seems to be overly fanatical in the way they go about things.

Very well said, Samantha! My hats off to you, once again...First, it was the "cockroaches" and now the "animal" acting out on her total stupidity for PETA!...Its really sad and pathetic for PETA; stooping so low (obviously NOT their 1st time!) AND you are right again - that bag of flour could have been put to more meaningful use; feeding lots of families...*sigh*

Hope Lindsay and you are OK - Once again, ignore them 'uncivilized' species...they are just NOT worthy of even a split second of both yours and Lindsay's time!

Stay well and strong, dear Sam.

What are you talking about 'it was only flour'? Who the hell are you to think that it is alright to assult someone like that? Regardless of what the item was that was tossed on poor Lindsay, it is assault. Go ahead, grab a dictionary and look up the word assault. "Not only violence, but any physical contact with another person without their consent." I highly doubt this psycho who threw the flour onto Lindsay had her permission to do so. If it had've happened to me I'd be charging the perpetrator with assault. How humiliating for ANYONE to have that happen to them. One would be embarrassed and humiliated--the equivalent of having a drink poured on your head. RIDICULOUS. You, Ree Ree, need to get a grip, on what's acceptable and what's not.

true. It was truly only flour. It didn't hurt Lindsay. It may have damaged her coat. But celebrities are celebrities for a reason. They have plenty of money. Although I am against fur coats and pro animal rights, I understand that what the protester did was wrong, but I do realize how frustration can cause people to do things they normal wouldn't do or rationalize what they do. At least the protester didn't egg her or throw something harmful at her. Imagine if the protester had thrown acid. That would be definitely detrimental. But flour is truly not that bad. Gov Schwarzenegger (sp? sorry about that) got egged once while walking through the California folks. I don't think that person was caught. And Arnold just kept walking with a smile even though there was egg all over his expensive suit.

Alright, that's a great quote-and I'm glad to see a blog like this. I have a hard time keeping up with celebrity related activities because, well, there's just so much standardized tripe. And the great vat of pretty people with enough power to influence the masses-well, it seems like they rarely actually say anything with much grit at all.

But ma'am, you're nailing something here/don't stop. Many advocates/changemongers seem to be creating more issues than they are solving; lots of pride-driven martyrdom and various shades of wtf-ery.

I can't imagine, you know, what'd it be like to be walking down the street and some fool throws flour over me. But if that did happen, there would be little press concerning it all-which is another fine point that you've relayed here--celebrities are used to make a media cover story that they couldn't make on their own.

I think that's a heavy point that needs to be properly conveyed and reinforced in the news, ma'am.

Famous/high profile sorts should unite/revolt and bring forth a brand new media/news venue, it's not like people wouldn't tune in.

Samantha, you're right. If someone (PETA) wants others to stop doing something (wearing fur), physically assaulting them is the wrong approach. I don't think that throwing a bag of flour at someone would make anyone stop doing anything. It is offensive and it would cause a defensive reaction. If a person assaults someone, the person being assaulted probably doesn’t think; “I should do what this other person wants me to do, because they assaulted me.” The response would probably be more like; “This person just assaulted me, so I’m going to fight back in self defense and knock their ass into unconsciousness with a swift blow to their head to prevent them from assaulting me again.

ALL ANIMALS have the same parts
It appears as if you and Lindsay took the “People for the Ethical Treatment of Humans” approach and didn’t try to knock that person into unconsciousness or take off your shoes and throw them at the attacker in self defense. You took the civilized approach and commenced with an intelligent discussion at your blog. I think humans as a species should act more civilized (communicate with words) and take a less animalistic approach (throwing bags of flour) when there is a disagreement. The world would be a more beautiful place if everyone took this approach.

 Tony Blair flour bombed
This incident reminds me of that time in 2004 when Ron Davis and Guy Harrison threw flour bombs at Prime Minister Tony Blair at the House of Commons despite a bullet-proof security screen being installed earlier that year. These assaulters were convicted of disorderly conduct and fined 500 to 600 pounds (about 900 to 1000 dollars). The government probably won’t convict and fine the person that threw a flour bomb at Lindsay, but the perpetrator deserves the same punishment (to persuade them in a civilized manner from doing the same thing again).

P.S. In most jurisdictions, defense of self or of others is an affirmative defense to criminal charges for an act of violence. It acts to provide complete justification when the degree of violence used is comparable or proportionate to the threat faced.

I read the story about what happened in Paris last night. I'm glad you girls weren't hurt but here is thing: I think celebrities have the spot light and have to be careful about when, where and how they subject themselves to that spot light. Fur wearing does attract the nuts and the simple solution (until security is beefed up) for now, is not to wear your furs in public.

PETA goes way too far. Throwing that bag of flour just shows how low they will go to try and get a point(less) across. Not too long ago they were really after the "Trollsen" twins wearing masks like little children. Come on grow the fuck up. They will never stop and they need to change their tactics of how to get their point across. Yeah you are right they do need to focus on educating. Maybe be more concerned about the vegan side or focus on the cruelty of animals. They act liike we are killing the last animal on this earth when most of these animals reproduce faster and more than us humans. To some people its a way of life to live off animals. People up here hunt like crazy. My husband said I wonder what would happen if they saw my deer head on the wall? They would die of a heart attack I said. But they are right we are wrong we are the stupid humans for eating and wearing animal products. They have no respect for the ones that choose to do their own thing.
PETA needs a new mission!

The person who threw the flour is only looking for some publicity, not for PETA but for themselves. She has obviously never been taught what's right from wrong.

Unfortunately in this media crazed world that we now live in; of which I am party because I'm reading your blog; there is the misconception that celebrities are "everybody's property".
We are all guilty of fuelling the fire that makes celebs targets for such hatred - who hasn't looked on Youtube to see someone famous make a right fud of themselves?

Throwing the flour over Lindsay only highlights the ridiculous standards that are now apparent in society.
Was the female arrested for assault?

There is enough anger and hatred in the world today without this stupidity. It is high time that people grow up and realise we only have one life so we should live it as we please.

Take it easy. Have a dinner of Skips, Monster Munch, Hoola Hoops, Quavers, Square Crisps, Discos and After Eights. Washed down with some Irn Bru.

It..s scary sometimes. And it..s NOT the right way throwing flour on other people. What kind of behaviour is that????

wow amazing blog . i agree with everything you wrote and i read about the attack on lindsay today and felt that it was an absloutely horrible thing to do . the lady should have had respect for lindsay and relise that it is everyone's choice in what they would like to wear. i myself am a vegetarian and i made that decision to change but i don't go around trying to convert people into vegetarians . its just not what a normal person would do. she has actually made herself look bad infront of people by attacking lindsay like that because she is actually worse than the people who wear the fur. i hope you guys are ok and that you have a great weekend and hope that lady feels ashamed of herself now for doing that.

Wow that pic looks really scary! I am sure that was very frightening for Lindsay. There are alot of crazies out there who want to kill celebs. This woman should have thought of that before she assulted Linsday like that. I really disagree with her methods. I agree with her message though. You know I love you guys, I really support you and think you are way cool. But, fur is not cool.
You can wear faux fur and get the same look, so why wear the real thing when you know it's wrong?
PETA goes to extremes, but their heart is in the right place. I hope no one ever does that to Lindsay again, it is awful and that kind of crap doesn't make an organization look good, it makes it look crazy. Hope Lindsay is ok and you might want to tighten security so the next time people can't get that close to her.
Luv ya!!
