in chicago so it seems appropriate to post another of my new favourite songs.

STREET LIGHTS

you can find it under the playlist 808's and Heartbreak

i have always been a fan of mr. west. people may call him arrogant or whatever, but his antics never eclipse his talent. I met him when we were both artists signed to roc-a-fella records, he was already a respected/successful producer but hadn't yet finished college dropout. The next time we met was in LA when the label sent me out to LA to work with him. I walked into his hotel room and he was there with his jaw wired shut playing tracks off his album. I have to admit that I was confused, he was blasting Jesus Walks and I was thinking to myself, why the hell did they send this jewish kid out to work with a christian rapper???? He played me a couple of other songs and I realized that my second impression was off base and we got to work. Although we never really finished the songs we worked on I left with a great deal of respect for the man and he is still one of my favourite artists making music today. He is unapologetic, takes risks and delivers albums that aren't about a couple "radio" hits padded with filler. He makes full albums and this time has, in my opinion, put together a beautiful record that fulfills the promise made by the title.

yup, i don't think I can recall any other song recorded by a hip hop artist that has broken my heart the way joni mitchell, damien rice or nick drake can. I know I am placing him in strange company, but that's where this song falls in my ipod playlist. If you haven't listened to the track yet do so!

well, i was one of those who judged him based on what i heard about him, not based on his art... yeah i know.
just like your girl :)

"love lockdown" absolutely slashed my heart. i still kinda prepare when i hear that song on the radio because i get ultra short-term depression from it.

and i had totally judged your girl, too. until i saw one of her movies which, i think, was last year. then thought, oh wait, she is actually a good actor...

I really like Damien Rice. I first heard him - sitting in a movie theater with my friend... it was only a 15 second clip, but I was so moved by it that I went out the next day and bought the CD (o) - and wasn't disappointed. I didn't buy the second - I am still stuck on the first....

My mom used to listen to Joni Mitchell... I haven't in a while.

I am interested to listen to this song...

I hope you are having a nice week.

p.s. - Thanks for sharing your thoughts.... and music picks!

If you can back it up , there is nothing wrong with confidence. And this man backs it up. Besides , people are way different in private versus a public persona. A family friend got blasted for the same kind of thing way back when , but he backed it up , and now people see him as legendary. (I'm not telling your readers who) The same thing will happen down the line with Mr.West.
I raise a glass to a man with a wicked future ahead of him!

I love the way you write about music with such passion i have an article that was put on my desk about your mix tape and i have say a blind faith's can't find my way home and damien rice's cannonball have been on repeat every day lately with worse that cigarettes. Music is a limb for me an expression of every thing i do and am. I am never anywhere without an mp3 player and just lately those 3 songs are keeping me alive.

Have a wonderful hannukah and spend some time being kind to yourself.

Cheers

Haven't had a chance to hear the song yet. It seems over here (Europe) the MySpace playlist thing works different than in the US- or something's different anyway... The same thing happens with your player. I guess you probably heard that before. So I can't actually find Street Lights there and also have to head out now. Which means I'll have to try to find the song somewhere else later today. And you're really making me very curious with your comparison of this song to Damien Rice's heart breaking songs. Because if there's one song that can just about break my heart every time I hear it it's his The Blower's Daughter... Strange company indeed, but if the song puts him there, than that's okay by me ;)

Thank you for this song, and for your explanation. I like to know where and how passions take their form, and you told us with beautiful words.

I also like to get to know you better every day, and probably what you said about him can be said about you too - you're unapologetic, and take risks, and you're a marvelous artist with an open mind, receptive to different signals and suggestions.

PS I only listened to a few of your tracks, but your voice breaks my heart too.

Hey! I don't listen to MTV and club's "music", it is without emotions, hip-hop? I liked only English singer "I'm walking away from troubles in my live..", and one dead Afro-American from trio, they were the pioneers in this field, hip-hop is the down music, I mean - about pain of growing through the white and black boderline. My ringtone is "O'Sole Mio" and it is GREAT! Why you point out that you are Jewish and that singer is Christian? I wonder - Jesus is the only for all.
Do you afraid to go to hell next?

Here's a picture that I posted at your November 8, 2008 blog....
ILY... heart & ice cream shadowlamp at postwartrade.com
Here are some lyrics from Amanda Palmer's (of The Dresden Dolls) "Leeds United" that I expanded upon at at her October 7, 2008 blog....

“we watch you your EXPERT DOUBLE EXS
it's just like you to paint those whiter fences

its so polite its so polite its offensive its offensive
its so unright its so unright it's a technical accept it
but who needs love when there's law & order
and who needs love when there's southern comfort
and who needs love at all

we stalk you your EXPERT DOUBLE EXS
we oxidize you in your sleep there's no exit there's no exit”
 808s & heartbreak
Above is a picture of the alternate cover of Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak album from which your song of the day "Street Lights" is from.
Below is another picture that I posted at your November 8, 2008 blog in addition to the Dresden Dolls photo above....

P.S.
This comment may or may not have anything to do with the comment I left at your October 20, 2008 blog about Kayne West's "Love Lockdown".

Hey Samantha! I love the song of the day, in fact I love the whole album and I can tell you I'm a very new fan of Mr. West cause I really didn't like hip hop music but a friend of mine invited me to Kanye's concert here in Mexico City like a month ago or so and I was very surprised that I like the show a lot, since then I've been a fan of him.

Ohh and surfing in youtube I found some of your songs and I gotta say that you have a pretty darn nice voice, I really like your "kiss me" song, it's a pity that in your playlist there's the edited version :-(

Ok enough said, have a great weekend and catch up some needed sleep ;-)
