Current mood:  annoyed
After I read the article by Dusti Rhodes about the Houston Comedy scene my first reaction was "What the fuck was that?" but then I realized it was the Houston Press.  Not only does this article not support Houston comics, it sets the whole scene back 15 years.

Okay, if you wanted to write about Houston comics try researching a little.  As a journalist you would think that you would go outside the 610 loop.  There was absolutely no mention of Jim Holder, Olivia Arrington, Paul Pappas, Ray Barnett, Martin Walsh, Carolyn Agnew, Tom Webb (who has been running Comedy in da Hood forever), Craig Bush, Big Ed, Jerry Wayne (oops works for Satan can't interview him, didn't work for the patron saint of comics Marc Babbitt), Al D Freeman (yes he is one of us, annoying as he may be), Shayla Rivera, Jodi Ferdig, Joanne Coyote, Ryan Sperry, Peggy Amer, Matt Kirsh, Graig Warren, Jeff Burghart, Norm Mitchell, Pokey Simmons, Ezra, Ali, Keir, Sam Demaris, and of course Mois, Caroline Picard.  If I forgot someone please forgive me.  But then again, why would they, this article was not so much about the Houston Comedy Scene but more of a tribute to Marc Babbitt and a Pete Perrilli bashing.  We got it you loved Marc, hate Perrilli, got it, thanks.

Okay, now let's put this in perspective here.  I have no problem with either one of these guys, they both contribute nothing to my life or career, and most likely never will.  The glory days of "Babbitt's kids" are over and will not return, just like the Comedy Workshop and me wearing a size 5.  That is all it the past, we all had a good time and some of us moved on, actually working at our comedy careers.  Oh sure some of us, myself included, are nothing but road comics, not the heady intelligent folks of the glory days, so we are not included in the reindeer games.  But, then again, I haven't had a day job in ummmmm, a long fucking time.  I'm a working comic and all on that list of forgotten comics are as well.  We are actually making a living out comedy. We don't do the festival auditions, the competitions or choose to hangout and bitch about Pete and glorify Marc, because we are WORKING.

Hey Dusti good job finding the female comics baby.  What do you get nose bleed coming out of the loop?  You interviewed one that thinks that Paul Odo (Paul I love your comedy dude, so don't tense your ass up okay), is dreamy and that adds to the Houston comedy scene. What?  Plus, she is not even doing stand-up and as far as I'm concerned really never did.  And Sara please you don't want to stay in a condo "with guys talking about whacking off", what the hell are you talking about???  I've been a touring road comic for 12 years now and that has never happened -- NEVER.  And Sara, when is the last time you did the road?  It's a damn shame to waste that talent.  I've stayed in plenty condo's and most of these guys are true professionals and stick to themselves, this ain't the 90's kids.  If you handle yourself properly they get it. Time's have change and we are all grown up.

So the next time someone wants to do an article on "The Houston Comedy Scene", can you drive down the road and contact the real comics???

Since when does the media do a article that shows the full story. They write whatever they can to make them look good and help their career.

It's a never ending battle with these Houston Press guys. They couldn't even get my name right when they were bashing my Houston Chronicle Blog. We've been going back and forth ever since. My turn again...

I heard about that dude. I actually thought about writing Ms. Rhodes, but I would rather have a face to face sit down with her. I also want to ask her if her parents favorite band is ZZ Top. Don't you think it would be fun ReyRey for me to have a good ole fashion face to face talk with Dusti. Whatcha think? Please feel free to insert very evil laugh here. I'll be back in town on the 11th of June, why, because I'm on the road. Oh, I'm not in a condo, I'm staying at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Ft. Myers, Florida---God I love my job. See you soon. I'll be at Danny's on the 13th taping the Comedy Time deal, come have a beer with me.

It would be a waste of your time talking to her. I wrote a letter to the editor and got a response from Dusti. She stands behind her article and stated the following:

"The purpose of the article was to present the comedy scene in Houston as it
is, from both the good and the bad. Not to paint a romantic or disenchanted view of it."

Yeah u right. Maybe that's what they need a good ole fashion "ass whippin". Seriously though this doesn't surprise me at all. Non working comics get press and we get, ummmm nothing. I'm tired of it and so should all of us that work at our craft.

I was hoping it was sarcasm, so I'm glad you clarified that, point taken. I know Ms. Rhodes is standing by her article, as wrong as it is, but then that's the media today. Heaven forbid they write the truth.

When she interviewed me, I told her to go down to the Showcase and talk to Danny and some of the folks down there, because there was more to the Houston 'scene' than just the people she knew. I don't think it would have occured to her otherwise. So, it could have been worse.....

Thanks Mike, but like I replied to Dianne, news media today can't write the truth, it's against their code for some reason. And like I said in my blog, they don't go outside the loop. Safe travels my friend.

i dont understand how this girl thinks she can write about how an open mic is run if she doesnt even watch the shows?

ive seen this kid come into the laff stop, walk right through the show, straight into the showroom to hang on paul's every word, paul hits the stage, she comes out and watches, paul gets off the stage, she runs back into the showroom.

hows that for some good research?

Not surprised to hear that. I hope that boy is keeping a scrapbook, oh no, she's keeping the book. She says she only "picked" a character, yeah right. You could tell by the writing who she was interested in and it ain't the Houston Comedy Scene.
