I think today will be the first ever blog that I write ... as i'm furious. fuming. angry beyond words.

Thank god for blogs because I can say whatever the F.. i want to .

So basically, I got a call recently that some shmuck from the Wall Street Journal wanted to do an article about me. He interviewed some people at my label and then asked to talk to me on the phone. I talked to this guy for an hour, told him every detail of my journey so far in music...

Here's Lesson 1 for me in Media - The writer will use whatever quote he wants of yours to make it fit his 'angle'. This loser was desperate for a good story... he knew what he wanted to write before he ever even talked to me.

The guy's angle is this : that I am a complete phony and fake and a pawn of my record label in some brilliant marketing scheme.

IS this guy completely insane. You think it's that easy? That you get signed and suddenly everything's taken care of for you!!!??
DO you think that my record label came to my house, my bathroom! and told me what songs to sing and told me that in a matter of weeks i'd be some 'youtube ' phenom??!?!

Wake up - I am GRATEFUL to be signed but you know what, Labels don't come to your house, hold your hand, and direct youtube videos for you .

I have so many dear friends who were signed to the biggest record labels in the world, made amazing albums and were DROPPED. that's it.....

I was STRANDED! I was completely lost and desperate... I knew that if i didn't do something, that I would end up like my friends.. that i would have this amazing record which would never see the light of day. Oh, and something else, as many of you have asked me, i STILL don't know when I get to actually release an album !! I mean, I 'm hoping that thanks to all of this good stuff lately, that it will get the chance it deserves but i still don't know for sure.

What hurts the most is that this loser took every genuine thing i said and made it sound like I am acting, that this whole thing is scripted. The dude is desperate to be onto the next ' lonely girl' or whatever.. i've actually never seeen that but its obvious that's what he wanted me to be.

I just had to write this because this is a place for me to say whatever's on my mind.. and I want you to hear what I have to say about this article.

It's really upsetting but i guess it's also a lesson learned.. this is my first taste of what media might be like.

OK. i'm not angry anymore :)

I guess it's that easy for me to get over it. good thing.. write songs or write blogs, i guess that's my therapy.

Since when did the WSJ become the authority on musicians? The writers should honestly stick to what they know best and keep their slander to the likes of the Enron execs...jeez.

I'm sure you know as your popularity skyrockets the attention in mainstream media (both positive and negative) is going to increase exponentially...it's just unfortunate that someone decided to try to flip the script on the whole situation and paint such a bad picture of you/hollywood records.

One thing is for sure, all your fans know that you are the genuine article, especially the ones that have been lucky enough to meet you in person (myself included)!

Keep it up, you have all of our support!

Marie, there are always going to be scumbags around. And the higher up you get, the more they are going to flock to you because in some sick way, that's how they find meaning in their lives.

Keep your head up, girl. You got plenty of fans behind you, and we're supporting you all the way. Don't get discouraged, don't get sidetracked... you're bigger than all those losers.

We really genuinely want to see you succeed. =)

That is so messed up. I have to tell that so-called "journalist" a piece of my mind. Thank you for sharing your music, and your thoughts. I was wondering the whole situation with your album and Hollywood Records (I had the same thoughts, when I saw that was the label you were signed to. You're not like many of the artists there!). Like you said, so many artists get signed and then get their music shelved at the label with little chances it'll ever be heard. You're way too talented for that to happen.

This article sounds like it's very similar to what was written about fledging artist Amanda Latona in the New York Times Magazine back in 2002; the writer basically skewed everything to a bias point of view and made her look like the next Britney-in-training. Isn't there some sort of law against this libel, unethical type of journalism? These people need to stop the hateration.

I found you through the WSJ article and I have to agree the "angle" the writer took is less than flattering. I also read the review you mentioned from "billboard."

In the WSJ article, are you saying you don't agree with the part of Hollywood Records helping you devise your Internet strategy which broke you on Youtube? If you took it upon yourself to play covers on Youtube that was a brilliant move...kudos to you !!!

Which part(s) of the WSJ article don't you agree with?

You have every right to be upset. Some people will do anything to promote their own career, including hurting others. The only consolation I can offer is that I believe that it takes a good heart to live a happy life, so this individual is also hurting himself.

Marie’…

I read the WSJ article online and my reaction is that these so-called “journalists” basically have some ill-driven motives to bring you down…these scumbags even go so far as to sketch a shady criminal-like portrait of you, which is totally uncalled for…The truth is: you wanted your music to reach a larger audience; there is no dishonesty and harm in that. I am grateful to see that you handled yourself with great dignity towards these pathetic “writers.” All your loyal fans know that you are truthful and everything you say comes directly from your heart. Continue making meaningful music and stay positive…

Well! Glad you got that off your chest.

What's that old saying?? *Any publicity* is good publicity. That is the bottom line here I think. To have a front page article in a top national newspaper. Not bad. Now -that said - just what was the story line in the WSJ? It wasn't about you playing a trick, it was about your record label since 2005 helping strategize using MySpace to advance you. Maybe exagerated, maybe not. But your tears seem to be crocidile tears. You don't seem the victim here.

Perhaps the WSJ story isn't about you. Perhaps its about how a commercial enterprise used or aided you in using MySpace to help you gain recognition. I don't fault you for that. You're right, I think, that you achieved what you did by tenacity and good for you in that. But it is still an interesting angle in the WSJ and worthy of publishing. The WSJ is rather good at surfacing businesses who are saying one thing (or not saying anything) while doing something else. That is their story. It is not about you so much. They, for instance, led with *a lot* critical articles about Enron for months before the story took root and Enron collapsed. They blew the whistle and said somehthing was going on with Enron that wasn't what it seemed. Your record label isn't Enron, but there was one thing being presented on MySpace while something else was going on in the background.

Good luck -- again, any publicity is good publicity.

Marie, as I told you before, please watch every step you take. This is just the beginning and like you said yourself, labels dont care about shit, its all about the money. I know people, who made songs for movies and what not, showed up in some of the most "famous" magazine in germany and got dropped because the album didnt sell as planned.

For one, I am grateful that you posted unfold on youtube. You know whats screwed up!?!, as soon as I saw the clip I was thinking about your album and what effect it might have. Damnit, I just want to enjoy your music like I always did. But, I am sometimes so focused on you getting were you are supposed to be that I start to forget about YOU!!!

However, there are people who arent able to handle someones success and who will try to bring you to your knees. Two words: FUCK THEM!!! I mean really, what the hell do they want!?!

In some way I can understand them. Its their job to bring in and sell interesting stories and if they are not able to find anything "worth" writing about they make things up...it doesnt matter if those things are true or not...THEY SELL...and they are able to feed their kids.

On the other hand...hmm...I dont really know what on the other hand. They bring the spotlight to you, they push you to the limit, they help you to promote ourself. This sounds soooo much...like bulllshit...but you l am sure you know what I mean!?!

I am not saying that this guy has the right to write whatever he wants about you but you as an artist you dont have a lot of control and you will not be able to do anything about it. I think you have to get used to this kind of things.

Marie, for the same reason I asked you not to forget about us. I know that you will never forget about us but one day you are going to get to a point were you will have to take a decision. This decision will be vital for your private life.

I mean look at your myspace site...9600 and something friends...in less than...crap...I dont know...a few months!!!! Soon you wont be able to answer personal questions...not because you dont want to...but just because there will be too many!!! Well, I am going to miss your quick responses to my ohh so drunk messages.

I could go on like this for hours but hey, lets dont!!!

Please, choose your steps wisely, listen to your dad, even though they sometimes talk strange things...AND MOST OF ALL...if everything else fails...you always going to have a job in my company. You will have to move to Chile...but it isnt as bad as it sounds. Ok, ok...just kidding...everything will turn out great.

OK, enough bla bla bla...

Besos y un Abrazo,

Gordon

All I have to say is...you're making music that won't phase out in a couple of months and your fans adore your music for a reason. Who really gives what that guy wrote about you when your talent is shown right on the "self-recorded" videos? It's frustrating when people have to be dishonest to make a living, but fans recognize your talent not your record label or whatever side story to smear your image. You'll be all right... :)

I'd like to hear that response as well, there's a bit of dialogue going on in the musician world about that article and it has definitely painted this girl in a particular way, which if true, would really make her look desperate BUUUUUUT!!!!!!!.....

Before anyone freaks out, know that I have also experienced how the press can be, and how much they are looking for things to fit the slant they want to present, so* I'm looking for more info here, not trying to point fingers.*

It could EASILY be that the reporter is in his own way doing EXACTLY what he appears to be saying she is doing, but because he's at the WSJ, he has a credibility to many people that will overshadow any protests she might make.....so he's trying to move his own star along, by telling everyone that she's being underhanded and the way she moves HER'S along, see what I mean?

Reporter's stars rise and fall too......

I'm on the fence, just looking for more info, but I'm prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt simply based on my own experiences....

Hi Marie,
I read the WSJ article which prompted me to watch your videos on YouTube and check-out your MySpace page. (you have a NEW FAN b/c of the WSJ article!!!)

Anyways,

I think that the WSJ confuses the issue. The WSJ’s angle is that media conglomerates are using home-grown/personal forums for marketing. The WSJ talks about your relationship with Hollywood Records as if it automatically means success for your career. I think that your post clarifies that Hollywood Records represents you, but that doesn’t mean the label has suddenly given you millions of advertising dollars, a huge marketing campaign and an unlimited budget for music videos. The WSJ is basically saying that you have already made it; even though, in reality many talented artists are signed but are not given much support.
It makes me laugh that the WSJ says, “Hollywood Records helped DEVISE” your media strategy. Devise is such an evil scientist/ mastermind word. When in reality all you did was make some videos and post them. This doesn’t sound like a mastermind strategy, and your success on YouTube has little to do with the backing or big bucks of a record label. Many people have watched your videos and listened to your music because they enjoy it. There is no mastermind or huge media conglomerate behind that.

The WSJ’s angle should have been that YouTube is showing how there is a new trend in music in general. This is an age where web 2.0 technologies and even TV and the phone allow people to choose which artists will be successful or not. Think American Idol—millions of people vote on who should have a record deal. (This is web 2.0 music). YouTube in the future will probably act in the same way as American Idol but as a forum for more artists. Record executives will probably ask their artists to demo their stuff on YouTube to see if artists will actually be commercially viable. Popular artists will be chosen by how many “views” they get.
I think these videos show you are nothing but a genuine talent, we are in an era when computers and digital sound recording techniques can make singers appear like they have singing talent. The WSJ should have picked-up on these other trends (and been a lot nicer to you!!!!).

Best to you,

Laura
(sorry, posted to wrong blog entry first :)

When I saw that article on my way to work this morning, I was really excited that you were on the front page of the second most-subscribed-to newspaper in the country. I guess I've already come to discount the fact that journalists always fit their articles to some narrative, and it's not necessarily one that I would have chosen for the same set of facts (my friends who have seen me drunk are generally familiar with my rant that high schools should require students to witness non-sporting events and then read about them in the paper, just to experience the difference). Sometimes it's not even a very plausible narrative - e.g., the story that it's some dark secret that you didn't just start singing when you found youtube. I don't even particularly blame Smith and Lattman for waxing conspiratorial in an attempt to write something interesting on deadline.

What's the end result of this going to be? Nobody's going to stop listening to you because of it, and two million subscribers saw your name (above the fold! With an eye-catching picture!) this morning with the news that a lot of people keep going back to the Internet to hear your music. Maybe some of them will check you out and find out why that is. The ones who don't will just move on to tomorrow's feature story. Sure, it would be nice if journalists didn't caricature you - or, at least, if the caricatures were all flattering. But you really haven't lost anything today.

The WSJ article I believe says you were signed by hollywood records before you ever posted a song on youtube. If that is true, it would seem that WSJ has a fairly solid story. Either way you are very talented and I think most people would have never have heard of you if it were not for the WSJ. So make the most of the attention.

Filipinos have an old adage: "Only the ripest and sweetest fruit is hurled with pebbles so it will fall down from the tree". That's how it is when you have a gift. People will always try to sink you because they are afraid of their own inadequacies.
I find it quite strange that the Wall Street Journal will even care about pop music. Since when did they care about a burgeoning artist like you? Aren't they more involved with money, trade, and all that boring, sterile, inartistic element?
Besides, we, your fans, know the real story. Even if you do not become a mainstream act, you will always have the respect of those who truly admire you and your work. As long as you have believers like us, your artistic credibility is set.

I read your blog and the WSJ article and the comments your fans sent in. Some of them made some good points. First of all, You were on the front page of the WSJ!!!!!!!! Seriously, that doesn't happen to many of us! Imagine all the people reading the article, who don't necessarily go to MySpace, YouTube, read Billboard, etc. This brings you onto the radar of a whole new demographic. Publicity is publicity. It's up to you to take it and use it to your advantage. Also, while the article was about you, it was front page news, I think, because of the broader implications to the music industry. That's why it was in the WSJ. You're were right, they did have an agenda in calling you. They were using you as an example. You perfectly illustrated how the Internet is changing the music world. You didn't do anything wrong. To the contrary, kudos to you for "getting it". So hang in there; you'll develop a tough skin, hopefully. Think of all the amazing musicians who've been totally bashed in print. If there's a cool picture with the article, I cut it out, paste it up, and toss the article!

Ah, the power of the press . . . grrr . . . New York is definitely one of the most powerful markets out there, and people don't move there because it's boring.

That's great that you're able to get over it; that's very big and honorable of you. Like you said, it's just some schmuck looking to sell papers. I think that by now, w/ the beginning of the maturation of the internet, more and more people are turned off by the yellow press, running grossly exaggerated stories just for a quick buck (that's why newspapers are selling less and less subscriptions).

Hang in there. Continue being the down-to-earth person that you are. If people haven't figured out yet that you're for real, then they will in due time; no worries! :)

Keep your chin up, keep smiling, and keep on keeping on!! :D Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.

Frankly I don't care how you got started or when you got signed. I've been following your music for the past month or so and I don't believe in the few articles that I've read about you that you ever said you were unsigned or amateur. I also have to be perfectly honest, whether the YouTube videos were your idea or your record labels (I'm inclined to believe the former) is fairly unimportant. Because of them, you were heard and you've picked up a gathering. You have amazing talent and of course it doesn't hurt that you're beautiful as well. Those fans of yours that feel betrayed because they chose to believe something on their own will come back to you. How could they not? Keep playing, keep writing, and keep your chin up. You have literally tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of fans who adore your music and your attitude.

Few journalists nowadays have any credibility left.
Recently one finally admitted to being a member of a political think tank. (nytimes)
The wsj has ALWAYS been biased toward their financial interests.
And Fox, who doesn't know propaganda when they see it.
So, yes dear, ignore them, everyone else does.

aww man! Yeah one thing the media age has taught me is people are ruthless.
There will always be people out there trying to bring you down, but you are great and don't let anyone take that away!
This was just another article and just another opinion.
I know the article was completely unfair to you, but just ignore it and go on doing your thing!

Just read your blog and the article from the WSJ. Wow, you know what, your response was perfect to that -crap for brains- writer's article (Ethan Smith). In the entertainment industry people are always gonna talk shitola, try to use you to better themselves. Like that quote, "bad publicity is better than no publicity.", its kinda true. For people that are getting into the public eye and celebrity fame with their talents its gonna be something you have to deal with. The key is to deal with it correctly and accordingly. It's definetely a pain in da ass but ya gotta do it. And well Marié, you delt with it perfectly! Thats my 2 cents.... maybe 3 cents. Also, you are much smarter and prettier than that shmuck is. So you have nothing to worry about! lol.

Here's a pic of him in case anyone wants to put a spell on his dumb ass:

Marie,
Don't be depressed. I am impressed. Writers can be a mess but are formula none the less. When the the press stops writing about you then you need to find alternate outlets to confess.
It will be that way from here on out.....which is... eh anyones guess.
all the best,

whew! those people need to give respect..they shouldn't do that kind of thing to a person like you..not all people may walk to marie digby's path and its hardto be signed..i hate those media people like that, they made intrigues that is not true, they make the lives of an artist miserable..i hope someone teach them a lesson..

btw, i love the way you sing, im a big fan of yours. i've heard about you through my classmate..you ROCK!!!
