Well, not Boston entirely but there was a huge fuss this morning shutting down the Orange Line and now "devices" are being found all over the city. Everyone thought they were bombs, but we're now hearing that they aren't but no one is saying what they are.

Well, I am.

Check out this photo from Channel 4. You have to scroll down a bit to see it. Its the picture with the 6 MPH sign. Anyone recognize that? I did. Its a Mooninite from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. So I did some research, and what do I find?

This photo on Flickr. That's South Boston. Click through the photo stream for close-ups of the circuit boards. Its just LED Graffiti. Alternately, guerilla marketing from [adult swim]. That's what all this fuss is over. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

I just hope no bridges on my way home have been similiarly affected.

UPDATE!
The guy who posted the pics on Flickr wasn't responsible for the LED Graffiti. Seems the real people behind it are here. They are a guerilla marketing firm, so it looks like this was paid for advertising. Just thought you'd like to know.

UPDATE 2!
Boston.com is now reporting that Time-Warner is accepting responsibility for the ordeal in Boston. Something I knew almost 90 minutes ago and I'm sure others knew even earlier. The press waited until Time-Warner spoke out, though, before outing them. Funny how Time-Warner is part of the press, too. I'm sure that's just coincidental.

Repeat after me, authorities. L-E-D. Not I-E-D. Get it?

UPDATE 3!
Found this on LiveJournal. I think that's pretty much the appropriate response.

UPDATE 4!
I've posted a [very long winded] reaction to this whole situation in case anyone cares.  I'd also like to say that I wish MySpace Blogs made it easier to link to single posts.

Those pesky mooninites are always causing trouble! Okay, but seriously, I know I'm not allowed to be amused and that this is really a pain in the ass for people. But it's amazing how the mainstream media seems to be completely clueless...guess none of them know what a mooninite is.

Its all bizarre and almost amusing if it wasn't being treated so seriously.  I remember people who made real-world replicas of the "?" boxes from Super Mario Bros. getting hit with bomb scares.  These things are up around the country.  I wonder what's going to happen to the other LED signs.

Those guys are everywhere. It just shows you what the power of Foreigner truly is.

Also, the pic in the Channel 4 link is of Ignignokt, and the Flickr ones are of Err.

Quoting from the time-warner statement:

"They have been in place for two to three weeks in Boston..."

Wow. It's really comforting to know that when something thought to be a bomb is placed in our fair city, it takes the police three weeks to notice.

I am going to fly to California and try a similar campaign using incandescent light bulbs. Promise me you will write to me when I am in jail.

Welcome Boston.com readers!  Wait, there are Boston.com readers?  Well, that's cool.

Seriously, though,  I'm feeling very amused that my blog got some mention on Boston.com.  Glad to see my momentary lapse in productivity meant something.  Especially since I'm still at the office making up for it. hehe.  My blog views today are already more than 1/3 of my views ever.  Not bad for what was meant to be frivilous blog.

Okay, enough patting myself on the back.  Its quite unseemly.

Oh, but someone I SHOULD pat on the back is Universal Hub.  They were following this story pretty closely through the day and posted the link to the Channel 4 pictures that got me started on this.

I want to wait to see what they are charging him with.  So far the official response has been an enormous overreaction.  Look, I get that they want to be better safe than sorry.  But by they time the shot the first Lite Brite with a water gun at 10am, they knew what they were dealing with.  The authorities caused the widespread panic by not simply announcing then and there that it was just an LED installation.  I don't really care if this was done for profit.  It could have just as easily been a reasonable art project.  There is no remote intent to cause panic here and more blame lies with the overhyping media than with some art student for any panic that was caused.

Keen, thanks for the informative post.  Wow. Well, that doesn't happen every day.  I work right across the street from Sullivan station but I took the bus this morning instead of the T, I think things had been going on for a while before I arrived and I hadn't even noticed all the firetrucks and police tape when I walked right by.
