The US tour is over and we’re back home getting ready for our 2nd Australian tour. That was such an extremely successful US tour for us and it truly was a great fucking feeling experiencing how our complete dedication to making The Raveonettes an ace live band finally paid off.

Some people still don’t get what we’re all about so let me explain just a little. When we started out in Copenhagen in 2001 our initial intention was to hire 2 stand-up drummers and an additional guitarist. We wanted the stand-up drummers because of our fascination with the raw and primal beats of The Cramps. We actually wanted female drummers who had a certain burlesque feel to them. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to find 2 drummers, cause we had a tour lined up, so we settled on one really amazing jazz drummer instead. For years we toured as a 4-piece and then as a 5-piece. When that started getting out of hand and the initial idea behind The Raveonettes seemed to get lost in drunken days and drugged-out nights, we decided to start all over again and did some touring as a duo and then finally as a 3-piece with the stand-up drummer we always wanted. Our beats have always been ridiculously simple cause that’s the way we like it, so when people write that we use "…boring, old drum-machines…", they’re partially right. Boring is just a shitty word for simple and the word old refers to that the fact we pretty much only use old jazz samples from Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Max Roach. We do however use many electronic drum samples as well. We love Suicide too hence the use of simple, raw electronic beats. Everything we do is made with computers and samples. We perform live using an Alesis HD 24 which runs all the beats, various percussion and sounds. We love electronic music such as Atari Teenage Riot, Primal Scream, Miss Kittin, Trentemoeller, Shizuo, Alec Empire and Nic Endo’s solo stuff. We’re 50% electronic and 50% organic(sorry I have no better words for it) and that’s the way it’s always been. We also have a deep fascination with surf music and the Pacific Ocean. The American West symbolizes a mystic and restless notion of the end of the world, perhaps the end of everything and the beginning a something new, a state of rebirth, if you will. It is the theme of many of our songs. We love the simple and powerful songwriting style of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens and a lot of our sound is borrowed from these two geniuses. If you listen to "Everyday" by Buddy Holly, you’ll hear the familiar glockenspiel and the simple "hands on knees" beat which is basically what we’re all about. Our fascination with noise comes from Sonic Youth and Atari Teenage Riot. We sometimes use noise as a background layer(Attack Of The Ghost Riders and Sad Transmission)like The Mary Chain used to do so beautifully but mostly we use noise as another solo instrument like Sonic Youth. Sometimes we go all out like Atari Teenage Riot and in my opinion ATR will always be the masters of noise, no doubt about it! Having said all this, I wanna make it clear that we’ve never been opposed to change either so whatever happens, happens!

These are exciting times in the music industry as the old regime has been torn down by newer and better powers. The worlds have changed and the artist is finally back in control of everything, the way it should have always been. This means that if you’re a prolific and creative band you can really please yourself and others by letting everything flow in a continuous stream of interesting music and that’s exactly what we intend to do! Why wait another year or two for new material from your favorite band when we now have the opportunity to release new tunes whenever we feel like it? That’s right, 2008 will see the release of not only "Lust Lust Lust" but also an additional 3 EP’s each containing 3-4 new tunes. The first EP is set for release in September, then October and the last one in November.. We have no idea what direction these EP’s will take as of yet but they’re all gonna be fucking brilliant! Basically think about the glorious year of 1977 when The Ramones released two of their best albums "Leave Home" and "Rocket To Russia", I wish bands would still do that. we’re taking it all back from the man! It’s time to be in control! Rave On!

What the fuck!?! That's the best news I've ever heard! 3 EP's! Thank you!

You sound like you're jazzed up, that you know who you are and you dig it! This text looks like a mission statement - direction set - and it rocks my socks off!

Go play!

Thanks for that eloquent statement of purpose. I love the idea that there is a meeting place between Buddy Holly and Sonic Youth - and that using noise as an element or instrument doesn't have to preclude melody and harmony. I just couldn't fathom Jim DeRogatis on his radio show dissing "Lust Lust Lust" and saying he'd rather just listen to the Jesus and Mary Chain. I bet he doesn't care if he orders a Coke and gets a Pepsi, either.

Love the EP idea, keep up the great work. Hope you get back to Florida soon!

Sune and Sharin,

Thank goodness that there are still people out here who "get it" - and know deep inside their hearts that you not only "get it" but "get it" in ways the majority of people who spend their lives listening to nothing but Top 40 crap just don't comprehend. My own statement to that effect (from your comments Mar. 27th) is "Once again, I was amazed - you truly understand what it's all about." And you do. I've had some message correspondence with other fans and am still trying to find time to write down my impressions of your last Bowery Ballroom show - and believe it or not, the sentiment that keeps coming up is how much you "get it"!

I've seen you at least three times in the past year and you continue to just get better and better. I love the stripped-down simplicity of Lust Lust Lust to the point where I have to force myself to listen to something else in the car because I'm afraid I'll wear the disc out. I'll be honest, after the (IMHO) somewhat over-produced (but still awesome) Pretty in Black I was a little concerned - but damned if you didn't go right over the top again with just the right mix and proportions on everything! Your influences show and they're all great ones.

Your live performances are intense and poignant, raw emotion pouring forth from the speakers like a sluicegate of lovelorn pain. It's not about having a 78-piece drumset, eight members, dancers, a Jumbotron screen, NASA-funded light-show, and/or hoochie dancers up on stage with you - it's about the music you make and what you make us experience. Keep it up!

Best of luck on the Austrailian tour, looking forward to the EPs, and just keep doing what you do best!

yes, guys- i see i see but i don't think you really have to explain this to anyone who really listens to your music or anyone who has seen you live. you present already what you're all about.

people who didn't get this yet are either not interested or really a bit slow with their thinking..

i love you and i always remember your fantastic gig in Berlin with a big smile on my face :)

Thank goodness!! I needed something like that.
I don't know how much time and energy I've wasted trying to explain to some people those exact things.

I hate the simplistic vision most of the people have about your music, and it really piss me off.
Well, I've seen you live as 4-piece, 5-piece and the actual line up band and I have to say that I honestly enjoyed everyone of them, but I'm very, very glad you took all the control back.

And the idea of releasing music in a more fluid way and break the boring 2/3 years cycles of album and tour is refreshing. I can't wait for it.

i adore buddy holly and even went to college in lubbock, texas. i have always adored your sound, partially because it is reminiscent of those simpler times. i LOVE the new line-up with just the two of you and a stand-up drummer. it sounded just as brilliant as the tours with 4 or 5. more intimate for sure (even though it was a packed sxsw show). the pacific sends a mystic calling to us as well. rave on!

Awesome blog! But I don't know though, I have to be entirely honest. You sound like an entirely different act from your first album. I thought Lust Lust Lust was recorded while you guys were being sedated, because 80% of the time your voices where just very soft, faint, very dreamlike. I couldn't really get into it. For example, when Dead Sound was first posted, I loved it so much I played it loud enough to record on a voice recorder so I could hear it always! It was very fast, very twangy, it had that awesome vibe to it. Now the album version....light and mellow. I think maybe my expectations weren't met because I was expecting noise like that old version of Dead Sound or the faster "Love on Barbed Wire" and was instead met with something entirely different.

You still kick ass though!

Your sound is timeless, and those who don't "get it" never will, and that's just fine. I don't feel that your sound is simplistic, but more along the lines of a "less is more" approach. Every sound has a purpose, which ultimately results in creating a Spector-esque "Wall of Sound"-- a sonic sledge-hammer. Also, I think it's great how you not only sample from the iconic musicians of the past, such as The Everly Brothers ("Here Comes Mary"), The Marketts/The Ventures ("Twilight"), The Shirelles ("The Christmas Song"), etc., but how your music and lyrics reflect a smiling on the outside/dying on the inside dynamic reminiscent of The Smiths...

THANK YOU for continuing to create incredible music, and I'm really looking forward to the EPs (Hopefully there will be the cover of Stereolab's "French Disko" on one of them, as well as your take, or sampling, of "Wild Weekend" by The Rebels, and "Devil's Angels" by Davie Allan & The Arrows).

Take Care!

Jeremy

"we’re taking it all back from the man!" reminds me of "Take It From The Man!" by the Brian Jonestown Massacre....not sure how they fit in but they are some great sounds too.

Also, any vinyl from Lust Lust Lust forward? I would love some!
