Hello and Blessings to anyone who knew Michael Griffen. Michael passed on in the early morning of January 7th, 2008. Michael was and still is one of my personal and musical heroes and the only person I can recall referring to as a hero in my life. He played freely improvised noise violin in the one of a kind queercore/punk/noise band Behead The Prophet No Lord Shall Live, in which I played drums. He is a legend in the Free-Improv/noise music scene, which is quite a minority in the musical population but stretches out internationally (the Boredoms would be at the most popular level of that genre). Noggin was Michael's Free-Improv noise duo, which he played in with Eric Ostrowski (former Bellingham resident and co-founder of the Show-Off Gallery) throughout the 1990's up until early 2007. Noggin pushed the limits of toleration amongst even indie/underground music appreciators, but always delivered an awe-inspiring performance of purely improvised and colorful cacophony that was without a doubt an immediate and present kaleidoscopic expression of sound.
Michael was a truly independent thinker and free soul that always welcomed new people into the field of noise music, regardless of experience or talent. He and his family are beacons of making music out of anything and taking it to the limit, showing the world that you don't have to have an "instrument" or be "talented" or trained to make sounds or songs, just a willingness to throw yourself into the world of sound with whatever is around you (taking the inanimate and animating it). Without a doubt I would say Michael lead his life with integrity and lived his life the way he wanted to without conforming to the majority.
I played in a number of improvised projects with Michael and had countless improvised sessions out at his family's home the 'Griffenshire,' next to the Nooksack River by Nugent's Corner. There is a deep history of many Bellingham residents who grew up musically being encouraged to join in free-improv sessions at the Griffenshire, especially young people still exploring music and their identity. Michael and his family; including his daughter Aral, son Adam, and ex-wife/friend Terry, have been a family to me (and many others) when I needed one that made me feel at home by including me and accepting me just as I am. Michael Griffen was an individual who truly embraced the oddities of life and I will miss his presence and never forget him. Bellingham filmmaker Peter Rand and I are currently working on a documentary on Michael that we hope to have out within a year chronicling his presence, musical and artistic works. Hopefully our film will inspire some folks and will grant Michael some of the attention he certainly deserved in his life (though he never asked for it). Thanks again Michael for inspiring, living a full life, being a true friend and raising a great family. Much Love, Respect and Blessings on your soul

Wow. This is sad to hear. Michael was one of the first musicians I met when I started playing in the late 80's. He was an inspiration. He will be missed.

Know that he died peacefully and on his own terms. I enjoyed a few lucid moments with him just before he passed on and it was very sweet. That's awesome that you played with Michael too. I know he has played with so many folks in the Bellingham community. Good to hear from you Shauna. You rock! Love- Yogoman

So Sad. I'm from Vancouver and have known Michael from over the years. I saw him in the fall of 2006 and he seemed in great sprits working on a screenplay and spending time in his cute family home at the base of Mount Baker. I truly inspirational soul.
rest well michael.

Yeah, that is an obviously great idea that I hadn't thought of yet so thank you Josh. I just sent a message to his family so we'll start communicating about a Memorial Show, where it will be and I'll definitely let you know. Thank you Josh for writing and expressing your thoughts/feelings about Michael. Will be good to meet you in person, Cheers- Jordan Rain

I for some reason assumed Michael would live forever. He seemed superhuman and immortal.Even during his last few years he didnt let anyone feel sorry for him or bad or even totally aware of the extent of his situation-Michael and Priya had an amazing chemistry that transcended all logic are were hoping to some day head out to Bellingham and jam out with the man but sadly that never happened- He will be totally missed and his inspiration and indent will always be there-Robert Price

Jordan, don't know if you saw the bulletin I posted about Michael passing away but I am so saddened by his passing. Michael was like one of the family. That great big punk family that I have. I enjoyed moments at Griffinshire myself. Especially the day my car got stolen from there. Lol. Michael was a legend in his own right. He'll be missed and loved eternally. Please pass on my condolences to the family. If you have a memorial show, play some noise for me. xoxo, Julie.

hi jordan,
i am so glad you were there sunday. i know for me, i hadn't seen him since september, and when we were rolling out mt baker hwy back then i was very sad - thinking that would be the last time i would see him.
i was personally glad i got one last visit in the saturday before he passed.
i look forward to seeing your movie. michael was so funny. on saturday we talked about lots of little things. one little thing came up was that film. he said something along the lines of 'it shouldn't be about me....' -gosh, even as he was dying he was still totally selfless. i mean, of course it is about you. sorry, but there does need to be a movie made about him, and i'm glad you and peter are doing it and taking your time to make sure it is a good one.
i enjoyed the time i spent talking with you last year, and let me know if we need to talk again now.
all the best,
eric

Thank you so much for doing that real site that people can post stuff at Adam, you rule! I'll still keep this one going just because lots of people use myspace but I am really thankful that you went ahead and made a legit site for the cause. You are a damn good son and wonderful human being. My Love- Jordan Rain

Another more recent thought is talking to the EMP in Seattle, (only of course with the Griffens' blessing) and doing some sort of exhibit on Michael and his life's work. It could be synonymous with the release of Peter and I's documentary on Michael, if both the Griffen's and the EMP were into the idea. It never hurts to ask. People need to see his work and what he gave to the world. Free-Improv music is tucked away in corners of the world overlooked and I don't think that is such a good thing. People need to understand why it is important to freely improvise through music and art and what Michael did with regularity was to encourage anyone to pick up any thing let alone an instrument and start making some damn noise, worry about making "music" later if you so desire. Simple, but fucking genius. We know how to fight and blow up the world already. Our world need's to learn how to play together.

Wow, that's really sad to hear. I remember going to shows and watching BTPNLSL, he was amazing to play with and watch as a performer. I'm sure he's busy rocking out with the big man up stairs right now. RIP

Hey Jordan, Christoher here , son of Michael, thank you for your wonderful comments about my dad. I grew up on him, back in the day as they say when we had the first multipule track recording capability with a Roberts reel to reel (c.1968) "sound on sound" it was called, seems about right considering his future in all kinds of sounds. Adam is still working through the archives of those tapes. Who knows what gems will be revealed.
