The Official Eternal Circle
Bob Dylan Tribute Monument F.A.Q.
(Frequently Asked Questions)

April 13, 2009

We would like to whole-heartedly thank everyone who signed
The Eternal Circle Online Petition so far for their support.  Since the petition’s launch, we have received some general inquiries we would like to address in this F.A.Q..  Naturally we welcome any feedback regarding our effort, but due to the overwhelming amount of inquiries we have received, we felt a F.A.Q. would be necessary as an addendum to the petition so as to address them all adequately.

1. Will tax dollars be used to subsidize Eternal Circle?

It is our absolute intention NOT to have tax dollars be used to subsidize Eternal Circle. Subsidies will come from private equity donations used to construct and maintain the monument and the surrounding parkland comprised in Eternal Circle.

2. What exactly do you have in mind with regard to a “art centerpiece” commemorating Bob Dylan?

At some point in time when appropriate, we anticipate holding a contest for design concepts open to artists, sculptors, architects, the general public, etc., for the Eternal Circle centerpiece.  One stipulation will be that the concept must NOT constitute a statue representing Bob Dylan’s likeness.

3. What about all the other greats including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Ramblin’ Jack Eliot, etc.?  Don’t they deserve accolades as well?

While we have enormous admiration for all other greats who preceded and succeeded Bob Dylan, we feel his contributions to the art of music and entertainment is an amalgamation of all in spirit, hence Eternal Circle’s direct association with Bob Dylan.  It has also been explicitly stated in the petition that Eternal Circle is all encompassing.

4. The city doesn’t generally erect monuments to living persons.  What makes Bob Dylan so special?

We are commemorating the specific event when Bob Dylan made a choice to pursue a personal epiphany.  Even though by virtue of this we are paying tribute to someone who happens to be living, Eternal Circle’s primary focus is to bring attention to the internal struggle we all possess when pursuing our own calling.  By setting such a precedent, Eternal Circle has great potential to be rewarding for inhabitants and visitors by providing sheer food for thought and inspiration.

5. What about persuading the city to be more musician-friendly in Washington Square Park instead?

Although not stated in the petition, our vision includes having Eternal Circle be a meeting ground all in the spirit and tradition of musicians and artists alike to come together and be free with themselves and their art as they once were, so as to recapture the historical essence and significance of the park which have been unfortunately lost over time.  Larger, more publicized events such as an annual concert series for an example, is also not out of the question.

6. Does Bob Dylan himself know about this? Isn’t he against such examples of idolatry and deification?  He seemed very much alive and well when I attended his concert recently.

We do not perceive our efforts as deifying Bob Dylan. This has also been explicitly stated in the petition.  We are merely expressing gratitude toward one particular success story.  The fact that he is still with us we see as irrelevant.  Furthermore, although it would be quite flattering if Bob Dylan approved or appreciated our efforts, Eternal Circle goes beyond the notion of recognizing his specific achievements.  It’s simply about the fact that he has achieved – something all New Yorkers and beyond all have the potential to do.  This is our celebration.  It is infinite.  We are all part of it and it is a part of us all – “it” being… Eternal Circle.

7. Where else can I find your presence on the Internet?

One stipulation will be that the concept must NOT constitute a statue representing Bob Dylan’s likeness.-Good! That was my ? glad the city fathers aren't trying to endorse the reincarnation of Paul Revere's horse or a statue of Bob for pigeons to poop on. Sure he would be too.

Well time for my bootheels to be wonder'en-Happy Trails-All the Best

Ok this sounds great thanks! Yes artists and free minds take back the park!
I was in town last summer solstice for music on the streets day..
But it should be always.. To much controll has been expended on the will of free thinking.

My husband can make a wonderful tribute sculpture for Bob. He incorporates symbolism, meaningful stuff like lyrics from Bob, etc.
