With Halloween right around the corner, I thought this was especially appropriate. My friend Aidan recently alerted me to a stunning development. A Star Wars character I created has inspired some fans to bring her to life!
Ailyn Vel was a character I developed in one of my Star Wars projects in 2005. I can't take all the credit, of course. The original illustration was done by my homeboy Joe Corroney, who in turn used model Anastasia Heonis as his inspiration.

Over at Cosplay.com, a foxy fan from Austria with the handle "SpaceInvader" has done up her own costume version of Ailyn. The amount of labor she put into not only duplicating the character's look but expanding it (with fatigues, boots, and a cool gun holster) is pretty impressive. I give it up to this girl. Now I'm half tempted to pack my bags and attend the Star Wars celebration in Europe next year.

In Star Wars, Ailyn is the daughter of a bounty hunter named Boba Fett, a second-tier character from the movies who's basically "the cool one" to like for closet Star Wars fans. Likewise, the term cosplay is the cool word for playing dress up. I dressed up as a Star Wars character for two Halloweens in my day, once as Wicket the Ewok when I was four, and later as Obi-Wan Kenobi when I was 17.

Double take.
Well, after checking out the link my friend sent me, I couldn't help myself. I did a search on Google for Ailyn Vel and it gets even more interesting. Someone over at Cosplay Lab apparently already beat this girl to the punch, albeit in a borderline 8mm homage.

"MysticDancer" does her best bounty hunter impression.
Another interesting thing I found was that a gamer by the name "Pahricida" at PCgamemods also made a playable "skin" of Ailyn for the Star Wars game Jedi Academy.

Ailyn recently played a big role in the Star Wars novel Bloodlines, so it seems like the character is taking off. She even has her own Myspace page! (Add me, damn it!) It's a strange feeling to see something you create take on a life of its own, but it doesn't serve any useful purpose to stay stunned forever, so you get used to it. Now I can't wait till she gets her own action figure! (w/limited edition bandwagon) ~ Abel G. Peña

Sigh... why Austria, schlechte Mädchen?
