Ok. So, I was watching GAC the other night and there was this show on called How Great Thou Art. It was a show filmed at the Grand Ol Opry House, and there were a ton of country artists singing their favorite gospel songs. Now, I grew up in a Baptist church so I'm familiar with most if not all of these songs. I, however, have never..Let ME REPEAT NEVER heard the song How Great Thou Art sung quite like I heard Carrie Underwood sing it. I don't care who you are or what your opinion is of her music, but that girl can SING!! Like she can sing so good, I wonder if she goes to bed every night and says to herself, "I'm SOOOO awesome." If I could sing like that, I would DEFINITELY say that to myself before I turned out the lights. If you get a chance to watch this show, I'm asking you NICELY to just listen to her. I got chill bumps. The modulation all thru the song freaks me out. She starts out pretty low, but she is in such control of her voice it blows my mind. I'm guessing she has never smoked a cigarette : )

Anyway, Hope you had a fun New Years Eve. I sat on my couch writing a song and eating a blizzard from Sonic. It was FUN! (ok maybe fun isn't the exact right adjective)..... But I hope you have a great year and here's to hoping 2009 kicks 2008's ass!!

You are soooo right about Carrie & her vocal abilities. She is so gifted....I am sure we are in for many years of 'awesome' music from her.

Wishing you the very best of everything in 2009!!!

I'll agree she CAN sing. She's great.

But she's NOT country she's pop.

I think more of you and a few other young ladies
that I would PAY MORE to see than Underwood.

If you look through my photos on my profile
I believe your'e on there performing and
Carrie Underwood sure the hell isn't!
When she comes on I go use the bathroom!
I go to the Opry for COUNTRY!
It ain't all about the voice ALL the time Sunny.

FORMAT is more important.

That's where the industry is mistaken
FORMAT AND STEEL GUITAR are more
important than vocal ability and appearance of the artist.

You asked people's opinions....your'e better than her.

meh ... so what, she can sing and look good on a video. Carrie CAN sing, I remember seeing her on the Super Sunday halftime show, and she pulled it off super duperly. But she can't write a song and has one tenth of one percent of the soul of Loretta Lynn. You are more deserving of fame and fortune than previously mentioned Trashville created star. She's part of the problem with country music.

Vocal talent doesn't equal "aswesome". Part I'd rather listen to Hank Sr. than Jim Reeves.

Hi Sunny, Yes Underwood can hit all the notes, and everything, but it just sounds to manufactured and mechanical to me. I'm sure she's a nice person, and everything, but I'd much rather listen to you sing. You are the real deal, and I can feel something from you when you sing. Heart and Soul come to mind. Best Wishes and Happy New Year! Celebrate '09 with Marty Fine.

Honestly I am not a Carrie Underwood fan for several reasons that I'll go into briefly. First, she's a purely country girl from BFE Oklahoma near Lake Eufaula who forgot where she came from apparently. Totally Hollywood Underwood! Second, she's been given everything as though she actaully worked hard to earn them. I'm still pissed that she's a member of the Grand Ole Opry after doing nothing to earn it. Even George Strait had to play all the local bars and clubs all throughout Texas and pay his dues before hitting it big.
All that being said, she does have the best voice in all music genres hands down!

ps It's about time you brought your ass back to Oklahoma!

YOU SERIOUSLY HAVE NO FREAKING CLUE!!!!!!!! HOW DARE U CALL OUT CARRIE UNDERWOOD FOR BEING TOO HOLLYWOOD AND FORGETTING HER ROOTS!

U SERIOUSLY OBVIOUSLY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT TRUE COUNTRY MUSIC! CARRIE IS A SUPERSTAR AND AS COUNTRY AS U CAN GET!

HER AMAZING CHARACTER AND KINDNESS OVERFLOWS AND SHINES OUT WHENEVER SHE PERFORMS OR IS INTERVIEWED! AND SHE NEVER EVER FORGETS WHERE SHE CAME FROM, HELLO! SHE ONLY MENTIONS ALL THE TIME HOW SHE LOVES HER HOMETOWN AND THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE! PLUS SHE'S HUMBLE AND ALWAYS GIVES CREDIT TO AMERICAN IDOL AND OTHER PEOPLE IN HER LIFE FOR HER GETTING WHERE SHE IS!

U PEOPLE SERIOUSLY NEED TO GROW UP AND STOP BEING SUCH IDIOTS! MAYBE NEXT TIME U'LL GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE SHOOTING OFF SOME IGNORANT BULL SPIT!

I APOLOGIZE FOR THIS GUY'S COMMENT SUNNY.

Vocal ability yes, but it doesn't make her country. And compared to a few of the pop divas she is just a mediocre pop singer.

I'm glad you wrote that, Sunny! You're a pretty awesome artist yourself - and the fact that you can say that about another artist, who generally performs in a field that might not be popular with all your fan base, is another sign of that. Well said.

Yep, amazing, she has a beautiful voice, she is a standout. We're not talking Taylor Swift who I think is an embarassment. Carrie Underwood is someone who can really sing, who came to her success on a different type of road, but I enjoy and appreciate her talent. Love the song How Great Thou Art, makes me cry everytime.

Happy New Year!

I haven't seen the show yet but will have to check it out. That particular hymn is a very meaningful one for me for a lot of reasons. I don't know that I would call Carrie a "country artist" either but she has a beauty in her voice that can't be compared with anyone else. And as someone else said, it's good that you can appreciate another artist's work.

I'm bummed that you're not coming to Lyons tho. I would have made the trip because it's about half to 3/4 an hour away. :( I think the trip would have been worth it.
Come back soon!

I found that video of her sing that on the gac website early last year, and immediate sent it to all my friends.

Her voice is perfect for that song, and the way she uses her vocals is absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!
I have never been a big fan of hers either, but watching that changed my opinion.

I will agree that Carrie has a wonderful voice, but how can you call her a "country" artist when she won't even perform at a rodeo? She walked away from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and even cancelled her appearance the the Grandaddy of them all....just how country is that?

Just turned on GAC and her video was just starting, talk about timing. Although Carrie is one of very few mainstream country artists that I like, I can't say it gave me chills. No doubt the girl can sing, especially since I think there are very few people that can pull off live performances anymore. I never buy someones album until I hear them sing live.

I can definitely remember several times hearing you sing certain songs that made me cry, "Band of Gold", "Mama's Opry" and "Sweet Dance" have all brought tears to my eyes.
Not only because of the lyrics, but you know how to deliver a song!
Carrie... smoke a cig, ha, I bet she doesn't even burp, fart or cuss.....
Does this mean your inspired to kick the habit??

Yeah she does have a great voice, but for me that is not everything. I'll take someone like you any day of the week just on heart and honesty. And you're probably right she has never had a cigarette or maybe even a shot of Jim Beam to cut down on that wind and roughen up those chords. Have a great 2009 hope to see you in Atlanta.

Oh yeah, she GITS it. And she GETS it, 'cause you can tell it's not the first time she's sung the song, and didn't just learn it for some 'tribute show'. Girl got spirit! BUT, for my money, this one's the winner...

OMG! I knew I liked you from the start! You and I met at the opry because of Carrie, and you are right. Not even Elvis could do that song as well as Carrie did. so many ppl agree! I really appreciate you saying that! don't know if you remember me here but you always do when you see me. You got my name wrong! LOL I think you're awesome too.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!

We're off to a good year already!

I guess the reason there is all kinds of music is...there's all kinds of folk to listen to it.
Carrie can sing that's for sure, but so can Celine Deon and Mariah Carey ~shrug~

This is a really good arrangement of "How Great Thou Art" but for my money.....I'll take Willie's version any day.

I'm not crazy about everything she sings, but she does have about the best voice on the planet. Maybe even better than me. That whole non-smoking thing goes a long way.

I head she is really sweet and humble, so I doubt she goes to bed saying she's awesome, but maybe she should start.
LOL!

That being said, perfect technique like Carrie has is not the only thing that's important.
A little bit of Texas Spirit and an amazing personality goes a long way too!

When somebody who can sing as beautiful as you do compliments somebody else's singing, you know they're good.
