Current mood:  content
okay, im going to level with all of you here... much as i always have. regarding alot of crap flying around these days regarding some hack press in Ireland, more specifically, some lame crap i said about "DJ's"...

Over the past couple of weeks, ive never really had the desire to defend some tablotic / "juicy" press, but i guess im sick of hearing about it... so might as well explain what little i feel obligated to remove any static it's caused.

during an onsluight of phoner interviews in a single night, i do recall being asked alot of questions that i felt i really had no answers to...  I honestly feel that the dance music scene needed a good bit of shaking up... sure, i bet there are thousands of people who will cling onto just about any written article and believe it to be fact. Well, wasn't really the case this time...

i could only have imagined people wouldnt read into it so much (let alone the interview wouldnt pick out all the stupid bits) and miss the point completely.

let me start by admitting.... i did not grow up in the EDM scene. I dont consider my career to be about "being a DJ". i dont have "DJ roots" . I never had any intention of becoming a DJ. and my conception of "DJ's" in general from this standpoint has always been... .. being forced into some nightclub when i would have rather stayed home, and watch some dood mash the "play / stop" button and occaisionally move a pitch slider.  Love it or hate it.... that's just been my conception of the traditional "dj".

mind you, im not a total fucking idiot, and i recognize talent when i see it.... and there are many talented DJ's out there for sure. In my eyes, those would be the individuals who utilize technology to deliver the music in ways that are both skillful and innovate, moreso than my vision of the "play/stop/pitch" DJ. To me, the club is about "the party" .... the people make the night... the DJ obviously needs to use that to his advantage, it's give and take.

okay, to say "all dj's are...."  etc etc, to be taken literally as this article did, was just painfully stupid and wrong on their behalf. So im not the worlds most eloquent person... any idiot can tell you that.  But the meaning behind the statement was "the concept that i recognize as being a "disc jockey"....

now, i can personally guarantee that this blog post is going to fling right back into the ugly pit it came from... the message boards, the forums, the... well whatever.

see it as a fail attempt at correcting a wrong, or backtracking, or just being plain hypocritical, i really dont give a fuck either way.... this statement isn't for you fucking elitist fuckheads who have nothing better to do with your internets. This is for the the people who appriciate what im doing, people who enjoy music, and is meant to assure those people that my intent was not to insult or belittle anyone or any group of people in particular.

on hindsight, it's really amazing what a 3 minute phone call to some random irish news paper can do.... hell... that thing made about 12 laps around the world in about 4 hours. now thats impressive.

at the end of the day, the music plays on. And thats what it's all about for me... to interview me about anything other than music... is stupid.  period.

joel, you have actually said what a lot of people are thinking. Thank fuck you have the balls to. I am a dj and if i want to call myself an electronic artist i have to create music electronically like a musician would. That is a skill this is not like dj'ing that you pick up in 6 months. I mess about on the decks and like to create soundtracks and listen to the real music that is coming from the good producers, but there no comparision between an electronic artist and a dj. Their different full stop. You did the community a favour cos there is just no quality control (apart from RESIDENT ADVISOR who keep it real !) in dance music..... its almost like you have to be really friendly with each other to keep the business going rather then it being about whether the music is really good or not... can you like make a comment about the crap producers who keep flooding us with low quality electronic productions of 4/4 beats that sound 1998 put together in 5 mins of production.....so that we can get some quality control going here too... i think its great that electronica is upping its game at the moment and we are getting some quality into the productions.... nice one man i'm glad you talked. FROM IRELAND ! p x

the middleman pushes the art/artist from unknown to world act faster than any magazine or newspaper can

nobody is forcing you to play nightclubs, and the whole play/start button and "occassional" pitch argument is tired. i obviously don't know you personally so i won't sit behind my computer and attempt to guess your real intentions behind all of this. i think this whole situation is funny, really.

keep doing what you do, i'll keep doing what i do. don't dumb down djs to be your personal puppet that simply fades in and out of tracks.

but i guess i'm just an elitist fuckhead because i do something that you consider to be wasteful. :D let me know if you want some real musical criticism and not just some fanboiz with too much gel in their hair and too much cologne wafting in their brain.

The only problem that I have with the terms "DJ" and "Artist" is that they are increasingly used interchangeably. A "DJ", in the traditional sense of the word, is not an artist. If a person is putting together a play-list composed primarily of other people's (artists) creations then they are not an artist - that person is a DJ. If a "DJ" puts his/her own creative twist on the music that they spin, (remixing or what-have-yous) then they can be considered an artist.

I love DJ's - I have no problem with them. Good DJ's have worked hard on their trade in order to seamlessly blend music in a way to where you don't know when a song starts or ends (seamless). There are a lot out there that do a great job at creating a fun atmosphere that is completely unique in the world that only they can create. The only problem I do have is when people consider them to be on the same level as the artists that initially created the music that they're spinning.

DJ's, if you are on the same level, pick up a keyboard and show it.

THANK you for refreshing the scene :D CHANGE WE NEED!!! YES WE CAN!!!

A turntable does not do the same thing as a keyboard or a synth. Nor does a guitar do the same thing as a keyboard.

I merely said Keyboard to prove a point. I could have listed every piece of musical equipment out there but that would be a bit dumb wouldn't it?

hey man whats with the challenge? how bout the atrtist go behind the decks and see how that goes??? I am a DJ and its my life! i live for music, all kinds! i spend thousands on music and hours picking through stacks of records to have music to mix on the fly for whatever the crowd wants. DJing is an art. mixing melodies of one song to the beat of another and creating something new! its not just playng other peoples music and taking credit...there are endless DJs who have spent years perfecting the craft. ask any DJ some DJs are great at producing songs but arent the best on the decks and vice versa.and some of the best DJs in the world are musicians look at Mark Farina,Chuck Love and Miguel Migs and so on...if it wasn't for us how would you know what you like? mau5 is awesome and he brings it for sure. i'm a huge fan! but please don't dis the craft i live for! peace and love DJ TODD P.

Well, Todd, I'm sorry if I offended you - that was not my intent. If you re-read what I wrote, you'll note that I'm not "dissing the craft". I'm merely stating that there is a fine line between "DJ" and "Artist". I already stated that I appreciate the craft, but I don't appreciate picking the music as much as I do the artist who create the music you pick - although, I do still appreciate it.

Who do you appreciate more - The person who performs the poem, or the poet? The performer has to be given credit because the performer conveys the emotions and the poets message while also adding their own spice to the mix. But, the performer would not exist, nor would the feelings the performer is conveying exist, without the poet that wrote the piece.

Terry Lee Brown is one of my favorite artists at the moment; He is an artist that spins his own music live. Jeff Mills, DJ Godfather, Aaron Carl (I'm partial to Detroit, lol) all make their own music and use a DJ tool to perform it. They are artists because they make their own music - Deadmau5 as well.

I'll accept your challenge. Eventually, when I make enough music to fill a 1 hour set, I will get behind the decks - that's pretty much my plan. I know it's going to take me a bit to learn how to blend from song to song, but I'm positive that I can do it. I'm sure that if I went to a party hosted by DJ Todd P that I would have a great time; I'm sure that I could learn a thing or two about mixing and bringing the energy required to keep the party going.

By the way, I know what I like because I know what I like. I also spend a lot of time searching for music that I like; searching for music that moves me. DJ's aren't the only way to find tasteful music.

The reason why things can easily be taken out of context is that words can be so interchangeable and what you interpret to be such meaning for such word can be slightly different for another.

For example, using the word "artist." Artist technically means -

1. A person who creates art.
2. A person who creates art as an occupation.
3. A follower of a pursuit in which skill comes by study or practice - the opposite of a theorist
4. a person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.
5. a person whose trade or profession requires a knowledge of an art-form.
6. a person whose work exhibits exceptional skill.
7. a person who is expert at trickery or deceit: He's an artist with cards.

How is "creating" and perfecting that skill not being an artist then? Whether or not you are the one who composed such song? A "DJ" is composing an environment, atmosphere by mixing, spinning and spewing it out for the crowd to consume by the moment. This takes skill and some may have more skill than another that doesn't necessarily mean that one is not an artist. So would you call a Symphony And Orchestra Composer not an artist? I suggest taking a peek at this (I am aware it is wiki but it gives you a peek into this argument that has been had well before "DJ's" and "Electronic Musicians" ever had a damn scene to pitch a b!tch about): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composer

There are obviously different types of skills for which to create art becoming an artist does not rely on the area of interest or medium of expression. Not everyone's medium of expression and creating is the same, so when someone hears a possible interpretation of demeaning another's developed skills...the need comes forth to rectify the situation and to validate the interpreted "dissed" art-form.

Honestly, Mau5 you said it best "eloquence" with words is absent. Art-forms vary and thank goodness for that because honestly who wants the same sh!t over and over.

The meaning of words are a product of their usage. The people that write dictionaries for the definitions of words by looking at how they are used in books and dialogue. For example, "Cute" used to be an insult; "Corn" used to be a broad term synonymous to grain. We can all note the modern differences from their earlier usages.

So what are you saying? ...That what was said is not an answer to why someone would take offense?? Because clearly it is a reason why folks get upset. What you are say or mean is not always going to be interpreted the way you intended. Simply put, you can't rant about folks not agreeing with you...it's redundant.

I see what you're saying and you're right. The terms that I'm using are a little screwy and mildly misleading. DJing definitely takes a honed skill and a heightened ear for music. Maybe "composer" instead of "artist"?

Agree... There for sure are different level's of skills and areas of expertise...which each involve different qualifications, skills, interests and varying amounts of practice. This would be a more sensible and truthful way to discuss it and it would be harder for folks to misinterpret misconstrue your intentions - words. If they do while doing it this way, well then they truly are the asshat.

Hey deadmau5,

I know you get this a lot im sure, but you are one of my main influences on making most EDM. And i definitely agree with everything you say about "DJs" . Im just like you, i have no "DJ" roots, to me a Dj sat there and played music. Producing is what i was MAINLY interested in. I thought DJing was what i had to do to get my music known. And you're doing what i've always dreamed of doing.

Anyways don't let some downbeat assholes knock you down like that. They just want a good story to piss you off and make everybody's day. Im proud of you for doing this for the music, because i know a lot of guys who are doing it for money or fame. But you do it for the music, and that's one of the main reasons i respect you.

Keep up the great work,i hope that someday ill be able to make it to one of your shows or meet you or somethin. Because i'd definitely like to see one of your shows live :).

Keep it up!

Without the producers there wouldnt be the music, there wouldnt be material for DJ's to hit play and play with their faders. Alot of the credit on the dance scene for producers gets lost and mainly djs gain the credibility on the scene, they make alot more money too. When really these days anybody can DJ. It takes years of patience and dedication to be a producer....give it a few weeks practising from scratch and you can be djing easily, an idiot could do it.

Anyway who reads the papers and who believes what they say, its always forged to cause attention. fuck em i say.
