So I for one have stopped worrying and am enjoying life now that Barack Obama is the leader of the free world.

If any of you reading are nervous about this scary noo fing called socialism, do not fear, my Dixie cousins. You may have less to spend on SUVs and too many pairs of kiddy-manufactured Chinese trainers, but give it a few months, and if you're in the middle of a cholesterol induced heart attack, the paramedic will now administer immediate help without asking you for proof of health insurance first. No longer will people get to survive mammoth surgery, only to come round, get handed the bill and die of shock from being bankrupted. This is a lovely thing, we've had it over here for a few years now - although it's a bit wonky at the moment - and once you get used to the strange comfort that comes from it you'll wonder why you never had it before.

I dunno about you, but it takes my breath away that it's barely fifty years since segregation ended in the US, and eighty-ish since women in both the US and UK have had the right to vote. Yes I was fond of Hills Clinton during the primaries as well - regardless, the Democratic ticket was always going to be a really important and positive opportunity for change, and it has to be said, redress. Big up the Yankee laydees who saw through the Palin pantomime; although, one has to worry for the wildlife of Alaska at this present time should the cowgirl need to let off some post-election steam.....

(Also, having just perused the results map, I may have to drive to Virginia instead of Idaho.)

The only downside of the recent US election is how clearly it highlights the paucity of leadership possibilities over here. We have a Premier we didn't even vote for. And an opposition leader who can play at being one of the people only because he's so facking rich he has the choice in the first place. (You know your country is well on the way to being facked when the shadow Chancellor gets called an oik by the shadow Prime Minister because he only went to St.Paul's and not Eton.)

Anyway, enough of that. Of course every blog in the sphere is writing about, and hopefully celebrating, this election result, so I'm not really waffling on about anything unusual here. But it is fantastic, not just because of what Obama represents in terms of race and social history, but because he also comes to power armed with some pretty bloody great policies and initiatives that if implemented will have positive repercussions globally, and Leadership. I cannot stress the latter enough. Sheeple settled for Dubya; People showed up in unprecedented numbers and chose Obama.

Feel sorry for ole' hamster cheeks McCain though, he was sweet like a grandad and not a bad bloke.

In other news, I am doing a London show on Thursday, 19th February 2009 at the Camden Roundhouse. Perhaps I shall use this as an opportunity to wear very, very high heels.

Lots of love to you all, and extra love to the Americans from a very grateful Limey.

I live only a few miles away from John McCain these days in Arizona, but I wanted Obama to win. I really didn't care for the Republican Party's presentation of Obama as possibly being a Muslim, as a) he's a Christian, and b) what's wrong with being a Muslim? It's nice that this country has something to be hopeful about at long last.

We have all heaved a sigh of relief Narina.

At least our leaders are educated though, I think that even the shadow chancellor, for all that he's an oik, knows which branch of the Muslim religion the Iranians belong to.

Words that Americans do not seem to understand properly:

Redistributionist, Socialist, Marxist, etceteras (no really, that one too)

I was at work when the word came in in AZ....i live not far from McCain either. He is now sulking at his place near Sedona AZ. What a beautiful place to be...anyhow, glad the election went the way it did but for one thing- this stupid state passed the married life law- one man one woman only. My rights have been stomped on in AZ. Ridiculous. Obama can change all of this if he wants to...so lets hope he CAN change this country.

I think it's the musicians that swung the vote - my MySpace page is full of status updates, blog notices, bulletins and much else on this subject. Even those like Thea Gilmore, who is on tour in the US at the moment, is in a state of ecstasy. Of course if I was a follower of Nashville country music I might just be getting wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I'm not sure about there being a God - didn't Bush and his neo-con mates claim he was on their side? Didn't Bush's poodle, Blair, catch God in a big way? I'm not inclined to blame or give the credit to any God for this. If I was him/her/it, I would bemoan the sort of people I was associated with.

We have posh Tories back now (but then Blair was hardly a pauper although his missus came from what was a fairly well broken up home thanks to her drunken, womanising dad - fortunately her mum was made of much sterner stuff).

The posh Tories have followed a longish list of fairly humble ones. Heath (you are too young to remember, but he was a disaster) was the son of a carpenter and a maid (he had religion too). Maggie was famously the daughter of a grocer (albeit she got hitched to somebody very rich) whilst John Major was borne of a failed garden gnome manufacturer and didn't even get to University. Those from modest backgrounds aren't always the nicest - or at least the ones that get into power. I could add Stalin and Hitler to that list.

So we have the old Etonians in power now - back to the grandee days of Alec Douglas Home, Harold McMillan and Anthony Eden. Something not seen in power for over forty years. Actually we have bike riding Tories now - famously Norman Tebbit's father (another of humble background) got on his bike in the recession. Now it's Cameron and Boris.

The really, really bad thing is not if they are from a posh background or not. It's that they are nearly all bloody lawyers.

Yes, Amen! I was a hard core Hillary supporter and wasted no time switching my alliance to President-Elect Obama. After 8 long years of darkness, there finally is light. The Repug-li-cons couldn't fool the American people any longer -simple as that. They only favor socialism when it pads their wallets, aids in abstenence only education, funds anti gay agendas or bails out their falling stock pottfolios. McCain is a decent man, no doubt, but wrong on each and every issue. The world should rejoice in this blessed moment.

I'm lucky to be living in the baby blue state of Washington. Love your comments, loved the excitement that spilled into the streets here and I really love the possibility that exists today like it hasn't around here in a long, long time. Come to Seattle, Nerina ! We'd love to have you !

Hey Narina,

Thanks for sharing your views on our country. I guess I'd be very scared and asking you if I could come live with you if McCain had won, however, I'm more of a traditional type of girl. I love our Constitution. It's unique and right in many many ways. I don't know if Obama is a follower of the Constitution, but we shall see. In the meantime, keep making great music love.

Cheers!
Michelle : )

love your music, but stick to that instead of being a political analyst. the reason there is a usa was to rid ourselves of socialism. never been to your country nor had a problem with it, but i'd like to keep with our constitutional system and you can keep your form of governing and for those that want your's, they can move in with you. god doesn't pick sides.
sincerly do love your music, bongojohn

The header, "there probably is a God" correspondes very nicely with philosophical thought, as most philosophers would agree that the probability of God existing is far greater than the probability of Him not existing. In other words, it is far more probable that there is design and intention behind creation than it all happened by chance. The chances of it happening by chance are off the scale....

Anyway, well done Barak!!

Yes please!

No argument with the suggestion of yellow ones but I always think silver is so *you*

Er, can we vote on it?

Just think - that Palin woman spends vastly more of other people's money than you on her image and *still* looks like a visual hybrid of Robocop and Tracey Emin ...

Speaking for myself though, I'd be quite happy for the British taxpayer to fund your amazing shoe collection ... though there might not be enough in the coffers for the moment.

Seriously, great to see you out and about gigging again - any chance of a return to Norwich?

Just know that us in NYC took to the streets crying, singing, clamoring after the election results!

Shame on the passing of Prop 8 in California, but hey, America is still a work in progress. At least things seem to be moving in the proper direction.

Much love, and thanks for the US shout out.

What about the 46% who went the other way though ? I'm terrified we'll be woken up by the sound of Zimmer frames pounding the concrete from across the Atlantic. There might be a civilian coup... instigated by people who smell slightly of wee and like wearing Chinos and lots of beige. At least they won't be able to get to us here though... not without applying for a passport anyway.

So...I don't want to munch on your cabbage, but...in this last week, the USA has put us to shame. We (in UK) claim to be a leading democracy...but the closest we ever got to electing an ethnic minority, is letting a fat bloke from Scotland take over for a bit. It's embarassing really.

You can wear heels if you want to, but I love it when you play....so just play, heels or not.

Bon Vie

Oh, you are so right - I think we all feel a bit relieved and excited about this truly historical election...

And I spent a lot of last weekend driving, listening to my fav songs from Fires. I can't seem to get enough of it. "Idaho" is such an amazing song, I just love everything about it - and the lyrics are extraordinary. That song could be about me.

If only I could get to London in Feb... have you ever considered playing in Sweden?

Oh, and I forgot! Heels!!! Yes! I always feel better wearing high heels when I perform. But then again, playing the piano, working the pedals, might be a bit harder than just standing up playing the guitar...

Hmm not sure about God, but hear hear to all that. Good concession speech from McCain though, I had a tear or two in my eye when Obama took to the stage, very emotional stuff. Do you think people go to the polls in such numbers over there because they also get to vote on assisted death and gay marriage?

I still prefer our cross on a bit of paper to touching a screen though.

Did you see grumpy old Gore Vidal tussling with David Dimbleby....I warmed to him, what was he on about?

Whatever happens in his presidency, this has to be a civilized step forward for the human race.

Keep chatting Narnia and look Shrewsbury up on the map, we have a lovely new theatre opening next year come and play it....go on! Probably see you in Buxton.

John

PS Did your long travelling south American fan enjoy her special show in St Ives?
