Current mood:  thirsty
Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes

Thirsty is a mood? I guess I am feeling thirsty, so yes, it's a mood.

What's a Coach... gal to do on a Tuesday afternoon?

Catching up on world events, perusing the classifieds/craigslist for rigs of the bass variety. It's time that I invest in a big, fat, smooth set-up of my own. I'm looking for the buddha of bass rigs.

Thoughts on Hartke, Mesa Boogie, Gallien-Kreuger, or what my little rapidly beating bird heart desires, an Ampeg from the late 1970's?

Once the question of maker has been answered how do I decide between 4-10", or 2-15", solid state or tubes? Don't give me that "personal preference" crap. I'll eat what I'm fed thank you very much.

In fact, I'm sick of making my own decisions about everything. I didn't ask to be an adult with interests, and plans, and hobbies, and dreams. Enough with the nagging! What kind of salad dressing do you want? Where are you going to go to grad school? Hey, why did you just light my mailbox on fire and dance naked in my yard at 1:30 in the afternoon? Why do I do anything mom? Answer me that? Oh, you don't read blogs? Very Conveeeeenient. Maybe it's because I'm in a thirsty mood. I'm going to have a fresca and stretch out my hammies. Dammit, nutrisweet! You taste like aluminum foil!

This just got a little weird didn't it?

Mmmm... Fresca.
First let me say that I'm not typically a "gear guy" but I thought I'd offer my advice. I'd say that tube is always better, and that 4x10's will give you more distinction and the 2-15'll give you give you more junk in the trunk window shaking bass. I have an Ampeg 4 x 10 cab with a solid state Ampeg SVT-350 Head. The head wasn't my first choice but my initial one was stolen and I needed a replacment immediately. This is big and loud.

My little baby is this little used 1972 Ampeg B12 tube amp with a flip-top head. This thing sounds amazing and is perfect for recording but it's a little quiet for most clubs. It's a little frustrating because it sounds so good. A good sound guy can put it in the monitors and let you hear, but a bad one will leave you drifting. All in all, it's a crap shoot, but since my band is going more accoustic it'll probably be loud enough.

If you want to check it out just let me know.

I would recommend the Eden 410XLT cab.  If you're looking for more flexibility, combine the 410XLT with a 210XLT... the 210 is great for small gigs, and the 410 will give you the ability to push a lot more air for larger venues.  I know a number of folks who claim these are the best 210 and 410 cabs out there... and they are made here in sunny Minnesota!  (Make sure they are the "XLT" versions -- other designations have different porting designs which can sacrifice deep lows.)

I personally would not go with a 2x15 for CSNT stuff.  You will in general get a little better articulation with 10s, and I think that would lend itself to the band's sound a little better.  I used to play through 15s, and got great lows, but I found that I preferred the clarity I got when I switched to 10s.  Just my opinion, of course.  Many cabs with 15s and a tweeter can still get great clarity.

Head:  Of course, a vintage Ampeg tube head can't be beat.  Although I know a guy who swears by a Tech21 rackmount pre running through a solid state 1200 watt power amp.  (Something like that is a super-easy way to run direct to the board and for recording, but you lose some of your street cred.)  :)

I assume you've been to http://www.bgra.net/ ?

One of the prominent high-end bass dealers out there is http://www.planetbass.com/, also conveniently located in our backyard (MN).  Of course, you can get any high-end amp from them that you want... if it is made by Aguilar.  :)  Great selection of basses, though.  Speaking of Aguilar, people seem to *really* like their heads, but I have not heard them, so I can't say.  Maybe the best of both worlds?  Warm tube sound plus modern accoutrements?  Go down to American Guitar Boutique in St. Paul and try them out -- a great place to try out nice gear.

Ahh, gear acquisition syndrome -- my plague, my tormenter!

I'm selling my ampeg B25B from the mid 70's.  It's totally sweet. 2x15, all tube. only $750, but we live in Chicago.

For an interesting change of pace, check out www.earcandycabs.com- cool custom built cabs in Indiana. I think they load the Bass Bomb 2 X 12 with Eminence speakers.. ala SVT 8 X10. I just ordered one after trying a friends. This company rocks too! Not only did they talk to me about what I wanted but asked alot of questions about what kind of amp and guitar I usually use etc.

worth checking out. Good luck on your rig hunt and looking forward to playing with you @ the Entry.

I know this is not the coolest answer to give, but check out the Line 6 Bass Pod xt Floor (or something like that). I use it running into a nice clean powered monitor and have my choice of lots and lots of great bass tones. Not as much street cred as an SVT running through an 8x10 cab but also not as many hernias... or, check out the Matchless copy of the old Ampeg flip-top. It's heavy as hell but sounds dreamy.

haha...

If you can get your hands on the fender bassman from the 60s it sounds amazing. http://cgi.ebay.com/1964-Fender-Bassman-Amp-Vintage-Original-MINTY-6G6-B_W0QQitemZ270060615207QQihZ017QQcategoryZ118983QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemIf you decide to go with a fender though, it's best to use a fender bass also. I would'nt use anything but a fender or a rickenbacher(sp) anyway, but i dont want to pay a fortune and a half for an instrument if im going to actually play it on the road and not put it in a glass case (speaking on the rickenbacher)

Tube amps will definantly put a dent in your pocket, but its worth the extra cash to get somthing that sounds good, and then you arent regreting buying somthing later on and blah blah blah....
