"This is simply one of the greatest clubs in the country. With its rich tradition and great reputation for always having good music, the Continental Club seems to be a hot spot for anyone who really likes music. And if you go, you just may find yourself sitting next to Julia Roberts or Johnny Depp. You never know at the CC. And that's why bigger acts such as Rev. Horton Heat or Spoon always make a stop here on tour. As far as musicians are concerned, there's no better place to play...or go." ~CitySearch.com

Dianne's Dish

Hello everyone! This hasn't been a very good day. We lost Chris Gaffney to liver cancer today. I've written a pieced-together obituary for now, but a more complete one will be available soon.

Fortunately, lots of folks have sent a bazillion photos in from recent shows, so I will post them for you to see. Check out our Photo Page for some shots at the Club. And we also have James McMurtry's Just Us Kids release party Just Us Kids Photo Page.

The Continental Service Club: Candye Kane cancer Fund

Our dear friend Candye Kane who is about to undergo surgery tomorrow, April 18, and follow-up treatment for pancreatic cancer. Candye may still be a well-kept mainstream secret but in most underground circles, her diva status is legendary. She has been making music professionally for over two decades and toured worldwide since 1992, performing for amazingly diverse audiences. She played at the French Embassy in Rome for the President of Italy, headlined the Rhythm Riot, a rockabilly and R&B festival in the UK, and belted it out alongside Ray Charles at the Cognac Blues Festival. She slayed em' at the Cannes Film Festival, kept them enthralled at New York Gay Pride and most recently, helped organize a thirteen city tour of the Netherlands for special needs kids. Candye's live show is the stuff of legend. She honors the bold blues women of the past with both feet firmly planted in the present. She belts - growls - shouts - croons and moans from a lifetime of suffering and overcoming obstacles.

Candye says:

I am nervous but I continue to say my positive affirmations and visualize myself in my healthy, cancer free body when this is over. I am feeling great and stronger than ever. I have discovered some amazing new vegan foods to eat like raw vegan ice cream from coconut milk, vegannaise, Kamut yeast free bread and so many other delicious vegan foods that I don't miss meat, sugar or dairy at all! I continue to juice daily, lose weight and ride my bike about four miles daily. I am a regular at my local health food store, Cream of the Crop, and everyone there is wishing me well when I go in for my wheatgrass shots each day. I am in great shape right now, my skin is soft, my eyes are clear and bright and I know I will survive this surgery and recuperate quickly.

It was an amazing week when many of my musician friends, Sue Palmer, Paul Loranger, Sharon Shufelt, Jonny Viau, April West, Pete Harris, Melissa Hague and Steve Wilcox recorded with me at PH studios in Escondido. We recorded some standards I have always wanted to record; "At Last," "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good," "He's Funny that Way," and Joe Liggins' "I Gotta Right To Cry" (which was one of the songs I used to strip to as a young dancer in the early 80's). We will go back in on April 16th to record a few more tunes before I enter the hospital. I felt like it was important to do this, because if something did go wrong in surgery, (which it won't!!!) at least I have recorded some of my all time favorite songs. I know everything will be fine but it felt so special and heartwarming to have my musician friends rally around me and donate their talents and studio time for free. I am one lucky girl.

I continue to be humbled and awed by so many beautiful gestures of friendship and love from you. I have received so many cards (many with checks!) letters, emails and phone calls. Pay pal gifts continue to stream in. I am overwhelmed with so much to do and have over 400 emails waiting for an answer. Thank you for your patience with me right now, and thank you so much for your huge hearts and your tender words of love. The benefits scheduled will help me pay for my living expenses while I am disabled. There are so many bills to pay and now that I cancelled my European tour, I am in debt for the airline ticket money the Finnish promoter sent me. I owe about $8000 in hospital bills that Medi-cal will not pay, plus another 5k to the Finnish promoters. Not to mention the lost wages of the band members who all lost work when I cancelled. The money raised at these benefits will go a long way towards helping me recuperate in peace without worrying about how we will survive.

I really feel like on some level, cancer has been a blessing. (I know, ask me again when I am groaning in pain in a hospital bed!) But for the first time in my life, I have really started to think about what I eat and when I eat it. I have always been proud to be a big, voluptuous gal, and have always been active and healthy in my 200 lb plus frame, but now I am really conscious of what I am eating, and what it is made of, and where it comes from. I believe I may have chosen this challenge on some cosmic level, so I could learn from this experience and improve and I know I have been given an opportunity to grow spiritually from this fight. Maybe I will start a workshop for cancer patients to learn how to write songs and journals to help them cope with their illnesses. Music is such a powerful healer and maybe that's why this has happened to me. I will use the cancer experience as a way to make my memoir even more powerful and meaningful. I will really be able to lay claim to the Toughest Girl Alive title now! I know my optimistic nature is coming in handy during this challenge. (Notice I refuse to say I'm sick!? I am just health challenged right now!) And it has been so helpful to know that I am not alone and that I have so many beautiful, caring people in my corner. So many of my friends around the globe are organizing benefits for me. Thank you all so much for your continued love and support. I feel your healing thoughts and energy and I hope you will keep me close to your hearts on April 18th.

Candye Kane is the "Toughest Girl Alive," but even tough girls need help sometimes... Please keep those healing thoughts a coming….and any donations you can muster at www.paypal.com user name, candyekanetour@aol.com.

Wednesday HH @ 6:30. No cover - Shotgun Party have made a hit of their Wednesday Happy Hours! They put on a truly American music show. They swing early jazz right on into dance hall country… with rapturous results. The majority of songs are original, with melodies and lyrics that share stories: urban, bucolic, lively and lonesome. From all three coasts (New England, California, and Texas) this trio scours through and plays with all the rhythms, modes and melodies this continent has to offer, with a twinge of bizarreness that accommodates any wide-open journey.

Best of the Rest

Thursday April 17 @ 10:00, 11:15, 12:30. $7 - "Product of Texas • Genuine Freestyle Rocking," Jerm Pollet & The Catfish Hunters combine blues, classic rock & crunk. "From the fever swamps of Austin, Texas comes the saddest band in the land!" Yup, that certainly sounds like Jerm Pollet's brand of comedy & music. Possessed by Paul James is "one-man band Konrad Wert who grew up in a Mennonite family, raised by a preacher father and a piano player mother, which accounts for both the baptized-in-fire-soul and the musical versatility heard in his gritty old-world music" ~The Onion. In June of 2006, a 25-year-old Mario Matteoli released Hard Luck Hittin', his debut solo album. The album was well received by fans and critics alike. Some likened the album to the "acoustic solitude of Neil Young or the depressed world spun by Townes Van Zandt," while others simply described it as "fantastic."

Friday April 18 @ 10:00, 12:00. $10 - Nic Armstrong has an "unnerving ability to twist his classic influences into contemporary finely crafted pop moments. Recalling the early to mid sixties and the halcyon days of British pop music before trousers flared and acid was dropped, there's a rare innocence and beauty often knocked out of music by many of his contemporaries keen to achieve the authentic sixties hit. Armstrong reinstates the song as something your milkman can whistle. There's no posturing, little fuss just good old tunes, something often forgotten about in the rush for the right haircut." ~One Little Indian Records. Somewhere in Texas, a haunting voice reverberates off saloon walls. A voice rich with the echoes of timeless country music. The singer and the songwriter is James Hand and he has quite a story to tell. Listen once, and the truth will set you free! "Folks, like I said before and it's STILL true, James Hand is the real deal!" ~Willie Nelson

Saturday April 19 @ 10:00, 12:00. $10 - LZ Love "delivers a powerful blend of funk, soul, gospel, R&B and rock that echo more of '70s Motown than the live music capitol. This is the real deal. It contains every bit of the grit that put this girl on the same stage or studio as James Brown, Luther Vandross, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Clarence Clemons, The Neville Brothers, Joan Armatrding, Bonnie Raitt, P-Funk, Sister Sledge, Carolyn Wonderland, Michael Franti, Shelly King and Papa Mali." ~Marie Mesa, Austin Daze. Yes, LZ is about as real as they come. You've GOT to hear her if you haven't yet. Big Sam's Funky Nation was a huge hit the very first time they were here. Presiding over his Funky Nation is Big Sam, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still. Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style. A talented group of jazz-trained musicians makes up the Funky Nation, bringing with them the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of big band funk. Theirs, and Big Sam's, exuberant dancing and playing, afford them a rare opportunity to let loose. Big Sam's Funky Nation has undeniable personality, as well as masterful chops.

Thursday April 24 @ 10:00, 12. $7 - Deke Dickerson is King of the Whole Wide World and tonight Deke Dickerson & The Ecco-Fonics will prove it to you. In the Americana genre Deke is regarded as a true musicologist, mixing together styles as disparate as old-time country, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, doo-wop, and surf. In rockabilly, he is acknowledged as one of the very top acts in the world and regularly headlines festivals from Las Vegas to Finland. Deke's music has been included in many movie and television soundtracks, most recently in the Oscar-winning movie Sideways and the TV show Monster Garage. His trademark is a custom double-neck Mosrite guitar. Chili Cold Blood has released their new record entitled Lips...their 5th to date...their heaviest and funkiest recording yet, making more apparent their rock influences, most notably, the heavy influence of Black Sabbath, ...also revealing a nasty new funk...blunt lyrics, funky rhythms, and evil riffs...and NO bass. No bones about it folks, this rocks.

Friday April 25 @ 10:00, 12:00. $10 - Darling New Neighbors are an eclectic indie pop band, with multiple-instrument swapping and an energetic stage show. They describe it as "accordion disco"—to which critics ascribe a Pixies-flavored mix of rock and folk, informed by Daniel Johnston. DNN is currently recording their second album, slated for a 2008 release by I Eat Records. In the words of national press, Darling New Neighbors are: "warm and welcoming" (Amplifier Magazine) and "a laidback but constantly surprising sort of party" (The Big Takeover). The Horsies are a band who had their heyday in the early to late 90s, but still get together every few years to play a show or two, and maybe write a new song. this could go on forever, or at least until they no longer have control of their bodily functions. the band formed in the winter of 1991/92, when, to make a long story short, 3 members of Joan of Arkansas joined forces with two members of Happy Family, along with one Muleskinner, to form a band with the intention of making people dance. Mission accomplished. Pong's live shows have "a psychedelic bottom-wiggling goodness" according to Greg Beets, Austin Chronicle, and he says guitarists Gary and Jason along with keyboard wizard Shane "wrap the local quintet's slow-driving groove up in a veil of Brian Eno-style retro-futurism that lends the proceedings the air of a 1975 Berlin bomb-shelter orgy with your hosts Iggy Pop and David Bowie. It's a fine example of post-apocalyptic science fiction rock you can dance to."

Saturday April 26 @ 9:00, 10:00, 12:00. $10 - Jill Hennessy may be best known in most circles for her acting in Law & Order (Claire Kincaid) and as the star of Crossing Jordan (Jordan Cavanaugh), but we've come to know her best as a folk singer, songwriter & guitarist. Hennessy used to busk (play the guitar and sing for money) in the New York City subway, and sometimes makes appearances at music events as a barefoot guest guitarist. The very versatile Cornell Hurd Band gets you shuffling to swing country and western sounds that never fail. Numbering some dozen full-time members, it's "Tex-cellence" from a man and his band who will never stop trying to be better than the last time you saw or heard them. Challenged by their fans to create a sound that mirrors the shuffle of happy boots on a hardwood floor, The Derailers have fed the hungry dancehall crowds with their classic country beats and a 60s pop sensibility. In terms of sound, the Derailers have gotten smoother with age. As Hofeldt puts it, "I think we have retained the path we are going for. But we have certainly grown as players and allowed other influences to come in." Their music celebrates the legacies of Buck Owens, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich and the Beatles, while still being on the edge of today's country music. Hofeldt describes his view of country music as, "finding out what love really is, versus what you thought it was when you were a kid." For all the fans of the Derailers, love is all you need.

Notable Obituaries - April 2008

Chris Gaffney - b. October 3, 1950 * d. April 17, 2008

Chris Gaffney, a beloved husband, revered entertainer, precious father, dear uncle, trusted friend, cherished brother has succumbed to liver cancer

Chris Gaffney passed away this morning, April 17, 2008 in the Orange County hospital in California with his wife Julie at his side. He suffered a fall at home last night and died in his sleep after being admitted to the hospital. Further details are unavailable at this time. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

"Chris Gaffney grew up in Arizona, where he learned to play the accordion as a young child. The instrument would later influence the performer's mix of norteño with country and rock & roll. Gaffney eventually mastered guitar as well and spent his teen years gigging in cover and house bands. In 1977, he formed a partnership with keyboardist Wyman Reese, who also produced Gaffney's initial solo efforts. Road to Indio appeared in 1986; it featured 1950s rock, soul, and dusty Bakersfield honky tonk. Chris Gaffney & the Cold Hard Facts followed in 1990, and delved into Gaffney's Hispanic heritage. His third solo effort, Mi Vida Loca, was issued in 1992. Loser's Paradise appeared in 2003. The album was produced by blue-collar stalwart Dave Alvin and featured contributions from Lucinda Williams and Jim Lauderdale." ~ Johnny Loftus, AMG. Gaffney also recorded and toured extensively as a member of Dave Alvin & the Guilty Men. Gaffney & Alvin formed a bond of brotherhood that has been a cornerstone in each of their lives.

Gaff's most current project, The Hacienda Brothers is a collaboration between singer and songwriter Gaffney and Dave Gonzalez, best known as the guitarist, singer, and songwriter with the veteran blues-rockabilly combo the Paladins. "Longtime friends Gaffney and Gonzalez first performed together when they played an informal set for a mutual friend's birthday party in 2002; Gonzalez was impressed with the results, and as he was looking for an outlet for the country-style songs he was unable to perform with the Paladins, he proposed a more formal collaboration. Teaming up with David Berzansky on pedal steel, Hank Maninger on bass, and Dale Daniel on drums, the duo adopted the name the Hacienda Brothers, and set up a base of operations in Tucson, AZ. Gonzalez, who has a passionate interest in vintage cars, struck up a friendship with fellow gearhead Dan Penn, the legendary producer and songwriter who was a key figure in the Muscle Shoals sound, and he persuaded Penn to produce the debut Hacienda Brothers album, the eponymous Hacienda Brothers. Penn also contributed two songs to the sessions, which appeared on the group's self-titled 2005 release. What's Wrong with Right was released the following year." ~Mark Deming, AMG. A live CD, Music For Ranch & Town, was released unofficially in August of 2007. Their sound, dubbed "Western Soul," culminated in the 2007 nomination for the Americana Music Association Duo/Group of the Year. In January of 2008 The Hacienda Brothers recorded their 4th CD, Arizona Motel, that will be released nationally on June 24th.
Plans are in the works for the band to tour in support of the CD in tribute to Chris Gaffney.

Chris Gaffney lived his life as a dedicated musician with little fanfare or ego. The industry recognition that had so long eluded him finally came with sincere praise & genuine respect for the quality of his work in The Hacienda Brothers. His fans worldwide have overwhelmingly shown their loved & appreciation - the www.helpgaff.com website has raised tens of thousands of dollars before a single benefit show has even been played. Gaff was universally loved for his quick smile, even temperament, keen observations and dry wit. He will be missed as much for those qualities as for his incomparable talent as a singer, songwriter and musician. And I will surely miss hearing the girls scream, "Gaffney! Gaffney! Gaffney!"

If you would like to send in your memories of Gaff, we'd love to see them and print as many as we can. And we have the beginning of a Chris Gaffney photo page if you have photos you'd like to share

Gaff's favorite month of the year? "April, because it always brings hope."
