eternal thanks...It was an honor & a privilege to play music for you on the radio or Internet...

To those of you that do not know, I was unceremoniously dumped from WCLM. They wanted me to continue my usual schedule (Monday-Friday, 1-4PM) for the next 2 weeks and then would have relegated me to piece meal time slots after that. Instead of accepting this, I decided, in the words of Keith Richards, to walk before they make me run. I'm not the type of guy that allows himself to be fisted.

Here's the skinny on the fisting I would not allow to happen:

They are bringing in Kirby Carmichael who was (emphasis on was) a popular radio personality here in Richmond in the 80's. I was looking forward to working with him as I thought we could really do something special with a mixed race line-up of shows that would be truly unique on the still segregated commercial radio dials. After talking about the advertising possibilities with management I was told that Kirby wants my time slot. To make matters worse, they intend on paying him a handsome wage which was something that was never offered to me despite years of loyal service. Everything that happened on my show started and ended with me. Sales, engineering, promotion; all me. I built the station's web site without any monetary compensation. No one lifted finger one to help me. Considering the amount of press, accolades and exposure my years of steady diligence my show brought to the station, it is a slap to the face to be considered with such casual disregard. This is not unusual in the radio business as it is a cut throat business to begin with. But given the amount of exposure my show garnered the station that they would have never otherwise would have received, it is a particularly bitter pill to swallow. In fact, Carmichael would have never even considered moving to the station if it were not for the exposure my 15 hours a week of programming that put the station on people's radar to begin with.

They are trying to keep me on the station with some piece meal time slots though I am reticent to work with them in any capacity. All they want is me to continue bringing them money that they would otherwise never be able to secure. Coupled with the fact that I feel criminally under appreciated, it will be a cold day in hell before I would do anything for them.

If you feel so inclined, call the station and voice your displeasure if you disappointed about not be able to listen to the Bopst Show anymore. Here are the numbers:

Studio line: (804) 231-7685
Office: (804) 231-2186 or (804) 231-0123

I would greatly appreciate it if you would call these numbers with alarming frequency. Feel ever so free to spread these numbers around to all of your friends as well. As of yesterday, I got word that nobody is answering the phone (including the request line!) at the station because they have been overwhelmed with angry calls demanding that I be put back on the air. Apparently, a thirty minute answering machine tape was filled with people voicing their displeasure. If you, dear reader, could continue to overwhelm the station with calls on my behalf, I would be forever in your debt. I thank you in advance and if you get an actual human on the line, I would be greatly interested in the response you receive. Let me know what happens when (and if) you can call...

In the end though, I will not go back to the station under any circumstances. Once someone tries to fuck me in the ass, they are dead to me. After all I did for the station and to be treated with such callous contempt, it is, as you might well imagine, a bitter pill to swallow. I can barely control my seething hate.

I also am filled with a profound sadness. As I said before, I considered it an honor and a privilege to play music for those of you that found the time to listen to my radio show over the years. Given the current state of radio, I doubt I will be able to move my show to another station so chances are The Bopst Show will never be heard again on the local airwaves. I have to eternally thank the locally owned and operated businesses that supported my show over the last 6 years even though they didn't have to and I hope that you will too. They are the good ones.

Well, I can not tell you how much I have enjoyed and appreciated your support over the years and how sad I am not to be your musical penicillin in a world trying to give you audio syphilis.

To each and every one of you, I wish you all every good thing,

BOPST

This decision is a CROCK OF SHIT. For years, Chris Bopst has graced this city with his encyclopedic knowledge and unsurpassed good taste in music. Creative, witty, beloved by all who know him or want to know him, he's done more for this town musically that many could ever dream to. This is the equivalent of Comedy Central cancelling the Daily Show. Who in their right minds could possibly think this is a good idea? I sincerely hope this decision is reversed or another station picks him up and puts him on in direct competition to Kirby Carmichael. I for one will work to see this happen. I call bullshit. I call shenanigans. Most of all, I call the station and raise some hell. Please do the same!

KIRBYCARMICHAEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????
What the F&*K?
I just got around to reading this and as soon as I wrapped my mind around what you were saying and say that name my jaw just dropped and it's still on the ground. You know I'm old school and I know who that is. How can they replace you with him? I live in California and I've turned my friends out here on to your show. Your show and sometimes KPIG are THE ONLY shows I listen to on the radio anymore. I listen to you to get my Richmond fix and to get ideas of what to download next. You got screwed with no Vasiline. Let them kiss your almost Black Ass. Remember when a door is closed a window is opened. This is your time to do bigger and better things. If you have tapes of your show and I'm sure you do, send them to Satalitte Radio stations. Start your own internet radio show. Go for it my friend. I have all the faith I can hold in my heart for you.
Don't stop spinning.
I LOVE YOU,
Jewel

Me Again,
Just did a quick search of Kirby online and saw that the same thing happened to him in 2004.
Also just became a member of MYSPACE.

Dear Chris,
I wish to join the other commentors here in shock, sadness, and hope for the future of your endeavors to innoculate the willing from the grey expanse of same-ness and pigeon-holes. Here's hoping that once you work through this appalling shafting, you go on to bigger and better things. Here's to onward and upward.
I want to thank you for the many great hours of brilliance, sublime and ridiculous. And for things I heard from you first; Art Brut, Antony & the Johnsons, Sharon Jones,Papa Susso,Amy Winehouse. Interspersed with the best and deepest punk, r&b, jazz, dub, cartoon music, funk, blues, hip-hop, bluegrass, and un-classifiable.Or just the silliest, as the mood strikes. FREEDOM!
This town,(country, world, universe,) is full of shysters. Fuck'em.
I hoist a glass of cheap Virginia wine in the general direction of the fan. God bless you Chris Bopst. Long may you wave.
Sincerely,
Jimmy Catlett

i had no idea Kirby Carmichael was even still alive! Interesting that if you do a little Google work you find out that the same BS was done to him! Having worked at a Christian radio station (the lowest of the low in the radio world!), I can attest that the radio business (in addition to being pretty harsh & cruel) is not exactly the best paying profession either! Well, there's always the podcast model to go with in addition to the satellite radio angle as well.

wow...so they piss all over you, and they STILL want the money you brought in! Are they REALLY that stupid?

Dude. You have such a big mind if you know what I mean... To put it into such a small minded station seems a waste. Time to move on man! You are definitely valued more elsewhere!!! Keep going man, keep going!!!

Hey Chris,

I wondered why I couldn't get your show this week. Listen, I bought a radio for my studio just to hear your show. Who even has a radio anymore?

I called the station and they said they've received 1000's of calls about you and will put you back on the air at your regular time slot....??? They told me to call you and tell you to call them. Is it true or did they just want me to go away?

You can't go off the air forever. That's absurd. My ears will start bleeding.

No, Chris! I can't believe this! I'll surely call and get others to call.
There's just got to be a home for you to continue your ultra-fabulous show.
So very sorry - this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
I'll be sending good vibes.
How about a new station out of your home?!

Take care -

Dr. Z: It was brought to my attention, there is a concern expressed by you, I may be brought on board to some radio program with Kirby Carmichael, and yes...I do say this in jest.

I am not familiar with this show everyone is lamenting over, as I no longer listen to any kind of FM radio, especially in this little town. My iPod and XM work for me. No need to worry about anyone bringing me anywhere, especially in Richmond radio as I have absolutely no interest in it. So, hopefully this will put your fears at ease. How kind of you to remember my name, as there was a time when this little town actually knew how to rock!

As for the gentleman who was recently fired, it happens, move on! Hey... several of us were fired while on air at XL-102 in the middle of the annual radiothon raising money for the leukemia society when Clear Channel took over XL. They pulled right off the air and certainly didn't pat us on the back and say job well done. It's the nature of the beast with corporate owned radio.

Have to agree with you on your statement, "The powers that be in this town wouldn't know true culture and good music if it bitchslapped them all the way back to the Civil War era..."
You should have tried working at the Planet when I was there. Being that I have no idea who you are, maybe you do or did. Whatever, your statement is spot on.

I'm having a far better time in real estate... making better money, not having to deal with ego maniac general managers or whatever. Should have made that move a long, long time ago before the Planet when straight into the loo. So again, rest easy... I have no interest in these air-waves, not unless the true good programing and management guys come back and take the reigns once again. They too, are on to better things.

Lark,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post concerning my radio show. I greatly appreciate it.

Radio is a pale shadow of it's former great, culturally diverse self. The goal of my show was to provide an outlet for the vast majority of music that is otherwise not heard on the commercial radio dials. It was a labor of love that is sadly missing on music radio.

WCLM is not Clear Channel. It is a small station that requires the DJ's to hustle the advertising to justify their broadcasting existence. Given the freedom to play whatever I saw fit, I considered it a fair deal though incredibly time consuming. Not only did I have to put together & produce my show, I had to pound the pavement to keep the program on the air. I doubt any radio personality at Clear Channel or Cox has to do that.

Over the almost 6 years I was on the air, I did everything in my power to put WCLM on the local listening option map. My show was written up in the local and national press, I made T-Shirts for station, made hundreds of posters, constructed the station's web site and worked the web to not only advertise my show, but to advertise the whole station. All of this came out of my own pocket. I was the only one on the station that worked tirelessly to expose the station.

I know the radio business is cut throat, but WCLM is not a broadcasting giant. I never received a paycheck and worked on a percentage on the advertising dollars that I myself secured. I brought in thousands of dollars over the years that the station would not have been able to get if it were not from my diligent efforts.

The funny thing about all this is that I was the one that suggested getting Kirby in the first place. I saw it as the first time that WCLM could be a real station with a large & diverse listening audience. I was talking with management about the unique advertising possibilities such a line up of Chip, myself & Kirby could create. I was genuinely excited.

And then Kirby decided he wanted my shift. Worst of all, they were going to pay him which was something that wasn't even considered when it came to me, the guy who built the station's web site, printed t-shirts out of his own pocket and whose show was the most listened to and written about program on the station. They offered me patchwork slots at night knowing full well that I had another job and a desire to be with my wife and to watch our child grow up. I was treated with such a casual disregard, I realized that my years of selfless service didn't amount to a hill of beans. It was and is still a bitter pill to swallow from people I thought were my friends.

That is radio in the big leagues, but this is different. If I was simply a radio personality getting paid a wage, I would more than understand. In this situation though, I was the station to a great number of people and proved myself to be an asset. I single-handedly exposed the station to an audience that would have never have tuned in if it were not for me. I'm not bragging here; it is simply the truth.

I understand your horror concerning the radio. That is why I started my show in the first place; to make radio worth listening to and judging by the outpouring of dismay that my show is no longer on the station, I succeeded. Isn't that what A DJ is supposed to do? To get people listening? Again, I did my job with flying colors.

To be honest, I hope WCLM does well. I love Preston as he is one of the good ones who works tirelessly to keep the station on the air. Kirby is his idol and he and Chip together provide content that would be otherwise unheard on the local airwaves. I just think it is criminally shortsighted to not accommodate the one DJ who was getting people to listen and was bringing the station much needed exposure.

I sent the radio station an e-mail expressing my sadness that your show will no longer be on the air, and told them what a huge loss it is for the city of Richmond. I loved your show Chris and listened every day while driving my UPS truck around town. It's like losing a friend. You are a very talented DJ and I hope that one day you will return to the airwaves.
