Minneapolis MN, Sep 12th-Hello friends. I'm on my hotel room. Holiday Inn (Metro Dome) if you care to know the details. i went to a great breakfast place this morning called Hells Kitchen. Go if you're ever here and hungry in AM. Now i'm sitting on my bed listening to the new Shawn Colvin record......only on the second song but so far so good. I've also been listening to the new Roots and Pete Yorn CDs. I really like parts of each.
So Jon Foreman and I did 4 or 5 days of recording during my last little break from nickel creek touring. He and i have been writing songs and wanting to do a musical project for a while now but it's hard to find common time when Nickel Creek and Switchfoot are both off the road and at home. Anyway, its so much fun. No expectations or preconceptions..... just friends having fun making music. Who knows if the powers that be will even allow us to put it out but, whatever, that doesn't matter at this point. We're just recording at our houses, making use of what instruments and tools we have and its been a blast. And it sounds great, i'm really proud of what we have so far. Its fun to just rush into new musical territory. 3 songs that are mostly there. And 2 more that are on the way. We even have a website. i'm not sure if its up yet but it should be soon. It's therealseanjon.com. The first day we got together to start laying stuff down, we decided to make a manifesto for our record. With 5 rules/limitations that would kind of act as a basic frame to get us started. there's just too many options these days that can get in the way of the creative process. So here's what we came up with.

the real seanjon recording manifesto:

1) no tuning (of vocal tracks etc)
2) no amp simulators (software effects, none near as fun and cool as the real thing)
3)no schlepping (of gear back and forth...)
4) no pussyfooting (around each others musical feelings)
5) no crap (to cover any un-thought-of rules)

More on all this soon.

We had a few really fun Watkins Family Hour shows at Largo during last break. Willie Watson from Old Crow Medicine Show and Jon Brion, Tom Bruseau, Greg Leitz and Benmont Tench were guests. Benmont and Greg have become regulars which sara and i are extremely happy about. By the way, we're going to be doing a lot more shows there this fall winter there and there's going to be some really cool ones, so if you live anywhere within reasonable driving distance from LA you really should try to come. In fact we're doing 5 thursdays in a row starting on Oct 19th. after that i'll be the regular one or 2 a month. Alright well i need to get out of my room here and get in a cab to the airport. Flying to Dallas this evening. I hope this blog finds you all happy warm and well. MOre very soon! -s

Glad to hear from you as always Sean. It is always cool to get a little insight into the behind the scenes of the music writing process. I too look foreward to any to any collaboration between the two of you. One of these days I will make it to a WFH Largo show. Thanks again.

ps Pleez trust me on this and check out Andrew Gorny. He is on my top eight. He Just finished his first project. I ran into him on the street in Portland and he let me hear his rendition of 'Claire de Lune' on the guitar. He said no one had ever done a decent version so he did it...

oohhhh I'm excited to hear what you and Jon come up with!

I wish that I lived in California so I could go to one of these seemingly delightful Watkins Family Hour shows...alas, Michigan is a heck of a haul from California, and being a broke college kid makes it difficult to just jet out there to see a show.

Maybe one day, though!

Hope you're doing well!
-Megan

P.S.: I can finally understand the meaning behind "Not So Bad/Blinders On"...definitely hits home right now. Thanks for writing songs like that...

I find it disappointing that the criterion in your manifesto will leave you among the minority in regard to present-day record-making (and perhaps even in thought process and audience consideration). And it's certainly no coincidnce that these standards are all prefaced with "no." ...because the vast majority - by no exaggeration - is really screwing it up.

Start a revolution, Sean. Or at least peacefully continue with what you are doing, thereby passively protesting the mass degredation of musical talent.

You are the fish swimming upstream, and I greatly admire you for it.

Dear Mr. Watkins,

I can't wait to hear some of your new stuff! I want you to know that your music soothes me. I was having a very rough morning, dealing with three-year-old's temper tantrums and such. I poored myself some coffee, put in "Let It Fall" and I feel better already. Keep it coming!

I say this honestly - besides the fact that I love your music - it would be awesome to see the creative process as it unfolds. Glad to hear you like Pete Yorn, he is a very talented artist that gets very little attention, on his new album I like the Vampires song, it very dark and that of course is always hot. I so need to go to Cali. those family hours sound like such good times and me living in the wrong state is definatly making me miss out. I can't wait to hear your music - your killer when it comes to it. Much Luvs as always and have a safe and blessed tour.

Anneke ;)

aww this blog did find me all happy and warm and well at the end. i am glad that you and jon can have time to just hang out and make music together. if i were any sort of musical, it would be what i would do with my free time... as it is, it is hard for two actor friends to sit around and casually act together. its even harder for two stage manager friends to casually stage manage together. so my two artistic passions are limited in their casual use. i am jealous of you.
its good to see that you are as excited about your upcoming break as Sara is... i bet the WFH shows will be amazing... i am in no reasonabledriving distance from LA, so i will never no. poo.
be well sean, and be happy and warm yourself! : ) -Rhiannon
