Current mood:  rejuvenated
Category: Music

So, our debut album 'This Is My Ship' was released in the UK/Europe on Xtra Mile Recordings back on the 12th February 2007, and in North America/Japan on Deep Elm just recently in October.

The CD is still available from all of the usual suspsects but for UK folks, may I recommend
www.banquetrecords.com/dartz and for US types, head over to www.deepelm.com/dartz - and of course, it's available from iTunes and all that malarkey.

If you require further incentive before buying, then here's a few choice review quotes:

"The beyond-brilliant 'Once, twice, again!' twitches like the fleshy stump of a recently decapitated cadaver, while recent single 'St Petersburg' manages to sound like scene godfathers the Minutemen playing Chic songs. Nerdy, snappy and smart; this is jerk-punk played by real live jerks... fucking brilliant. 8/10" NME

"An album of original, exciting and intricate pop. 'Laser Eyes' and crowd favourite 'Once, twice, again!' epitomise Dartz!'s humorous-yet-earnest take on the world but all 12 will make you dance, think, and grin. 8/10" Rock Sound

"Dartz! are an excellent band, without doubt; a trio who show more musical dexterity than numerous kak artpop bands twice their size. Sections of hardcore rocking are sewn back to back with melodic jangling, and even the intricate folk-prog and awkward time signatures currently touted by their friends Hot Club De Paris. This Is My Ship is a great debut to set Dartz! on their way." Artrocker

"It's entirely too easy to compare Dartz! to another troupe of northern england post-punks, The Futureheads. But both specialize in short frantic tunes fit for manic dancing: each band also take musical cues from Fugazi's spiky throttling and early XTC's whirlwind tempos. But on the excellent This Is My Ship, Dartz! largely eschew mod-pop harmonies for intricate math rock textures, crisp rhythms and melodic guitar spazzes. (Think Braid and Q and Not U spruced up for high tea). "A Simple Hypothetical" features criss crossed vocal lines - paging Tell All Your Friends era Taking Back Sunday - while the handclap-driven new wave bounce of "Network! Network! Network!" is insiduously catchy. This exuberence helps This Is My Ship stand out from the masses... 4/5" Alternative Press

"Three young guys from Teesside have just made a fantastic debut album in the form of 'This Is My Ship'. As soon as the dance drum beat and catchy hook of 'Network! Network! Network!' kick in, it's obvious that this band is quirky, fun, angular and pretty damn special. One hell of an impressive debut that could see them following in the footsteps of their friend Sam Get Cape to mainstream success. 4/5" Big Cheese

"Remember the first time you heard Bloc Party? If you concentrate, you can feel that vitality, that sense of urgency behind the music, and an underlying something that feels undeniably British. Dartz! are all of these things, and yet somehow a million miles away. This band is destined for great things, and that's a fact. 4/5" Play

"Lo-fi and warm, the album's picturesque imagery and Newkie Brown-strong Teesside accents are an endearing flipside to the po-faced, similarly Gang Of Four influenced indie kids like Bloc Party and all that, and in 'Once, twice, again!' Dartz! have a song you'll be humming like your limbs depended on it." Plan B

"Dartz! produce indie rock with a throbbing rhythmic heart that is perfect to dance to – as long as your legs can adjust themselves to the frequent giddy time changes. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, the trio most obviously evoke the spirit of Washington DC bands, such as Q And Not U, integral to the punk-funk revolution. And when Dartz! really hit the bull's-eye on tracks such as Prego Triangolos, this is feel-good party rock which flies through the air. 4/5" Metro

"Dartz! are a band for everyone. Single 'Once, Twice, Again' is still an earnestly fresh pop gem, while the thrusting guitar of 'Prego Triangolos' should have dancefloor fulls looking like complete idiots with its winding clapping. We're relieved. After shamelessly banging on about Dartz! for a fair while now, it's a good job that this is ace with added (cow) bells on. 4/5" This Is Fake DIY

"Dartz! encapsulate the smooth marriage of a number of different styles and sounds to such a successful extent that you end up wondering why all bands can't just be so experimental and goddamn tuneful. You see, that's what sets 'This Is My Ship' apart from any number of comparisons sure to be thrown their way with contemporaries both past and present. Unlike Foals for example, who seem to be stuck between a (post-)rock and a (party) hard place, Dartz! seem to be able to put all of their influences' sleeves through the mangle at once and still come up with something fresh, exciting and unique. It goes without saying that if these guys originated from London or New York, 'This Is My Ship' would be heralded as some kind of rule breaking, over-mark stepping classic. Let's hope that logistics don't prove to be a disadvantage, as this record clearly deserves to be heard from city to city and coast to coast, whatever the continent. 8/10" Contact Music

"Have you ever heard, read, or seen something so ingenious that you had to wonder how the creators of that material could be so intelligent? That sense of awe is exactly what I felt listening to Dartz!, as This is My Ship is eclectic mass of genres and styles all connected through a strand of unapologetic exuberance. If dance-punk is the next great sub-genre to be heralded, then all hail the Dartz!" Jersey Beat

"Thoroughly engaging math-dance rock from the U.K. Deep Elm is the U.S. distributor for Dartz! and it's a good thing that's it reached our shores. With the demise of Q and Not U, Dartz! fills in amiably, their jauntiness and calculated rhythms makes their brand of punk engaging. What's most refreshing about Dartz! is they are able to combine the "pop-punk" with the artsy side of it, not slamming either one, but elevating each to a new place. 5/5" Wonka Vision

"I defy anyone to listen to Dartz! and not have a good time. It's literally impossible. You'd have an easier time disproving gravity than explaining how Dartz! aren't one of the best bands going right now. Dartz! have come up trumps with 12 tracks of arousingly brilliant, dart-sharp, bob-along guitar pop. This is their ship, all aboard. 9.1/10" Cow and Field

"Sometimes an album just comes along and flat out knocks you on your ass! This Is My Ship is one of those albums. Dartz! combine so many awesome elements it is hard to even put a finger on what makes them so special. First, and foremost the band writes great songs that are truly infectious. The wild abandon that emanated from Q And Not U's great debut album, No Kill No Beep Beep is replicated here by Dartz! to a high degree. Dartz! is a rare band. Bands like this simply do not come around very often. Dartz! expertly combine all their memorable elements into such a remarkably tight package. Quite frankly, it is jaw-dropping to witness. The fact that This Is My Ship is the band's debut full-length album is just mind-boggling to me. I am absolutely giddy about the future." Sound As Language

"Dartz! have done on this album what I hoped they would. They've taken a template of influences and style which currently works well for many bands right now, and started to twist it with their own ideas and skill into something new. What's very exciting is that they seem to be able to capture that magic combination of radio-friendly recognition and beard-stroker-friendly quirkiness. This is how bands become influential, rather than being purely based on their influences." Diskant

"The angular guitars, frenetic energy, and sometimes abstract lyrics featured in songs such as "A Simple Hypothetical" will undoubtedly draw comparisons to a few of their heroes such as Faraquet and Q and Not U. However, Dartz! also have a more accessible pop side, and tracks like the infectious "Once, Twice, Again!" highlight their ability to cross the lines between angular indie rock and infectious pop melodies at will. "Cold Holidays" finds the band blending relaxed, experimental guitar work that brings to mind Minus The Bear with their fast paced dance-punk tendencies. The energy on this record never falters at any point throughout the albums twelve tracks, giving it a very high replay value and prevents it from ever dragging like some full-lengths can do. Dartz! is easily one of my favorite "new bands" and if their debut is already this good, I can only imagine how good their future albums are going to be. Keep your eyes on these guys, I have a feeling you will be hearing about them quite a bit in the future. 90%" Absolute Punk

"This Is My Ship is a dashing delivery of dance punk, indie rock, and math rock. Emotional choruses that are ridiculously catchy are but an after-thought after the frenetic and angular guitars grab ahold. Vocally it can bounce from Fugazi-tough to electro pop hot. Quirky punk in the vein of Franz Ferdinand's less accessible hits and Futureheads spaciness. Clap along with this joyous debut of righteous indie rock and dance punk abandon." Smother

"I shall keep this short - this is a really fun, and a really good, record. PT forum faves Dartz! are indie-rock goodness on CD and every bit as good live. The band write short, sharp angular pop songs that have the ability to make you sing and dance like a crazed loon. Stop reading this review and go and listen on their myspace and then buy their CD. It'd be a better way to spend your time. 4/5" Punktastic

"DARTZ! deliver a strain of propulsive, highly rhythmic, semi-dance flavored rock, not unlike Q AND NOT U or THE FUTUREHEADS. Never bland, or stagnant, DARTZ! keep the tempo flickering at all time. The band's ability to toy with cyclonish rhythms is borderline intoxicating, and elevates a style of music that I consider often best for background, to something that begs for a closely-guarded headphone experience." PastePunk

"What makes this trio so good is the fact that you don't know what you're getting next, but whatever it is, you can be assured that it is delivered with skill and energy. William and Phillip's vocals spar with the musical  backdrop. It's like watching Bruce Lee for first time. You know it's special. The fact that they combine so many things in their sound makes them a prefect crossover band that will appeal to indie and rock kids. Hell, the fact that they manage to combine this angular sound with energy and pensive lyrics makes it impossible for them not to be 'the next big thing' Those who remotely liked the singles 'Once, Twice , Again!' and 'St Petersburg'  should look smug just about now. 4.5/5" Gigwise

"'This Is My Ship' is packed with tracks British pubs and clubs must have heard so many times before that they sound like old classics. Their debut is a reminder and it's a signpost of things to come. The sound of a band, like Hot Club De Paris and so many other great new British acts with them, borrowing sounds from American acts but inarguably making them their own. It only takes one listen to 'This Is My Ship' to drive home the fact that Dartz! should be outselling Taking Back Sunday ten to one in this country. Dartz! are a national treasure, seek them out and enjoy with pride." New Noise

"Deep Elm tends to find some gems when it comes to the European imports, and the debut full-length from the UK's Dartz!, This Is My Ship is no exception. Dartz! imagines the danceable post-punk of Q and Not U as fronted by that charming English accent and spiced up with a bit of caP'n Jazz's frenetic vigor. This Is My Ship proves to be an overall musical success, drawing carefully from its influences to produce a warm, inviting and cheerful creation. 4.5/5" Punk News

"Tight, excellently crafted indie guitar pop from a band that started as a joke when the drummer and guitarist thought it'd be a good idea to swap instruments. The songs are as spiky and angular as the band's name suggests; pop songs exploding with energy - sure to be floor fillers in the discos of battered converse and shy white kids, satisfying their needs across the country. Dartz join the ranks of guitar pop bands like Maximo Park, and The Maccabees, delighting indie kids left right and centre with their brand of music that you can play loud in your room and learn all the words to." Subba Cultcha

"Perhaps the most captivating aspect of Dartz! is not their excessive exclamation point usage, but their non-musical sources of inspiration. While the crafty unkemptness of the trio may occasionally remind you of the volatile energy of This Aint Vegas, Dartz! insist their motivation lies in the words of Hemingway and Dostoevsky, or the memories of times spent in New York and Prague. Appropriately so, This Is My Ship unfolds like a sachet of treasured recollections in a jagged but keenly exuberant manner. The contagious sense of spur-of-the-moment merriment weaves in and out of their brand of pop, one that you can dance to and think to. It boasts infectious features suggestive of fellow newcomers Foals. This Is My Ship certainly exposes gemlike jiffies worth experiencing. 7/10" Drowned In Sound

"This Is My Ship is everything we could have hoped for from Dartz!. Given its unwavering quality from start to finish, it could very well now just be a case of sitting back and watching just how high Dartz! climb. 4/5" Rock Midgets

"They are a band positively spilling over with energy, intelligence and a relentless knack of writing classic pop songs. 'This Is My Ship' could perhaps be seen as the first sailing of the fair ship Dartz and it doesn't disappoint. As you'd expect the album doesn't last long but nor does it need to cling on too much after such an exciting set of songs. Dartz ascent looks complete on the basis of what is one of the best debut albums you will hear all year. 5/5" Rock City

"At last! After years of waiting we've finally got our grubby little hands on the debut album from Teeside's finest, the one and only Dartz! 'This Is My Ship' will be one of those albums where you can never pick a favourite song and stick to it. Dartz! are quickly showing they can pack a punch in every area, inside the body and out. We explode toward the end with 'Teaching Me To Dance'; a cowbell-led (even more shocking that it's good, then) powerful slice of ego-frenzied rat boy genius. "Dartz! is good for your brain!" The lads scream in unison. And you know what? It really is. 5/5" Rock Louder

"With "This Is My Ship" it could be that Dartz have released the best alternative rock album since Maximo Parks "A Certain Trigger" back in 2005. It looks like Dartz have set the high watermark for alternative rock in 2007, it'll take an exceptional album to top this in the genre that's for sure. 8/10" Hard Rock House

"Dartz! mix agitated math rock with a punk edge and British quirkiness (or is it quirky Britishness?). While there is a certain post-punk/new wave influence on This Is My Ship, this isn't simply the common hipster new wave revival that flies off the shelves. It has all the pop quality of the big sellers, but mixes it with more challenging fare on another level. Depending on which level you choose, this can be easy or difficult, but either way it's rewarding. 8/10" Rock and Roll and Meandering Nonsense

"Songs like "Network! Network! Network!" and "Once Twice, Again!" not only shows the love of Dartz! for excalamtion points, but also some serious skills for pop harmonies. Have you ever had the feeling of listening some music with your eyes closed and find yourself on a beach on a rainy day? That's what I felt when the music of this album started to play. "Prego Triangolos" and "Laser Eyes" have got some killer guitar riffs that you'd die for, and the genre of the whole record is outstanding." True Punk

"This Is My Ship is the sort of relentless high-energy disco punk that combines the fragmented guitar work of Dischord bands with high-speed dance beats and overly-caffeinated vocal expulsions. The songs are smart, tight and compact in their approach, while the musicianship is adroit and aggressive. From start to finish, This Is my Ship never lets up. Tracks like "Network! Network! Network!" and "Once, Twice, Again!" move with the same hip-shaking punk tones as Q and Not U while the jittery guitar work on cuts like "Cold Holidays" and "Laser Eyes" recalls the disjointed funk of Cap'n Jazz and Make Believe."
