I was walking the 10th Avenue Bridge from my house into Dinkytown last night as the 35W bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River. I can't begin to describe it. It was the most surreal and horrible thing I've seen in my life.

But I am okay.

I hope that you and all those you love are all right, too. The bridge was down for seconds, and I was already receiving a busy signal when attempting to call 911. I could hear sirens shortly after. Minutes after that - sheriff's boats and army helicopters. This morning, the portion of the river near my office is dotted with trucks, boats, barges. Everything seems to be moving as quickly and carefully as it can.

My thoughts are with the people who are healing in nearby hospitals and with the people who have yet to be located under the central slab of interstate. My heart is with everyone working diligently through this catastrophe to recover who and what remains.

Thank you to those who have been returning my phone calls, texts and e-mails to let me know that you are all right. Endless thanks to the friends and family who have contacted me to make sure I'm safe. The sounds of your voices and the shapes of your words are my peace of mind.
