Wow.
Lets backtrack a few years.
A company called "Dynamite Comics" has been putting out several "Army of Darkness" comics for several years now. Thier first series won Spike TVs best comic series during thier first man award show. One of the series they put out was "Army of Darkness VS Re-Animator."
I’m a big horror fan. Three or four times a year there’s a horror convention at the Cherry Hill Crown Plaze(used to be the Hilton), the hotel is RIGHT down the street from me so if someone is there I want to see, I go.
A few years ago, Jeffrey Combs from Re-Animator(among others) was there. I bring the comic to be signed. He looks at the book and says, "I’ve heard about this but I’ve never seen a copy. Do you mind if I flip through? You know, I never recieved any money for this?"
I didn’t know that and told him so. He signed that and an 8x10, I paid him and left. Never thinking much about it.
I go to the show today. Bruce Campbell is going to be there. I thought it would be cool to have both guys sign the book.
Bruce and Corey Feldman are the main draws to the show this time. I buy my ticket to the show and immediatly jump in Bruce’s line which is now outside the hotel and around the front. It’s a little after 11am. Bruce starts signing at 12, I finally make it into the same room as him at 2:40pm. So I was in line a little over three and a half hours.
Some lady takes my $30 and I get to pick out a 8x10 and she asks what I was going to have signed(he’s only signing one item per person so everyone gets a chance and there are only 400 tickets to this session he’s making 12000 for this signing not bad for 5 hours). I pulled out "THE BOOK" and she tells me he won’t sign it. She doesn’t know why.
I get to Bruce and ask him. He said he’ll sign any comic execpt the stuff from Dynamite. I ask why and he said the guys at Dynamite are "SCUMBAGS." I told him that I didn’t know that when I bought the book. He said well you do know and be sure to tell everyone. I told him it was already signed by Combs and it would be nice to have it signed by both. He told me it wasn’t happening and signed my 8x10.
If I had known he wasn’t going to sign the book I wouldn’t have waited in a 4 hour line and spent $30. I’ve seen him at two book signings for both of his book books.
You can see in the photo, which he wasn’t posing with anyone but the staff takes with your camera as he signs, that we were both pissed off with each other. I was fuming and he never really looked me in the eyes.
I always like Bruce the best out of all my B movie heroes. He was always cool before. At the book signings he went out of his way to make sure he talked with everyone that came. He had a chair at the first signing and you got to sit and chat with him for a couple of minutes while he signed your stuff. He never should have taken his issues with Dynamite to the fans. He should have let us know, but don’t not sign shit and get mad at us.
Anyway, Jeffrey Combs is now my favorite. He jumped from number two to number one.
I still like you Mr. Campbell, but fuck you.
Here’s my pic, "THE BOOK" is in my hand.
