Hi Guys.

Yesterday marked 13 years since the Oklahoma City bombing, and today is the nine year anniversary of the tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. We want to begin by acknowledging those who lost loved ones, and the many people who continue to live life in these communities. Today we stand with you and say that the lives lost matter, that those stories, and yours, are important, and that community matters. Thank you for the bravery you've displayed in picking up the pieces. We can't imagine what you've been through. We are sorry beyond words. We pray some healing has come as the days have passed. We know nothing can replace what was lost, but we hope and pray that life can be good again. We stand with you in the moments you remember.

As for the news about Hot Topic, we sent out a bulletin late Friday night (or early Saturday morning, depending where you live and/or when you go sleep). We posted it three more times over the weekend, and the response has been pretty incredible - over 1000 comments and a bunch of messages as well...

The news was (and is) this:
"TWLOHA's original black Title shirts are now available in Hot Topic stores across the west coast and midwest (USA). By early next week, TWLOHA shirts will make there way to HT's east coast locations as well. In total, we are more than thrilled to announce that TWLOHA shirts will be available in 650 locations around the country. By early next month, pink Title shirts will be showing up as well.

i will explain why we're thrilled about this news later today. I can tell you now it goes way beyond shirts and money. We love the idea that TWLOHA is being introduced in basically every major mall in the country. We want to be about hope and help, and we love the idea of people discovering those things. We love that the shirt and story that started all of this, are exactly what's going to be showing up in stores.

We're excited to say that this feels like a partnership, like the folks at Hot Topic believe in TWLOHA and want to share it with their audience. By early next week, HotTopic.com will be featuring an exclusive TWLOHA video, an interview we filmed a couple weeks ago, when i had the chance to visit their headquarters near Los Angeles...

Wanted to share this now in case you want to go take a peak at your local Hot Topic. We hope you find something familiar on a rack or on the wall. It would be huge if you wanted to buy a TWLOHA shirt for yourself or a friend, and it would be equally huge if you took a minute to tell the folks in the store a bit about TWLOHA... that you're excited to find it there, that sales from those shirts will be supporting treatment and recovery, or simply that TWLOHA means something to you... You see, we want to get off to a surprising stuff with Hot Topic because the sky's the limit in terms of ways we can work together, ways we can bring our message of hope to people in need of hope... We're already daydreaming about exclusive shirts, in-store events with our favorite artists...

We are interested in change. This feels like big news to us. We are hopeful and excited. We hope you feel the same."

Okay, so that was the bulletin... What followed was a whole bunch of comments and messages from you guys. We're excited that so many of you are excited. We also understand that some of you are concerned. We are not afraid of criticism. If we were pleasing everyone, i would be concerned that we were simply playing it safe. Since we value your opinion and we care what you think, and since we believe this news is good news, we want to dive in a bit deeper. We talk about honest conversations - we've said it's a goal of ours. So in the spirit of honest conversations, i wanted to highlight and respond to some of your comments.

Cool? Cool. Off we go...

Comment:
"i am a Hot Topic employee in Dubuque, Iowa and i really really hope we get your shirts in our store, because i know enough to explain to people all about the movement that goes along with it, if they were to ask :] i've studied the story and keep reading it over and over. Everyone needs a group of people like you guys...and i guarantee i'm speaking for everyone when i say thank you."

jamie responds:
You are welcome. Thanks for being excited. We hope the shirts show up in Dubuque as well! The cool news is that it sounds like you're not alone. Here's part of an email we got Friday afternoon from our friend Ryan, the t-shirt buyer at Hot Topic:
"By the way, the store response has been overwhelming, I've had a huge number of emails from employees that are really excited about this because they feel that it is a cause that they can really get behind. It's really the first time that I've seen this kind of reaction, just wanted to pass that along to you!"

Comment:
"This is dumb. I guarantee that kids will be buying these shirts without having a clue as to what TWLOHA even means, let alone what the mission is. Honestly, I hate Hot Topic and I'm digusted to see that TWLOHA is now going to be sold there. I have deep respect for the movement itself, and I really think you guys have gone over the edge. Hot Topic? Come on, guys, you're SO much better. I had beyond respect for you. You have much more opportunity than Hot-fucking-Topic. Wow..can't say I'm happy to hear this."

Response:
The shirts in HT will be no different from the ones we've sold all along. Each one will have the story printed inside, and each one will come with an info card that mentions who we are, what we do, and how to find out more. Press pause for a second. The shirt, the story, and info in 650 stores around the country - we think that's good news. If that's not enough, it seems you have two options. The first would be to complain, which will not do much to help (and it won't be much fun either). The second option, if you're truly concerned, is to go visit your local Hot Topic and talk to the people who work there. Tell them about TWLOHA, tell them how it started, tell them why the shirts matter... (We like option two a lot.)

Comment:
"i work at a Hot Topic on the east coast, and this morning when i opened the store, i looked in the back and noticed the TWLOHA shirt...i read the tag and cried, because that is my story, like many others too. Not gonna lie, i bought it as soon as i got off. i dont care what others are saying, it's such a good feeling to know that people are getting to know the real struggle, and not just thinking its some stupid "emo" thing. Thanks again for all you're doing."

Response:
Thank you. We agree. This is not an emo thing. This is a people thing. This is a "Life is hard but hope is real" thing. Thanks for caring. Your story is important. We're all in this together.

Comment:
"In a way, it kind of defeats the purpose of TWLOHA. Now, I'm not saying that people shouldn't buy these shirts, they definately should, but for the RIGHT reasons, not just because they are sold in a store where "scene" girls and boys shop. Just an opinion...but I think people should wear TWLOHA for the organization and to help others. So basically, I agree with all the posts that relate to this."

Response:
The purpose of TWLOHA is to communicate a message of hope and help to people who struggle with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. Note the word "people". These are issues that affect people. These issues matter because people matter. As far as we know, people shop at Hot Topic. So we think the fact that people might come across our shirts - shirts that we agree, can and should and do mean something - we think that's pretty great. That this could happen in a store not generally known as a place where people find hope, we think that's even better. (We think hope belongs especially in those sorts of places)

Comment:
"Hey, if you're worried about people buying them and not understanding, try to help: No matter who you see wearing a TWLOHA shirt, go talk to them! If they support the cause, you'll have a great conversation. If not, then they'll now understand what it really means! i think this is a great oppurtunity to spread the word :]

Response:
We agree. You rule. Thanks.

Comment:
It would be cool if there was the story or some sort of words of general interest on a tag on the shirt, like they do with vegan clothing and the like. Then people could find a little info, and then visit the website/myspace/etc.

Response:
Good call. Like i said, every shirt will come with the story printed inside and an info card attached. Those are pretty hard to miss. (Everyone eventually does laundry.)

Comment:
Heres an idea: If everyone thinks that the shirts will lose their meaning, if you know someone who doesn't know what TWLOHA is about, tell them. Make them aware, don't hate them for their ignorance. Everyone deserves to know.

Response:
"Everyone deserves to know." We agree. We think hope and help are for all people. The phrase "Rescue is possible" - we believe that for all people. TWLOHA is not some exclusive club. These are not secrets we're trying to keep. We're trying to spread a message of hope to a world in need of hope, to people in need of hope. i think we miss the point in an enormous way the second we start trying to keep these ideas quiet. We believe this message has the power to see lives change. We hear from people who've chosen life rather than death, freedom rather than addiction. What we're talking about is something like a cure. If you come across a cure, please don't keep it a secret. Please share it with the world.

Comment:
"At first, it seems it's at once needed and undesirable. But, reflecting on this brought a quote by C.S. Lewis to mind... The purpose of TWLOHA is to spread the idea of love and hope to everyone, not just a select few.... What better outlet than HT, since so many supportive bands sell merch through HT? The hard thing about LOVE is that it must be shared; otherwise, it isn't love. But in sharing it, you open yourself up to that same love being misused, misunderstood, ignored, or even rejected." Surely, all of these things might happen to the message of TWLOHA with some people who buy the shirts. But, a) that's not TWLOHA's fault, and b) you can't change that, because it's bound to happen eventually if this movement is to penetrate further into the public eye. But, though this is certainly a risky thing to do, riskier still is to hold onto this love and keep it for ourselves...

Response:
This comment rules. Can we hire you? : )

In closing/moving on, maybe this news is the best news you've ever heard, or maybe it's the worst... We hope you'll trust us when we tell you this is a decision we gave a lot of thought to, and it's one we believe in. We can look our purpose and our goals and all of you in the eye, and say "Yes, we think this is good news." Also, it's worth noting that every shirt sold in Hot Topic translates to money going directly to treatment and recovery. Beyond that, please remember that this is just one small stop on the journey. Let's not lose sight of the bigger picture. The goal is that people would know it's okay to be honest, that people would begin to believe that they are not alone, that people would know that hope is real, that help is real, that rescue is possible.

Peace to you tonight.
: )
jamie

PS: There was one comment along the lines of "Way to sell out, Jamie. Pathetic." To that one i'd like to respond... My friend, you're missing the point. It's what i said about the cure. These are secrets not to keep. We've been given one life. The aim is to give it away, that others might live. The alternative is predictable: We recycle all of the bad "we vs. they" and "us vs. them" ideas that have been popular for way too long... In the face of that, i'd like to propose this possibility: we are one. To Write Love on Her Arms is a movement for broken people, and it is led by broken people.

Most people live life on the sidelines. They yell things from time to time. It's much safer out there. As far as we know, there are no critics in any Hall of Fame. Only people who were brave enough to play. This is an invitation to take the field.

Wow, some people are kind of stupid. Really like, hardcore. First of all, not only "scene" kids shop at Hot Topic, not that I'm necessarily sure what they exactly mean by scene. I go in there for the headbands and Harry Potter shirts, haha.

I think this is great. I've never ordered a TWLOHA's shirt because I don't like ordering clothes offline because if they don't fit then it's a waste, but now I can go get one! And if the shirt comes with an info card and the story printed on the inside then people are going to figure out what it means if the didn't already.

And if you're reading this and you're one of those people who is "scared" of Hot Topic, like my cousin, because of it's lighting, merchandise, logo, etc. then you need to get over yourself. In all seriousness. It's a store, not a dungeon. If you get too scared then yell and a mall cop shall come to your rescue.

Well, I had a lot of fun with this comment, haha. I hope you enjoy it just as much.

I hate scene kids. They're not worthy of TWLOHA. They're the kind of people who go and buy a TWLOHA shirt because other people wear it, without ever looking at the story.

I hate Hot Topic because it's turned into such a festering infestation of scene shit. What ever happened to the music? Because of the fuckin' scene, a store that used to be for the alternative people is now destroyed. If you want your hello fuckin' kitty, go to claires or those kid stores, not a place where they have metal blasting and shirts for a bunch of old punk bands.

At least SOMETHING good - these TWLOHA shirts - will be giving me reason to go into one of those stores now. My mom refused to give me the money to get a shirt online - maybe she'll change her mind if I ask for some money to get a shirt at the mall. :)

Haley, if you are going to sit there and say that you hate certain kinds of kids and say they aren't worthy of something, then you have a mindset that is the complete opposite of everything TWLOHA stands for. Stop judging people that are different from you, swallow your pride. TWLOHA is here for anyone and everyone that needs hope, love, some sort of direction in their lives. And if your ego is too big to accept someone who may be in need because they may be a "scene kid," then you are the one who isn't worthy, if anyone. Get over yourself.

Everybody hurts, everybody has pain, and it doesn't matter whether your scene, emo, goth, prep, punk, rocker, or jock. Pain doesn't discriminate. If you are conscious, you can hurt.

This opportunity that TWLOHA is HOPE. It is what TWLOHA is all about.

I come from a pretty dinky town, the only place to go on weekends is the mall, and it sucks. Plain and simple, my town doesn't want to grow, even though it is a college town, it's in a rut. Pack mentality here says, 'people that shop at hot topic are loser rejects and posers who cut themselves for attention.' And so, all the kids here think that to dress that way, and wear those black baggy pants with chains, and black band tee's, you have to be depressed AND cut. I mean, come on, only losers and depressed, suicidal rejects shop at HT(hear: sarcasm).
There was a teen guy I went to church with. He started shopping at HT, and begin getting depressed. My husband is labeled a goth, he wears black, dies his hair black, and sometimes wears black eyeliner. Needless to say, he doesn't fit in well, in our little hick town. He started talking to the guy, and found out that the guy thought that my husband was depressed and suicidal, he said all his friends that wore those clothes cut, and that was just how it was.

All that said: People don't always realize that just because you shop in a store, doesn't mean you have to 'fit the label'!

The people at my local HT NEED TWLOHA. They need it. Everyone deserves hope, and it gives me hope, that the people that shop at my HT don't have to cut just because they shop there. They don't have to fit the label. That's what these shirts mean to me. It's a big step.

That's a little harsh saying they're not worthy of TWLOHA. That's like saying they're not worthy of hope. Everyone's worthy of hope.
I think that it's awesome that TWLOHA will be available somewhere that everyone can get at them. This means that more people who hadn't heard of TWLOHA will find out about it. The more people who know, the more people who are affected/changed/saved.
It's a great step in reaching out and making TWLOHA available to everyone. TWLOHA was meant for everyone, not just people who you approve of.
Everyone needs hope.

Best of luck, Jamie.

BTW, scene kids are alternative people...

First of all, I think its cool that TWLOHA is getting sold in a mainstream store. Its true, this is exactly the purpose of the organization, to get the word out there. But I do think that is sort of amusing and --- that Hot Topic happens to be the chosen retailer. There has been a lot of talk about 'scene kids' and I have to admit, I use that word to describe people often. Hot Topic has become so superficial and meaningless. It is not a store for alternative culture, it is a store for suburban middle-schoolers to shop at with their allowance to look more like their favorite cookie-cutter bands that they heard about on FUSE or PureVolume or MySpace or whatever. It is not in any way, shape, or form a place for non-conformists, quite the opposite. It is all about conformity. There is no originality. Just because you're trading in an American Eagle hoodie or Hollister jeans for a stupid/ironic cartoon black t-shirt and a pair of tight black pants doesn't mean that you aren't conforming, you are just conforming to something different. People buy the Hot Topic merchandise because they want to be what they see as cool. I am not trying to bash or hate anyone, just think people should see Hot Topic for what it is: a mainstream store, selling to kids who are conforming to a certain image.

Now, back to TWLOHA. I find it funny, and a testament to what the organization has become, that TWLOHA merch is being sold in Hot Topic of all places. It is obvious that TWLOHA has become a part of this scene, that kids are wearing these shirts because of the bands that support and wear them. OK, they may support and believe in the cause, but do they really? Or do many of these kids just thinks its cool to support TWLOHA because of the meaning a TWLOHA shirt carries now? I think that the addition of TWLOHA shirts to the Hot Topic line-up is a testament to the latter. Hot Topic is a corporation just like any other. Their main goal is to make money. They do this by capitalizing on what kids will buy. They see what TWLOHA is becoming and are jumping on the bandwagon. I would hope that Hot Topic truly believes in the cause, but I am almost certain that they are just trying to bring more 'scene' kids into their store so they can sell them what the scene considers cool.

But power to TWLOHA for getting their message out there. I would just like to see the merch pop up in a couple other less obvious and stereotypical places. How about GAP, next to the Product Red line-up? Or Macy's, or JCPenny, or anything else? This would help to break down the stigma TWLOHA is getting, show that this organization ISN'T trying to be a part of 'the scene' and really just wants to get their message out there. Unfortunately, this probably won't happen because the only reason Hot Topic is selling the merch is because of the underlying meaning it has in the scene and Hot Topic is currently one of the few stores capitalizing on these kids. I wouldn't be surprised if Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Journeys, or Zumiez, or even PacSun started carrying TWLOHA next. But what would really make me happy would be to see a TWLOHA shirt in Wal-Mart.

Mark, although I see your point, I think you should stop cutting down the people who shop there.  I agree that a lot of the fashion there isn't my thing. Nor do I like 90% of the bands they endorse. I think most of the music is horrible. But for you to talk shit about someone who doesn't have that same opinion makes you just as guilty as the people you think shop there. Some people like ironic/cartoon shirts. Some people like Fall Out Boy. I wish they were turned on to music that was deeper, more emotional and passionate, with a better message, yes. You are allowed to dislike anything you so choose, but disrespecting those who do enjoy those things is judgmental.

Wow great comment. I think you said what was appropriate and succeeded to get your message across, which is more than I can say about other comments.

And even if somebody buys the shirt because their friends are wearing them does that still not promote the cause, is there not that chance that they will happen to read the story? And that one person could be changed. And that's a great thing.

Oh, and to the people afraid of Hot Topic....grow up. please. It's just a store, with real people, people who need this message aswell.

Okay, well I really appreciate this movement, and I appreciate you comment.

TJ, although I appreciate your positivity, Hot Topic isn't just a store. They are a black-hearted corporation that overcharges for nearly every product and pays the artists a ridiculously small percentage of what they make. However, I don't blame TWLOHA for getting in with them. The more people that see what they have to offer, the better!

The fact of the matter is, is hot topic is a store for alternative people, living alternative lifestyles. What you're doing, is bashing one alternative lifestyle, and saying that it's ruining a store, that was opened for the purpose of serving alternative people.

It's kind of ridiculous that people are bashing scene kids, because of how they are.... Sadly enough, with every new alternative lifestyle, there's a new wave of hate. Now it's the scene kids, before that it was the emo kids, before that it was the metal kids, before that it was the punk kids, before that it was the heavy metal kids, and before that it was the rocker kids in general.

How is it so hard to figure that it's easier to be accepting, than it is to hate?

And not every scene kid who gets a TWLOHA shirt, doesn't know the story. There's no doubt that there are people that are wearing the shirts just because everyone else is, but that doesn't change the fact that some people actually have an interest in the story.

Besides, the more people who where the t-shirts, the more interest comes from it. And for every shirt that was bough because everyone else has one, I garauntee another 10 people just looked up TWLOHA, and actually learned about it.

Who are you to judge whether or not another person that you don't even know is worthy of something? Even if someone buys the shirt just because they think it's pretty and don't care about the story, maybe someone who's hurting will see that person wearing that shirt and then think to reach out for help. It's not about who wears them, or for whatever reason they wear them. It's about awareness and spreading the word that you're not alone and other people out there are experiencing the same feelings you are. It's about spreading the message of hope. =/

It makes me sad to hear someone talk like this...seems to defete the whole purpose of TWLOHA. How can you say someone is not worthy of love, and hope, and life without pain and misery? Depression and cutting effect people from all walks of life: politicians, businessmen, housewifes, career women, jocks, geniuses, musicians, emo kids, and even scene kids. No one is forcing you to be their best friends, but don't they deserve to get help just as much as the next person. God forbid they actually get help and no longer feel the need to try so hard to gain acceptance...if you take a minute to look beyond the mask, what you will usually find is hurt and dejection.

As for Hot Topic...since when do we expect retailers to have morals? They are in business to make money and they will sell whatever it is that people are willing to buy. Just be thankful that at least now one thing they sell will be making a difference.

It is great that people feel so strongly about TWLOHA and that it has touched so many lives, but remember: while it is here for you, it was never meant to be JUST for you...it was and is meant to be shared. Let's not begrudge them for taking one step closer towards fulfilling their mission.

I believe everyone who needs TWLOHA should have it wether they are "scene" or "goth" or "prep" (i hate lables btw) self-injury, addiction, suicide, none of that sees lables or color or sex or religon it sees a victum. a person it can grab onto a suck the life out of. i believe this is not only good to get the meeage out but also for the life of TWLOHA. most of their income comes for the t's and they donate 25% of the money they get to other oganizations. the online store is great but like you said you wheren't alowd to buy of line. this give the people who can go on line and buy a chance to own a shirt and share the story. wether its hot topic, target, JCpenny or Walmart try to suport what TWLOHA is doing they are only thinking of the cause and want nothing more then to give hope to the hopeless

Sorry for the long rant but thanks for hearing me out

Yours truely
Heather

why can't we start a TWLOHA 'scene'? if people buy shirts because "everyone's doing it," you can bet more than one of those "everyone's" is going to read the message, feel the message and maybe be brought to a place of healing. i think even just ONE "everyone" makes this venture with HT a positive thing. and see, you already found a positive! :)

Life With A Purpose

We support TWLOHA all the way but we are focusing on Teens and An Extreme movement. Check us out.

Life With a Purpose is about teens who are going through depression and drug abuse, suicide and gang activities and showing them that they have a purpose in life. To show that were not alone but that were meant to come together to help each other through the pain and show that there is hope.

Life With a Purpose is a work in progress; A book with out an ending. It a story of Brady, but it is also a story of you and me. It is an attempt at showing at showing the world that there is still hope. It's an attempt at showing the world that we all have a purpose but more than anything we can come together as a world wide community and create hope.

Life with a Purpose represents hope and a future, most importantly it is a movement. We are the Generation that is going to change the world.

I think that the fact you're going into a mainstream store is fantastic. =) It gets the message out more, and, honestly- if someone doesn't want the message to go out to more people, no matter the store- then they're completely missing the whole purpose of TWLOHA.

This is awesome, and I can't wait to hit up my Hot Topic to get another shirt. It's amazing to see how big this movement is getting. =)

i am amzingly happy.
i know so many kids who think TWLOHA shirts are so rad, but dont understand where to get them, or the story behind them. by the shirts going to hot topic, now the kids who just thought they looked cool will now buy them, and read the card, and understand the story behind it.
it also makes it eaiser, in my opnion, to get the shirts- no more having to pay shipping! i am totaly stoked, and makes my planned visit to HT on tuesday a million times better! :D

ps- your not a sell out, you are a hero. dont forget that.

I saw the bulliten about the shirts being at HT right before i left for church today, and right after i went to HT and got one (its like my 6th shirt). i talked ot the clerk and he said that yesterday he had realized that story story was on the inside and really liked it, he had never heard of you guys before. We talked for a few minutes about what you guys did and he said he was going to read more about it once he got off. :-)

While I hate most of HT, I'll probably buy your shirts online still.
I'm glad that you're getting the message out because that's what were basically here for; honest conversations.
But I just don't want this to be the latest 'fad' that people start to follow because other people have.

i really dont see this as selling out, or anything bad.
depression is such a huge issuse for people all around the world!
and every one need to know there is hope.
TWLOHA is such an amazing thing, IT GIVES HOPE.
it gave me hope, and i know it will give others hope too.
HOPE IS THE KEY - RESCUE IS POSSIBLE,
with these shirts, some kid might walk into a HT store, and pick up a shirt, and read the story,
and that could change/save there lives,
it could make them go, wow someone does care.

thanks for everything TWLOHA and jamie.

xxxxxxxxxx

what i have tsay to those who think TWLOHA is selling out:
this movement is not your favorite band that is now all of a sudden all over MTV and the radio, it is not your idol now selling mountain dew in a commercial during the super bowl

i think this is one of the best things that could happen, not only will the message reach alot more people, now i don't have to wait for my shirt in the mail
look at it that way people, make this something negative and you're losing out on something make it positive and you can continue helping this message spread

oh and one more thing
i love that they said way to sell out jamie, because he's obviously the only one in TWLOHA that has an opinon or say in the matter. they speak as if jamie has some ironclad fist of judgment he brings down in these situations
