Hello from a road called 81 in Virginia.

Virginia is looking good today - doing it's best impression of England. We had a great night last night in Asheville. Such a cool town and it's always good to be back in North Carolina. i was born in NC so it has a funny way of making me think, about my family and my story and "home". The older i get and the more i travel, the more "home" remains the great mystery. Where is home for you?

Two weeks ago, we posted a blog announcing that TWLOHA shirts would be available in 650 Hot Topic stores around the country. We saw a pretty incredible response as the news was met with a ton of excitement and it was also a chance for us to wrestle with and respond to criticism. An honest conversation, you might say...

The story has taken some surprising turns so it's definitely time for an update. First off, thank you. Thanks for your emails and messages. Thanks for caring. In large thanks to you, our Title shirt was Hot Topic's best-selling shirt two weeks ago. But then, last Monday, because of the language in the story (printed inside), they decided to stop selling the shirts. We were told this was not an emotional decision. It was simply their policy. (No profanity. No religion.)

As you can probably guess, it was quite a roller coaster, to be told that we were their best seller, and then a few hours later, to learn that the shirts were being removed from their stores... It was a strange day, to say the least. We wrestled with it and i spent several hours on the phone, reaching out to friends for advice on how we should respond and how we might be able to move forward.

The next morning, i got a call from Hot Topic's CEO. Her name is Betsy. Betsy apologized for the drama and said a lot of nice things and made it very clear that they believe in what we're doing and they want our shirts back in the stores as soon as possible. She asked if they could buy the shirts without the story printed inside, and i asked her if she would let me write something entirely new. She said yes. And then Betsy said another surprising thing: basically that she felt they should be paying more for the shirts, so that TWLOHA could see more support from the deal - i almost dropped the phone.

So there's a couple cool things happening...
1 The shirts pulled from their stores, Hot Topic is giving those to their employees.

2 This brings us to today... i am in the middle of writing something new for the inside of the next batch of the Hot Topic shirts. i will explain and defend this soon, but i have to get back to the writing for now. i was supposed to have it done yesterday... (i am the slowest writer in the world).

The cool news, in my opinion, is that basically every single Hot Topic employee (10,000) is now aware of TWLOHA. Also, we now have a relationship with the people who run Hot Topic. We often say that we want to lead TWLOHA in a way that is brave and creative. We say we want to continue to take this conversation to surprising places. With those ideas in mind, i'd say this is a pretty exciting moment. And again, heart of the matter, we found a way to make it work so that the people who shop in their stores will again be introduced to hope and help through TWLOHA. Rather than pick a fight over their decision, we were able to come to an agreement that works for everyone. In many ways, we're in a better position now than we were. (And if that's not enough for you, we get to say that our shirts were too controversial for Hot Topic. We were their best seller and we got kicked out, all in the same day! How rock and roll is that?)

Now, if you'll excuse me, i have some writing to get back to. i owe Betsy an email.
Trying to say something that will matter and move. Trying to say hope. Then we're gonna print a whole bunch of shirts and send them back out to all the towns. We're told the towns are filled with people, and that's really what this whole thing's about...
: )

Peace from these green mountains. We are moving north.
Keep it spicy.
jamie

PS: We have a new shirt. It's called "Alive". Some new V-Necks and stickers too. Check 'em here.

i actually love how hot topic sells necklaces with fake razorblades on them? seriously...

i actually find that really ironic that a store that sells things like those razorblade necklaces (proof- search "razor" on the hot topic website. you get eighteen results.) is now selling the TWLOHA shirts. when i first found out that the shirts were going to be sold there, i reacted the way i've seen many other people react - "okay, this is the end of this organization meaning ANYTHING to the general public. it will become trendy, and lose substance."

but i really thought about it, and my opinion completely changed in about two minutes. hot topic has such a huge presence in malls across the country. instead of seeing TWLOHA occasionally on tee shirts at shows, it'll now be seen in 650 malls. and if it does become "trendy," that just means more of the shirts will be purchased. which means more money towards a totally worthy cause.

those of us who bought TWLOHA shirts before they hit hot topic are no better than the people who get them there. everyone deserves to know about this organization, and i don't know any better way to do that than place the shirts in a store like that.

and hey, maybe it'll work the magic it's worked on so many of us in there. maybe people won't want those little fake razorblades anymore. maybe they'll choose an image of love.

Im a hot topic employee as well so i have to defend what is the nicest and fariest business i've ever worked for...

they classify those awful razors and crosses as fashion statements, because that's what they are these days. kids wearing them dont really think about the meaning, they just wanna be cool.

and one of the main concerns they had was regarding where the money was sent. they wanted to help twloha, not private churches or anything like that.

and it is a family store and makes most of its money from younger kids, as well as their parents. so while i personaly dont see a problem with "fuck up" on the inside i dont think many mothers would be pleased to know, and then they'll just get the wrong idea about hot topic and twloha

oh no,spencer's is the last last last place to sell the shirts.plus they are lazy to get around to doing things.i worked for spencer's at one point as a assistant manager,no way.there are no morals at all in the place, and if something is a "hot" item, they mark up the price astronomically because the only concern they have is how much money they can make off of it,and it will take forever and then some for them to even approve to carry it,and then take another eternity to get it into stores.no,spencer's should not even cross your mind.you should keep it exclusive with hot topic for awhile because their c.e.o.'s and on down the line actually seem to care about the cause, and they would be willing to promote it in ways the would not degrade the cause.

Christian bookstores would be a terrible place to sell the shirts because it would turn people off to the story if they saw the them in a Christian Store.

twloha states quite clearly that they are not a Christian organization
yeah alot of the things they promote [hope, love, etc.] are Christian ideals but its not just Christians who need those things.
and there is nothing un-moral about hot topic,
they're pretty much the best store i've ever seen as far as having merch to fit everyones personality.
just because the lighting is low and they play "that screaming music" does not mean they have bad morals.
OPEN YOUR MIND, you sound like my mother.

and it definitely sucks that the shirts were recalled, i mean it's part of the story, but i definitely respect hottopics commitment to keeping the store appropriate for all ages.
the new shirts are gonna be just as great though!

ok, twloha may not be a Christian organization, but Jamie did give a speech five nights in a row to over 20,000 people at the world's iggest Christian music festival, and what did he talk about? Twloha and G-d. That is actually where I found out about twloha and faceless international was at a press conference at Cornerstone about a year ago. And this is not meant to be about the status of twloha as a Christian thing or not, it's about the shirts. And if I could buy the shirt with the original message at Cornerstone, but not at a Hot Topic store, I find that to be incredibly ironic...

First of all Christian bookstores suck to go in. They have no appeal for people in their teens or young adults.

Second of all the people that this organization wants to reach are going into hot topic not a Christian bookstore. This is the most advanced and best effort I have ever seen by a "Christian" outreach group to meet people where they are at.

P.S. just cuz the cd has a parental advisory doesn't mean they support drug use or any other kind of adictive behavior. As a matter of fact the straight edge (no drinking, no drugs) movement was started in part by a punk band called Minor Threat in the early 1980's and they have songs blatantly condemning drug and alcohol use, but had their music come out today they would be under a parental advisory.
The funny thing is I don't even care for hot topic and never thought I would find myself defending them. Oh well kudos to them and TWLOHA for having the balls and the brains to embark on such a historic journey.

First of all I am a bit offended that you come across so harshly about Christian bookstores. I realize they may not be something you would like but I also think that there are quite a number of people who go in there and would love to get a shirt from there.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing them stocked in both stores. I don't see the harm in the word fuck up. Also plently of churches would stock the shirts that don't have the story inside if they had a problem with it. I think that the people who TWLOHA are trying to reach are any type of person. This cause is to help depression, suicide, self harm and anything like that. Those things affect everyone, not just the people that shop at hot topic. Personally I haven't gone into a hot topic since I was 12 but they are certainly trying to reach me. They are trying to reach everyone. So just because they are in one store doesn't mean they couldn't be in another. I where my shirts everywhere I go. If I am going into a spencers with my shirt does it not give the same message.

The more stores they are in the better. While I wouldn't like to see them in spencers I think most stores they would have a good impact in and be easier for everyone to get one. The more people that are able to get them the better because it just spreads the word even more about TWLOHA. Regardless of where I am I always have time to stop and explain to a person what TWLOHA is about. I do it at work and I do it on the street. And I think regardless of where they are sold as long as the story and the message are out there it is a good thing

Oh another side note. You even talk about putting one of these shirts in a christian bookstore and because they say "fuck up" in the story every church in the area will boycott the store.

It would be hypocritical for Spencer's to market TWLOHA merch. Hot Topic in no way glorifies the use of any sort of vice, so it makes sense for us to carry their stuff.

This is an amazing cause and that is wonderful that you are getting backing from Hot Topic as well. I disagree with the "controversy" of the story, seeing the other things that are in the store. However, that is great that all the staff will have a shirt and know about the cause. Reaching out and informing people is what this is all about.
When the shirts return I will definitely be getting one. I can't wait to see what you have to say in the insert.
You, TWLOHA and everyone involved in this is amazing.
Keep spreading hope and love.
