Category: MySpace

Hey Folks -

We've been working on a new, simplified navigation bar for MySpace. The new nav only has seven main links: Home, Mail, Profile, Friends, Music, MySpaceTV, and More. It also has two sub-links to the far right: My Account and SignOut. Take a look at it here:

The Profile and Friends links give you easy access to your own profile and your list of friends. In "More" you'll find most of the things that used to be in the Nav (Forums, Groups, Classifieds, for example). All the features moved into "More" were not clicked on too often, so they've been de-emphasized in the menu.

Some of the menu items (mail, profile, friends and more) have drop down menus (indicated by the arrows).   The drop downs contain new links that weren't in the menu before - such as "Compose a Message" or "Who's Online" under Friends. We moved "My Account" to the nav because there are very important commands there that people tend to not know about, such as spam protections and notification settings.

Probably the biggest change is putting the status & mood into the header. This allows you to update your status & mood at any point while on the site. I'm considering making this one optional - i.e. you could set in your account settings whether you want to have your status updates available in the nav. Note the status updates would NOT show up in the nav when you are viewing other people's profile pages, or when you're on your homepage, since you can already change the status & mood from your home. The search bar remains so that you can search for friends and content on MySpace from any page.

Here is a screenshot of the new nav with the ad on top, and with a page on the site below it:

One last word, here's the commands that are in the submenus:

Mail: Compose, Sent Mail, Saved Mail, Address Book
Profile: Edit Profile, My Comments, My Photos, My Videos, My Blogs, My Schools, My Favorites
Friends: Online Friends, Friend Requests, Friend Updates, Mood/Status, Favorites, Browse Friends, Find Friends (Search), Invite Friends
More: Forums, Groups, Classifieds, Events, Top Blogs, IM, Mobile, Comedy, Film, Games

Let me know what you think. I'm eager to hear your feedback.

Very nice, I like the submenus containing less-used items. Are they going to be click-down or hover drop-down?

I like it but, I think it would make more sense to put Friend Requests in the Friends sub-menu vs. putting it with Mail. I really like the simplification though! :)

Hi, Tom

It seems that it will be much more functional when we get used to it. The compose mail feature is disabled for user with over 2000 friends, so I've never had a chance to review it.

Disabling the search feature for users with over 5000 friends was a major disappointment. Any plans to re-enable it? It's disheartening to watch features disappear as our friends list grows.

Be well, my friend and thanks for the new innovations
jo

hi Jo - We are working on improving this. It's quite difficult to make these features work for users with extremely large friend lists. We're working on improving the efficiency of these features so they'll work for people like yourself!

I think it'll be really popular, but I hope the original main page option will still be available, that this new look would be considered a skin or something? I fear change.

Great structure Tom. Just a few tips. I would design the "Mail" tab to turn red when there is a new message. Also I'm a photographer and love to show off my work. But on Myspace all my picture get compressed to a <myspace>size</myspace> of 4x6 inches. Can you change it PLEASE so it will display the actual <myspace>size</myspace>. I reduce the <myspace>size</myspace> of my pics to 7MB so I can upload them. But its never the actual <myspace>size</myspace> =(

(Please reply if read)

Thanks Tom

Myspace his revolutionized the internet.

We actually used to have this feature way back in the day (the mail item flashed on the nav when you had new mail). We will bring it back one day! We are also considering storing the original photo size upon upload. More to come.. :-)

Hopefully it will be a combo of both...the dropdown, and then an OTHER on the dropdown, where you can add your own mood? I agree with others, I do like the list of moods you currently have out there, but at times would just like to add my own! Keep up the great work! LOVE this place!

As always it amazes me of what work and advancements you accomplish and offer. I am not a tekky so this will atke time to advance to. But given the ease of My/Space so far it's by far the best I have ever experienced.

Thanx so very much for all you do.

Why not enable us to see if we have a new message in the "Mail" drop-down, so we don't have to go all the way back to our home page to check our inbox?

You know, something to alert you while you're browsing?

Everything else looks great!

Hey Tom!
I really like the new design but I have to agree with the earlier comment from a user:

How about adding a groups key so that we can link to that quicker. Seems that a lot of us do use the groups a lot. I do like the simpler design tho!

Keep up the great work! I know you have put in a lot of time and effort into making MySpace what it is today; a great place to be!

Hugs,
Dana
