Wolverine Set for May 1, 2009

Source: Variety
October 18, 2007

20th Century Fox has set a May 1, 2009 release date for Hugh Jackman starrer X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which director Gavin Hood (Rendition, Tsotsi) begins shooting later this year. David Benioff wrote the script.

"Wolverine" is expected to feature many other mutants -- some new to the film franchise and some from one or more of the three "
X-Men" films. Liev Schreiber is reportedly in final talks to take on the role of a younger version of nemesis William Stryker, played by Brian Cox in X2.

As of now, the only other film staking out the May 1, 2009, date is Disney's animated film G-Force.

The film explores the claw-wielding character Wolverine's violent and romantic past, and his complex relationship with Victor Creed and the ominous Weapon X program, as well as his encounters with other mutants.

Hood will start shooting in Australia before moving to New Zealand and, later, to New Orleans. The latter location is a clue that the storyline might include New Orleans-based character Gambit, who is able to make objects explode and was a professional thief before joining the X-Men.

Producing are Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, producers of the "X-Men" movies, along with Jackman and producing partner John Palermo through their Seed Productions. Marvel's Kevin Feige will executive produce.

It's a Hugh-dunnit - Jackman brings Hollywood to town

A HOLLYWOOD movie starring heart-throb Australian actor Hugh Jackman will be shot around Queenstown and Central Otago over December and January.

Titled Wolverine, the 20th Century Fox film is a prequel to three X-Men blockbusters in which Jackson also played the comic-book superhero of the same name.

According to industry sources, who asked not to be named, a production office has already been set up in town to employ several locals and out-of-towners.

The four- to six-week shoot could see 100 or more Queenstowners hired as set builders, grips, runners, drivers, caterers and the like.

More than one set will be built in the Wakatipu but shooting will also take place in Central Otago, including Naseby.

A source says Queenstown was chosen not only for the scenery but because of the sizeable film community here – who mostly work on TV commercials – as well as the ready availability of accommodation, bars and restaurants.

Interior shooting will take place afterwards at Fox Studios in Sydney. The Sydney-born and raised Jackman, who turned 39 last Friday, first starred in ABC TV prison drama Correlli 12 years ago.

According to website information, he was a last-minute addition to the original X-Men movie in 2000, then starred in the 2003 and 2006 sequels with Hollywood beauty Halle Berry.

Jackman has hosted American theatre's Tony Awards, sung the Aussie national anthem before a Bledisloe Cup rugby Test in Melbourne and an NRL league Grand Final in Sydney – and has been voted among "The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World" by People magazine.

Some women might be disappointed to learn he's married – he met his wife, actress Deborra-Lee Furness, while shooting Correlli. The couple, who live in Melbourne, have two adopted children.

Wolverine is said to be the first project for a production company owned by Jackman, his wife and long-time assistant John Palermo.

Interestingly, the Wolverine character he plays is only 1.6m tall while he's 1.89m. A human mutant, Wolverine first emerged as a fictional Marvel Comics superhero in 1974.

Schreiber could be a good Stryker. But it's a pity that the release date is the 1st May '09. I hoped that the premiere will be in Holiday season '08...

Wow this sounds great. I loved Hugh in the last X-Men film. He was very charismatic and kept things interesting with a catchy one-liner around every corner (my favorite!!). This added a real kick to the tone of the film and for me was the best part. I actually got to the point where I was anticipating the one-liners every time the action ramped up saying "OK, here it comes." It will be so cool if the Wolverine film does the same. Nice blog. Thanks very much. Deb
